Finally someone that thoroughly explained this! Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for making this so easy to understand, Devin! You're about the fifth video I've watched trying to learn about how to propagate my corn plant, and you explained it in a perfect, understandable way!
Happy to help! Maybe I have other videos that may aid you on your journey with plantlife :)
Plants are incredible. Grow this fabulous head of foliage from just a stick! Thank you for the very informative video!
Thanks for watching!!
You explained it so well, loved this
Im glad it was easy to follow!
Fascinating! Informative video and well explained. Thanks for sharing🙏🏽
Thank you for watching!!
Wow! I would have never known! Thanks for the information.

Such gorgeous plants
thanks for the linformation
thanks for watching :)
Beautiful plant. Thank you for sharing. Take care and God Bless
thanks for watching adam!
Fantastically beautiful homeplants. Draceana is one of my favorite plants. I have a lot of sorts at home: dorada, lemon lime, cinto, massangeana and white stripe. Very good, obedient, unpretention beauty.
You are right! Their beauty is under rated!
Thanks, Devin!
Happy to help
This is an addendum to my comment 2days ago, thank you for answering my question…I failed to mention I had called Roberta’s and spoke with a rep. I had started the plant ,Totem Pole in the water and after 4pm the I planted into soil. Within 1mon. One large sprout of leaves became limp. The c.s told me to set it back into the water….all is good now but rootless. Today I see a few white, not bugs rice length…maybe the roots are finally pushing through 1 third the way up the log… I will be repotting the plant as per your answer 2days ago. Thanx again Debra😄
Please let me know how it goes!
I will I wish I could send a pix…I know it will work out, thank you, have the best plants! @@plantvibrations
Love it, good work. Thank you so much.
🙌🙌
@@plantvibrations can we re-grow the plant from the dead, mushy roots, it’s dead I can tell. But, will it help if I soak it in the water to get the new roots? Any suggestions?
Hi devin. Your plans are so beautiful. Great video. I've started my plant about a month ago I have shutes and I think I'm getting ready to get roots. So glad I found this video the directions were in the paper you sent that I got with the plant. Love your plants how do you get the leaves so shiny
Sounds great!
Excellent explanation and very informative 👏 new friend here.
Thanks for watching!
Hello again, so far my totem pole plant is living, the pot is just right, 6”and I mixed the cactus palm and citrus potting mix with some more perlite for drainage, funny how the perlite floats to the top of the soil. The leaves are growing looking good and I am using your Hawaiian flower magic. I have mixed as required on the bottle(8 drops in quart of water). Don’t know if the roots have grown on the bottom of the plant yet. Wish I can send a pix but thanks again and re watch your planting video.
I hope the video helped. If possible plant outdoors in a shaded location once the weather is consistently above 50 at night
I moved the one from my in-laws place last summer....we had to cut the top 4' off, & had done that several times. Now it's time to try to root a part that's rotting....btw, been in the same pot 20+ years!
20 years omg! Love that
@@plantvibrations it REALLY liked where it was lol!
💚
You did a fantastic job explaining it all mine from bottom to top is about 5.5 ft tall how ever I would like the leaves to shine like yours any advice to what you do and the new side shutes can you cut them off and regrow one more thing I have a shute growing from under the soil what should I do thank you again
Definitely allow the shoot to continue to grow and once it comes out of the soil you could dig it out and repot it
Thanks for the informative video, can you please advise me of how to get the trunk to send out more shooting from a rooted trunk?
that is a bit more complicated. the best thing to do is to give it a chance to grow outside in the summer time to encourage the most robust growth and branching can occur naturally through that
Hi Devin
great video, what is the best soil to use when moving totem to 6 inch pot...
Houseplant bagged potting mix
Hello, Devin! Thank you for your awesome plant knowledge sharing!😊
I wanted to ask you: my Dracaena fragrans is big, looks healthy and thriving but it has lost all its variegation on the leaves, they have now a dark green color. My windows are low-e glass and my plant is in a bright spot, receiving good indirect light. Is it because it still doesn't have enough light or could be another reason? 🤔
Yes it sounds like that is the most likely reason!
Thanks for the introductory video ... I've had mine for a few years. I think I left it in the sun too much and many of the leaves are dried out, I think burnt. Should I cut them all back? Not sure what to do, as I assume they wont turn back to green. Any advise is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!
Yes cut them off! The sooner the better
Huh... weve had one bought in the Canary Islands like that, 6" long 2" wide, in the early 90'. Its grown to over 7 feet multiple times and when it does we cut it down. Doesnt takenthat ling either maybe 5years before it needs to be cut the next time 🤔 I inherited it from my mom a coupleof years ago and this time when i cut it i saved the whole stem and just cut it to pieces and stuck it down in the soil. Took a couple of month and now they have all shot new branches. Was just sitting and contemplating if i should cut them shorter to get more plants to share with my daughter 🤔
👍👍
I have one that's 7 years old and in the same size pot and it started out doing great with three starts then two died out and only one kept growing. This year its growing taller with very small starts coming from the center of the tallest part. I have pictures
Sounds like it’s trying to come back!
Thank you for this video! I bought a fairly large one from Walmart, and it was already potted with the red side up it was in rough condition, very dry but I managed to kinda bring it back to life it has two different trunks and one of them all the leaves fell off but it still has that node looking thing poking out of the side should i cut it off I don't know what to do it at this point please help....lol
Sounds like you scored a great plant! definitely allow the node to stay just where it is! once weather warms up, if you can put it in a shady area outside then the growth will really ramp up!
I got a cutting from QVC after hearing you mention them in a video, I believe in January '22. The directions included with it stated to remove it from water after 6 weeks whether it had roots or leaves or not. Mine did not but I placed it in a 6 inch pot & put it in a bright but indirect spot in a south window as per directions. It has got some protrusions at various spots around the top to mid cutting & some very slight vertical cracks at those points but no green showing. There is still some "sap" (?) dripping from the top which I'm hoping means the cutting is still viable. Is this just a matter of being patient or do I have a dead stump? Thanks for all your great content & enthusiasm!
hi! the sap coming from the top is good, means it is healthy and alive. with the warm weather, id recommend placing it outside in a place that is mostly shaded. maybe 1-2 hours of sunlight in the morning, but no direct hot sun. that combined with the warm weather will definitely get it kickstarted to grow!
❤❤❤❤❤
:)
Hello. I planted the log after about 8 weeks, but then the leaves went limp and started browning. I transferred them back into the water, and they are doing better. My only problem is the water starts smelling horrible after 2 days. Any advice?
Hi Devin. I received my good luck totem in April, two of them actually. One had roots after about 8 weeks so I potted it in a 6 inch pot. It’s doing great btw. But the second one is still in water. It has no roots and two shoots which are getting pretty big. Should I go ahead and pot it or wait longer for it to sprout some roots. I don’t want it to die! Thanks for your help. I love your channel.
If you can pot it up asap and place outside in a warm mostly shady area that would be ideal! While we still have some summery weather left
@@plantvibrations thanks Devin. I’m in Phoenix so plenty of warm weather left. It’s going to be 106 tomorrow!
Thanks for the video Devin! I broke a lot of roots trying to repot my plant. I want to try propagating by cutting the trunk but I live in Europe and it is quite cold at the moment. Do you think it could possibly work? Thanks!
I would wait until the weather is warmer or if you have a very warm area of your home then you could put your propagation there!
Hello, thank you for the vid! my plant came with the grey wax covering the top of its stem. I would love for the plant to grow taller. Would removing the rubber help it grow taller, or would it dry out the plant? appreciate the advice, thank you!
I would say it’s probably safe to remove the wax, but I don’t think that’ll help it grow taller. Only time can do that unfortunately
Great video!!! Any advise if mine is still a siick...I followed the direction s to a T...should I consider it dead or is there some rescue advise that you can give....Thanks
Can you place it outside in a sheltered area? That could help rescue it
I loved this video I need help I have a very very old corn plant the one you spoke of with the small trunk that was growing up until this summer where the leaves stop coming out of the stalk. I see the tips of two or three leaves but they are not coming out. Does this need to be cut and propagate. I don’t want to kill my plant. Help needed!
hmm did you have it outside during the summer? often the warmth and sunlight can help initiate better growth
No but it’s in a window that gets plenty of afternoon sunshine. It’s not dead but the leaves have stopped coming out if that makes any sense
Thank you for your response. Roots emanated out so I planted it in a 6inch pot. I planted it intoMerical Grow Potting Mix. Is that ok? Everyone in now telling me thar I should have planted it in a different soil mix. What do you think I should do?
was it potting mix for outdoor plants? if so, then it would be advisable to switch to an indoor houseplant potting mix
Merical Grow claims Potting Mix Grows Plants Twice as Big, thanks to a rich mix of organic matter and nutrients that ensure improved growth and better plant health. Feeds your plants for up to 6 months. Ideal for both indoor and outdoor container plants. What do you think? Should I just leave it in the Potting Mix?
Just make sure the soil doesn’t stay too moist for too long
Hi Devin, any tips on how to make my corn plant look bushier? Mine has long leaves but sparse… and anything I can do to promote buds from the main stalk? I’ve had it for about a year and one is just starting to bud now.
Perhaps increasing light could encourage more full growth
Devin we have a big one in our home! It's really grew tall wondering if we could propergate this plant?
nice! is it super thick like this? if so it will be a challenge to propagate it. if it is thinner, i have a video showing how to do so!
I have lots of roots but no leaf sprouts, dracanea...should I give up? It has been months...or recut the barren top off...some kind of growth stimulator?
the best growth stimulator is to place it outside once temperatures are at least 45-50F at night and leave outside all summer.
My Dracaena fragrans has root rot so I cut all of the roots off. What should I do now :/
I received a great piece from R’s/Q. 2-3” branches x3 but no true roots, just the white bumps after 2 months. Still keep in water and not plant in soil? Thanks!
Yes keep it in water until you see roots. Thats the best way to do it
Okay
ok!
Is it possible to cut the trunk to encourage more branches? Currently mine is only growing branches at the very top -- how do I encourage more branches to grow lower down on the trunk?
Sometimes they will branch out when cut. Typically they will just shoot out a single stem though
I received a corn plant several years ago when my brother passed away. I usually keep it outside on my carport and take it inside during the colder temps in LA. It has now grown up and toward the sun branching into rather spindly branches with greenery at top. If I cut the greenery off do I need to try to root any part of the tops? And is there a possibility the major stalk that is in soil will grow and sprout babies? If I can possibly save this plant, please share with me how to go about doing this. Thank you
Hi Cathy! Have you seen my video about propagating Dracaena? I demonstrate how you can do so to save your plant
Nice, What is the trick to make it multiple sprout in different heights? thanks
I will try to find out!
I have a plant that is about 20 inches long with a shoot growing off it about two inches from the top. The outer covering of the pole is flaking off and underneath this covering are areas of fungal growth. What should I do about the fungus?
Try using ground cinnamon on the areas of fungus
I have a dracanae that every time I water (I use Distilled water) leaves turn brown at the edges and tips and the brown begins to creep to other leaves. I don't know what it is and I only have a few leaves left on the plant. Help! What can I do? Should I just chop the whole thing and start over?!
I’m not sure if there’s a connection btw your watering schedule and the brown leaves. Try placing it outside in a shady area during the warm months
The pole came with both ends waxed and ready to be planted. Can we further cut the totem pole into 2 pieces according to our desired length if we get a longer piece? Thanks 🙏
You certainly can, just make sure you know which side is up!
Got my plant from QVC. The instructions said to plant after it was in the water 6-8weeks. Didn't see any roots, but got several large sprouts on the side. Planted without root, but sprouts. Did I plant it in dirt too soon? If so, what should I do?
If you are able to place it outside in a shaded location during the summer, that will help kickstart growth
I have had two of these plants for about 4 months. Neither one is growing leaves. I followed directions before planting them in pots. The only activity I saw was some sap coming out the top and some nodules forming on the sides that look more like mold and never developed. Any advice?
Sometimes they can take awhile. If you can place them somewhere warmer that can help
I went to your website but they're not in stock when are they going to be in stock dude
Hi I ordered three from QVC. One looks good but the other two barely have any growth. There might be a protrusion of about the size of a nickel. Any suggestions? Thanks
Are they still in water? If not, place them back in water until a substantial root system forms
Great video! I have about a 2-3 foot tall one currently in my dorm room, but I’ve been noticing the leaves start to limp and curl up. There is also small holes at the ends of some of the leaves. I just recently moved it out of direct sunlight. And i have tried to make sure not to over water it. I’ve been watering about every Sunday checking the soil beforehand. Do you have any recommendations to get my leaves back up? Thank you.
Are the leaves turning white/gray? Did you all of the sudden put it in direct sunlight? If the sun was quite intense you may have sunburned the leaves. Over the coming weeks if they start to turn gray then that was the cause. They need to be introduced slowly to more light over the course of a week or so
@@plantvibrations I’ve had the plant for 4 months and it’s been in direct sunlight the whole entire time. I am pretty sure that is the issue. I have moved it away just now though. On some of the leaves there are tiny holes which look like burn marks. Can those heal?

How do you make it to have more growth on the side? I have one with 3 trunks but only 2 have growth on it
It’s really just a question of them. They’ll branch out over the course of many years
How to encourage new sprouts in the long stump? Without cutting
I’ve never had success encouraging that
I have one that's about 4ft tall (was bought that large). Unfortunately, it had two stalks in the pot and one of them died. I've had it for around a year and a half and it has spent two summers outside. However, its growth has been minimal (in fact, some of the shoots have died off). I've unpotted it twice (around a year apart) and the root system is very small...to the point that it's top heavy and will fall over if it doesn't have something to lean on (don't ask me how I know, ugh). How can I get it to grow stronger, deeper roots and push out more growth?
Great question. I recommend repotting it in a smaller pot. They often need a small pot to induce good rooting. And that will encourage better top growth too
I just was gifted one, and it has two places where it was cut sealed with black wax. Should I scrape it off? Will new branches grow from there?
You only want to scrape off the side that goes into the water to rehydrate it. Is there an indication which side is up?
Thanks for the great video, Devin! Do you have any tips on encouraging the cutting to grow wider and taller? Lastly, my plant has multiple healthy growths from the cutting but there are multiple new growths popping up at the same spot in a conflicting way with other branches. Do you think should I do something about it or just let it be?
the only way for them to grow thicker is over time, and lots of it. consistently chopping it back to encourage it to become thicker is what you need to do. if it looks like they will disrupt each others growth you can snub one of the buds out, just take you thumb and literally rub it off. absolutely no harm in doing so
What is the best soil for Dacena? Are they prone to root rot and any other root diseases? Is it recommended to seal the bottom to prevent disease from entering the trunk? I think the roots would grow out of the bark anyways.
Bagged houseplant potting mix is fine. Just ensure it totally dries out between watering and you won’t need to worry about root rot
@@plantvibrations Thank you
Mine turn to yellow what can I do? I love the good luck name
Are you giving it any decent light?
So was the white protrusions roots starting? Wondering because my cutting has many white protrusions like that, wandering if they are going to be roots or if they are some type of mold, thank you for your help!
Could either be roots or growth points emanating out!
@@plantvibrations Awesome! Thanks for the response, its been about 3 weeks and about 7-12 of these white spots came up over the last ten 10 days, I will continue with it then, see how it goes, excited to see what happens, I didn't want to keep it going if it was some type of fungus. But if it sounds normal, I will not give up on it yet! Have a great day!
i have my oriental totem pole from qvc for 2 or 3 years now. completed the soaking process initially. been in a 6 inch pot for years. i have no more than tiny nubs of green that are around the trunk. no leaves have ever come out. i re-potted last week, still no roots. is this a bust? or is there something I can do to facilitate growth. not ready to give up just yet unless my efforts are futile.
hi marcy. id recommend placing back in the water until you find it growing roots. the other way to facilitate growth is to place it outside in the summer. that will greatly kickstart growth
Does this plant grow babies? I planted it in soil about 2 wks ago and I have 2 small green shoots emerging from the soil an inch or 2 from the trunk
They can!
Mine was doing well in soil for over a year, and recently two of the stalks that already have several leaves on them turned brown and started to droop. The soil may have gotten too dry. I'm wondering if I should prop them up, or cut them off?
If they look dried out and dying best to remove and compost them
@plantvibrations Most of the leaves on the stalks are still green, if that makes a difference?
Purchased a Good Luck Oriental Totem Pole ( Dracaena fragrans ) Kept it in water for 8 weeks and it grew nice leaves.
After 8 weeks 4/22/2022 I transferred it to soil in a 6” pot. Since April the same leaves remain but
there is no new growth. I thought maybe the pot was too small so it transferred it to a 10” pot.
During the transfer when I removed the pole from the old soil I noticed there were no roots on the log.
Should I leave the pole in the new pot and soil or should I remove it and place it in water to see if it grows roots?
Best to place back in water until roots emanate out
Thank you for such a great video! I took a corn plant from a person who hasn’t watered it for 4 months, and it stood in the dark. I had to cut off a lot of the leaves. I took better care but not as well as I should have. I had to cut off more leaves. I looked and the small new leaves on the inside (which are just coming out) are also brown. Is this plant done or is there still a chance I can save it? Thank you ahead of time for your reply :)
I am back! Nevermind about my comment. I just cut a part of the plant where the leaves grow and it’s all cracked and dry. Pulled the stem and it came out quickly out of the soil. Threw it out. I have learned a lesson from such an experience. Love your plants and take care of them.
Thank you anyways!
As long as the trunk is nice and firm and isn’t caving in anywhere then it should be ok! If possible place it outside in a spot with morning sun once the temps are consistently above 45f at nighys

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate the advice!
Hi Gavin
I have rescued a trunk. There are no leaves or buds on the trunk.
I have planted it in water for two months but still no signs of budding.what can I do.
This plant is indoor I can not place it outside. Should I take it out of the water and plant it in a pot with potting soil ?
Yes you can put it in soil. Providing bottom heat from a heat mat can be very helpful to initiate root growth
Thank you for information my corn plant is almost 8 feet tall my husband keeps telling me to cut her 😂 that’s not happening till I run out of room .Glad to see your plants aren’t in large pot wasn’t sure what size I needed. We’re can we buy from you ? I want another
I forgot to say your are beautiful
Oooh nice!! i hope mine get to 8' tall eventually! you can find my family's stuff at robertasgardens.net !
I have the same plant but leaves dropping down and it start brown and yellow leaves starting. Any suggestions
Try increasing the light
Hi Devin.. i just have a naked pole. How do i get it to sprout leaves??? Help please
Can you place it outside? That’s the best thing to do
Hi, mine the leaves to turn brown, I keep it inside the house where didn’t get much sunlight, but their leaves still look burn, do you know what is wrong? Thanks
Inspect the foliage for bugs, perhaps spider mites could be causing it)
Do you ever scrape the green wax?
We keep that sealed so it doesn’t lose moisture from within
Mine got root rot and lost all roots, still a few green shoots on top and a new shoot, can I cut the bottom off and place the top half into water? Will the top cutting root again? I cut the cane at the bottom and it was black, but a bit higher it was not.
Yes that’s exactly what you should do - cut the top and root in water
I have a plant like that but the leaves are much smaller. Are they the same?
It could be a different kind of Dracaena
Hi,any idea why my protrusion became brown and died, the rest of the top leaves seem to be ok.
As long as everything else is all good, then you should be fine
Nice video. I have one question. I put my Dracaena fragrans plant in water. But no growth. Roots are coming. But growth is not there.
Plant it up and place outside in a shaded area
Ok
I am Groot!
Haha
Followed the instructions that came with my order from QVC. Was in the water for 8weeks, no roots, but several large sprouts. Is that okay? If not, what should I do?
I’d let it stay in water a little longer to help encourage roots
I apologize for not clarifying, prior to seeing your video, I already planted in a 6 inch pot. Should I leave it in the pot or remove it and put it back in water until I get some roots. Please let me know. Thanks
My plant looks healthy, I gave it a liquid fertilizer. It's been growing leaves, but it has zero roots after 16 weeks!
Can you put outside?
How do you get them to grow in a staggered appearance, like steps?
It happens over time naturally
My plant has 3 thick woody trunks growing out of 1 base mother plant. Each has 2-3 shoots. They're all growing upward into each other. Any suggestions? Been a Robert's customer for 15 years! My gardens look like postcards!
Love hearing that! Hmm do you need to cut one off?
@@plantvibrations So long as it doesn't kill the plant. It's like 3 totem poles growing out of 1 thick base. Like when a tree trunk separates into thick branches. Would it be better to just leave it in tact & trim the shoots?
Purchase Brazilian Wood off Amazon is sure which side is up or which side is down how do I tell
you'll have to contact the seller
I purchased the totem pole plant 11 months ago and still haven’t gotten any roots. I have leaves but no roots. I still have it in water and change the water 2x a week. I noticed the bark is beginning to separate from the log and in that area the log is shrinking . I don’t know what to do I haven’t had any luck with this plant in the past…. Please help thank you
I’d recommend transferring to soil. And if possible place it on a heat pad until spring rolls around and then give it time

Hi Devin woplou1 again.
I received my 2nd totem Pole Plant in March 2023 and placed it in water. It is doing good with many leaves but no roots.
Derrek was on TV last week and said that after you see sprouts come out you can plant it in soil.
I have many leaves getting big but no roots. Your video tells me don't place in soil until you see roots. What should I do?
Have you tried using a heat pad to induce roots? That would be my recommendation for encouraging roots. Or you can plant it up and place outside in a shaded area when it warms up
This plant is indoor I can not place it outside. Should I take it out of the water and plant it in a pot with potting soil ?@@plantvibrations
Hi is it possible to cut out the pups and propagafe them?
Yes it is!
Hi! I couldn't find the directions on what happens after rooting so I put it outside in sunshine after I planted it a pot. So is he going to suffer now that I need to get it out of the sun? What do you suggest for my next move? Thanks.
Morning sun would be just the right amount
@@plantvibrations Thanks! He has been in full sun, about 6 hours a day, for about 3 weeks now. After your video, I moved him to a semi-shady spot but it gets afternoon sun. My yard is full sun with baby spots of shade. How will he look if he starts getting too much sun?
Hello. I purchased a similar Totem Pole while on vacation. Unfortunately, the wax on both sides was light. Watching your video, it seems to me that I could have put it in the water backwards. A year will pass soon and the leaves are there, but not the roots. Can this be verified somehow? Should I turn it over now? What do you suggest?
if it is producing leaves correctly then you have done the correct side. if you can pot it up and place outside once it warms up that will be very helpful
@@plantvibrations Unfortunately I can't add a photo here. Okay, I'll do that. Do you recommend a specific soil mixture, permeable or regular peat soil?
Hi there! Maybe you can help me out. I had my plant growing just fine and suddenly got rot on one of the side branches and I had to cut it off to prevent rot from taking over the whole plant. Its now doing well but no new growth, no new shoots. What do you recommend? Please help!
It is probably still using a lot of energy to heal the wound internally. Give it time and it’ll restart its growth

Hi, so names like Hawaiian delight and moonlight are specific varieties of Dracaena. Dracaena is the scientific latin name and corn plant is a common name for Dracaena
Is there a point of no return with the stems? How would I know if it can’t be brought back?
If it turns mushy or smelly then it has rotted. You could cut the top section off and follow the Advice in my video about propagating Dracaena
