I used your suggestions for pruning and had super great results. This is an amazing technique and easy to accomplish. If you are sensitive, just consider it is plant yoga poses, they will love you for it!!
That's a GREAT news and I am so glad to know about your result! Obviously you have done a great job! Again, loved your humor..ha ha...Yoga poses, that's really nice..he he..
I also saw this video sometime last year and thought it was worth a shot. I wish you could upload images in the comments. I had combined a Ficus Aurdey with me Elasticia and since i wanted to keep them together I followed your example and bent them both in almost a complete upside down "U" and anchored them to wooden skewers (like for the grill) I took a photo on 6/13/23 and some in between to record the results and finally the end date was 10/13/23 and the results were amazing. The best thing was that i didn't have any trouble straightening them out. The bending was not permanant.
I tried this method last year Oct 22 thru April 2022 and the experiment yielded positive results. I conducted the experiment during the off season, so I didnt see new nodes pop up until the 4th month. So, the key is definitely patience!! Thank you for sharing
I just laid it on the floor as it grew 8ft tall and was falling down every now and then due to wind. After keeping it laid down on the floor for 2 weeks it gave side branches automatically. (To be noted that I watered it regularly though by making it stand)
I've found spraying the branches with water often will moisten and promote new growth where those cracks are where the new growth usually starts..but i love the technique thanks for sharing!!
there's a very good reason why this works and why it would also work to just prune off the top growth or put the whole plant on its side. This guy didn't go into it at all and I doubt he knew it otherwise he'd explain. just putting it on its side is the simplest way to remove the 'top'
From my bonsai knowledge, I believe those bending create small cracks on the trunk that stimulates branching out. And also of course like you said the tree is looking for more light & growing upward.
Auxin induces shoot apical dominance. The axillary buds are inhibited by auxin, as a high concentration of auxin directly stimulates ethylene synthesis in lateral buds, causing inhibition of their growth and potentiation of apical dominance. When the apex of the plant is removed, the inhibitory effect is removed and the growth of lateral buds is enhanced. Auxin is sent to the part of the plant facing the light, and this promotes growth towards that direction.
I'm so happy that I stumbled across this video!! I was just wondering what to do with my fiddle leaf fig and my rubber trees since they were just growing straight up and it made me cringe to even think about cutting them because they were almost dead when I got them and it's been a long road to get them where they are now. For example, my FLF was bought on clearance for 1.99 because it was basically a stick with two leaves on it. Now it's got at least twenty leaves and it's doing great! So I'm definitely going to try this method rather than pruning her back! Thank you!!!

But, obviously felt bad and so I wrote - "Wish, I could've uploaded much earlier.." Anyway, happy growing more plants and totally agree with your words..Internet is a great thing :-)
Thank you so much for this technique!! I pruned my rubber plant 4-5 months ago and it hasn't grown at all since; instead it actually lost some of the bottom leaves :( Now with the weather turning warmer in the southern hemisphere, I'm hoping it will revive and branch. Could you share any tips on reviving the plant? Thanks in advance!
This method worked for me, I've bent my plant before summer and it started growing two new branches after 3 months. The plant growth affected during summer, I don't if that is the reason why it took so long to show branches. Thank you sir.. It helped me a lot..
Thanks for sharing these valuable informations. The appearance of your sweet baby in the video made me so happy. She is so cute and adorable really I love her. She reminds me of my grand daughter who is now living in Pune. Let God shower His blessings upon her through out her life.
Ficus have dormant buds in each node. Move your tree outside in the summer and it will usually backbud without much fuss. The reason rubber trees get leggy is we starve them for light by keeping them inside.
Can confirm, I live in a area where we get cold winters, but this summer, I put my rubber fig outside. After letting it adjust to direct sunlight, It started to bud EVERYWHERE on the trunk! I have like 4 new branches now and it produced beautiful big leaves. I can recommend everyone to put their houseplants outside if possible. Houseplants? More like "winter houseplants".
Yes its worked..it happen to me by accidentally i dont give attention to my leggy rubber tree then it goes bending for a month and suprisingly they start growing new branches 😊 100% agreed this method..also it happen to other plants too..natures finds there ways to live,,AMAZING
So glad to hear it and thank you for sharing your experience! And totally agree with you, happens with any plants and I usually do it with vines to control them and to make them bushy :-)
I propagated my Ruby rubber plant its doing well I have two trees in that pot and did a cutting from each tree. One cutting do well othe has not rooted nor has its new shoot opened after a month. I was cringing the whole time you were helping this tree great job Sir!
It's mindblowing! Thank you for the video, I have a small rubber plant with a soft bendy stem, that would be a fun experiment. And I Iove your accent, you make english sound way more interesting! (Not a native speaker myself)
Glad you liked it and thank you very much for your feedback! Yeah, if it has a single stem, it is better to follow this. But, we can get good result by pruning too..I did same for one of my plant (having single stem) and result was quite satisfactory. Have a video in case you are interested in watching - ua-cam.com/video/B3X_e6DbTq8/v-deo.html
So this has similar aspects in it to Bonsai methods. Makes perfect sense. Have a ? Do you twist the plant the opposite direction to get new growth encourage on they other side so the plant is fairly symmetrical all around or does the plant spout on bottom side that is shaded and then correct its self when you return the plant to the upright position? Hope this ? Makes sense. Thanks 😊
@Debbie Fox, You are 100% correct 😊 Mostly used in Bonsai..and even on Adenium too to force them to produce more branches. Twisting is not necessary..or else the stem might break. Actually, kept the growing point facing west (as there is a wall just behind the plant) This way, it had to produce new growth which can get more light from east side. But anyway, doing exactly same like me is not necessary (like, keeping behind a wall and facing to west). All plants would produce new growth because of their natural growing habit. If I cut the rope, it would correct itself in coming days. For that, I would just need to make sure that it's getting light from all side. If it's not possible, we can just adjust the location of the plant based on the direction of the light. All plants always bend in case there is a wall behind it and light is coming from other side. I hope, I have answered your question..if somehow I got it wrong, please let me know. Thank you!
Even notching and making rings around the stem helps in getting side branches I've done it on all ficus group of plants and was successful. Anyway thanks for your new method.
Yeah, that also works and thank you very much for sharing your experience here, appreciated! Have a you tried the same method (in reverse way) to control the height of the plant? In some plants, we can do that. But haven't tried on Rubber plant yet. Please let me know your experience if you have done.
Notching has never ever worked for me. Ive tried it on three different plants, multiple times, all now 6 feet tall. Nothing! Not even a single bud. The plants are all super healthy though. Gonna try this method starting today.
Im gonna try this. My elastica has not grown at all since i got it last summer. Now it has two big leaves that are hanging straight down along side the stem after the other 7 fell off one by one about 1 a month. Thanks so much for this Vidio so glad it came up in my notifications. Have definatly subscribed and nice one for the subtitles. Helps alot.
You are most welcome and I am so glad to know about your result, GREAT job indeed! One more thing - I believe you have noticed there was no music in the video..ha ha..did that just for you! Not all time it's possible as lots of constructions works going around here and busy roads nearby..but, whenever possible, I would do it!
Great Video and very interesting to make the plant busy. I have a very large plant in a pot outside (Western Australia) lots of sun therefore growing very high with some branches sparse of leaves. Pruning has resulted in more lower leaves, happy with this. My concern is how to keep the plant a reasonable size (currently two (2) meters high) and busy as it a main feature of my entry. Will pruning the top cause the plant to be root bound. Thank you. I enjoy your videos and great advise on rubber plants.
Great video! Is it possible to achieve such results even if the stem still has leafs or should I remove some and then try to bend it? I have my rubber plant for almost 4 years now, unfortunately it has only one stem. Tried your other method last year (by pruning the top part) unfortunately my plant just kept growing as usual, haha.
Glad you liked it and thank you so much for your feedback. Sure, it is possible and please avoid removing the leaves. You can bend the stem without even removing any leaves. Again, sorry to hear that Pruning didn't work out for you. Normally it does if all goes well (need hard pruning). Anyway, sometimes plants just like to behave in their own way..he he..and don't grow like we want. I have pruned many of my Rubber plants (including the one I have shown in last year's video) again and soon I would share the result. Thank you!
I saw some massive rubber trees in mexico this year and most of the branches actually point downwards but they don’t branch out. So I think you damaged the stem which is causing the growth lower down. Interesting technique though! Are you planning to straighten the plant back up or will you be pruning the top once the new shoots fill in more? I’d love to see an update in a few months. Thanks for sharing
my rubber plant's stem is too hard due to being tall already and i need to do the same fix you've explained in this video. for harder stems, what would you recommend? thanks for this informative video.
I’m shocked!! 🤯😳 my plant is very leggy looks just like the first plant I’m so scared to bend it. Once the leaves come in at the lower part of the stem then what do you do untie it and does it straighten back up?
@Mrs. Loya, Please don't get scared to bend the plant..actually, it's quite safer than pruning. >> Once the leaves come in at the lower part of the stem then what do you do untie it and does it straighten back up? We just need to simply cut the rope and it would grow like normal plants. But, we can help the plant to do that faster simply providing the light from opposite direction. Means, if the main stem was aiming to the left side, provide more light from the right side (after cutting the rope). Eventually, it would straighten up itself. I would update it soon...Good luck :-)
Sir may I ask you question? I have bought rubber plant on line. It was last Dec 11,2022 but only delivered Jan 11,2023. It looks disaster in the box because the rubber plant are already partially rotten due to super wet, i guess because the leaves is already tangle down. Whats left was the 2 stem with very wet small amount of soil that placed in small plastic. What I did is I immediately repot in dry and well draining soil and place it in balcony where no direct exposure of sunlight, 😢 do you think my rubber plant can still grow? Although in the uppermost stem has small leaf that were about to bloom unfortunately sue to the stress inside the box while on transit make lots of leaves fell off.
that’s beautiful I had my rubber tree for 4 months no new leaves yet I cut the tip (without the leaf just the tip)at the top part to bloom new leaf,I’m nit sure if I did it right, or should I cut the tip with a leaf also? please let me know if I did the right thing
I had used this technique on my leggy Banyan bonsai, most grew branched & a few areal roots, next I’ll chop off the ends during monsoons to get compact canopy 🤞
Thanks a lot! Very informative! Though I have a question how to deal with the "opposite" side of tank when we have new multipul growth points on the other side. How to bend and not to damage new growth?
If you want bushier rubber plant simply cut or remove the new growth from the top.. And than see the magic... Tried and tested Successfully.... My tinke fully lush and bushier 🍀🌱🌿💯🙏
My rubber plates are growing so big but I don't won't to cut them down incase they diy. But the one plant keeps getting yellow leaves what can I do please 🙏
@Larrissa Anderton, Obviously, I won't mind at all and there is nothing to...:-) Those are Coleus..The same Coleus plant that I have shown here - ua-cam.com/video/osPbA3y6gBU/v-deo.html Because it's Summer, Color is looking bit different. Coleus changes the color depending on the sunlight exposure! Thank you!
Woukd it work to just... place the plant at an angle, without bending it? And once it has new branches on one side, the have it at the opposite angle, to get branches on both side and keep the main trunk growing?
I just tried this method on my verigated rudder plant on 28july iam waiting for the result...At 1st i was so scared to do this for my plant but after reading yoga pose in comments...iam convinced😂
Very good informative video ....I killed my rubber plant earlier last summer ....never tried again due to harsh weather here ....very effective tips ...thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for your feedback and sorry to know..Since it's too hot over there, I believe you can grow all these Heat Tolerant plants - ua-cam.com/video/7M11juZaJ_8/v-deo.html It's an old video and I would try to update the list in coming days, thank you!
My rubber plant dying indoor.. i transplanted it from red soil to normal good drainage soil but its still dying slowly..now i have kept with cover with transparent plastic.. Please help
If it's on older leaves (only on few leaves), it's okay and there is nothing to worry about. But if it's more, there are issue with Light and Water. More water n lack of light causes this issue. Plus, please protect your plant from mid-day or afternoon sunlight if temperature is high in your place. In winter, we don't face any issue even if we keep under full sun for the whole day. Hope that helps, thank you!
Sure..it works with any plants. But while doing for Fiddle leaf fig plant, please be careful! The stems are not much flexible like Rubber plants, thank you!
Hey....my ixora plant are not blooming at all.. though it's the blooming season, and plant is in ground,it gets whole day of direct sunlight,,,,,...it is normal variety not dwarf, should I place it in a place where it gets semi shade?...i really want to get bloom ...plzzz to tell
Your plant is in ground and getting direct sunlight..but still not blooming! That's somewhat wired!!! May I know if you have pruned your plants? If you did it just few days back or even 1 month earlier, it would take sometime to bloom. But if it's not, please apply either Bonemeal or Rock phosphate in soil surrounding the base of the plant. As it's in ground, you can apply around 100 grams without any issue. Hope that helps..but I am quite sure that your plant would bloom. It's just taking some more time.
I used your suggestions for pruning and had super great results. This is an amazing technique and easy to accomplish. If you are sensitive, just consider it is plant yoga poses, they will love you for it!!

Any basic disruption in hormone flow.
Auxin
Auxin induces shoot apical dominance. The axillary buds are inhibited by auxin, as a high concentration of auxin directly stimulates ethylene synthesis in lateral buds, causing inhibition of their growth and potentiation of apical dominance. When the apex of the plant is removed, the inhibitory effect is removed and the growth of lateral buds is enhanced. Auxin is sent to the part of the plant facing the light, and this promotes growth towards that direction.
Is that the purpose of the bending?!
I tried this on a tree with nothing but a single leaf left. Amazing results
Lol!
You can count the leaves before and after . 2 different.

Sorry for the late reply n glad to here it did work for you!
Wonderful method. Love your suggestions... What I like most is your updates..

Glad you liked it and thank you So much for your words, much appreciated!
Ya it’s true…amazing. I tried this technique 😊
Thank you so much for your inputs 😀
Sir please tell can v do tis method for fiddle leaf plant
I had used this technique on my leggy Banyan bonsai, most grew branched & a few areal roots, next I’ll chop off the ends during monsoons to get compact canopy 🤞
That's great to hear that you also tried and it's growing well..All the best with your Bonsai!
Do you think this will work for more hardy plants? I have a leggy curry-leaf tree I would like to try this but I'm scared of killing it
Sure, it would work..but for curry lea plant, you can just prune it. It's Monsoon and so it would grow back fast..wish you all the best!
Wow! This is something different! Loved it!
@Rekha Khanal, Glad you liked it and thank you for your words Rekha!
Success !! Thank you so much 👏🏻 so amazed it worked for me
Omg his right tysvm I did this midsummer its fall now and wow too many babies came out
So glad to hear and thank you so much for sharing your experience, AWESOME!
Nice video. Real fact. What do you think would happen if we just position the pot horizontally?
My rubber plates are growing so big but I don't won't to cut them down incase they diy. But the one plant keeps getting yellow leaves what can I do please 🙏
Awesome video! Can you do this to a Fiddle Fig Tree? If yes, do you have a video for it?
during what month we should do this process, as per Indian seasons
Spring or summer is the best as it's growing season 🙂
Tq for this info... allowed me to share this video whit others.😊
Most welcome and thank you so much for doing that, really appreciated 😊
I hope it will work for my rubber plant😍great😍
Bonsai rubber plant with that wire! Brilliant
After we get the new shots, should we remove the wire and try to straighten the plant or what?
Yes..we can do that or else, wait for some more days and then remove the stick. Thank you!
at 6:12 what are those small pink and yellow plants at the bottom of the screen if you don't mind?
@Larrissa Anderton, Obviously, I won't mind at all and there is nothing to...:-) Those are Coleus..The same Coleus plant that I have shown here - ua-cam.com/video/osPbA3y6gBU/v-deo.html
Because it's Summer, Color is looking bit different. Coleus changes the color depending on the sunlight exposure! Thank you!
Woukd it work to just... place the plant at an angle, without bending it? And once it has new branches on one side, the have it at the opposite angle, to get branches on both side and keep the main trunk growing?
can i do this to my schefflera plant
Can i prune my black prince rubber plant even though it is only 1 feet tall? Thank you
Sure, we can..but, please avoid doing hard pruning. You can just pinch the new growth from the top or bit more if you like. Wish you all the best!
@@GardeningUpbeat thank you for the tips

My rubber plant dying indoor.. i transplanted it from red soil to normal good drainage soil but its still dying slowly..now i have kept with cover with transparent plastic..

Hi Sir. My rubber plant is drooping so I kept it in the sunlight and now it is completely drooped. What should I do?
Can you do this with fiddle leaf figs too?
Sure, we can do this!
Thanks for sharing mate! This is a great video, keep it up 🤟😃
Do you think I might be able to use this technique with an umbrella plant?
Yes, absolutely n wish you all the best. This method is applicable to all plants because of the natural reason.
@@GardeningUpbeat Wow. thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I went a head and did this, and am hoping for some new growth!
Great technique!🤗
Can focus lyrata be done this way sir ?
Of course..we can do same for any plants..sir is not required though!
Nice! I will definitely try this method.
Wish you all the best :-)
Wonderful idea 👍
please advise what I should do to prevent brown / black dryness on the sides of the leaves. i have the same rubbrr plant .
Harika bilgiler çok teşekkür ederim
I am sitting here very shocked! But I see it does work!
Hi chandan, good technique.let me also try my hands at it. Tq
Thank you very much :-) Sure, wish you all the best and you can do this with any plants which are leggy!
@@GardeningUpbeat ok
Will this technique work with Fiddle leaf fig plant?
Sure..it works with any plants. But while doing for Fiddle leaf fig plant, please be careful! The stems are not much flexible like Rubber plants, thank you!
Does this work with cordyline?
Thanku soo much 😊..
