    Or my website where I have a lot of other great tutorials (such as how to take a screenshot, or how to get the start button back on Windows 8): www.allhow2s.com
    This is a general video on how to replace the RAM or Memory in a laptop computer. These steps may be a bit different, and in some cases totally different, than what you have to do to get your RAM out. But the general idea is the same, so if you follow these steps, you will be able to replace your memory.
    First, get a service manual for your laptop. Some are very easy to find, others extremely difficult. You should be able to find a free copy of your somewhere around the internet though. An example of one is this for my laptop (Inspiron 17R Special Edition 7720): ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-17r-se-7720_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
    Next, decide if you want to use an ESD strap or not. I have never used one and have never had a problem, but you could be the one in a million where it's an issue. So if you want to live dangerously, just touch something metal to discharge your static before working on the laptop, and wear shoes. If you want to use an ESD strap, this is an example of what you would get: www.amazon.com/Belkin-Anti-Sta... These just basically make it much harder for you to build up a static charge that you could shock a component with.
    Next, shut down the laptop and remove all power sources from it. This includes the Wall plug, and the battery.
    After this, it is time to disassemble the laptop to get to the RAM. This can include several different methods. The easiest method is the one shown in the video where the RAM can be found under the covers on the bottom of the laptop. Unfortunately, not all laptops are made like this. The next "class" would be having to remove the whole bottom to get to the memory. A good example of this is the 2011 Macbook Pros, where you have to take out 6 screws, and then the entire bottom comes out. Another version is where you'll have to take all the screws out of the bottom, then take the keyboard out, then remove screws from under the keyboard, and then separate the laptop into 2 halves. This is the worst version to deal with, and can be seen on quite a few Acer models, older HP's, and many Netbooks.
    So once you know how you need to get to the memry, you can proceed with taking it apart. Make sure you have a system for keeping track of which screws go where. One method I use is taking a video of the disassembly process that I can rewatch to put it back together. Another method is to draw a rough picture of the laptop and put double sided tape over it. Then whenever you take a screw out, stick it on the picture where it goes.
    So now you can start taking out the screws. Make sure to apply a decent amount of direct downward force, but not enough to break the plastic. If you try to apply pressure at an angle, or don't use enough pressure, then you are much more likely to strip the screw and will create huge problems for yourself.
    Some screws need to be taken out of the laptop entirely, while other screws stay embedded in the plastic. So if a screw seems stuck, don't get out the needlenose and rail on it. Usually the trick is that if it's difficult to get out, it's supposed to stay in.
    After you have take out the screws needed to get to the RAM (you may have to repeat this step and the last multiple times if you laptop has layers to go through) pull on the plastic covering gently to remove it. Some of the plastic coverings will have clips that need to be gently removed, so apply a little force to stuck areas to test if there are clips, but generally if the plastic is not coming apart easily, it's either not meant to come apart, or you forgot to take out a screw.

    THIS IS HELPFUL TO THE MAX.
    I recently got just cause 3, and it was saying I have low memory, I checked the page of the website I got it off, and it said 8 gb. My computer crashed a number of times, and I checked direct x. it said 8 gigs. so I asked my friend if he was having the same issue, as his computer had almost identical stats to mine, and he said no. this was veeeery weird. so, I am looking to buy more ram, and I use this as a kind of warm up for when I get the ram. And you know what?! there was ONE. STICK. OF. 4. GIGS. And I got the computer off of amazon Prime! I'm not happy with them, and I will be getting more ram immediately. Still, really im0ressive that jc3 can run off of 4 gb of ram. Thank you again.

      +howtwos101 I wanted to take the screws out and I stripped the one in the middle. How do I take it out without drilling?

    • @howtwos101
      @howtwos101  8 років тому

      One thing to try is a flat head screwdriver, because you may be able to get enough grip where it's not stripped (usually a phillips will strip the center and leave some on the sides) after that, if it is at all slightly accessible, try gripping the edges with pliers and unscrewing it that way. The last thing to try, if it is your only option, is to get something thin and straight, and superglue it to the screw (make sure to get a brand that bonds well to metal and the material you are gluing it to) then twist it out. You have to be really careful with this method and use only a very small amount of glue, because any extra will leak over the sides of the screw and actually glue it down, basically making it impossible to remove.

    i have an hp elitebook and i removed the ram and put it back in just to see if i can do it without messing up. but when i turned it on, the screen wont load and there's 2 flashing icons on like its hotbar or something. this might be equivalent to the blinking noises that the laptop might do that you talked about. of course i did remove it again and put it back but it just wont work again. can you give me some advice on what should i possibly do to make it work again?

    • @7.59-fmclosed7

      You probably broke something while opening the laptop itself since there are some laptops where you need to pop out the cover using a knife in order to open the laptop, if your laptop is one of those, you probably accidentally cut a wire inside the laptop.

    Or do both of the count as one?

    • @howtwos101
      @howtwos101  6 років тому

      There are 2. The computer would operate with just one, but some memory operates as dual channel, where it is faster if you have 2 sticks instead of 1. Generally, you want the two sticks to be identical but there are plenty of cases of mismatched RAM working fine.

    • @howtwos101
      @howtwos101  6 років тому +1

      It doesn't necessarily need to be the same size (mixing 2GB with a 4GB stick is fine) but it is important for it to be the same speed (PC3200 needs to be matched with another PC3200)

    Buying a Lenovo IdeaPad 130, 4gb of ram 500gb hard drive. I went to the questions and answers section and some guy asked if it was possible to upgrade, the answer was no it wasn't user upgrade and had one RAM slot but I was wondering how it would be integrated like would it become apart of the laptops motherboard or would it just be a little harder to take out and easy to put it back in..? Do I really have to let a certified technician do all this? This is probably a very stupid question but I would thank you if you took time out of your day to answer this.

      +Michael K Some newer laptops, especially Ultrabook have started coming with non removable batteries, but this does not mean the ram cannot be replaced. My new laptop (G752 Asus) doesn't have a removable battery, but the ram can still be replaced.
      I would suggested googling your laptop model number for a service manual, that will give you clear instructions for replacing the ram if it is possible in your laptop.

    pls sorry I am new to this does changing my ram delete my entire or any files on my pc or is RAM and HDD storage a different thing , thanks .

      RAM holds data only temporary and only when a PC is powered on. HDD is different and holds data even when the pc is powered off. RAM is more expensive per Gigabyte but its much faster, while HDD is slower but can hold much more data so its used for storing data for long time.
      So dont worry, ram is not holding any files! Ram memory is only being used from programs so they can run, the programs themselves are installed on the HDD and when you open the pc or double click to open a program only then they load into the faster RAM memory!

      Yup, mac's will have a compatible ram list, but pretty much any ram at that speed will work.

    You have been added to watch later. I plan on getting a cheap laptop, with 4gb, and hopefully, RAM is cheaper than getting an 8gb RAM laptop, lol

      It probably is cheaper than Desktop RAM. I plan on using it for college purposes. However, I wanna be able to play a few games, on the go.

      +TheGamingNerd 8gb is enough for games although not quiet good enough for the high games which is why im hoping to get atleast 16 gb of ram

      ThunderDoes 8gb ram is enough for high in pretty much every game, Battlefield 4 in highest settings run at least 60 fps. I haven't tried GTA V though as the download time would be too long on my shitty 5 Mbit/s connection.
