@@meatloafmike man I got lucky, I traded an old guitar amp for a 2019 Alienware Aurora R8 with a i5-9400, 16gb of ram, a 1tb hardrive and a Radeon rx560x. It was still better than my Xbox one x performance wise out of the gate, regardless I sold my Xbox and TV for 325$, bought a 30$ 1080 p 60hz monitor off marketplace, bought some 17 dollar onn brand computer speakers from Walmart, got a hammy down keyboard and mouse from my brother's old build and then I bought a gtx 1070 8gb for 160$ and a 700 watt EVGA psu and threw those in there. Still need a SSD as load times are notoriously slow but all in all she is a beast for what she is and runs apex max settings 130 fps, destiny 3 max settings same deal, 130 fps, still testing other games as this is my first gaming PC but I'm more than happy with it. Now I just need a USB mic to talk to people and use my sundaras, better keyboard and mouse, a TB ssd , a better monitor and then eventually a better graphics card so I can use ray tracing and such but I'm extremely happy I made the switch to PC. Thing runs games solid for what it is

I will note though, that trying to build a rig like this nowadays may be very difficult thanks to scalpers and the like. Finding a gtx 1060 now ( used and new) for a good price is tough, even my 580 is apparently worth $279 brand new now at best buy even though i legit paid $75 for it less than a year ago..... that should probably give you an idea on how bad the market is right now thanks to the low supply/scalpers/miners ruining everything for all of us. I got very very lucky when i decided to build my 2nd rig a few months ago with a ryzen 3600/rx 580, 2 ssd and 16gb ram for $300. Had i waited alittle longer.... would have spent $300 on just the cpu and motherboard combo alone. Man hopefully prices come back down soon.

What a difference 3 years makes! My 10 year old Shuttle SG41J1 that I've been trying to modernize has presented some unique challenges. The original Celeron 2.5 GHz dual core was upgraded to a 3.0 GHZ Core 2 Quad, a nice boost! CPU cooling was another issue. The stock Celeron cooler could handle 65W, but the new CPU TDP was 95W. I found a Thermaltake cooler that did the job, but it was a DC (3 pin) fan and the mobo can only control PWM, so the new fan always runs at 2500 rpm (cool, but noisy). Finding a PWM fan for LGA775 AND fits mechanically with the mobo layout turned out to be not so easy. SSD upgrade - check! The SATA-II ports were good enough for a new 240 GB SSD, which boots Win10 20H2 in under 10 seconds! With only 3 SATA ports, the never-used optical drive was removed in favor of additional HDDs. So far, so good. Adding USB3 to the stock array of USB2 ports seemed in order. The problem is there's one PCIe slot and one PCI(!) slot. The PCIe is really there only for GFX (installing anything in PCIe disables the on-board graphics!). So the PCI slot is really the only option. I found one vendor that sold PCI USB3 cards, but sadly, no joy. The card would not work with the mobo. The last challenge was RAM... the mobo supports DDR2-800 and has 4GB installed in its 2 slots (not bad for 2010). It can support 8 GB, but 4GB DDR2 sticks that are not AMD are really hard to find without blowing the budget. Sigh. Without the extra DRAM, spending for a GFX upgrade was just out of the question, and the project has gone to the back burner. So, while I have a quite usable, moderately fast 10-year-old system, sadly it will never be a console-killer. I think it's time to build a new system...!

The IPC they put on that refresh chip actually put it neck-and-neck with a factory clocked 4690K, while using less power and producing much less heat (albeit it WAS a locked chip). Paired with n H97 board, GTX 970, 16GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport, and a 500GB Samsung ssd, made for nearly instant win7 boot. My preferred cards for upgrading these systems are the GTX 750 Ti, GTX 1050, and 1050 Ti (I don't recommend the GTX 1650 for anyone). These are capable cards that blow away the integrated graphics, but draw little power.
The best thing about adding SSDs is you can stick them anywhere in the case and continue to use the hard drive bays. I literally hot-glued one to the side of the case so I could continue using both hard drive bays for storage.
The other good idea for an upgrade is a memory card reader.
All this is dependent on connections available on the motherboard.

just make a mount in the bottom of the case under the gpu, then duct it to the gpu, vardboard,clue/paper will be fine and cheap as it is cheaper and quieter than a fan

Didn't hear it mentioned, or see in the transcript incase I missed it, that there are also adapters that can be used for installing a solid state drive into a hard drive bay. My acrylic case only has 5.25" drive bays, so I had to go even further, and start with adapters just to install a hard drive. Until this coming weekend, when I move everything into their new chassis, I have an adapter for an SSD, connected to an adapter for an HDD, installed in a 5.25" drive bay.

I wish I would've come across this video a few weeks ago! I just did a similar build with an old PC from my business. Same Dell case, but mine was only an i3 and only has 2 RAM slots. I already have 8GB of RAM which the documentation says is the max, but I've read that people have put 16GB in and it works, so I may do that if RAM turns out to be a bottle neck. I was in a bit naive and ordered an i7 on ebay not realizing that even though socket was the same, the Dell motherboard doesn't support Ivy Bridge, so I got an Intel DH61CR board for like $20. I did a little custom fabrication and ripped the HDD mounts out to make room for an AMD R9 390. Didn't need the HDD mounts anyways with the SDD. I had to flash the BIOS on the motherboard to the latest version to get the graphics card to work, boy that was a POS to troubleshoot. I also had to upgrade the PSU.
I read the R9 390 can get pretty hot and I didn't think the one fan on the back would be enough so I fabricated an exhaust fan mount for the side of the case and another for 2 intake fans at the front of the PC where the HDD mount was.
The only thing I bought new was the PSU and the fans. All in all I spent about $350 and this thing rips. It's quite the sleeper build and was a ton of fun building.

When you have all this mis-matched ram, does it run dual channel? I guess I would have bought 3 DDR3 X 4GB sticks, and sold or kept the 2 GB for spares.

If you ever want to upgrade for cheap, check if your motherboard is compatible with Xeons and then go look on ebay for a modded E5450 or X5450 (it has to be modded for the LGA775 socket). Then you do the BIOS update to get the extra Xeon instruction sets. You get a quad core at 3.0 GHz for really cheap, I got mine running with 8 gigs of RAM on Windows 7 and runs great.

Those quad core Ivy and Sandy Bridge chips are still rolling hard 7 years later. I have 2 Ivy systems, a 3210m laptop and a e3 1230v2 desktop. I recently checked out the i7 3740qm for my laptop and compared some passmark scores to newer chips. It is right there with chips like the 7700hq and 6700hq. I can see those Ivy and Sandy chips lasting several more years if all you are doing is 1080p 60 gaming. Just keep throwing new mid range GPUs in the PCIe slot and you are set.

Well, adding a GPU to second hand business PC for gaming was something I used to do roughly 7 or 8 years ago. It was a HP DC7800 SFF and an AMD card. I could not recall what exactly was the card but it had to be something low profile. Heck I even bought an intel SSD which was fairly expensive then and loaded Ubuntu on it (cos Windows XP doesn't work well with SSDs). But I also had to keep the original copy of XP on HDD for playing games. The PC's cpu was boasting with its 1333FSB being the top of the line of 65nm Core 2 Duo's. You can always trust in these business desktops, they are really solid built.

it was close to this - i5 3570k, 8gigs ram, but it had 660ti. the ti went down last year i believe, so i changed it with 1060, and recently i got another 4 gigs with the same speed from another pc from my brother in law. so it now have 12 gigs.

Vs the Intel HD 4000, the 570 is a beast GPU. Back in 2012, the HD 4000 was shit and today it is virtually useless for gaming. I don't even think it supports DX11 games let alone 12. The 570 by comparison to 2012 GPUs would have been one of the best single GPU cards out right up there with the OG Titan.
