Finally! An answer that makes sense to the novice! (at least to one who wants to learn) What I got was Core i3 was your basic model with limited options, low buck and best gas mileage. Core i5 is a has a more luxuries right from the factory, generally handles better on the information freeway, has a turbo added on for a burst of speed if you need to crunch some big numbers and can be ordered with a bunch of extras that will up the price. Core i7 is the big engine that was imagined for use on the German Autobahn. Even in its basic configuration it is a power hungry beast and is always looking at you to add more ways to try and reach that imaginary top speed of the internet highway! In business mode it will go though a battery in an 65 minutes all the while urging you to check out the gamer on that site that is kicking ass now that you left at 4:30 am this morning! 😂😂
i9 introduced...heads roll i7 no longer has hyperthreading...arms go up AMD is the new market leader...World cheers in competitive pricing wars only to find out that Intel has shit the bed and can't even compete ...
One thing worth noting is desktop processors are significantly more faster than equivalent laptop versions. Infact my i3 9100f benchmarks about 20% better than the lastest i7-10510U which is Found in Many laptops.
Pkkumarcool Most games cant even use all the cores...i mean battlefield 3 can only use 2 physical cores... so 2 turbo boosted i7 cores generally performs better than two i5 cores. (same generation, unless you are playing minesweeper...)
***** i am talking about in budget off course more costly things which perform better but i3+amd card is too goo for awesome experience and is better than amd cpu+amd gfx card in same price
It's amazing how relevant this still is. I was on a discord call with a friend trying to explain the difference between "Core i5/7/9" and got into the weeds about ipc and how a newer i3 can be faster than an i5, etc. Here because they were running a 75500U. I got tired and just gave her this video to watch :D
Right. It is weird that you'll buy an it because people say those are better but then someone with a new i3 is having a better user experience THEN they say oh it's because your it is an older gen than the i3 and you're like wtf there's generations I gotta consider as well!!!
So this is why when I was doing research for building a computer the core i3 that was cheaper also had better FPS. But then again having higher frames per second doesn’t mean the rest of the things won’t be slow.
Finally someone who can do the proper helium inhalation :D! So sick of people that only take a tiny, tiny breath and then even pretend that it's actually enough to affect their voice so much, when it's clearly not.
Syph1l1S Surely, one isn't supposed to constantly inhale it. 1 full inhalation isn't going to kill you. If that kid died from it, he must have been sucking on it constantly without getting any air.

Well, there is just so much more that goes into CPU performance beyond clock speed (cache lines, speed & size, chipset, bus width, etc. etc.). I'm really not sure there is a naming convention one could draw up that would solve this problem.
Fun and sad to see that intel's product naming has gotten no better in the 6 1/2 years since this was posted. This was before i9 CPUs, not to mention the "k" and "F" variants we now have only adding to the craziness.
@@undercover549 he said he hates intel because they set artificial drawbacks, i3 and i5 no longer support ram faster than 2666 without a z board, who buys an expensive z board with a cheap i3 i5, especially that even k chips have no room for extra overclocking, they are pushed to the limits from the factory, so they had to give a reason to buy such a board

My day started off good.. I remembered I need a new computer. I know nothing about computers. Started researching. At first I was looking at gaming PC vs regular PC. Discovered the difference between CPU and GPU, but someone said gaming PC has less RAM. I google RAM. Then I google how data is actually stored..I mean.. it's not happening magically. There must be physical microscopic tangible processes going on. I start reading about HDD vs SSD. I read about the polarization of electrical binary signals onto a conductive grain magnetized substrate. Wtf. I am just the guy who sweeps leaves off of the street. Now I am delving into the finer points of computer science. I just want to buy a PC dammit. This has been a very confusing day for old Henry... peace out ma niggas.. This is your boy, good old Henry McHapless signing off.
Dude im not good in theory like you...i just took my old pc disassembled the crap out of it and learned everything i needed in pretty much an afternoon :D its not very difficult but the compatibility issues between motherboard and cpu and ddr rams and whateverthefucktheycallthem really gave me a headache at the beggining too
Aphelion Eye Omg bro same here lmao. I just wanted a laptop for gaming. Didn't know the difference between a gaming laptop and regular laptop. So here I am trying to teach myself about computers learning about hard drives, ram, cpu, and all that shit lmao
In the Single Core era, it took the birth of the Dual Core era for Intel to realize that mHz aren't everything. Now, long into the Infinity Core Era, AMD needs to learn the same thing about core counts.
No i3s for me. I'm never putting an i3 in my PC, and not an AMD either. I may put an i5 in there, but whenever I could, I'd put an i7 or even Xeon in there.
Right now, 10th gen i3 is faster if not as fast as an i7 released in the year Linus made this video. Wow, what a jump. Thanks to AMD, intel finally started giving as Quadro core i3s with even hyperthreading.
Same I have 10th gen i3 but the problem I have is my 4gb ram memory and I don't have a cooler for my laptop, I was playing Valorant then the next thing is that my ram is corrupted, I didn't knew this I'm new at using laptop and didn't knew I need a cooler and because of my stock ram. This is my first I own a laptop, I was playing valorant the next thing happened was my game crush then all apps disappeared and some memo diagnostic tool then fixed but my memory now probably has complications that's something I didn't knew since I'm new of having laptop, didn't knew that I really need a cooler and at least 8 or more ram for Valo.
When I buy laptops, I find that the "sweet spot" for optimal performance without breaking the budget is to upgrade to Core i7 and 16GB RAM. That combination will be able to handle just about everything without going overboard. As for storage, 256GB is plenty for most people so that will keep the final price down. I don't see spending an extra few hundred dollars to expand to 516GB is worth it and 1TB will probably never get used. If you do get 256GB storage, every six months or so you could go into your files and trash things you don't want to keep. You'd be surprised how much junk piles up over the months. Core i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB storage. It's a great combination.
-Balloons are filled with Helium -Helium is bad for your lungs -Don't do helium... It is bad! *Remember kids, Balloons are fun to play with, not to inhale!*
Da Ya The helium probably helps them hold their breath longer. Inhaling helium only though is dangerous, because helium contains no oxygen. Therefore killing your brain cells and other things.
Hoover my question was pretty rhetorical, I am a certified commercial diver. As such you replace oxygen with helium and or nitrogen at depth. If you were to breath normal % of oxygen at depth you would get brain damage from oxygen toxcicity (to much oxygen). Helium is lighter than air so unless you are in a room with positive pressure ventilation forcing helium into the room you wont die because if you fall to the gound, you'd be breathing air again. . .
I appreciate the information you condensed and presented quickly. That is a skill! After trying to watch a dozen videos in an effort to find the perfect laptop for my daughter this Christmas, YOU ACTUALLY HELPED! Thanks!
An i3 is like a four cylinder engine. It's nothing fancy, but it's efficient and will get the job done. An i5 is like a V6. It's a good middle ground between power and efficiency. An i7 is like a baseline V8, lots of power, but not as efficient. A core i7 Extreme is like a Mustang GT or Camaro SS. You get it because you want the power just for the fun of it.
You are definitely one of the best people who can be a journalist or a shopkeeper or a spammer. Your videos are such amazing! Thanks a lot for the work!
There are many core i5 that perform better benchmarks than core i7. I wish this video would go into the technical aspects of the architecture of each to better understand why one chip might or might not be better, other than just the name of it
@nari trovi 1) dont buy a celeron 2) pick a laptop that has good battery life ie over 10 hrs 3) macbook m1 or m2 4) dont buy a gaming laptop as their GPU will use battery and most wont last more than 2 hrs. 5) If battery says 4 hrs take that and divide by 2 as most laptop battery estimates are based on mixed use with more downtime than uptime 6) if you take alot of notes almost any cheap laptop with more than 10 hrs battery is good unless your class last longer than 10 hrs total

Yeah that's basically still the truth, but also keep in mind that this video is many years old now.

I love these prehistoric video, explain for the future generations what was an extinted Intel cpu..
Extinted?
One thing worth noting is desktop processors are significantly more faster than equivalent laptop versions. Infact my i3 9100f benchmarks about 20% better than the lastest i7-10510U which is Found in Many laptops.
So.... just like before. The names only exists to fuck with uninformed customers, while the rest uses them only to dig up the specs.
The lesson here is ...... Get fucking informed !! and save money !
I wish these names were bigger, to include the specs in them.
my understanding of intel cpus up to watching this video are:
i3 = underpowered
i5 = value for money
i7 = overpriced
i7's are nice for overclocking however :)
Core i7 may cost a lot, but in the end it's worth it.
Of course it depends on what your doing on the computer.
Tic para Todos br?
For gaming this is true, for streaming, recording, video and audio editing, you couldn't be more wrong
***** Don't play CS:GO dude. Although I am wishing i bought an i7 now as im starting to use my pc for work a lot more and need good processing speed
i3 ----> desktop
i5----->gaming
i7----->workstation
you.... should watch the video...
I'd easily recommend an i7 4770K for gaming.
i3 is definately for gaming too
Pkkumarcool Most games cant even use all the cores...i mean battlefield 3 can only use 2 physical cores... so 2 turbo boosted i7 cores generally performs better than two i5 cores.
Edit: now she's even more confused.. thanks, Linus LUL
Right. It is weird that you'll buy an it because people say those are better but then someone with a new i3 is having a better user experience THEN they say oh it's because your it is an older gen than the i3 and you're like wtf there's generations I gotta consider as well!!!
That time when you get a linus tech ad on a linus tech video: stonks 📈
So this is why when I was doing research for building a computer the core i3 that was cheaper also had better FPS. But then again having higher frames per second doesn’t mean the rest of the things won’t be slow.

You can't but I stil recommend that chip because it's clocked a lot higher, and is a lot cooler and it does not cost that much more

***** The Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 is a really fine Micro ATX board for 120 dollars, pair it with i5 4690K for ultimate overclocking destruction
Well, there is just so much more that goes into CPU performance beyond clock speed (cache lines, speed & size, chipset, bus width, etc. etc.). I'm really not sure there is a naming convention one could draw up that would solve this problem.
This is the take IMO.
Never fails when watching videos on computers, walk away more confused than before I saw the video.

Fun and sad to see that intel's product naming has gotten no better in the 6 1/2 years since this was posted. This was before i9 CPUs, not to mention the "k" and "F" variants we now have only adding to the craziness.
K = overclockable F = no integrated graphics
K and F are pretty straightforward, it's the skew number and other letters that are confusing.

No i3s for me. I'm never putting an i3 in my PC, and not an AMD either. I may put an i5 in there, but whenever I could, I'd put an i7 or even Xeon in there.
Aidan Sweeney and no celeron.
Aidan Sweeney LOL celeron is nothing. I only mentioned it because he didn't mention it in this video. Celeron is slower than any laptop i3
TabalugaDragon
Not true.. for example i3 330m is slower than a Celeron g1610..
Kyal McCabe yeah... and only over 3 years release time difference....
I meant within a generation.
Right now, 10th gen i3 is faster if not as fast as an i7 released in the year Linus made this video. Wow, what a jump. Thanks to AMD, intel finally started giving as Quadro core i3s with even hyperthreading.
Yeah, I have 10th gen i3. It's good honestly.
Ouf, even few years ago i3 had some good stuff! I can't imagine what out there now :o Im not as updated as before.
same performance as a i7 6700k
Just bought one recently, it is better than the i5-7400 that I once have before the upgrade.

-Helium is bad for your lungs
-Don't do helium... It is bad!
*Remember kids, Balloons are fun to play with, not to inhale!*
no
So why do divers breath helox (helium + oxygen) at deep depths then? Helium is inert in your lungs just like nitrogen.
Helium is lighter than air so unless you are in a room with positive pressure ventilation forcing helium into the room you wont die because if you fall to the gound, you'd be breathing air again. . .

There are many core i5 that perform better benchmarks than core i7. I wish this video would go into the technical aspects of the architecture of each to better understand why one chip might or might not be better, other than just the name of it
This is supposed to be a fast "talk to me like I'm 5" explanation, not an in-depth explanation
please teach me a little about this, i need a laptop as im heading into college and im a noob
@nari trovi
1) dont buy a celeron
2) pick a laptop that has good battery life ie over 10 hrs
3) macbook m1 or m2
4) dont buy a gaming laptop as their GPU will use battery and most wont last more than 2 hrs.
5) If battery says 4 hrs take that and divide by 2 as most laptop battery estimates are based on mixed use with more downtime than uptime
6) if you take alot of notes almost any cheap laptop with more than 10 hrs battery is good unless your class last longer than 10 hrs total
it's literally because of generation. a core i3 11th gen beat core i7 1st gen by a large margin
