- The new trailer for Nosferatu just dropped, and it seemingly wants to make vampires scary again - and in order to do so, it had to remake one of the greatest movies of all time, the original Nosferatu from more than one century ago!
Let’s see why this might work, and why Nosferatu is such a big deal in the first place!

I want vampires to be evil monsters to be destroyed by heroes being the norm again.
I dont know. I would rather they were regal, and elegant like Dracula in the novel. And his feeding on the women obviously sexual. I dont think the vampire should be just a zombie. Dracula was proud nobleman. Sometimes he looked horrible, sometimes mysterious, sometimes he looked attractive., but always he looked extra. he isnt just some rotting corpse. We have zombies already.

Dafoe remains the first and so far only actor to be nominated for an Oscar for playing a vampire. He was so good in “Shadow of the Vampire”.
He sure was, fun fact his performance actually got him the part of Green Goblin in the Sam Rami Spider-Man Trilogy.
Funny thing is that over half of the movies that the Oscars tout as worthy of adoration soon lapse into obscurity, while horror movies that the Academy pretty consistently ignore, tend to endure. Shadow of the Vampire falls into the former category -- I don't think it did big business, and I can't recall the last time I even saw it mentioned.
Yes Defoe was so very good in that film, I loved how it played fast and lose with the idea of Nosferatu and the thier Film crew themselves were dealing with the real thing, but trying to use him in their own Fictional movie, that was a nice twist I thought.
Ive never seen that. I must look for it.
My favourite interpretation of vampires was in the Legacy of Kain series. In it vampires tended to be beautiful and elegant at first, but as they become older they start turning more monstrous, such as growing claws and fingers fusing together and wings, gills and becoming more batlike.
Fantastic series, the first two just got a compilation release on Evercade. Hopefully the series will get taken up by serious developers who abhor the ‘modern audience’.
A lot of lore established in that series. Very unique.
A shame that it was dormant for so long. I’m very surprised the entire Blood Omen/LoK series hasn’t been revisited.
HD releases coming along, so that’s a plus.
@@maceelliott3150 Indeed, but for some reason they felt the need to change the gender of certain statues and artwork to male. Very strange, feels like modern devs hate women. 🤔
I’ve heard nothing but good things from Legacy of Kain.
I'm really looking forward to this version of Nosferatu. this also make me re-watch Shadow of the Vampire. So it's great that Dafoe is in both movie.
Funny enough I rewatched Shadow of the Vampire yesterday and I will certainly do so again at least twice the remainder of the year.
Have you seen Nosferatu the Vampyre by chance? It was the first Nosferaru remake. Klaus Kinsky plays the vampire - and it was directed by Werner Herzog. It's very good.
Three of my favorite movies!
@@MattPurvis-gt3wwYes I have and I own it on DVD
I have faith in Robert Eggers, he's going to knock it out of the park.
🚫
No matter if you prefer a Dracula - like interpretation or one like Nosferatu, Vampires should at least be scary, which they haven't been in a while. I really like the trailer, looking forward to the movie.
I'll believe it when it's out and people can tell me it's good. I won't have any expectations for anything in 2024.
💯
If it was made by anyone other than Robert Eggers, I'd be right there with you, but he has made only incredible movies, so I'm finally looking forward to a new movie.

I wish I could believe it from the get go as well. Even the established directors are making films that are as self indulgent as they are forgettable.
In the best case scenario, I'm going to be proven wrong and this will be a remake that is truly good. A miracle indeed.
Sick of remakes.
On Halloween I will be watching the original 1922 version followed by Shadow of the Vampire!
Everything is a remake of something. I hope they will be writing about Dracula, and vampires for centuries to come.
Looking forward your new channel.
7:50 That's music to my ears. No matter which side is winning, I'm sick and tired of the culture wars. For you to make a channel that focuses on classics with no politics attached, is the best move ever! Consider me subscribed.
As a movie buff since I was a kid I cannot WAIT for the new channel to get started. 😊
I completely agree, Andre. A good dose of real cinema is desperately needed. Can’t wait for the new channel and full retrospective!🍻
Hopefully, this movie won't go woke like LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER. There were no black Russian sailors on the Demeter or black British doctors.
I was more disappointed that Last Voyage of the Demeter was more a monster film than a Dracula one.
Voyage of Demeter would have been way better off without the "good at everything" black guy.
Let it not be The Crow remake ...
Unlikely given the track record of the director.
wow. I used to have DVDs of Metropolis as well as a box set containing Nosferatu, Der Golem and The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari back in the day. Interesting films all, even 90+ years on. Looking forward to it.
A man of taste I see
I don't expect to see it myself, but if seeing movie from the earliest days of cinema being remade certainly beats seeing remakes of movies made in our lifetimes.
That new channel looks great. May the algorithm be with you.
Fingers crossed!
Technically it's a remake of a remake since Werner Herzog already remade Nosferatu in the 1970s...
Bram Stoker's widow actually sued the filmmakers of Nosferatu and because she won all copies of the movie had to be destroyed but years later a copy was found
Alvin Grau truly believed in real vampires and included many of his occult beliefs about them in Nosferatu. Thus, his interpretation of the vampire myth actually contains elements of genuine folklore, although he took his liberties. For example, according to most folklore, vampires are not destroyed by sunlight, they just lose most of their powers. However, the abilities of turning invisible, shapeshift and unleash an epidemic, as count Orlok does in the movie, are really present in the vampire folklore. The film also contains imaginery that inspired movies like Fright Night and Bram Stoker's Dracula.
I am so excited to see this version of Nosferatu. Yesterday I watched the Herzog remake and Shadow of the Vampire. Nosferatu is the first silent movie I ever watched in it's entirety and I know how fantastic a Filmmaker Robert Eggers is. So seeing this in theaters is really special for me.
Can not wait to see your new channel.

Now it will be seven years until a literary offspring of Count Dracula, The Shadow, who, in turn, is the direct ancestor of Batman, enters the public domain.
And in the grand scheme of things Batman is on the verge of entering the Public Domain as well.
I saw the classic version of Nosferatu at a public library screening in the fall of 2021.
Before then I saw the "Type O Negative version" with the David Carradine intro.
It was in a three movie collection that included House On Haunted Hill and Night Of The Living Dead; Trio Of Terror.
So far the "TON" is my favorite version, it might change after seeing the ME version.
According to the DVD cardboard cover that came with the plastic case, the actor who played Nosferatu never blinked during his entire screentime.
Oh God, not Lily Rose Depp again. Has she been in a single good movie?
I'd ask the same of Skarsgard...
Not that I don't agree, mind you; the girl doesn't want to ride on Daddy's coattails, but she is, and she's got none of his talent, IMHO.
@@DannyGraves1775 Though, I have seen my fair share of examples where casting I didn't think would work actually does under the right direction/director. Given this is Eggers, I'm willing to see if he'll be able to work some magic, at least.
Super looking forward to the Classics & Retrospectives channel
Us too!
Our society made human offering a top priority in the last century. From wars to getting those who aren't even born.
The director of Nosferatu got his religious desire.
So looking forward to this. I’ve enjoyed the original and the 70’s remake. This looks so good. I hope it lives up to the hype.
I thought Anya Taylor-Joy is in this, who would probably make a great titular character with a shaven head, fangs and some Spock ears.
I think she would've more likely been in Lily-Rose Depp's role.
Im so over her.
Lol, how did you reach that conclusion? She was never meant to play Nosferatu/Count Orlok. She was always meant to play Helen Hutter, the female lead. She had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts so Lily-Rose Depp took over. I think this is a good choice. Anya has become so overexposed in Hollywood lately while Lily-Rose (who is a good actress) hasn’t had much luck with her roles. This will give her s chance to show off her acting skills.
@@heimdal8 "Would", my man, "would". I never said she was playing the vampire. I was talking about her weird face, especially after the rumored buccal fat removal.
I watched the original Nosferatu recently and it was pretty good.

Youre welcome :P
I don’t love vampire films but I’ll support this so we can start seeing real movies against and not MCU garbage.
I came about the 1922 version 🔙 in my JHS years. I was an advent reader just shortly after overcoming a deficit in expression verbatim, as a result of my lack of reading comprehension. As a kid who watched all the Universal's horror cycle films, i became familiar say with "Dracula". I then read the 📚, by Bram (Abraham) Stoker. PBS channel 13, had silent films on Sunday nights, my very first experience was 1925 "phantom of the opera", i was drawn into the film as i watched the ballerina's fluttering about, and then the camera focused on below the catacombs of the opera house, where Lon Chaney was playing the organ 🎹, and Mary philbon creepily removed the mask, and horror the face of the phantom, ghoulishly pronounced. His face was inspired in the art 🎨 🎭 department by real life heroes that lived to tell of their experience from WWI 1914-1918 disfigured features. 🔙 To The film, the pantomime the cinematography was frenetically pacing into the narrative of the film. I became anamored of the movie making proces. So then came "Nosferatu", and when the rats appeared on the ship with plaques and the town to which the ship landed, was all death pestilence and terror of this unknown pandemic. To us the viewers we were given carte blanch to the narrative as we witnessed the horror of the anemic creature who resembled a thin tall gaut looking rat. Omgoogins i was frightened as a kid. And so when i read many of the 📚 of the horror history of the movies, it not only educated me as to the director (WF Murnau) and the expressionistic format of the German innovation in Art from 1919 "the cabinet of Dr. Caligari", painted backdrops, visuals of an unchanting but provative world, i was mesmerized. And so i look forward to the restored version of your channels presentation, preserving the filmakers original recording, i can't wait. P.s. the first version i viewed was with what they called a rabbit 🐰 TV 📺 antenna 📡, and the films were damaged. So seeing the 🎥 clear, version will be great, looking forward ⏩ to seeing. ✍️🌌🕸️🕷️.
I came about the 1922 version when I was 16.
Looking for4ward to the new channel; I love old movies and it would be nice to focus on positives instead of everything negative in the world. Great video
What us them music you use for the trailer of the retrospective?

And of course, waiting for the remake at the end of the year.
I have little confidence in the dude playing Orlok. He always looks pretty goofy.
Thanks for posting guys.
For me, the greatest vampire movie ever was The Shadow of the Vampire. Very underrated I feel.
Excellent vid. I'll be watching the new channel sounds like my cup of tea.I bought Nosferatu on doofder back in the 90's.
Robert Eggers made one very good movie "The Witch". He's been on a downward spiral since then by emphasising style over substance. This does not bode well for Nosferatu.
if you think the lighthouse was style over substance, i think you might want to rewatch it 😅
One of the original Nosferatu DVDs I have has a very interesting video essay on how several themes of the movie are portrayed using camera angles and framing, but it's very funny to me how the narrator only says it as "NosferatOO". The best version IMO is the Criterion version, with the incredible remastering of the original, colored negatives using the usual color coding of silent movies (which were never screened on black and white), (they claim) original German title cards, and two very good soundtracks. Also, a booklet with lots of information and another excellent video essay. And no "NosferatOO". 😆
The best version is definitely the Kino Lorber Version. I think you might have confused Criterion with Kino Lorber.
I am so incredibly down for this idea!
I can't wait. This is going to be so good.
I might, go and see the movie, but I will see the retrospective. The Midnight's Edge retrospective , is a "hell yeah" from me

Good luck with this new project of yours.
I'm way more excited about your remix than the new film. We had a beautiful remake in 1979. Call it gatekeeping, however, I don't think something so beautiful should be made palatable for the masses.
Man, l don't know. This movie didn't need a remake.
Amazing news, i am looking forward for retrospectives on the new channel. Keep up the good work guys.
What's opera song at the end of video? I like it.
That's from the original score for "Nosferatu: The Midnight's Edge Experience"
You got _at least_ two subs, ie. mine, and an expectant fan out of this video.
You should do a Bergman movie
A remake of an older film is OK if done well. Look at how many different versions of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and Wolfman there are.
I think Nosferatu will be one of the rare films to have multiple great remakes.
Thank you gentlemen.

Lets wait until the woke mesage goes away before we try to make anything good.
I'm also a fan of the Werner Herzog version, Klaus Kinski is effective as the Vampire.
Holding my breath for the next remake in 2031.
I was curious to learn, why modern audiences NEED the Nosferatu remake. I was less curious about a 12 minute ad for your channel.

Not all remakes are bad. My favorite horror film of all time is a remake; John Carpenter’s The Thing. There is also, The Blob (1988), The Fly (1986), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), The Mummy (1999), 12 Monkeys (1995), Dune (2021) (but I still enjoy the Lynch version too), The Color Out of Space (2019) (many previous adaptations of that story), just to name a few of my personal favorites (your mileage may vary).
Amen. More please!
Looking forward to it.
This is incredible!

It seems our world is so much smaller than when "Occultist" was apparently a perfectly reasonable career choice.
Despite being a massive horror fan i never watched nosferatu because its so old and my general dislike of vampires. But i will definitely give this new version a chance! Maybe this will be like the thing of 1983. That was also a remake of a much older version but blew the original out of the water in every way!
In this film making climate? I say: HOW ABOUT NO!
We had a Nosferatu remake in the 70s. It's actually a very good movie too.
That it is, but one you need to be in the right mood to fully appericate. Because it is very slow paced.
This is an interesting case like with King Kong 2005, the Fly 1986, the wolfman 2010. So why does these remakes become the exception than the rule
Can't wait.
Are we sure the producer of Nosferatu didn't also build a high rise in New York that the Ghostbusters had to deal with in the 80s???
No, lol
No.......we don't need more blood sucker's
We need a Cannonball Run........
We need New High School movies.....
We need a Team Sport movie.....
Maybe a CHRISTINE movie....
Double-bill with Shadow of the Vampire FTW
We need a remake of the original Nosferatu by Murnau. Still the best.
I definitely think this film needed to be scary but also needs the tone it's taking as pretty every horror film I've seen this year and last year no matter the subject failed to do one and that's scare the audience. Even The Friday the 13th ripoff In A Violent Nature failed to do that while kills were gruesome because we never left our killer you never had even simply jump scares that a Jason or Michael Myers could give you. All horror films I saw over the last two years the one that got the best reaction for scares was a screening of Jaws a several decades old film otherwise nothing came close with exception of Alien Romulus. So given who's making Nosferatu and comparing it to say The Northman or Lighthouse we at least know audiences will be pushed now let's see if it's into true terror.
Oh, no. This is a story about Sava Savanović. This is so embarasing for me because I'm from that country and for us it's just a stupid myth. Knowing that a story from a poor serbian man had inspired someone to make Dracula makes me blush.
It could be worse
Oooh! Can't wait for that deep dive to drop!
