I know this harks back to Murnau's original, but given the characters and locations in that film were only so named in a flimsy attempt to avoid legal action from Bram Stoker's estate, I think Eggers should have just used the characters from the Dracula story...this _is_ Dracula by another name after all....
@@yootchoobe I suppose he could have just altered the story of Dracula to his needs like everyone else has done in recent times. But something about Nosferatu has a mysterious veil to it I think. This story hasn't been tampered with like Dracula, although it was originally a copy of Dracula 🤣
Well Dude, I must say I was absolutely knocked out by the trailer as well. "dripping with atmosphere" might be a well worn cliche, but let's face it, it fits. The attention to period detail in The Witch, even in the dialogue made it such a stand out. You just knew a very special writer/director had arrived in Eggers. Coppola, another director of note of course, caused quite a stir when he announced he was taking on Bram Stoker's novel, but I can't help but think his film will look like a Disney movie compared to Nosferatu. It does look beautiful, as you would expect from Eggers, but, am I the only one who was a little disappointed by this trailer? If you think back to just how differently paced and unusual the trailers for The Witch were, how much they set up a slow, creeping, feeling of dread...then how unusually choppy and stark The Lighthouse trailers were.... this Nosferatu trailer has a very standard Hollywood 'Horror Movie' trailer pacing, complete with sudden thuds on the soundtrack and the promise of lots of Jump Scares. I hope I'm wrong, he's such an individual voice, but it seems like he's starting to conform to The Hollywood playbook with this one. Fingers tightly crossed!
I think a part of that could be just based on how well known this story is. They could have made things more vague I guess but I do get what you mean. I can't believe this will be a straight up adaption, even though the trailer doesn't offer any evidence to think otherwise of course. @@ENTERTAINtheDUDE The story of Dracula is for me in some way timeless. It is a rich fairytaile which never is getting out of fashion, since there can be focused on so many aspects. Unfortunately, I told my brother about this movie and instead of getting excited, he just said: "Didn't they already make that?" He was talking about the last voyage of the demeter. I hate that this film might get confused with that dreck.
@@Wyrmwould haha! This is the problem with the genre of mythology inspired by the pure source of the original stories. The wolves are actually most interesting to me. Combined with Eggers famous research abilities im wondering if he will utilize some of the many wolf scenes in the OG Dracula work that havent been used that much. Will he go back to when it was in play form? Beyond that i expect unsettlingly accurate to regional-coresponding folklore vampire(s), and consideration to every Nosferatu film (including SotV), as well as dense deconstruction of the original work. This is Egger's passion project. He bled to make this movie.

I don't really know what I am saying but it's so hard to articulate the feelings I am experiencing when I cover this film. I means...the union of Orlok and Ellen is supposed to be repulsive, not romantic or erotic. It's probably cinema's first depiction of the bestiality fetish and a "hate-fxxx" in every way possible.
@@milanunosson9355 something that explores a visceral aspect to the metamorphosis like in American Werewolf in London but with a heavily ground dramatic vibe that also explorers family and drama without all the clichés. As long as it holds to grounded values we can relate to and also has shocking elements that scare us without being typical of your usual jump scares etc then I'm happy. I just want it to be scary without going too far into silly territory 👍
I have a feeling unlike Coppolas Dracula, and similar to Murnau's original, the protagonists will use less overtly Christian means to defeat Orlok. Oh well Hopkins' standoff with Oldman's Dracula is hard to beat in that regard anyway.
I believe sunlight was the method of killing it originally but how much Eggers will stick to the beaten path is unknown. I'm less keen about crosses and garlic hehe! But if he explores deeper into folklore than your average vampire film then it has promised. The talk of it being very scary excites me as well. I'll try to maintain my hype for obvious reasons 😉
Eh...depends what you define as overtly christian means. As far as I can tell (read an earlier draft of Eggers' script from 2016), it ends like the original movie. Spoiler! Ellen does "the deed" with Orlok and the vampire forgets the morning's cock crow. He dies due to the sunlight. The only difference is that the male characters get to do something while they remained passive in the original movie.
Even though Eggers did masterful work with Anya (and I'd love to see her as my first choice in this role, given that it's his), and even though I'm sadly not very impressed with the majority of Dafoe's work (an unpopular opinion, but one which I _very_ easily stand by, aside from Platoon, To Live & Die in LA, The Lighthouse, Shadow of the Vampire, and ~2 others over his _entire life's_ filmography) - I'll willingly trust _his_ willingness to work with Lily here, until demonstrated otherwise. (!!) The man has SOOO earned that presumption of competence in his craft. 👍 So far, he's the goddamn f'ing bee's knees.

Imo, no vampire movie since then (at least a Dracula-inspired one) has been able to capture the tale to a level of quality that that film did. THIS one looks great though and looks like it’s going to do just that.
@@4G63Tx yeah, that movie really complimented Keanu's acting style, weirdly enough. The whole film had a dreamy brilliance to it and Gary's performance was just meant to be. I suppose the biggest difference will be that perhaps Nosferatu may not feel like a lengthy epic as Dracula was and less romanticism possibly. Either way, I'm equally excited to see if it affects me with scares and story 👍
I loved (still love) Bram Stoker's Dracula when I first saw it, it is still one of my favourite films and I watch it periodically I am looking forward to this
@@utopia5534 for me, one of my safe place movies that I have to watch every year is The Thing 🍿. Weirdly, it's one of those films that makes me feel warm and cosy to watch, almost like returning home again, haha!
I imagine if anyone could do a proper remake of 'Nosferatu', it's most likely Robert Eggers; but, I'm not certain that after Werner Herzog's incredible 1979 version, a new one is needed. Just my opinion...
@@curiousworld7912 I would argue it is needed only in its less comedic value perhaps. We need a true dark telling of a gothic horror, away from the modern takes etc
@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE I'm not sure I caught any comedy in Herzog's version. It's as dark, gothic, and horrific as such a story calls for. And, Herzog is a master at 'mood'.
@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE You have seen the film? You were talking about opening scenes after all... The 'comedic' elements in Herthogs 'Nosferatu' such as the Renfield character are akin to the dark humour of that era... 'Punch and Judy' shows, etc, and only add to the unsettling atmosphere of the whole work. Disappointed you didn't reference Hertzogs work in this, but thanks anyway.
@@ianwhite6034 I mainly tried to stay on point with exploring the trailer whilst only referencing the other films. Otherwise I'd worry people would switch off 😉. Perhaps I'll do another video detailing what was so inspiring about the original one day.
You should try to see the silent original as well.
the town is the fictional Wisborg, because it has details of real Lübeck, and Wisborg was filmed in Lübeck. Again, the castle is really Hunedoara castle, in modern day Romania, in the outskirts of Transilvania, where real Vlad III the Impaler once was held prisoner.
@@carbo73 good to know, thx. It's going to be one hell of an attractive movie 👍
With a December 25th release date, it's nice to know that we will have in cinemas, a feel good Christmas movie the whole family will enjoy. Lol.
Glad you are on board with this adaption of Nosferatu Mark. I try not to hype up commercial stuff too much 😉 but these rare events always impress me and I cannot go down the rabbit for no reason unless it doesn't resonate with me so much. Thanks for your continuous support buddy

Looks good. It's such a great story that I am hoping for the best.
@@markbeck8384 it's always an expensive from Eggers so hopefully this will be his masterpiece 🤞
But even if his fourth film is more typical than his others, I'm hoping it will be as creepy as The Witch whilst showing so much more of the protagonist, which we never had in The Witch 🤞🤞
@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE Yes, I'll definitely be counting down the nights til it's released and hoping the trailer "Vibe" I got was wrong!

@@epiphany7189 perfect to hear this. I really didn't have any doubts as we got so close to release. Sadly, in the UK, we have to wait until new year's day onwards for it to release 😞
I would also love a Nosferatu version from Guillermo Del Toro. But I will definetely watch this one too.
They would be drastically different but fun to imagine how. Both directors are able to do horror well but obviously Del Toro has vastly more experience in bringing my monsters to life. Then again, not all of his creations would suit Nosferatu 🤔
@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE The story of Dracula is for me in some way timeless. It is a rich fairytaile which never is getting out of fashion, since there can be focused on so many aspects. That's also the reason I think that nearly every iconic horrormoviemaker should give a Dracula or Nosferatu version on his or her own. It has been the case in the past and I always wondered if Christopher Lee would live the day to day. How nice could he have been in todays movies with all the technical effects which are possible in this time, well we will never know 😉

Not to discount this film version. However, the version by Werner Herzog with Klaus Kinski was brilliant in the late 1970's. This version looks pretty good bringing back a gothic horror.
@@artSFCA yeah, that version was great for what it was but I am hoping for a truly realistic period piece gothic horror with this one.

@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE I might have gone too far by calling it dreck. The movie looked great. I loved the setting of the ship at sea. But I despised how the film presented Dracula as just a silent movie monster. It felt more like a remake of Alien on a sailing ship instead of a spaceship.

He bled to make this movie.
yeah, I feel he is tapping into something that is crucial right? Layers of nature and mysticism that conjure up feelings of primal terror in us. I don't really know what I am saying but it's so hard to articulate the feelings I am experiencing when I cover this film. We've seen many interpretations of these symbiotic relationships between fictional creatures and natural predators that there has to be some unifying factor here. All in all , I am just freaking excited to see what he leaves to the imagination in this film, that's what counts...
