Also convicted of drug trafficking internationally. Interesting fella, not thattt long or complicated of a story so perhaps not to your taste but just wanted to suggest it lol Edit: Okay so my brain is properly calibrated and I now have some more... interesting... events I'd like to mention. In the 1980s during Bouterse's first dictatorship, there were several coup attempts against him. One of them was done by a very small group of people. Three people led the coup. They hijacked a tank, yes a singular tank, and tried to depose Bouterse with again, a singular tank. The funny part is that the only reason that this coup attempt failed was because one of the three people defected and quite literally, I am not making this up, drove the tank straight to a pro-Bouterse military base and handed it over. Quite the silly event if you ask me. I'm also pretty sure that the aforementioned "relatively small mass execution" that I mentioned earlier came as a direct consequence of this, in which people with Surinames, Dutch, and various Caribbean nationalities were executed, some personally by the guy himself. This caused international and domestic outrage and would be one of the primary factors in his deposing. Moving on, in the 1990s the guy would, I am not exaggerating in the slightest bit, call the president and dismiss the government. During the transition to democracy the deal that was made was that the civilians would get back control of civilian affairs while he would remain commander in chief of the military. This was, as the coup displayed, quite the brilliant idea. He would remain dictator for about half a year I think before he had to resign after strikes (he did appoint a figurehead to rule for him, but he was quite clearly a puppet to Bouterse). Finally, in the 2010s and 2020s, as he made his presidential debut (leading the country straight into its greatest financial crisis in decades and bringing it up to third place in highest inflation rates across the world between 2015-2016), the judiciary was like "guys... he literally executed fifteen people without cause and did all those other things..." and promptly started a trial against him. The Surinames version of the Supreme Court would handle this case. Now its quite important to mention here that Desi Bouterse was the party leader of the NDP, and so when the trial started the NDP dominated legislature immr bediately passed an amnesty law absolving him of his crimes. The pardon laws in Suriname are quite uncertain, so he wanted insurance that he would never spend a single second in jail. In response, the judiciary basically said "no." and continued their trial against him. After he failed to gain the presidency in the 2020 election, Desi Bouterse tried to fight the trial head on but the evidence was overwhelming and I think the amnesty law was overturned by the new parliament. Very recently, just a year or so ago, he became a fugitive and is technically being hunted by the government but there is a strong chance he is just still residing in one of his many luxurious properties in the capital. Quite the ramble I know. But now let me tell you something actually very funny. Ronnie Brunswijk, the current vice president of Suriname, proclaimed himself king of the descendants of maroons and Africans in Suriname, or something like that. The specifics don't matter, but if you search online you can clearly see he was trying to make some sort of grandiose coronation as the "king of Suriname". The coronation itself was so lame, its honestly depressing and hilarious at the same time. This was not done when he was a bank robber or when he led the insurgency against his former employer, this was a few years ago. It basically became the laughing stock of the country until it collectively remembered that this is the man who will be president if the current president suddenly dies. Anyway, that was a very long ramble. I think there are a lot of other very interesting people in Surinames history, but they're very poorly sourced if at all and most of the information comes from people in the country so it can be quite unreliable and inconsistent if you try to gather information as an outsider. If Spartan761 ever wants to make a video on this guy, I will gladly help with translating sources and explaining the, not complicated but just stupid politics of a Latin American country's politics if he wants me to. I don't see Suriname being brought up online often, which makes sense because its the smallest independent country in South America, an already not so online famous continent, but if you were to make a video on its rather absurd history I would love to contribute if you want me to.

Although I could understand sentiment, a bit too much of an emphasis at antisemitism in Ukraine during this period is placed, without proper explanation. Antisemitic feelings were raised in people by tsarat (tsar's government) for a long time. People were literally taught to blame jews for everything, conspiracy about them killing christian children was spread amongst 'em, jews were forced to live separately from other nations by authorities. So when tsarat was gone, common people based their logic on "facts" they were taught. This could be seen in white army's pogroms to be effectively a mundane well-sharpened tool they used. The tsar's army strategy of sort, not a deed of anarchy as among UNA-allied independents or UNA officers (who often were ex-tsarat army officers, obviously filled with ideas from their previous service). Whites actively spread a propaganda of so-called "Jewish Bolshevism" phenomenon too. On the other hand, seeing extraordinary competence of Petliura's army (being a national army raised in literal year!)... it could be understood, why he wasn't quick to fight every antisemitic officer he knew. It wouldn't be shocking if he just thought the survival of his state, country and it's people is far more of a priority than cutting every competent officer's head off 'cause of those false (and sadly common during those times) beliefs. Pretty sure that if he would've replaced every such an officer -- we wouldn't be talking about UNA military successes now, for it would be none left to remember. Not to excuse movements of hatred of any sorts, but to provide a broader picture on what world was during this tragic period. Anyways, thanks for spreading the story of Ukrainian activist. Although not without a stain (as every man of a time) his glory shines bright for a hero he tried to be against all odds.
His name actually spelled Simon and pronounced as Seem-on Pet-lew-rah, not Sai-mon, and his born name actually Semen 😢 (that is why he changed it slightly)
Symon is correct, that’s the Ukrainian version of (the originally Greek) Simon. It isn’t pronounced as “See-mon” either. The Russian version is Semyon/Semen (Russian often omits the “yo/ë” as “e”). His name didn’t change and it certainly didn’t change because the Russian version of his name is “similar” (depending on the spelling used) to “Semen” lol.
love being this early, btw wanna make a vid about the only man in the world who was socialist, democratic, republican, fascist monarchist liberal and conservative?
All I knew about him was that he was supposed to raise more Ukrainian forces to help Piłsudski's forces in Kyiv. However due to still underdeveloped and new Ukrainian national identity most were indifferent and were just fine with being a part of the Soviet Union he failed to do so. And either way "selling" his country to Poland was still a better option than getting Holodomored 15 years later by Stalin, either way Ukraine didn't have any other options back then.
Huh famous authoritarian tries to thunder-run to Kyiv while the Ukrainian leader was better known for their career in media than politics before becoming a war hero? I've never seen that before

Kiev is the standard English version of the name both is correct. It's why many news organisation and academic books call it kiev. Unless you think they are wrong
@@baileygregory9192Oh I see but I do remember that the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs launch an online campaign called KyivNotKiev as they wanted western media and organizations to use the Ukrainian name of the capital as part of CorrectUA campaign in 2018 also some of the videos I watched about history of Ukraine don’t use Kiev and are instead using Kyiv
@railworkskid9965 true but that doesn't change the English pronunciation of the name. Like did u know Turkey changed its official name yet nobody calls it by that name for the same reason we still use the English version of kiev, because it's far easier for English speakers to pronounce. Plus about 20% of ukriane population speaks Russian as a first language and thus calls it kiev any way so it's hardly wrong .
@railworkskid9965 I mean yeah if you want any other proof look at all the ppl who will write it as the ukrianian spelling or try to pronounce it but end up just doing the normal English pronunciation of kiev. It's just more natural for English speakers. One roles of the tongue the other requires me to actual think when saying it so I don't see any valid reason to change it

I want to add some information about pogroms. It wasn't an idea of "ukrainian nationalists" (our nationalism became something like an ideology only in 1920th) to kill jews. For officers it was a legacy of imperial army and russian "culture" because many of ukrainian soldiers were former soldiers of imperial army. Also jews were against ukrainians since they have began to choose sides of occupiers of Ukraine: Poland, russians, soviets. So they were deep asociated with enemy in ukrainian community for centuries. But Petlura wasn't one of antisemites. He had never called jews as "zhyd" (rude naming of jews in ukrainian and russian), there was even Ministry of Jews' Affairs in Dyrectoria. Also you mentioned that Petlura has tried to stop pogroms, but army wasn't enough monolite force and if he arrest any important general or commander, he can lost the loyalty of part of his army or even provoke a rebellion.

Great video but here's a guy for a short video: Sabam Sirait
*man what a forgotten history.*
You should do a video about Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, the leader of the Romanian Iron Guard. He is a pretty interesting character, to say the least.
Pls do Joachim Peiper next
can you make a video on the Belarusian collaborator Michal Vituska?
Are you going to more warships in the future?
What if you talked about Lovecraft I would be grateful if you talked about him
Bro is one of the best historians on the internet
@Spartan761 Hi Spartan761 - History , could you please make a video explaining how political commissars function in communist nations and how Russia's imitation of a Military Political Department impacts their performance in the war?
You really need to do a video on Pyotr Krasnov, he was a Don cossack ataman from a long line of military men and he would become the ataman of the Don republic in 1918 and after the civil war he would end up in Germany and eventually end up as a collaborator during ww2, also his grandson happened to be a important figure in south america
Could you do somebody Lithuanian? Like K. Škirpa or somebody else from the military?
First
No but fr any day you upload becomes slightly better lol

He's in there. He'll be much later on since I want to do him, Denikin, and Wrangel as a trilogy to close out the RCW series, but he's in the pipeline :)
@@Spartan761 Great video, would you consider doing marta kubišová
Fun fact: he posted this exactly at the time of the year people in eastern Europe have the topic which touches on the guy

Although not without a stain (as every man of a time) his glory shines bright for a hero he tried to be against all odds.
i was not expecting the "Infinite and the divine" to be referenced here
make a video about nazbol Eduard Limonov

Great video, have you thought of doing a video on Pio Filippani Ronconi?
wrangel when
mannerheim when (he counts, right?)
His name actually spelled Simon and pronounced as Seem-on Pet-lew-rah, not Sai-mon, and his born name actually Semen 😢 (that is why he changed it slightly)
Semen
Symon is correct, that’s the Ukrainian version of (the originally Greek) Simon. It isn’t pronounced as “See-mon” either.
The Russian version is Semyon/Semen (Russian often omits the “yo/ë” as “e”). His name didn’t change and it certainly didn’t change because the Russian version of his name is “similar” (depending on the spelling used) to “Semen” lol.
Maybe you can talk about the dragon of bosnia?
You have no right being this funny
love being this early, btw wanna make a vid about the only man in the world who was socialist, democratic, republican, fascist monarchist liberal and conservative?
Bro that’s half of the white army
babe wake up spartan just drop new vids
All I knew about him was that he was supposed to raise more Ukrainian forces to help Piłsudski's forces in Kyiv. However due to still underdeveloped and new Ukrainian national identity most were indifferent and were just fine with being a part of the Soviet Union he failed to do so. And either way "selling" his country to Poland was still a better option than getting Holodomored 15 years later by Stalin, either way Ukraine didn't have any other options back then.
Another day, another prayer to Bat'ko Makhno to get the makhno video so that i can truly live again 🙏
Shit yeah, moar Spartan stuff.
It’s so melancholic looking at these revolutionary Eastern European leaders knowing the fate their lands and people befell not soon after.

@@KS_Strugacz Based. but Ruthenians is the old name of Ukrainians who kept the name due to isolation in the Carpathians.
Isn’t it pronounce Kyiv now as Kiev is Russian pronunciation of the name of the capital of Ukraine
@@baileygregory9192 Yeah it understandable as people are more comfortable saying the name in English than what it called in it native language

No-no, that one will come much later.

Also you mentioned that Petlura has tried to stop pogroms, but army wasn't enough monolite force and if he arrest any important general or commander, he can lost the loyalty of part of his army or even provoke a rebellion.
actually, his name is pronounced see-mon🤓
It’s Symon, not See-mon. Ukrainian y is not spelled as “ee”.
18:15 That’s what makes anocracies so funny. It’s a cute little early Republic for a people that haven’t had a state of their own of any kind for a thousand years. It’s a little “f*ck you” to their would be overlords that have to waste time and resources putting them down as their grip loosens bit by bit.
So you are saying that Petliura was assiasinated by a jew that did collaborate with reds and was once stopped by Nestor fucking Makno the "I collaborate with reds and fuck up UNR" guy? Funny thing.
