I love how Sword and Shields are crealy OP in this Monster Hunter. My first run was almost SnS. Very nice run, btw. Good to see some love for the rough Freedom 1.
I've played every localized MH game but haven't touched gen 1 in AGES. For years my feelings on it were "I have good memories, but I don't recommend going back to those games." Stumbled on this video though and on a whim decided to download an emulator just for the heck of it, thinking I wouldn't play for long. But I'm having way more fun than I thought I would and now I want to play to the end! I'm glad this game is still being played. Thanks for the awesome speedrun and thanks for getting me to reconnect with such a nostalgic game :)

i really love how you always goof around while waiting the obligatory 60 seconds after killing a monster. Going to sleep in the base or giving the monster a kick just marvelous. I used to play this game on psp with my friends and we always tried to knock each other in the air with hammer/great sword, preventing each other from carving the monster.
I can't believe you had the patience to speedrun this game. Watching this and discovering the intrinsic details of the run are fascinating. Can't wait to see runs with a voice over.
This game is a lot more frustrating to speedrun than it first seems. RNG kills the run every step of the way until after Liver of Legend, but just when you think you're home and free the Gypceros' carves and rewards will decide if you're allowed to continue. It's a mess. I do have plans to completely rework this run and build an entirely new route, which I do have some ideas for, but that was put on hold because of Unite.

Hey! I'm glad to know someone is routing the original game, it's what I was doing before I ran Freedom 1! What weapon are you using for it? It was over a year ago when I first started routing for it but I believe I used the same weapon, the Poison Axe. During the gathering quests in 1 Star try optimise some of routing in that, for example doing Sushi fish before the potion quest so that you can grab a blue mushroom in 8 on the way to the fishing spot. Simple stuff like that really add up. If I remember right money sucks in that route so whenever you have downtime (the 20 seconds of when you deliver items to the box) try to search through the dung in area 1 in the hopes of getting Kut-Ku scales for some extra Zenny, it's a big help. If you're fast enough you should be able to gather 3 times before the timer runs out.
@@Rosiannachu I was using the Veil SerpentBlade with the Velociprey Armor Set just because it is one of the easiest and cheap to craft early game and it's fairly decent until midgame, but it's unfortunate that this set is not that good against Rathalos. The basic route i've been using was to farm "The Formidable Velocidrome!" about 4~5 times to get the GS and armor pieces, get Nitroshroom at Zone 3 for additional Sonic Bombs, so "Liver The Legend!" and "The Land Shark" doesn't take forever, also get some money and hunt items (sm Barrel-Bombs and Flash Bombs) for free. Today i'll be testing some Lances, i've seen on multiple forum discussions that Lances are very effective against Wyverns, even though i prefer SnS. Thanks for your advice, i'll do some research with the Poison Axe as well.

Hey, thank you, I'm glad you liked it. To do a ledge cancel like that you hold up right into the invisible wall corner. My controller tracker gives a general idea of the angle you hold

First of all, great video, i got interested in watching speedruns a lot, and a lot of them have annoying commentary, but not yours xd. One question, as far as i know, MH freedom was for psp right? What vesion are you playing? Because ive started playing mhfu on psp (emulated) and your camera movement looks so smooth, and you even show you have inputs on the right analog, its just adding the dpad controls to the right analog? Im sorry if i didnt explain very well, english is not my first language xd Pd: 14:45 was just lucky or u are a machine of calculating lol
Thank you! Yeah Freedom was for PSP, I'm using an emulator called PPSSPP. You can assign a command to two separate buttons, for example I have the D-Pad on both the buttons and the Right Stick to make camera movement much easier. Cephalos have a set swimming path in Freedom 1, compared to Freedom 2 and Unite where it is much more random, so if you know where they're going you can do doubles like this often.

Leather vambraces give the "handler" ability. This allows me to run much much faster while holding the Powderstone, not just for speedrunning purposes but to make that quest actually bearable

Sword and Shield in Freedom 1 specifically is very very strong. Rushing assassin's dagger first gives you a strong enough weapon to get past Rathalos but getting poison axe makes everything easy. Poison Battleaxe would be great to get too but in a Speedrun the materials needed are too rng reliant and I decided it's not worth it
I don't know this game that well so I'm just trying to figure out how you got to the Velocidrome without doing any key gathering quests before that, unless there just aren't any
Oh jeez, it's been a long time since I did this run so it's hard to remember... I think it was just the RNG at the start of the run. The mining then followed by Liver of Legend was a lot of RNG all in one stretch and was a big wall most of the time. I think the run is pretty straight forward after that. Gypceros RNG can be a royal pain too if you don't get Poison Axe
I love the older generations, they're what I grew up with and I felt that they were very unexplored with the opportunity to discover so much more from them and make them great speedruns. It was also because I really wanted to bring more attention to these games, I think they deserve it, even if they're not for everyone.

@@hsalfesrever3554 If you find yourself not liking this one then I heavily suggest Freedom Unite, it has a lot more content and polish than Freedom 1, but if you enjoy Freedom 1 anyway then that's great. I certainly still do
If you want to use the strongest weapon, then you'll want to use the Sword and Shield. Pretty much any of them will be good enough since the weapon is famously overpowered. As for armour though there's a decent amount of options. Kut-Ku armour is good to get you through the start. Rathalos armour is good if you want more damage. My favourite however is a combination using Blackbelt armour so you can get the Sharpness +1.

The goal of Any% in this particular game, like many, is to unlock the credits sequence, which is what you get for killing the Monoblos. It is not a full village speedrun, that would have its own category.
No, sword and shields were made a lot stronger in this game than Monster Hunter 1. The weapon was made weaker after this game as it was probably too strong.
@@janyozenith9037 No, they got nerfed when headlocking become weaker. They're not super weak but they're outclassed by other weapons. They have a lot of lag in Freedom 1 which brings them down a notch compared to their Unite versions which fixed a few things

Yes it would! The route for this game is quite old and not optimised. I plan on returning to this game in the future and making a new route for it. In the future the SnS is likely to be replaced and I'll be trapping monsters when I can.

Yeah, you can use something called Hamachi to play with other people. The Emulator most recommended is PPSSPP

In Freedom 1 the urgent is unlocked right away, removing the need to do the tutorial gathering quests

I thought "Revenge of the Yian Garuga" is a key quest. What determines it to pop up as an urgent or not?
You have to trigger it by watching a cutscene of him appearing during one of the non key quests. I believe it's a velociprey hunting quest

Is it legit though? The loading screen seem insanely fast, probably an emulator. The game had like 30 sec to 1 min loading screen time on legit PSP.
This is an emulator, they're legal in speedruns, however you can get these load times on a real PSP too
