Great video. One of the great things about this hobby is the amount of info out there for people to research and then the ability to make changes and decisions based on experience.
My skimmer is for a 450 l my tank and sump come to 650l and it does it just fine once your tank is established it doesn't need a big skimmer they take out too much goodness for corals but once your tank is established like after 2 years and your tongue has balanced itself out with bacteria and especially if you have a refugium and the phosphate reactor nice little video
totally agree a thing evry one seems to over look, once corals take over the tank and grown out the need for filtration declines, over the years my filration has failed bit by bit and the tank now is only running off live rock and corals with heavy fish load and still the tank is more stable then ever, only took 10 years but i got there
I’ve only ever bought Royal Exclusive skimmers with the amazing Red dragon pumps and have noticed that everything depends so highly on the bio load more so than the designated tank size....listen to the suggested size skimmer for you tank if well stocked or go one size lower if a light bio load.
I have the same experience as you with the Nyos 220, I have 1 on my Red Sea reefer 525, heavy bioload, full with sps, added a refigium and then couldn't set it properly. Sometimes there was wet foam comming out the lid. The pump has a annoying hum to it. It is a beast of a skimmer but only for bigger tanks. I now ordered a Maxspect SK400, rated for 400 liters with heavy bioload, 700 liters for medium bioload and 1000 liters for low bioload. I'd rather have a slightly undersized skimmer so it has to work hard and is easier to tune.
I think it was brs back in the day thay used to always say over size the skimmer lol.. but im glad theyr doing their research vids and trying to give a clearer understanding of things that are normally anicdotal.
I feel oversized makes sense filtration is something you can never have to much of. I personally went for a skimmer that was rated for between 250 (heavy bio load) to 500 (light bio load) gallons.
I have the tunze 9012 DC which is rated up to 1200 litres and this is on the reefer 625. I've always gone a lot bigger for two reasons. That's what I was advised to do by the first fish stores I bought from. Admittedly that was a long time ago now, and the second is, I suppose somewhere in my mind, I'm always toying with the idea it'll be good for a larger tank if I upgrade. I suppose it's the old idea of going a lot bigger so you can cope with the highest bioload, although a well growing refugium is much more effective. I wouldn't wanna buy something expensive and and rated exactly for my tank and then have to buy a larger one later on as it's not man enough for the job. Somebody did tell me a few years back that if you go too big with a larger neck, you won't have enough bioload to create the head of foam and it will collapse before it reaches the skimmer neck. That sort of makes sense. My first skimmer was a TMC V2 400. God they were awful! Needed cleaning every few days to get any sort of skimmate.
What a interesting subject, great vid, was thinking about this recently and you really got me thinking about which skimmer to go for on my new tank ea reef pro 900 (267 L).
I have a Tunze skimmer rated for 600L on my xxl750 and it’s perfect. Between my massive fuge (removed the divider) and my sulphur reactor I can’t keep nitrates above zero and I have a heavy bio load. Phosphate.02
The amount of people in the trade & LFS who hand out advice about skimmers and kit in general.. When I mention BRS TV, they roll around with laughter.. and say those guys are clueless. Imo, I look at the huge amount of kit they are accessible to. The knowledge base that brings.. Etc. Finally, I met errm a young(ish) lady that has been a marine biologist for 30 years working on Pacific reefs.. I asked her advice about skimmers. Her answer was in the form of a URL..... BRS TV..
It's true they have an interest in selling stuff but you never get the impression they're doing that - they genuinely seem like hobbyists who are interested in advancing the hobby. Great to have them 🙂
The problem was that you added a roller filter and refugium. The oversized skimmer was working perfectly. The filter and refugium now remove the majority of nutrients and now you only need a tiny skimmer. Your nitrates and phosphates were perfect before you made those changes. Why did you feel they were necessary?
My livestock has grown significantly in that time as well and I want to be able to feed heavily, which is why I bulked up my filtration. I had hoped the chaeto might help my phosphates as they increased, but that hasn't worked out. The filter roller was added to help with water clarity and I like having a refugium to support my wrasses/dragonet 🙂
The bigger the reaction chamber in the skimmer the longer the exposure time the water has to the bubbles there for the better it works. Also a bigger skimmer removes more waste faster so you could expect that at some point it would clean the water and stop skimming for a while making it look like you need to raise the water level when in reality there just isn’t anything left to skim. So raising the water level would cause it to over skim when the water gets dirty again. However, I can see space for you is an issue so make it work for your setup.
I never understand why people have problems tuning Quantum skimmers - even after a total soak and clean it takes about 10 minutes to get back to producing black skimmate - Deltec have nice ideas but they are a bit flimsy in the build quality which is surprising as they are a German brand, good luck with it though Alex.
Your heading seems inaccurate. It should say something along the lines of “why you shouldn’t buy a slimmer rated for a tank 4-5 times the size of your tank, instead get one that is rated 1.5-2 times the size of your tank”. Your new one is still rated for more than your tank and you said you may wish you got one rated 2 times your tank. 1.5-2 times seems about right to me.
I’m thinking of downsizing my bm curve 7 to something smaller for a couple of reasons: first my tank is smaller now (reefer 200XL) and the space is limited. My current skimmer works very nice but I need to find a little space for my Kali stirrer. After watching this video… I feel the pain. Time to downsize.😊
Nyos 220 is crazy for a 400 L real volume. Nyos 120 would have been a better option(maybe the correct one). Still maybe Deltec is not the best option for the money.
@@Langenbergh The best are the RE if you find one with the rating of 400 l. Nyos is a good choice , as already said. Also the Italian made ones (Ultra Reef) are really good. AquaBee Cove Skimmers also good.
i did also downgrade my skimmer ..... small skimmers are great due to the size of needles , seems to pick up better smaller debris than a bigger skimmer .
For this tank, I'm happy with the 600. I like the compact size and it does a really good job. I do like the cup drain the 1000 has though - I feel the 600 should have it too...
I have a REDSEA425 + REDSEA600RSK skimmer But i want to downsize tho because i never seen black poo in the skimmercup (11months setup) So i want to buy a REDSEA300RSK Any suggestions?! Kind regards Danny
Hi metaldanny - what did you end up doing buddy? I have a 425 also and a 600 skimmer and have been ultra happy. I had a TMC to start with with then a Deltec (Everyone said they were great ) I didn’t get on with either.
Hiya I was wondering could you give me some advice im setting up a 1200 liter tank and I'm looking at a deltec 1500 or the nyos 220 but I've hard good and bad of both I'm leaning towards the 220 but not sure
No I haven't, but I love the features it's got. It was too big for my tank unfortunately. My Deltec is brilliant though and I prefer it to my old Nyos 220 so I suppose that's my answer to your original question 🙂
i think half your problem is you are trying to put too much kit in your sump if it was me i would run a recirculating skimmer with the feed pump running through a bio pellet reactor first before then feeding through the skimmer and a seperate reactor of rowaphos and thats it trying to run rowaphos a skimmer and cheato is too much and you just end up killing off the cheato.
Reef Dork thanks a lot i was looking for an upgrade and wanted a peninsula style like yours. im only 8months to the hobby would you recommend to upgrade now or wait at least a year of getting hands wet? budget aside
Here are sump mistakes you need to avoid - ua-cam.com/video/mOVll0hlPHQ/v-deo.html

Yeah, I think BRS are probably right but I still think I'd always oversize. Just maybe not too much.
Peninsula 650+Red Sea skimmer 900=great combo👍
Another excellent video!
I switched from a loud, crappy Nyos to a Deltect - looking forward to it being quieter.
Tear my hair out (metaphorically of course) 🤣🤣🤣

Yes we know better than the skimmer manufacturer what size skimmer to choose 🤔🙂

Funny, I just ditched my Nyos 220 for a BK180. Pretty much for the exact reasons on my 750l. Honestly, the Nyos pump is on its last legs after 2 years

"a slimmer"? You may want to correct this.

If you can afford it, the Ultra Reef UKS 160 looks a good bit of kit. Otherwise, I'd look at the Reef Octopus range.
