A perfect explanation of how to understand and adjust a skimmer. It boggles my mind that manufactures won't or can't take the time to explain this in their manuals. Nice job on making the video for the rest of us! Thanks!
I literally took my new skimmer out of the box and understood your explantion and followed your direction and my skimmer is working great! thanks dude!!!
A couple of tips I use to improve skimmer usage; 1) As part of my weekly skimmer maintenance I fill the silencer with RODI water. This water gets sucked though the venturi and helps get rid of any crusty buildup in the hose/venturi (keeping more consistent air flow and reducing the amount of disassembly/cleaning required). 2) Seems like none of the current skimmers on the market offer a chamber above the collection cup to hold filter carbon (helps reduce the smell of fish poop from the air passing through the collection cup). I glued a short piece of large diameter PVC pipe to the top of the lid to the collection cup and fill the new chamber with filter carbon (place a piece of screen in the bottom of the chamber to keep the carbon from clogging the vent holes or falling through into the collection cup) - makes my skimmer way less stinky to operate!
I was having a hard time getting the right "fuel to air" ratio with my skimmer. Then I looked closer and noticed I had some dried "gunk" in the inlet tube of the muffler. Cleaned it out and waiting to make adjustments. Thank you for the video BRS.
I noticed at the beginning of your video you showed skimmers with a lot of excess water. I always called that flushing. Star is definitely a happy medium. Great job on y'all's explanation
I LOVE THE DC PUMP their really good pumps also very silent. i am using aquamaxx cones dcq-3, the pump is so loud and it does clean to much foam coming out sure is hard to adjust sometimes it's good sometimes its needs to be adjusted

One important fact that everybody misses is a salt creep clogged Venturi !! This affects all submerged skimmer pumps. Externally mounted motor hob skimmers are less prone to this issue such as reef octopus hob 1000 and 2000 and eshopps hob skimmers .
I need one of those inline air valves with the barbs you guys have a part number for me so I can order one from ya? Awesome video guys keep up the great work ❤️❤️❤️
I'm picking up a Coralife 65 needle wheel protein skimmer what do I need to know and how do I set it up correctly I have a 75 gallon saltwater aquarium. With Rock and soft corals. Fish thx Pat.
I have a Red Sea rsk 900 have it at the water line and the airline pulling air from outside and during the day the foam it produces it great but one once the sun sets the skimmer starts skimming lean as described by the video. I have adjusted the water intake for it to start produce some foam but the next day it always overflows.
The bio load is at its lowest at that time. Even though fish never top with ammonia release that is still normal and then when the lights come on the bioload picks back up and peaks in 3-5 hours. Another reason ORP goes up at that time and then starts to lower when the load peaks. ORP is usually at its highest first thing in the morning.
Hi guys, great video. I have a new tank and am trying to get my new skimmer to bed in. Trouble is, everything is right down. The pump power setting. The air and the water level. It just constantly produces foam that forces its way out of the lid and overflows. It is at the prescribed water level in the sump. It is also filling my display tank with micro bubbles. HELP!
This would depend on the kind. Some you could alter the height of the collection cup, and you may be able to dial these in more closely through controlling the air intake.
I also have a hang on back skimmer and the thing is driving me nuts. It literally comes with “directions” that make little sense and I was on my own after reading them.
Dude been exspermenting been using soda lime on my skimmer more air means more co2 so I have turned my air and pump down and my ph is more stable because of photosinthis in the day it's the drop over night my question is can I turn my skimmer off over night so I not adding co2 over night because the pH lowers I have low load 2 fish mostly corals
The pH drop at night when the corals aren't photosynthesizing is completely normal. Without some sort of system to regulate co2 scrubbing media, like a solenoid, you're going to have a hard time completely eliminating the drop.
So I just cycled my tank and started skimming yesterday. I put the first food and fish today. Yesterday I got a nice foam an hour into hooking it up and it went all the way to the top. TODAY its doing the boiling pot thing lol. Does this mean I dont yet have enough organics in the tank ? Anyone please chime in, Thanks!
That is an adjustable baffle feature for that specific model of Trigger Systems Sumps. Almost all of the Trigger Sapphire sump models have them included. www.bulkreefsupply.com/sumps-tanks-refugiums/sumps/trigger-systems.html
One thing that you may want to look into is if the CO2 scrubber is substantially reducing the amount of air going into the skimmer. That could certainly impact skimmer performance.
@@josephbobak6019 Most likely that is a Finger Leather Coral (Sinularia notanda). There are several varieties but we've found them to be pretty common and easy to find from LFS and fellow reefer's. :)
If the water level in your sump is significantly higher than the recommended water level for your skimmer, you'll probably notice some performance issues like overly wet skimming and potentially overflowing. If your skimmer has a DC pump, you can sometimes adjust it enough to get by with the higher water level, but you still may want to consider a stand for your skimmer to raise it up to the correct water height.
Most skimmers will require a ~2 week break-in period where they may act finicky, overflow, or not work quite as expected. Once a biofilm starts to build up on the inside of the skimmer body itself, the skimmer will get more consistent. It's at that point where you'd be better able to fine tune it.
Air valve turn up for more foam to rise ( which raises the water and foam into your skimmer);and down for (which lowers the water and foam into your skimmer) less foam to rise into your circular chamber flow tube before it spills over into the protein capture cup.
The new Red Sea skimmers take away a lot if not all of the guesswork when it comes to how to tune. Very little break in time too! Ps. Very gross looking skimmate paste 🤢
Skimmers are not actually really efficient. Mostly dirty in and dirty out from too much flow and with lack of bubble dwell time in the reactor to collect waste. Also waste can come off the bubble before it gets into the cup. One of the best instruments have used to actually see organic load lowering is an orp meter. Both orp measurement and skimmer reactor design are from sewage processing and still used as a major stage in purification today all over the world.

super !!! 9999 !!!
So... is ‘breaking in’ same as tuning it? Doesn’t make sense I thought on a brand new tank to run one until i was told to “Break it in for 6 months.”

Do you start with the water valve or the air valve?
Air valve turn up for more foam to rise ( which raises the water and foam into your skimmer);and down for (which lowers the water and foam into your skimmer) less foam to rise into your circular chamber flow tube before it spills over into the protein capture cup.
