    I watched everything but the last 3 episodes so far. I had ABSOLUTELY no idea about the amount historical accuracy this show actually has. Never heard of the Ainu or the Russo Japanese war. But that could be due to U.S. schools refusing to teach japanese culture other than my japanese teacher in senior year of high school because of WWII. I did a decent amount of research recently and found this show is incredible. Not just for the story. For the actual factual portrayal of the indigenous japanese. I see in the comments "westerners" like me aren't really the ones watching it. And im upset with my fellow Americans. They wanna watch teenage girls in skimpy clothes, while this show is a TRUE GEM amongst anime I've seen.

      Do American public schools really need to teach their students about EVERY war?
      You can find the most random topic or fact on UA-cam and they'll be a comment in the comment section saying, "Why weren't we taught this in school???"
      US schools now can barely teach their kids basic numeracy. Why don't you focus on that first?

    • @umbrellashotgunman
      @umbrellashotgunman 6 місяців тому +1

      Like all things American, it kind of depends on where you live; we didn't learn about the Ainu in school, but we did touch on the Meiji Restoration and the Russo-Japanese War (since Teddy Roosevelt actually played a role in the peace negotiations). More probably, I think a lot of US schools don't go too in-depth on Japanese history for the same reason they don't go too deep on the liberal nationalist revolutions of 1848 Europe or Canadian history in general; it has a lot more to do with time and resource constraints than WWII.

      Yeah I feel like it would have been very popular with Americans 20 years ago. The types that enjoyed Cowboy Bebop.

      This is not only an action packed, comedy, fighting manga; but also a well crafted story with strong themes and something to say.

    Golden Kamuy is one of the greatest adventure stories ever. All those overhyped big budget fantastical ictional universes like the MCU and Star Wars can't hold a candle to an earthbound tale crafted out through sheer dedication. Yes, in fantasy and sci fi based universes you have the licence to throw in all sorts of out of this world jaw dropping designs and looks to hide the shortcomings in telling a good story with strong emotional content. But Satoru Noda don't have that luxury or can even be said to be handicapped by setting his story in a place not many people in the world care about during a period of history that even fewer know about about a forgotten tribe that barely anyone outside Japan heard about. And he made us live and breath every second of the characters' lives.

      Apart form the superb story telling and wealth of knowledge about the Ainu. Another thing I love are the fights where everyone turns super human when not fatally wounded, like a real person would. You won't see anyone really useless, even the grunts in this series are seriously dangerous unless you kill instantly. Stabbed in the face? No problem, fight back! Lost your leg? No problem, fight back!
      They all react like how real people on the brink of death would - to struggle, trying their damnest to claw their way out of the predicament they are in until they run out of breath.

    I just finished the manga as of 9:32 PM 21/10/2022. Golden Kamuy is ultimately a story about love. Be it the love of gold, sex, war, violence, religion, power, culture, nature, or, most importantly, the love and care of another. I will forever be in awe of Satoru Noda and the way he seamlessly transitions from scenes of emotional turmoil, life-threatening stakes, horrific violence, psychological manipulation and plot twists that'll leave you in utter disbelief to moments of casual conversation, sensual connections, natural beauty, serenity and incredibly detailed accounts of history and culture with a fair share of dick jokes in between so seamlessly, whilst not feeling forced or overdone at any point. It is this, combined with his mastery of writing such a wide array of unique, complex and compelling characters whilst still managing to interweave their lives in a way that doesn't detract from but rather compels each character's dreams, ideas and narrative, that easily makes this series a masterpiece in both storytelling and world-building.
    I will most definitely miss this series with all my heart. As Lt Tsurumi said, "The motivating force that can bring out the aggressiveness [desire to kill] in your soldiers... It isn't hatred of the enemy troops, nor is it fear... It isn't even a difference in political ideals... It's Love."

    Great video on a great work, with perfect timing as season 4 is coming out soon. It really was a "lived" in world with "real" characters, all of them were morally grey which is how we are. More so it was great to see the understanding/highlight that most of the cast are broken former soldiers... we had little understanding of what PTSD did you back then (hell in WW1 they finally began labeling it Shell Shock after all). Also reminded me that one of the fan scangroups that covered hit always had a end page of history facts that were referenced in Noda's work which really showed how much it studied and how much history there was with in it.

    • @BeyondGhibli
      @BeyondGhibli  2 роки тому +9

      Yes! Everyday Heroes provided incredible glossary pages that really elevated the reading experience and extrapolated on all the themes, history and culture of any given chapter. They also reminded you of callbacks and references you might have otherwise forgotten - and that really sold how intricate and well thought out Noda's storytelling was. I actually tried fitting in a paragraph about their incredible work into this video but couldn't find a way to talk about them without it feeling like I was endorsing scans over the official translations. Luckily, for anyone reading this that might be about to start reading GK, they provide a download of just those glossary pages on their website.
      Glad to see someone else who appreciated their work.

    Finally, an analysis of Golden Kamuy I can respect!
    Thank you for making this, it kind of hurts my soul how poorly this manga/anime is represented on youtube, I've been looking for a decent analysis for a while now and yours might be the only one that holds up! Thank you for this well-made video that accurately highlights the beauty and unique nature of this story!

    Thank you for making such a wonderfully produced video about a work that is so close to my heart.
    When I try to recommend the story to friends, I often don't know how to describe it. So thank you for now finding words where I was at a loss for words.

    This has inspired me to pick up the manga and watch the anime. Thank you so much for covering this. You are by far my most favorite UA-camr when it comes to the coverage of anime. I've been subbed since you covered Cowboy Bebop, and you never fail to impress. Keep up the good work Joe! Also congratulations on your marriage, I pray that it endures until death.

    I saw an Asirpa t-shirt was in a loot crate like last year. I immediately ordered it, but because I live in bumb fuck nowhere it cost a damn fortune in exchange rate and shipping and took 6 months, but yeah it arrived yesterday. Worth it. Hinna Hinna.

    This anime took me by storm. I am still hooked to this day. Very sad that the production is at hold but it's completely understandable it has to be this way.
