The REAL Reason Gaming Isn’t Fun Anymore

  • Most people aren't talking about the REAL reason that gaming is no longer as fun. I don't think many people are considering just how good we had it. Year after year getting insanely fun release after insanely fun release. New gameplay mechanics never before seen, EVERY YEAR! When you're seeing something new every year, there inevitably will come a time where there is no longer something new to see. That's where we are now. We've seen 1,000 Skyrims and 400 Battle Royale type games, but when we look back on when Skyrim and Battle Royale's were new, of course they feel more nostalgic! When Fortnite and Warzonze and Apex legends were fun, they were new!! They're not anymore yet that's all we're getting nowadays! This is the ACTUAL reason gaming isn't fun anymore...

It's funny to hear it. The honest truth is that it's a bit of both. It is true that games were more feature complete and had more love put into them 20+ years ago. But it is also true that the more you play games, the less interesting new ones become. Even new games that fit your old taste.

@@willy9204he's a kid, borne in an era that was already dead.
I was born in 82, and the Star Wars sit-down vector cabinet was my first video game ever... I even remember it from 4 years old, being at a flea market and playing it with a whistle pop my father bought me... and I had to sit on his lap to play the game.
Gaming has been negatively social for the last 15 years.
Back when I worked at Blockbuster in 03, I used to hang with my ASM many nights... we and his girlfriend would spend hours playing Halo, Burnout 2 crash mode, etc. But that's dead, and it died around that time.
My anecdote? I'm a black guy. The first time I ever encounter racist gamers was playing Halo 2 mp, Oddball. The guys on my team were good, but over the mic, they LOVED calling the skull the "N*gger-beater."
And in my nephew now, 21 years later... he is 9 and the only way he knows how to interact in online games is competitively, and being a bragadocious, uncooperative, loud little shit.
I need to talk to him about it more, but as it stands, it's not the games he loves. He loves having power over others. After all, most single player games he quits immediately, talking about how he's scared of things... he had Breath of the Wild for two years before I got it, and he said he quit because Guardians were scary.
So I learned, and literally perfect deflected 3 to death in front of him. But he's a child, and it seems he likes abusing younger kids in an arena where he is in his perfect comfort zone.
So maybe... you guys only have 10% of the picture.

My biggest problem with modern gaming is the loneliness that comes with it. Even in multiplayer, I am constantly by myself in my own little bubble. Well... I'd like to change that. Most of my favorite childhood games were built so much larger thanks to having a whole neighborhood of friends to experience them with. My goal is to find other people out there who are passionate about video games like me.

Another reason that never gets addressed: gaming is a social event as well. We now have the internet and multiplayer games, but when I was a child I had friends over to play games together. Even singleplayer games, taking turns and watching each other play, encouraging one another, celebrating wins together. As a teenager we had LAN parties, you had to get together in someone's home, bring some beverages, snacks, a sleepover, do it all over again the next day and you really had something to look forward to. It was a social, but very real get-together, with real human beings, instead of "the other end of the headset". That exact experience is now a convention. Your best social experiences in real-life gaming has now been turned into a cashcow by companies and that's why it will never be as much fun as actual gaming with your friends.

Another possible factor I’d like to mention is that with age comes more responsibility. I can’t speak for everyone, but these days whenever I try to get into gaming, I can’t escape the feeling that I’m wasting my time. I have responsibilities now; things won’t get done unless I get to them.
Your priorities and expectations were never as serious as a child come compared to now. If you were a typical kid, your world was mainly confined to your immediate surroundings and the present, which perfectly lended itself to video gaming since it gave you a “beyond world” to explore and get lost in. Now your beyond world is the future, YOUR future. You have to start thinking about your schooling, your finances, and your purpose in life. These are things you have to start
I think that existential burden breathing down our necks may be another thing that zaps the joy from gaming. This may also explain why the only people who seem to still really enjoy games are those who make their living off them. For them, there is overlap between their existential burden and gaming, which allows them to be fully immersed in the experience.

Balance? Your joking right the inbalance is why games are shit now. But you are on to something with it though. This is basicly how meta works and why games are trash. They lurr you in with a balance game but its a rabit hole nothing is balanced but thats what meta sheep think but the overall game is unbalanced.
Some games balanced broken with broken where fun could exist and some games that were actually balanced was fun.

That's 100% the reason. As child you could play with literally a box and it was fun... Think of it! As Adult you become aware of the waste time which video games eat up. You become aware that there are more important things in life than gaming. That's why you get "the bordom". It's an indicator to move on to greater things. Don't play with the box anymore. Play the real life.
Beside you don't get the bordom with things like swimming because they serve you even later in life. I think it's an unconcious process. The brain analyse and tells you stop wasting your potential and be active in things that serve you.

I actually think you are very right.
But grown ups may also feel like a game is unexplored or unknown.
Because when something new is out it sparks our curiosity. And that makes us wonder.
When I stopped playing games and went to Gran Canaria last year, everything was so new and a lot was diffrent from home. And we did some stuff I have never done before. That is what sparks interest and makes me curious, it keeps you happy.
I think, that finding joy in gaming is only natural, especially if you play the right games.
I do belive that you can find love in whatever you want if it gives you a spark of interest, whatever the age.
That's why I fell in love with Dark Souls 1 at the age of 19.
A brilliant game with a interesting story in the middle of a pandemic. An escape from reality into a dream world where you have to survive or die. It made me feel scared beacuse I so wanted to live as that caracter, I wanted to survive.
But when I played dark souls 2 and 3, they just did not have the same spark. Good games, but somehow I played though 2 and stopped halfway though 3.I played Elden Ring, but the open world did not fit my Dark Souls criteria
I played these games with breaks of about one year apart from eatchother.
It may be that I am now older and look at games diffrently, it may be beacuse I have other values and think that games are bad beacuse of social media or it might be beacuse I have not played somthing that gives me that spark.
One thing I do know, Indie games and good story games are the best, and if you get invested you may never go back to those multiplayer shootergames.
If I want to be with other people, I whould rather go outside and play fotball for example.

IMO many of the AAA games that come out are lazy because franchises are easy and have established fanbases. They don’t require original ideas. Just reskin it tweak a few things and release it for the price of a new game.

A couple of things I need to say
    1. Plenty of games are innovating, you just have to look past the AAA bullshit and take a look at some indie games
    2. How the hell are games like PUBG and Fortnite old already? Maybe I’m in denial, and 19 might be older then I realize (to me seeing some people call the Wii “retro” makes my brain melt), but it still feels weird.
    3. I do agree that we need to stop expecting games to constantly be this bigger in scope masterpiece, because it just makes games feel bloated, and I feel like it causes things like the PCVR community to focus more on shit like graphics over a game having actually good gameplay.

Super Nintendo with Donkey Kong Country. I have two younger brothers, and over the years, we became dedicated gamers. It was the SNES, then N64, Xbox, PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One X, Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox Series X. THOUSANDS of games played…. I'd argue the problem is exactly that - companies trying to make "bigger and better" games. I don't think i'm the only one here, who wouldn't mind more smaller in scale games that had somekind of focus and identity instead of trying to be "all in one" simulator. This open world sandbox stuff filled with side quests, items to craft, resources to gather bla bla bla..... it's all just overwhelming, and when you get overwhelmed you just avoid playing the game cause it's frustrating. Developers have totally went overboard with trying to add more gameplay hours into their games.
I feel like RTS genre has not received enough love from AAA studios for over a decade. To be honest, there are many other genres that do not have enough releases, like survival horror games for example or arena shooters like quake.
Also, what happened to games that allowed you and your friend to play through the entire campaign/story? Every multiplayer game is now pvp based, wish there were more games that let you and your friend play through the main storyline via couch co-op or online atleast.
I think what developers should focus on is more variety, i swear most AAA releases are some variant of GTA mixed with some crafting elements and that's why it feels like we have no innovation.

  • @phorty2
    @phorty2 4 місяці тому +2

So id like to point out how this actually started happening when game development was seen to be a profitable business.
what also happened was that major gaming studios became so large and compartmentalised that they lost focus on WHY they were making those games. This compartmentalisation also meant that and individual dev just does their job, and has no view of the bigger picture, or if they do, management does whatever they want instead.
basically what im saying was that turning creativity into a business killed creativity. as you said, thats why COD has sucked so many times. its why ubisoft keeps making halfassed AC games. Its why no major studios make anything new, not because we've run out of things to make but because the studios decided it's potentially unprofitable to take risks and innovate any further to make something truly new and unique.
When shareholders come before the gamers, you are doomed to make a poor product.

i think the problem isn't that we're not willing to wait longer for good games. it's more that the developers aren't willing to take the time. look at all the games these days. most of them are in early access for more than a year. so we're playing a game that's still in development and doesn't have all the features we expect. If the developers wait some time, plan the game properly, and give us a finished one, i think we'll have more fun than if we play a game with maybe half as fun because of missing features, bugs, and performance issues. because when they fix some of those issues, it's more like "yeah, finally, but that's what i expect them to do" instead of "oh, look how smoothly this game works" or "look at all the features this game has!" The older games were stunning because they made huge advances all at once rather than a small one every 3 to 4 months. today's games are more like eating only soup one day, only beef the next day, and only vegetables another day, instead of enjoying a delicious ramen.

A video game doesn’t change unless they update it. So if you feel different about what you played in the past then it just means you got bored of it and need something new.
The game itself didn’t change, the way you feel about it did.
As of playing new games and not being amused: That’s a guarantee since not everything that comes out is gonna click with us. That’s a given ever since video games were a thing.

I think another reason why gaming isn't fun anymore is because of game patents, like the ones that happened in Tears Of The Kingdom and the Nemesis System in Shadow Of Mordor. At least they expire, like the "playable game in a loading screen" concept that was patented by Namco being expired in 2015 and the "arrow acting like a compass" from Crazy Taxi being patented by Sega, now expired in 2018. Still sucks that we have to deal with patents even today tho, even if they have them long ahh expiration dates.

Pop and electronic dance music had a new sound that was never heard before. Cartoons and such had aggressively eye catching looking characters and art that we hadn’t seen since the 90s and we as people were more relaxed and care free back then because there was too much to enjoy. Partying was huge because of the constant party music being released and people were dying to hear those songs live on the big speakers. As Jdyo said, we were able to get more done and make more money with less work making us carefree, happy and more nice towards each other.

It’s not that they “can’t” inovate, they just see that their clients are buying their trash man. If you think that gamers are spoiled, you’re way off the mark. I really just don’t care about graphics and a lot of these technological improvements. It’s still about Gameplay to me. Discovering the Souls series in 2021 in my 30. was the most fun I’ve had since playing Pokémon when I was young. I found Dark Souls, a 10 year old game, to be much more fun than technologically “better” games like RDR2 and TLOU2, which to me kinda feel like interactive Netflix shows more than “games”. I just want gameplay to be the focal point of AAA games going forward, not handholding, cutscenes, and roadblocks.

    • @AGFuzzyPancake
      @AGFuzzyPancake Рік тому +2

I've heard the "all i care about is gameplay" sentiment many times before and it doesn't acknowledge that gameplay and graphics/technology work hand-in-hand in making a fun experience.
For example, Skyrim's core game design could have been implemented in a different looking game that would run on Playstation 2 hardware. It would probably still be fun on that hardware, but I will argue it wouldn't have been the smash hit it was. The joy of Skyrim is due to in equal parts to the sheer artful spectacle of it as the fun and accessible RPG elements.
And that's not even touching on performance. If Dark Souls ran at 15 frames per second at 360p on consoles and PC's at the time, you could speak all day to how sound the game design is, but you still wouldn't want to play it.
In other words, games require a baseline of technical competency (graphics) to be fun and that baseline is quite high now. I imagine you didn't play Dark Souls on period hardware, did you?

There are several factors that may contribute to the feeling that new video games lack soul and are more business-oriented than player-friendly. One possible reason is the increasing focus on monetization and microtransactions in modern video games. Many game developers prioritize revenue generation over creating a rich and immersive gameplay experience, leading to games that feel dry and boring.
Another factor is the homogenization of game design. As the gaming industry has grown, there has been a trend towards creating games that appeal to the widest possible audience. This often means simplifying gameplay mechanics and removing elements that might be considered niche or difficult to understand. While this approach can make games more accessible, it can also lead to a lack of depth and complexity that can make them feel soulless.
Additionally, the rise of open-world games has led to a focus on quantity over quality. Many modern games feature vast, sprawling worlds filled with repetitive tasks and activities. While these games may offer a lot of content, they can also feel empty and devoid of personality.

Idk it depends on the open world creators... take Rock Star open worlds they are so engaging that once you do all the missions you still play the game as there is still stuff to do like blow up the city and cause havoc...some people never do the missions because this world they made is so distracting... now look at ubisoft open world... do the missions and there is Zero incentive to stay in the world... no missions is the death of the world and game... I had fun in many ubisoft open worlds but even in old Edzio Assassins creed games after you beat the game and do all missions and check off the stuff on the map the world expands and yet gets empty... and most developers of open world follow the ubisoft model. So it's not that open world is bad just what type of open world, and I think that developers need to think about this before just chasing trends as God of War (new ones on ps5) is great and it is a linear type game still with an open world feel... yet you cannot progress without completing missions and the game expands but not too much not enough to be open world... like Halo CE is a good example of a very linear progression that felt awesome as you could explore everything but it was very much so a linear processing game. When open world is done right like Breath of the wild its great... done poorly like almost any new ubisoft formula it feels dead.

I bought several times more games as a teen in the 90's than I have in the last 10 years as an adult with disposable income (most of my adult purchases were nostalgia buys anyway). The decisions of game design are currently made either by committee or by a producer and are no longer made by a passionate game designer or project lead.

As you've stated, games are taking much longer to make but that shouldn't be the case. Movies are still being made in the same timeframe, perhaps even quicker, than they were in the past. Technologies have gotten better: CGI, cosmetics, makeup and other amenities that aid the production of a movies has become more accessible and refined throughout the years. Avengers: Endgame only spent 5 months in shooting and was released 15 months later. On average though it takes about maybe 1-2.5 years for a high production movies to be created from beginning to end.
In terms of gaming, GTA 4 took about 3.5 years to make whereas GTA 5 took just 3 years. Why is it just now that the production time has suddenly skyrocketed only within this generation? In my personal opinion, it has absolutely nothing to do with the advancement of technology since that has become easier to access for everybody. Literally, anybody with a modern smartphone can make 3D photogrammetry art without having to spend a single dime or days or weeks creating it from scratch as it would have taken in the past.
The problems the industry faces has everything to do with the decision-makers at the top of the business hierarchy that have made things difficult for everybody involved in the development of these games. The games cost more to make? Then why not add in more manpower to the production? They're simply looking for ways to save money while still paying low wages to their employees. It's why the quality of gaming has gone down tremendously in AAAs, why we no longer see innovation and why they're taking so much longer to make.

Nowadays every single game is around $60-$70 and the size of each game makes it to where you kinda have to choose what AAA games you wanna play because of lack of storage space. I remember when it was actually cheaper to buy games digitally rather then a physical copy, now they made digital copies the same prices as a physical copy. Finally someone addresses the same issues I have with the current gaming industry in general. It is not monetization, it is not nostalgia, it is not competitiveness nor boring open world fetch quests, even though all of these could also be a factor aswell. It is the fact that gone are the days where a single game like Half-Life 1 and 2 or GTAs 3 to 5 would entirely create a new revolution in the entire industry by themselves with just one release because they were just that ahead of their time and groundbreaking and redefine entire genres all over again from the square one. I've grown up through my childhood and early teens believing we would all have NPCs with individual daily routines and AIs that could realistically rival that of human beings organically, but here we are with generic Ubisoft Open World game #47 once again.
Although I wouldn't go as far as to say it died, gaming started to finally show signs of hitting the wall after the early 2010's. The PS4/Xbox One console generation was truly the era when everything started going downhill with 0 innovation.
