I just found your channel ❤! Great review!! I highly enjoyed this memoir, and I am so glad he wrote this before his passing. As a Friends fan, it was very enlightening.
Just finished it and I agree that he is pretty full of himself, so self-centered. Lord, how many times did he sort of brag that he was never left alone in the hospital- that family and friends were there for him? Self-pitying and invested in blame a lot as well. It was fairly well-written though, and he had some passages, or even phrases, that I really liked. The one about his "pink sky" moment was great. Sadly, when I finished it my first thought was that he is not out of the woods. Great review- thumbs way up.
I think you did a great job summarizing the book and providing a balanced review. I appreciate the insight into his childhood, which helped inform why he felt the way he did and maybe provided a glimpse of understanding about how alcohol and eventually drugs would be enticing to fill those unfulfilled needs he had. I do believe there was a balance in his own life of resentment for the way things played out in his life as a result of his parents’ choices as well as a glimmer of grace and understanding (and maybe even forgiveness) for them that he came to later on. So while yes, resentment is there, I do believe he also understands they loved him in the way they could coming from their own brokenness (also mimicked in Chandler’s relationships with his parents on Friends). He does seem egocentric, but at times it almost seems like a bitter nod to all the hype that was surrounding them during the height of their fame, so I also tend to take that tongue in cheek like so many of his comments and jokes (he has a very dry, very sarcastic, very self-deprecating way of joking that not everyone truly gets). I did appreciate the ending where he is trying to find value within for who he is, not what everyone expects that he is. And his gratitude list at least provides a jumping off point for hope for the future. Time will tell if any of it sticks. But it was good to see him in person on his book tour and hear his voice and see him seem well and have his wit on display. I pray that he truly does seek God and truly understand the God of the Bible, not the god that this world wants to sell everyone. Because that is truly what that hole in him is screaming out for and the only thing that will truly satisfy his longings.
Thanks for sharing! You make some good points. That's so cool you got to see him on his book tour! The interview he did with Elizabeth Vargas during his tour is available on her podcast so I want to give that a listen.
@@WhytheBookWins that is the tour stop I got to see. I felt that her battle addiction made her a great moderator. Not really any new information beyond what was in the book, but it was just great to see him and see him doing well.
I started this book, but honestly it was just too hard to listen to and I had to stop. Just got the impression of constant overwhelming pain. So hard to live like that. I don't think it's fair to judge how he felt. It is just how he is wired and he can't help it. He's obviously highly sensitive in the first place. I think that's the definition of people struggling with a mental disorder. Some people experience trauma and it doesn't trigger anything. Other people might be prone to a mental illness, but no traumatic event triggers it so it never manifests. You can't judge the severity of an event based on how you personally would react.
Glad you enjoyed Matthew's memoir I was planning on reading the book until I heard about what he said about Keanu Reeves that was truly disrespectful to me because Keanu was best friends with river Phoenix
I do think the comment was unnecessary and his editor or someone should have told him to take it out. But even so, I think people are making too much of it. It was a bad joke for sure, but I don't think it should prevent people from reading the book. (And if anything, it has only made people love Keanu all the more lol so it's not like Keanu getting bad press from it.)
His colon exploded??!?? 😵 oh wow. How painful that must be!!! This does sound good. He was my favorite on the show, though I'm not a big fan (I preferred Seinfeld). I would find this a worthwhile memoir to read for sure. Interesting and surprising to me that the season he was nominated for was a dry season for him... because most artists need the alcohol/drugs to lose the stage fright and be the actor/band front man/etc. And I agree he did change the language culture. I still say "Oh. My God." It's become part of my own way of speaking. (my husband laughs at me and says, "OK, Chandler")
I agree Seinfeld is better! But yeah, the story with his colon was crazy, and he's had like 14 surgeries for it. And that is cool he was so influential on the way we speak! He seriously brought that up like ten times though in the book 😆
I think he was gay. I mean he was infinitely desirable for many years. Women were crazy about him so he would’ve had no trouble. But because his life was lived in the public eye, he lacked the confidence to live his truth. So, his biggest darkest secret was his sexuality.
To be honest, the book made me lose respect for him. He comes across as pompous, self-absorbed (bragging about he changed how America pronounces things 🙄, bragging about how rich and famous he was), shallow, arrogant, immature and lacking self-awareness. I felt it was full of Matthew feeling sorry for himself but not learning from his mistakes and blaming them on others (genetics, riding on plane alone, thousands of women used, rehabs don't work, bad parents, dentistry, etc). Hate to speak ill of the dead, but this book really lost my respect for the guy. I love Chandler but Matthew seemed like a horrible person.

Yeah very true! He does seem to be more on the sensitive side.
I felt that too. I think he may have been bipolar.

He had said that he picked a random name, and could have just as easily chose his name. He also said he had nothing against KR.
What did he say? I v forgotten
08:55; head of the studio hated that they unionized.
Not surprising!
Enjoy the memoir too, glad coming out now in time for Friends Thanksgiving episodes
So true haha
