Back in 1976 I had a 1966,pretty much the same colour as yours. After watching your videos I realize how much I miss it. Thanks for sharing.

A classic job nicely filmed. I hope the push rod adjustment is good. There should be just a fraction of play at the actuating arm and the pushrod or you are likely to get clutch slip. Unhook the spring from the arm to make the check easier. Yes I realise this was done some months ago!.

Nice job! What would we do without VP Autoparts? You're right about these cars working with so many little things wrong, I bought a '67 last month, drove it home 250 miles from Solvang to Sunnyvale, CA with absolutely no problems. Since then I've been working on fixing a lot of those littile things, especially the rat's nest of wiring behind the dash, undoing 55 years of people messing with it. Lots of things disconnected, wires to nowhere, extra switches, etc. I counted 23 holes drilled in the bottom edge of the dashboard!

Holy cow, and I thought mine was poked a lot! I had a similar drive home when I bought Newton; but from Lodi and with with mushy brakes. Turns out my rear brake cylinders were seized, drums worn out, and hand brake unable to engage. People used to really "Drive it like you hate it," I guess :)

@@MakeitOnce My left/rear brake's been dragging since I got the car, I finally got the drum off (10-ton hydraulic press & 4-pound sledge got it) and found that both pistons are seized. Of course I already had all the parts to redo the brakes except the wheel cylinders! Ordered new ones from IPD.

I had it on stands for maybe 6 weeks doing the rears. I had the brake kits and the puller (plus sledge hammer), but then needed to wait for the cylinders. Got those on, then realized the drums were past the wear point, so had to wait for those parts. Also, super expensive for a pair of drum brakes, so I now know why it wasn't done before. Not easy to adjust, either, with the way they designed the hand brake on the Amazon. They improved the brakes a LOT for the 140's (and like 10% the price), but as a trade off made the bearings unserviceable. It's always something :)

The first clutch cylinder I did in the early eighties I got a rebuild kit of several seals. Once I had it out I had no idea how to get at the insides, then I dropped it and and it popped out. The clutch cylinder I got years later for my 1800 was the complete item. What wears out is the sharp edge on a rubber plug that is on the central shaft. Maybe a ten cent part...
Did you get your Volvo Nuts calendar? My 1800 is on the cover.

Such a simple design but so solid in the way it works. I thought about the rebuild kit, but would have had to add in the line and fitting and springs etc. The parts were all so rusty/worn and rubber in tatters on both ends, it seemed like a better idea to replace it all. Also, I read that once the outer dust seals fail, dirt gets in there and grinds away at the cast aluminum. Since the springs don't pull straight back longitudinally it always wears unevenly, making the bore out of round causing it to potentially lose the seal even with new plugs. Officially, the whole thing is considered a wear item and recommended a full replacement. New parts also make it easy for inspection at some future date, so a mechanic/buyer can quickly see which parts are "new." I, obviously ignored that idea and bought it with all this beautiful "patina" pre-installed. :)
