Took my 12yo twins to Empire Farm Days yesterday. Met Laura and Grant shortly after our arrival. For all that watch, these appear to be real people! I carried on a conversation with Grant and Laura for a few moments and I was convinced… real people (friendly too!). I honestly wished that I could have asked a hundred or so more questions so as to further carry on our conversation. Grant and Laura, I know that you get too many comments to read, but I hope that know that you made my day!! Real and nice people can be hard to find… THANK YOU FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE!!!

You should come to the East Idaho Farm Expo in Pocatello Idaho in January. It’s all inside and all the big equipment is there. Mostly grain and potato equipment. And then go snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park.

It was a pleasure meeting Laura and Grant today at Empire farm days. I really enjoyed talking with both of you. If you get a chance to come back to New York the things you need to see are the thousand islands, Adirondack mountains, Niagara Falls, emerald lake, herkimer diamond mine and most importantly Biar and Cedar beagle club where my little beagle Lucie Lou runs. Thank you for sharing your family with us.
Ps Grant if you ever want to go snowshoe hare or cottontail rabbit hunting let me know.

Laura, we're gonna hold you to getting your pilot's license one day. no rush but we won't go forgetting too soon. nothin teaches you discipline and the elegance of process like flying. In farming youve learned biology, engineering, landscaping, mechanics, and so much more. learning to fly would be a great way to push yourself that much more when youre ready. always love the content. sending good vibes to you, grant, nyfg and all your families. G-d's speed!

@Mark: agreed. The one thing I never liked about the dairy industry, but it goes with the territory. A grade school friend of mine, his family owned a dairy farm. They milked twice a day 4 AM and 4 PM.

I farmed in upstate NY ( about 3 hrs east of where you were). This reminds me of the county fair we had every September. It was a week long and most people, even when they didn’t have a 4-H entry ) would stay all week and sleep wherever. It was the last big event of the summer. School started soon after it ended.

Laura, yes they do to have tile machines in Nebraska! Just 20 miles east of Lincoln the farming area has a lot of tile. Those same/similar machines work in these heavy clay hills. Keep up the good work!

It's great to hear you both had a wonderful time in upstate New York. It truly is special here in many ways. With big Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, and all the other lakes and rivers and mountains, there is a lot to see and do and enjoy here, including some great fishing. I hope you both will return again. I will definitely attend next year's show to meet you both and buy some merch. Thanks. Take care.

8:39 That’s a huge operation. We never had more manure than we could spread on the fields. Since crop rotation was used, and there was always a pasture that could be used after the cows clipped it down. Something you never see in Nebraska, there were more woods than trees on many farms where I lived. And yes to the rock picking! I’ve picked more rocks than ANY single crop. Probably more than all crops combined. Back then it was a rock sled and bending over one rock at a time. We did have one vegetable garden that we found a boulder in it that’s probably still there. We stopped digging when it was 8 feet around at 8 feet down. Who knows how deep it went. We just put dirt back on it and planted over it.

You guys are so cool. I've always loved farmland. I just drove to and from Wisconsin to Texas and saw a lot of corn, soybeans and wheat. And then a ton of rice in Missouri and Arkansas. I have to say, being a Louisiana guy I am partial to acres and acres of very green rice in flooded fields. About five years ago I heard the investor Jim Rogers opine that a growth job for young people in the future would be farming. Best of luck with it and best of luck negotiating the current inflated prices for everything, especially diesel.

The most impressive thing about the farm was that shop! I've been around dairy farms my whole life but I've never see a shop where they had that much work going on in one building. And how many farmers will take on the job of splitting a tractor and rebuilding the engine? Then there is the mower where they are apparently replacing the engine in that. Impressive. They must have a few expert mechanics working there.

Glad to see that there's still a smaller dairy farm in operation. A lot of the family farms in Upstate NY have going out of operation (due to taxes, costs, etc.). Many of them now have a side hustle where they rent their land to the industrial farms, as places where the larger farms can spread their excess manure (they show up in tanker trucks).
