- netflix recently released their genderswapped remake of the 90s teen classic "she's all that" and i have... thoughts on it. the film stars tiktoker-turned-singer-turned-actress addison rae and "he's all that" follows in the footsteps of its predecessor to a fault, resulting in a mediocre viewing experience that could've been easily improved. in today's review we go into the decent, the bad, and the awful, and yes, that includes the costume design. what did you think of he's all that?

Surprisingly I found this part kind of realistic. Women get painted as the “evil bitch” on the internet so often, even when they’re actually the victims of something. I mean imagine if Dixie d’amelio and Noah beck (tik tok stars who are dating) went live and it was revealed that Noah was cheating on Dixie in the live. If Dixie had a meltdown and snot came out of her nose and she threw stuff at him, i don’t doubt that the internet would still find a way to villainize or meme her despite her actually having been the victim in this situation. A tik tok star does something embarrassing? that’s easy bait for ppl to make fun of even if it’s the dude in the wrong.
@@plummuff i really do get your point because women's emotions are always mocked, but to say that she loses a sponsorship over it is not good plotting. there would be such backlash over any memeing of it that the cruelty and mockery could hardly be considered the dominant response, and dropping her would cause more public outcry. it just wouldn't be good business practice, which is what makes that unbelievable to me

I like how in "She's all that" Zacks sister when she was presenting Laney she said "May I present the new,not improved but different Laney." She didn't say "looks better" or "new and improved" instead she just called her different than how she usually looks. She didn't try to make her feel ashamed by the way she looks, it's not liked she looked bad anyway its just the way how people perceived her. I have lots of respect for the sister👍

They also remark that the reason Zack was against Laney being the bet wasn't that she was ugly but that she was weird and unapproachable. He says just that.
Yeah but she did make fun of her for not tweezing and for wearing glasses(which ig she just stops needing after the makeover scene because we never see her put in contacts). I also hated the makeover, since even if they say she's not "improved, but different" it doesn't change the fact that it's still reinforcing the tired tropes of 1) women needing to get rid of their glasses to be beautiful and 2) women needing to get rid of their individuality to fit into conventional feminine beauty standards for the sake of attracting a guy. She looked perfectly fine before.

At this point, I'm fully convinced they chose to remake this movie because they thought it would be a safe premise for Addison to do considering her acting range while they could capitalize on the nostalgia trend and lure viewership. The original film was a safe movie that didn't demand a lot of emotional stakes compared to other movies, and this movie has even less stakes, is the safest of safe premises, and it doesn't require Addison to do any real method acting beyond what she's familiar with. Even with all these things, it's still a bland, unfortunate film.

i hate movies like this because the whole point of Pygmalion (that this trope is largely based on) is that the person who is made over DOESNT END UP with the person who makes them over. they grow past them and realize they can have value on their own even tho the other character “made them.” if this movie had ended with the guy thriving (not with Addison Rae) it would’ve been so much better.

Kind of reminds me of the star is born films, One more powerful makes another rise up, but she thrives beyond him as he sinks lower.
The original film actually had more diversity. Notice how in the remake, everybody is light skinned, even the characters of African descent. The Indian best friend is the darkest person in the whole movie and she's not even as dark as some of the characters were in the original movie. At least in the original they weren't afraid to show black people with dark skin.

Interesting that in this trope, men have to get rid of something that hides their face (-> facial hair) while women have to hide their face even more (-> make up). A man is considered hot when we can see his face better. A woman is considered hot when she changes her whole face with make up.

Also, it takes a narcissist to think that they are actors and can skip steps to get roles just because they have social media followers. I understand why people would be irritated by that. 10 years ago, no one would have batted an eye about that. But we live in a day and age where people are tired of seeing undeserving people getting what they want, just because they're rich and pretty.
Ironically enough, this is literally the plot of this movie. Just because you are popular on social media doesn't mean that you are worth more than any other person, and should be treated differently.

to be fair, her costuming is quite literally just how Addison dresses. there's a lot of memes about how the way she dresses like a 30 year old - a lot of cardigans and the like, which is cute, but.. it's hard to believe she's got as many followers as she does.
i was more annoyed about how they gave us "teenage boys" with perfectly maintained scruff/facial hair. no 18 year old is going to have perfectly maintained and tailored facial hair, and it ages their cast even more

I honestly wish we could get teen movies similar to how Legally Blonde, Mean Girls and Clueless are. Its like in the 1980s to the 2000s people actually tried to more interesting for the target audience yet now nobody really cares to make an effort. To All the Boys I Loved Before is by far the best teen movie I have seen in the modern day which is really sad because if that series can be good then why can't more go on a similar path. I kinda feel like misogyny has played a big role into the downfall of teen movies, the whole ideology that teens more specifically women will take shit movies and actually enjoy them which is why the Kissing Booth and After even became a thing but nobody with taste actually enjoys those films. There is a reason why classic teen movies or chic flicks are still watched and talked about today, its because they are actually good and are timeless. I just wish more directors would start listening to the target audience instead of thinking this is trash we would like.

Another good teen movie of recent would be The Half of It. It uses the trope of soulmates really well and feels so much more mature than movies like He’s all that and so on.

I think teen romcoms from the 80s-2000s were also better because, excluding nostalgia, everything felt very genuine and realistic. Even Clueless, which had a popular girl as the main character, made her likable and relatable to an extent. He’s All That, Kissing Booth and After all feel disconnected from reality while also trying too hard to make the characters relatable.
Horrible film. Tried to be a ‘hardcore party’ film without ever taking the full plunge. Safe, basic & unmemorable. Two main chatacters weren’t funny.

honestly something that would’ve been different would be if the bet was for him to turn her into a geek. like, her boyfriend does something that pisses the geeks off and they decide to make a bet to make her fall in love with one of them. Since Padget is social media famous and seeks validation from strangers and has a shitty boyfriend, it wouldn’t be too out of reach to imagine that if an artistic guy like Cameron (minus the not like other boys thing) comes along and decides to make her his “muse” that she would fall. She ends up falling in love with Cameron because he pays attention to her and validate her the same way her followers do
Not to mention it would draw attention to the “nice guy” problem that teenage girls/young women deal with. Solid idea.

it's really funny how netflix is trying to "aglorithmize" hits and looking at this on paper, I can see why they would be so confident this would work -- it's a 90s remake (nostalgia!), it features a tiktok star (she's popular on one platform so of course she'd be popular on the other), there's a shallow critique of social media (so it's not a regular rom com, it's a smart rom com) -- and yet, they forgot about crucial aspects that make a film good or at least memorable like a good script, good casting, good costume design, etc.

That's what Hollywood does. In the original version, the girl was "ugly" cuz she wore overalls, a ponytail and glasses.
Padget’s wardrobe in particular made it really hard for me to focus on the movie because she’s dressed like someone who ran a fashion blog in 2013 thinks the kids today would dress. She has a few pieces that are cute and on trend, but they’re juxtaposed by dated pieces that feel too old for the character. In a time where thrifting and “vintage” styles are all the rage there’s no excuse for a “poor” character you’re trying to establish as a popular trend setter to look like that.
Is there a scene where shes not wearing pink? Is Netflix still colour coding their characters instead of, you know. Giving them an actual sense of style

I’m sorry but “croquem-douche” was the worst thing I’ve ever heard and I loved it wholly.
I have to disagree with "these films are catered young adults"... They are absolutely not! They are catered to the 9-13 year old maybe 14 year old people. Younger Gen Z older Gen Alpha. The kids who want to grow up so badly and think that being a teenager is filled with parties, good hair, skin (even though they tried to say all teens deal with breakouts) I genuinely thought that being a teenager was really all the hype until I became one.
Yeah, this movie gives me Disney Original Movie vibes, as it, over the top, plays HEAVY into old worn stereotypes that don't really exist, extremely painfully simple plot that after you get older makes you go "wait none of that made sense", and fantasy fulfillment with big parties, stylish friends/clothes, how easy it is to get a boy to like you, etc.

I've heard that so many times on comment threads for teen movies! I lived a sheltered life as a teen so I kinda accepted that wouldn't be my experience, yet I was still surprised to hear others had similar experiences.
It makes me feel that we really need to move away from these common teen movie tropes.
As a person in the younger Gen Z demographic, most of my classmates would most definitely cringe really hard at this movie. Most of us (At least in my school) have our own style (cottagecore, vintagecore, emo/alt etc.), and most of us wouldn't wear what this remake has to offer.
The only people I see wearing this, is the cocky "TRIES TO ACT COOL" "TRIES TO BE 19 YEARS OLD" "TRIES TO BE TIKTOK STAR" kind of girls - I do go to a girl's school, so I don't really have an input on what boys wear, but from what I remember before going to an all girls school, is that the boys dress REALLY casually.

The OG influencers. People who pay people like Addison to promote their product. There are children who I know that are very young Gen Z and older GEN alpha Who would watch this and think “yeah this is cool!”. Besides I’m calling it right now, Everyone is talking smack about the 2010s fashion and how ridiculous we looked. But how the fashion cycle is going… A lot of what Addison is wearing is probably what a lot of people are going to want to wear pretty soon. Not necessarily you or your friends, but the majority of people who just see what’s on the Mannequin.

Why does Hollywood insist on casting Tik Tok stars in nearly ALL of their projects now?! This movie makes "Attaway General" look like an Emmy contender in comparison!
They clearly don't want to pay actual actors or promote things properly so Tiktok stars are comparatively cheaper and have a built in fan base. Netflix is being lazy and for as much money as they make it's pathetic how they're cutting corners like this

You know, something that bothers me personally is i feel like there’s a point to the makeover trope that goes over people’s heads. An attractive person who wants to be an outcast and doesn’t want to be trendy will be an outcast. Laney was an outcast by choice because she didn’t like what she saw with the popular kids. She didn’t dress for style she dressed for function, she hid behind plain slightly oversized glasses. And she wasn’t confident in her body, but in her mind. Her makeover was mental, as they usually are, just like devil wears prada.
And still today, so many kids dress the same, it’s not nerdy or weird to watch anime anymore, but there is still an in crowd and an out crowd. Idk what it’s based on these days but i taught at a high school, you see it.

I’ve been seeing people criticizing movies with makeover scenes lately, saying how unnecessary they are and it seems like everyone is misunderstanding that these scenes always serve a purpose to the plot. They’re not just silly filler material to pad the runtime or to make an “ugly duckling” into a beautiful swan. I also want to point out, because the scene from “Not Another Teen Movie” was used in this video and many other arguments against “She’s All That”, Laney was NOT supposed to be ugly he called her scary and unapproachable because of how stand-off ish she was. The makeover is just so she won’t feel or look like an outcast at Preston’s party.

thought the same with Addison’s acting. She seems to be playing herself, so it isn’t that bad in the not so emotional moments. Her acting flaws are shown through the emotional parts. It was kinda funny to see her pretend to cry. She could probably continue acting if she played similar characters.
I also thought it was odd how Cameron willingly let Padgett cut his hair that short, especially when you consider that he looked pretty worried before she did it. It was implied that she, his sister, and his friend convinced him to go along with it, but they could have used it for his character development to show him coming out of his shell or something

I am kinda surprised that you didn’t mention Laney (played by Rachel Leigh Cook) who was the main lead of the original 1999 version & who is playing the single mom of the female lead in the 2020 Netflix version. I am wondering if Laney was supposed to have this simple / boring cameo or if it was a hint that the she actually ended up in marrying Zack but got devorced later (which would be sad but interesting turn of the original movie). Sadly they didn’t give her any important scene - which is why (I assume) you didn’t mention her cameo in your review. Either way, the new 2020 version SUCKS big time (I hated everything about it) & Netflix should promise to never ever do a teenager movie remake again. 👍🏻

As a teen who wants to be a director and create my own movies when I’m older it almost physically hurts how awful and messy modern teen films are. i would actually have liked that the reason he's unpopular is mainly because he is mean, and not his appearance. The creep factor could have been used with his photography, but they didn't use it well... We kinda see that at the beginning of the movie, the way he shames his little sister, how he constantly provokes Jordan and the popular guys...I would have loved that despite of looking superficial, the tiktok girl is actually sweet, whereas he is really sort of mean and that's the reason why he's unpopular.

Then why on earth an influencer would wear a wardrobe so iconic for those years. The sandals, the dresses, even the eos. I was like “wait but those things today are almost a meme”. And it’s not like the entire movie universe looked like a disney 2010’s teen movie because the sister had a decent couple of outfits and she had the curtain bangs and all that. And even the nice friend of padge wear nice fits, so it didn’t make sense to me at all

Imagine if the guy was actually some happy guy, who loves fashion but is always dressed unconventional (like harper from wizards of waverly place). Because of his colourful style everyone sees him as a loser. Then Padget picks him for the bet, they start talking and eventually become friends (JUST FRIENDS). Padget will teach him how to take care of his body and the guy could show her another side of fashion (bc of her followers she would be stressed to dress any different than trendy) but also how to accept truly how you are. And eventually Padget would be the one who get a metamorphosis, in the way how she acts and in the way how she dresses.
At the end they are great friends and go second hand shopping.

to be fair when it comes to big western media like hollywood, it's only fairly recently that they actually try to cast older teenagers/early 20s young adults that can still pass as teenagers. even in early 2000s or late 1990s, only a handful of actors playing teenagers were teenagers/not much older than teenagers, and many of them were child star graduates (e.g. lindsay lohan).
Honestly, the original film was pretty bad. There really was no need to remake something silly like She’s All That. It was such a moment in time, but it was a fun teen film and not meant to be Oscar-worthy. Addison Rae making over a unpopular hipster-looking “geek”, it’s been done to death. I would love to see her do a horror film.
well back in the 1990s it was popular storyline. Sure it's cringe now but it's a classic that everyone makes fun of. He's all that was just netflix making trash to get publicity.
Likewise, the original was a cheesy, watchable movie, but it seemed aware of its own silliness. Matthew Lillard and Rachael Leigh Cook were the best parts of the remake, and they weren't even reprising their original roles.
It wasn't trying to be an Oscar winning hit, sweetie. It was a silly teen movie with a storyline which felt relatable for some at the time. Fun is allowed to exist.

At least execute it well, but the directors couldn't even do that even though they literally have the blueprint but failed to copy the things that were decent or made sense in the original.
So true, She's All That was subpar even for its time especially since there had been other actually good teen movies around that time with a similar storyline. Instead of rehashing old tropes and trying to 'update' them, it would be better to spend the time and money making something new and relevant (and good).

For another lesbian relationship about young people that is presented in a non-fetishistic way is from the 2008's 90210 reboot. While the show overall is ahem... not good (well it's a CW show, you might want to grade on a curve), there's this arc between Adrianna and Gia that is very well developed and engaging. Pretty good considering when it came out and the overall writing talent on that show.
I also gotta contribute with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which showed one of the first depictions of a queer woman couple ever on television and it wasn't sexualized or treated any different than any other couple on the show. Even though it's such a cult classic tv show, it's still underrated in terms of the mainstream audience, a lot of people haven't even heard about it.
Tons of shows and movies that people loved years after Buffy aired, were directly inspired or even taken and copied from Buffy and it deserves respect for being the first to do many things, such as a non sexualized lesbian couple. Always funny seeing people reacting to the show and think some aspects and themes of the show has been overdone in media or cheesy, when Buffy was the first one to do it and everyone else just copied it later. Buffy has had such huge cultural impact.

Adrianna's girl group phase when she realises she's bi and has a bunch of new female friends is my absolute favourite bit of the show, shame it doesn't last that long :(

90s movies still make me feel warm n nostalgic..even if She's all that wasn't one of the epic teen romances of the 90s it has an unmatched charm to the present one..
Something that should also be added to the whole race thing is that the mean girl character (Played by Madison Pettis) is also a woman of color (She's biracial, being half black and half white). I do personally think that out of all the characters that Alden's wardrobe is the best because it does show her as being outlandish and her superficial nature. I would also add that The Great Gatsby costumes were pretty great in my opinion. The actors, specifically Madison Pettis, Tanner Buchanan, Matthew Lillard, Annie Jacob, Myra Molloy, and Peyton Meyer (But BOY did they age him up when he's actually just 22) were all great (Although, Addison Rae was definitely the weakest actor of the cast). As for the rest of the film, I agree with you completely. I ended up watching it because I was visiting family and one of my younger cousins was watching it. It was truly dumb. Why did Madison Pettis have to waste her talents on this crap?

This is what is most laughable about this situation is that they were able to cast the Madison Petty but put her as a side character for someone who doesn't have an ounce of experience in acting. They could've made addison be the mean girl or the best friend so that her first acting experience wouldn't ruin the movie and would give her a chance to learn more from the more talented actors around her
@@bouchrafakher I agree, but imo the problem is that there's a lot of kids (I'm talking about proper kids, not teenagers) that follow these stars and have a hard time distinguishing what's fiction and what is reality. I always see hundreds of comments under movie clips and such asking things like "is this real??? She's mean!!", so since the kids followers are many many not properly followed by adults that can explain things, casting her as the mean girl could hurt her online career. But this is just my view on this.
I liked your commentary. I feel like the DCOM movie Geek Charming did a better job with their storyline and characters using this trope (popular girl and outcast boy) It wasn’t perfect, but for a lower budget made for TV movie the clothing, acting, and writing are superbly better👌

However, I have to say that I, having never watched she's all that as a kid/teenager, recently watched it for the first time and still immensely enjoyed it. No character (well, maybe beside Taylor) felt like a cardboard cutout to me - it was genuinely enjoyable to watch them, they felt human.
