Agree with everything you said. I also hated the romance. Why would I want her and Gabriel to get together when he has a super nice girlfriend that he just cheats on? Is that supposed to be romantic? Why would someone want such a guy?
To be honest, when the scene of Gabriel and Emily kissed, I fast forward it, I can't even handle to see that. Camile is such lovely woman, Emily should know that. Freakin ! Not even romantic
Reminds me of Anna and the French Kiss, except the girlfriend the main male characters cheats on isn’t exactly the nicest- she was still the victim and yeah the book is just awful.
I actually thought that the show was going to be smart about Gabriel (like the only thing they would do properly) and send him away. Given that there is no way to twist their relationship into something ok, unless they make his girlfriend a mass murder cheater. But no, they do a “twist” and keep him. WHO on this Earth is team Gabriel? He is a douche! (and not a shower one)
Emily seems like that one rich girl in high school who majored in fashion merchandising and came back from a semester in Paris having only learned how to say Bonjour and Merci but never stops talking about how "In Paris they..."
my favorite character was this ginger receptionist (?) at the restaurant who said "no, YOU reverse the dates". he was seething with passive agression and i loved his little smile. that's how i feel about emily most of the time
Same! Its like girl you moved to a new country and don't even bother to check the way date is written and im supposed to believe you are a working adult
The part when he switch to french, with his little smile when he said "bonsoir madame" is really great. The quintessential spirit of a parisian receptionist. x)
It’s so sad to see a small designer like Gabrielle Chanel who has tragic childhood and went through a lot of challenges to present mobility in women fashion to have people wearing something from her fashion house and made it look like it’s something that just created for no reason. Because it’s really hard to do that
I think it was in part because 1. she wears so much of it instead of just using one item per outfit as a statement piece and 2. there's no unity to what she wears and everything clashes, and when your pieces don't work together, it cheapens your whole outfit in general.
@@maramardhiah Not me thinking that Coco Chanel made chanel this WHOLE motherFing time🤦🏻♀️💀🤚🏽 cuz I have NO idea bout fashion. Edit: I googled her name and I'm dumber than I thought
@@maramardhiah don't feel sorry for her, she became a nazi supporter and spy during world War 2 but managed to erase that history at the end of the war and remained a celebrated designer until her death. I like her fashion but she definitely wasn't a good person, she actually gave names of Jews to the nazis who were deported and sent to their death because of her. Yet even today she is one of the most celebrated designers and held in high regard, it's sad.
I was not a fan of the glorified cheating. I’m sure that people in France don’t glorify it either. Just because you live in Paris doesn’t mean you can hurt others.
@Lisa It is a common stereotype in America to think Europeans having mistresses/affairs is normal. Or another stereotype is that sex with no strings attached is also common. I think they were born because of the whole "romantic language" and "paris is the city of love" jargon and movies.
This show is basically American fantasy of coming to Europe and becoming some massive sensation to natives just because you're American. It's almost like American fantasy of coming to Asia and becoming sensation over being American. Or coming to Africa and... you know what i'm starting to see pattern here.
That's so true haha It reminds me of Sex and the City where it was a big deal being a "New Yorker" and an American and people all over the world were so enthusiastic about meeting one.
not to judge Americans, but yeah, they do paint themselves as the big deal. little do they know only they and third world countries who are sold the American dream. the people who Americans impose themselves to ? not so much.
It's funny too, because as an American that has travelled a lot in Europe, that is not at all what happens. Like people ask questions, but no more so than when I say I am from Canada (dual citizen and sometimes it is better to be Canadian when travelling). And if there was any country where people really did not give two craps about what country I was from it was France. And I found most of the time, people there were NOT happy if I didn't even try to speak French. And when I lived in Denmark for a year, no one really cared. And if they did it was not really positive (not that it was negative either). It was more just questions about US health care or politics and why do we care so much about football. And then it became old news after a conversation or two.
I sadly agree I live in America and it's embarrassing to have unmature people who think a contrary is a certain way it's like some of us think South Korea is like K pop and it's sad because I used to think that but know I learn about more about South Korea and what's it's downfalls and know it's not just kpop. I'm happy though when my family went to Germany we respect them and didn't expect them to know english we were quite and we try to learn German so we can talk to them a little bit if we need help.
Emily’s character is so unlikeable. She doesn’t have any flaws, never gets upset (didn’t cry after breakup with long term bf), too prim. Ugly Betty was better because she was human and relatable
I mean she's unlikable because she has plenty of flaws. She's selfish, lazy, uses people and she is bad at her job. The issue this series has is that her flaws never have consequences for her. Everyone around her takes her shit and lets her get away with everything so she never grows as a character.
....but she is the main character? I don’t huh? Y’all are so confusing “she reminds me of an American 🙄” well she is American???? I don’t get it make it make sense
@@beckywiththegoodhair5244 no luv, they're talking about the stereotypical girl in real life or in EVERY coming of age movie ever whose only personality trait is being the main character. Literally has no other propuse, skills or qualities, she's just "the perfect main character"
I think she’s very lucky because of her famous father. Plus she is beautiful. But she absolutely has no talent but I still like her usually. But this show is the worst of them all.
this is why I just cut out the middle man and say the actual name of the month, like, it's not that hard?? and is so much less confusing for everyone??? cause like, if you are from the us and you give the date in another country, then they get to worry abt if you're doing it right and if you're from another country in the us, then it's the reverse! it's such a mess, honestly
She is a mixture of the worst traits of Blair and Serena. Blair’s whiny and stubborn attitude without her intelligence and Serena’s questionable relationship with men without her social skills/openness.
the way they kept making the french men clingy and overbearing and overstepping of emily's boundaries felt so strange. like she was always in the right and everyone else was terrible.
The very definition of a Mary Sue. If your main character is written as infallible and perfect in every way, the side characters can only become more flawed. It's lazy writing at its worst.
This! Every single person in this show is a caricature. They paint unrealistic awful claims about how french people are and then say that Emily is supposed to be "appreciative" of their culture. At that point I would prefer being insulted to my face rather than watching such a bad show that portrays a culture so badly.
I hate how she takes photos of people without their permission (often mocking them) and then posts it on her instagram with thousands of followers. Rude much.
Mirna Garcia I live in the U.K. It’s definitely day/month/year. Yes it’s the language but you tend to have a choice between English U.S and English U.K which not only have a different date format but also different spelling for certain words.
same, i'm from turkey and all these things americans use like feet rather than cm, lbs rather than kg, reversed dates etc confuse me af! first of all day/month/year makes more sense than month/day/year (don't attack me lol) because you're going from smaller to bigger. americans don't care about the rest of the world and judge everything that doesn't make sense to them so lol whatever
i have no idea, it was a realllly weird plot point. it added literally nothing at all to the story and it was never mentioned again after it happened, it seemed like they were trying to overcompensate for the fact that there was no shock factor in the show
it’s legal in europe, so probably just for the shock factor for american audiences. the whole plot line was pointless and weird.. like wow- the age of consent is different in other countries, i had no idea!!
Does anyone find it revolting that she slept with a 17 year old? I could not watch another second after that. it's absolutely disgusting The show just confirmed her age as of s.2 is 29, which means there was AT LEAST a 11 year age gap. wtf??
If Emily was a male and did that with a 17 year old female she would’ve been shut down immediately too which just makes it so much worse. JUST BECAUSE SHES AN AMERICAN WOMAN DOESNT MEAN SHE CAN DO ANYTHING SHE WANTS AND ITS OK
@@Salsa4268 It depends. If you didn't know that the girl or boy was 17, no one will call you a child molester. Some 17-year olds look much older than they are and some lie about their age. I had a girl like that in scool and I can assure you that no one saw her as a "victim" or the men she slept with as molesters.
@@zorrosdog6557 True, but the show is probably for a younger audience as in young adults or maybe teenagers, so they might get an impression that that’s ok and as a platform that can encourage people to do things this should not be one of them. But I do get where your coming from and I agree
"The customer is always right" turned me off immediately from the show. I tried to continue but I just couldn't finish. It was like watching a Karen in Paris
I’m just mad about the fact that she hooked up with the ex boyfriend of a girl who was so sweet to her and didn’t even seem to care?! So much serena energy
The bérets. The f*cking bérets! In my 35 years of being French, I've never seen anyone wear (so many) bérets. You'll spot an American girl like Emily just by the béret she's wearing.
Shiiiit there are some insanely talented fanfic writers out there. Like, Isolation by Bexchan is one of the most beautiful pieces of fiction I have ever read!! Ahhhh
@@electricbop Well it's just very different form the American one. In Europe is more like "this is what we offer, if you don't like it then go to another restaurant" while in America is more like "the costumer is always right". Of course we try to be as respectful as possible but it's very different than the fake-smiling waiter who ask you every five minutes if everything it's okay. It's just two very different points of view. Sorry if my english is incorect i'm still learning hahaha
the only decent part of the show is when Sylvie makes a speech at Emily where she basically says, "you come here, make no effort to learn the language, try to shove your american habits down our throat then wonder why none of us want to be around you." (@ 4:47) but of course they all had to fall for her quirky american ignorance in the end. This girl ends the show with fewer french skills than Eloise
A perfect example of this is also the scene where she mails the rules to all of them and one is about relationships at work. I'm not from France but from Germany, but when somebody here would try to say that to me even while I don't have a relationship with a colleague I would literelly say that we aren't in America where this MAYBE is normal (I watched some videos where it's said, that it is normal to have this rule in America) Like - Literally no one cares here as long as it doesn't affect your work.
@@KaliqueClawthorne I'm french yeah people really don't care at all. I've even met married people who were colleagues or met while they worked for the same company. It really doesn't matter as long as it's not a boss-employee thing because then there's abuse of power concerns but I mean people still don't care that much honestly. This rule never made any sense to me. It's very weird to try to control people's private life when it's completely irrelevant. If it lessens productivity then yeah eventually you can file complaints but other than that, it's so weird. You don't owe your employer to stop yourself from pursuing a good relationship. That has nothing to do with them.
@@ArturGlass.C ^There is this video out there from an American living in Germany who describes why Walmart failed to come to Germany .... The rule about relationships was actually one of the reasons, because based on our laws about work you can't get fired or other things because you have a relationship with a workmate. There is this lesbian couple at my old school. Nobody really knew they were together till they told us AFTER we left school. They weren't married or something like that. Everybody kind of knew it but ... nobody cared. Or rumours about other relationships. It was just a story-thing for us as schoolkids but ... not something important.
i absolutely love that part too, the only thing about that part i hate is that Emily took nothing in, proceeds to invite her boss to a party, even though she said no, and walks out like she won, when in reality she's just stupid, and Sylvie actually gave her truth, and she blatantly ignored it
Amen! In the first episode when she’s wearing those Loubotion print shoes they looks stunning and then when the rest of the outfit was revealed I just 🤢 the snakeskin skirt DID NOT go with it. Very all over the place.
I'll let you in on a little secret. The reason Emily acts so entitled, irresponsible, and generally terrible with zero self awareness is probably because the creators of the show are just like her.
@@elise6970 the entire show is about her americanising the french people? And claiming America is superior? And the show makes America feel superior? I very clearly hate the show because it’s American washed and annoying, certainly not satire as you’re claiming it to be. If it mocked Emily so much - then why doesn’t Emily change? Why do the french characters change but not Emily? It seems like you’re obsessed with the show and can’t begin fathom any criticism for it (typical of Americans)
@@elise6970 I- literally this video details every example of when she claimed Americans to be superior? Literally everything coming out of Emily’s mouth is “Americans are superior, aMerIcAn PeRsPeCtIvE”
As a french person the scene in the restaurant where she insists about sending back the steak while being so entitled was so uncomfortable... she actually represents what Europeans thinks of Americans: entitled, preachy, and hypocritical. (And I know it's not an accurate view of all Americans, it's just what media often show us)
I thought it was weird for a few reasons 1) she doesn’t like have any remorse and the whole action isn’t likable at all 2) a lot of people have talked about how when even the chef messes up a dish people have too much anxiety so they just eat it so idk why they would include it bc it wasn’t even relatable 3) i’m pretty sure she tried to order in french and SHE messed up once again showing her as disrespectful
Sending back food is somewhat of a normal thing here but like it’s rare that a chef messes up and you aren’t supposed to be rude about it either like she was normally if I ever have had food sent back it’s because the waitress asked me if something was wrong with my order not because I demanded something be cooked longer etc.
@Dee Ayy Why Night Productions the thing is, generally the waiter asks you how cooked you wants your meat. They always ask beforehand actually, that's why this problem rarely happens
Mindy should’ve been the main character. Her story is actually amazing, leaving her rich family to come babysit in Paris, her love for learning languages - also they could’ve explored so much about what being Asian in a European city is like. Can we give up with the white main character norm I’m bored (I’m copyrighting this in case Netflix decides to steal my idea and ruin it)
That would’ve been so much more interesting! As an Asian girl myself who loves France and is in college majoring in French to be an French teacher or English teacher in France, it would’ve been so cool to see an Asian in a European city. I guess that’s why it’s annoying watching Lily Collins who I really like, play such a ridiculous role and not adapting to the French culture. When I went to France, I didn’t speak any English and practiced my French with everyone I spoke with. I hate that this show didn’t incorporate more of the French language, but instead solidifies the fact that Americans push being American on everyone.
@@poshspicebabe right?! I’ve seen French people react to this show and felt second hand embarrassment. I’m studying French and my grandparents have been to France and she said that they appreciate when an effort is made to use the language. This show seems to push this idea that being sooo American in a “stiff stick in the mud” French culture is soooo *~quirky~*
The last point about the older boss being sexy and stylish shows one big difference between Americana and French culture. In France, there are many older women being celebrated as charismatic beauties up to their 60's. If you watch French movies and TV shows, the sultry and self-assured older woman is a recurrent character and no one bats an eye at the idea that a younger man might find her alluring. I mean even the French president's wife is way older than him. Whereas in the US only the young can be sexy, if you believe what you see on screens.
I think because of capitalism. In America they shame you for looking old and having wrinkles so they sell women all these gimmicky products to feed into their insecurities
we can go further: imagine a young french girl who doesn't speak any English comes to the US and in her native language she tried to make the office more french.
@@monalisachakrabarty3260 I do think that Emily was kinda stupid for not trying to learn any French but please don’t compare these 2 situations. The fact is that English is the universal language and almost every country learns it as their second language whereas French is not 🤭
@@drinkmoreagua8984 yes you are right but the character emily is so irritating that i completely hate every aspect of her I somehow watched the whole season just for glamour and paris
@@drinkmoreagua8984 maybe but I think it is commonly known (at least here in France we know that for a fact) that French people are very bad at English. Of course some people will speak it, like people in some hostels, and she was in Paris so there may be more people who speak English than in other parts of the country (because, tourism). But there is also a lot of people who don't get English at all. I think I know more people who don't speak English than people who does. Even I, I can read English, write English, but I am unable to speak it. Maybe it would work with other countries, I don't know. But as a French person, the idea that someone can come to our country thinking everyone will understand her because she speaks an universal language... Yeah I would stay in the back and wait for the desillusion to come.

As a French man, the one thing that immediately seemed ridiculous about this show was how all these Parisian men are obsessed with this American girl. Americans are already seen as sloppy, rude, ignorant tourists in France in general - Paris is worse (Parisians have a reputation for being snobbish and elitist). There isn't an endless stream of educated, wealthy, attractive Parisian men who are just drooling after American women who they see as stupid, loud and embarrassing. It's weird that the show is able to portray her coworkers seeing Emily that way, but it doesn't translate into the way all these men see her. This isn't to say that it's accurate to see Americans that way - and I've personally dated more Americans than French people! - but it's not accurate to pretend Parisians aren't like that, and I feel like it's part of this American egoism where Americans feel like everyone all over the world is obsessed with them and sees them as desirable and important, when that's just how those Americans see themselves.
@@megansampson5445 She is beautiful! But so is every other woman in the cast (Camille probably moreso), so it fails to make me believe she's supposed to be particularly and uniquely pretty.
i dont think its egoism. quite the opposite. its escapism because its so impossible. its a fantasy that they want their audience to indulge in. the idea that they could travel to paris, go to fancy events and attract a chef that looks like a male model but also grab the attention of a multitude of handsome sensual cultured french men. the point is that its an unattainable fantasy to most american girls, not that its plausible for an american girl to attract in as many handsome men as emily did.
to make matters worse, excité is more typically used in French to refer that someone is 'excited' in terms that they are horny. she literally said "I am very horny to be here." nice.
Being from Serbia, the thing that really annoyed me was the scene with the Serbian gold-digger supermodel stripping naked on the street for a perfume commercial in front of a bunch of men - I thought we left hypersexual stereotypes about Slavic and Eastern European women in the past, where they belong. Just because Emily's character preached about it later in the same scene doesn't make it any better or less cringy.
Preach. Being slavic myself i really hate these kinds of stereotypes. Sure melania and trump is one case, but that doesn't mean all of us are like this
I am American and I had no idea this was even a thing. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, it's good to know what stereotypes are out there so we can be vigilant against them.
emily is the epitome of the upper-middle class American white woman lol "let ME educate YOU because my way is always the best way". also why the heck did they make her character so "innocent" to sexual double entendres when she is clearly no stranger to hook-up culture?
The thing with Emilia Clarke in "Me Before You", is that her fashion was intentional. People comment in the movie that she dresses like an eclectic old woman, and also acknowledge how weird she is for liking black and yellow bee striped tights. Emily is meant to look fashionable and "hip", and the lack of self awareness makes it worse.
no emily was definitely meant to look awful, pierre cadault called her a "ringgarde", remember? Cause she IS a ringgarde, who spends heavily on expensive pieces she don't know how to style, and would probably style it with something from Pretty Little Thing, in real life. That's what the show got wrong - there was nothing wrong with her having a few chanel pieces and bags here and there, but shouldn't have been so much and it should only have been accessories.
TW mentions of assault.... I also read that in the book Emilia's character (forgot her name sorry!) dresses like that because she was raped once and thinks that if dresses the way she does it would never happen again
Idk why but when i heard the name “Emily in paris” I thought it was a “The devil wears prada” spin-off or sum... like emily from the movie that couldn’t go to paris finally gets the chance. But no
I hate that they've tried to portray the French as lazy for doing things like... opening a little later. Like we won't consider for a second here that Americans might be overworked? It's not like France is falling apart because people aren't putting in enough effort. Anyway every time I've been to another country I try to give out vibes that are exactly opposite of Emily. I never want to be disrespectful to another culture, different doesn't mean worse.
Yes!! I’m an American living in Germany for four years now, and Europeans really value that time for their families and their own well being. Businesses are usually closed on Sundays too. They’re just not as overworked and obsessed with being open every hour of the day to make money.
I was so mad at how they kept nitpicking the French culture and just basically criticizing it like girl you live here do more than just eating croissant and taking pictures of strangers lmao
@Sophia Leydon that doesn’t seem realistic. Adapting to a culture is a process and not instant. Plus the French were marketing to America so that’s why her perspective was needed but it was rejected.
@@entropyanonymous3385 because of taking a while to adapt to the culture. But it makes sense because she didn't have any time to study up on the culture before going to France
i felt like this show was made 10 years ago and forgotten about, and then someone found it and released it now. everything about it was seriously out of date and i cringed all the way through. also all of her social media posts were AWFUL and that’s supposed to be her job?? and thousands of people are following her? i couldn’t even make it past 3 episodes
That is just Netflix now. They have gotten very lazy with their curation with the exception of working on a few larger projects but most have been with intl content
Agree the whole thing is SO unrealistic!!! She starts off with 240 followers and gets about 1600 in like two days from posting a few pouty selfies?! WOULDN'T HAPPEN lol!
all those french stereotypes, it was like watching a smoking baguette with a beret and a moustache who's cheating on his wife. one of the many infuriating things: people smoking in an enclosed public space and all over the place: that's illegal since 2008!
I also wanted to add that Emily said that her parents weren’t wealthy. She mentioned that her mom was a teacher so it honestly made no sense that she had no many expensive pieces in her wardrobe. (Both my parents were teachers in NYC, so trust me I know lol) She was a twenty something, who is still beginning her career. Her wardrobe made no sense!! There were so many cute pieces but they were styled sooo wrong. Camille had the best wardrobe in my opinion!
camille had the french wardrobe. emily had idk what wardrobe. it isn’t american and it’s like french runway but not really. i’m 21 and still can’t save up for basic accessories.
But she was styled to look kind of tacky. You can't think the Eiffel tower shirt from the first day at work was meant to be taken seriously. I agree that the amount of designer pieces made no sense, though. [edit: misspelling]
spokeforhours oh and that little eiffel tower thing on her bag that made the designer scream basic. i’m no parisian but even i would scream basic and tacky at that.
Emily's cross cultural attitude is horrific. Arriving at another continent and forcing her language, culture and customs on everyone there...? That's not just a bad character trait, that's highly problematic. It seems like this series is promoting some cultural superiority of Americans.
Agreed. It would be fine if this was framed in the show as a bad thing. A show about an annoying American learning to be more respectful could be fun. However they barely recognized how bad her traits are.
@@ailemasvega That would have been so great for the character while delivering an actually good message. Instead, they just painted the French as the problem for being rude and stubborn (as if they are expected to change their entire culture for Emily). I think that says a lot about how the writers of this show perceive foreign cultures.
maybe it's kind of the point of the show? idk. probably trying to show how Americans literally force THEIR culture and language to every country in the world. even in the US you'll see people telling foreigners to speak in English
I think she is literally Serena of Gossip Girl cause Serena never faces any consequences for her action. She can do everything, sleeps with everyone and everybody likes her. Same for Emily here.
Yeah, she is nothing like Blair. Blair is an educated young woman, who would study French before she moves to Paris and would be able to communicate in French. Blair would have enjoyed the culture and would educate herself about the people and history of Paris and Blair would outperform everyone on her job. She would have rocked her marketing Job like noone else. Emily is infact more like Serena. Only she is lacking Serena’s charm and charisma to be this ignorant. Also Serena never was this arrogant towards other people
I am a European and this show is a perfect summary of why no one here likes stereotypical Americans lol EDIT: apparently I need to clarify, I don’t mean all Americans nor that these behaviors are exclusive to Americans I do mean that there is an attitude that America is the greatest which is not healthy. It’s not even something I blame the people for, it’s just how American schools teach. I lived there when I was younger and the school taught that America invented the car and just about every other big thing of the last century and I was shocked. I really don’t blame Americans, and Europe certainly has a ton of its own problems, I mean our tourists are also obnoxious abroad, but the big difference is that I think most Americans expect the world to adjust to them whereas here there are so many cultures we learn to adjust to eachother and keep an open mind. We are also blunt and critical of eachother and of ourselves, and I wouldn’t say most Europeans think they come from the best country in the world. I know tons of wonderful Americans, but even they often fall to this mindset. I don’t judge because in America this is what’s taught, but I do hope that Americans can recognize the issues someday as recognizing the problems is the only way to make changes for the better. I don’t hate America, I don’t even hate American culture, granted it’s not my thing but I will still be accepting of it as long as it is not required of me or others to adapt totally to it. That’s what this TV show does. It shows an American who expects everyone around her to adapt and when they do, BAM, instantly all the problems go away. In many ways it is somehow propaganda and I don’t like that the show says ‘Europeans are snotty and rude and stubborn because they won’t change everything about themselves to fit one girl’. Criticism of Europe is fine, everyone here does it all the time, however saying that if we changed to be like America all our problems would go away is plain rude and egoistic. It’s a shame.
Dulce Perea likewise, i work in an environment where a lot of ppl live and work here yet can't speak the language nor do they bother to learn it and then have the nerve to get upset when i can't help them bc idk what they're talking about. so i guess it's not just an american thing and more of ppl thing.
This show just seems like French fetishism, with an ignorant protagonist who only cares for internet appearances. I'm not going to watch it. PLEASE get Lily Collins on an Audrey Hepburn biopic!
That "customer is always right" moment is horrible. Being a jerk to food service workers makes absolutely no one look good, and if I didn't know any better I would have assumed that moment was there to set Emily up as the antagonist or prissy rich girl archetype. To think that she's supposed to be the protagonist, and a likable one at that, is mind-blowing.
It wasn’t rude. If I like my steak well done, I want to have it well done. After all I’m going to pay for it so yes, I will ask the service workers to exchange it.
@@trash8898 It wasn't even so much the fact that she asked for a new steak than the way she said it and the way the moment was presented? I trust absolutely no bitch who says "the customer is always right" out loud like that bc 10 times out of 10 that is a Karen
it's so disappointing that they turned mindy into the stereotypical "i'm asian so i can bash on asians" character because i feel like her story was genuinely interesting and the way that she adapted to french culture and cared a lot more about it than emily would have made for a better lead. but no, we just had to have another poc best friend that's a stereotype.
Emily is one of the worst protagonists in TV. She continually makes mistakes and never learns. It would be a great show if it was an American who learns about the culture and gradually becomes more involved in the culture and her fashion could represent that by becoming better throughout the show.
@@salemsmith7085 whattt! wait you should search up videos reviewing her outfits because they don’t really fit her character (they just sort of threw designer clothing on her and called it a day) and they explain it rly well! i mean it’s totally cool that you like her clothes but they aren’t it for her (at least i think so)
This show should've been called "An American Stereotype in Paris" And I hate how they frame her as if she's right for behaving like that. I've known actual french people and they absolutely would not tolerate that BS
It's honestly so annoying how she just walks in there and is appalled when some people don't speak perfect English. In France. When she can't even speak a little french.

I remember sitting in a restaurant in Paris, eating and reading a book, minding my own business, when out of nowhere this French lady at the table next to me adressed me, realised that I didn't speak French, switched to heavily accented English, only to give me a sweet compliment for my hat. So much for "French people refuse to speak English and are mean to strangers".
Also - no tears for the fiancée, no bad moments whatsoever? Girl I moved out of my country and I cried 50% of the time. There's no character development at all and she gets EVERYTHING she wants with absolutely no effort. Ugh.
Gosh I hate her guts trully...camille is sweet girl...she doesnt deserve this...Emily called Camille fake friend to Mindy behind her back but we know who the true fake friend here
I'm so glad someone pointed this out!! I thought it was weird how she got over it by posting one sad caption on Instagram and then it was like it never happened? Completely pointless to the storyline to have her go through a breakup when it gives her absolutely no character development. And she's supposed to seem loyal to him in the beginning but can't be loyal to her friend and respect their relationship. Or when she tells her work not to have unprofessional romances but then dates a client? She's hypocritical throughout the entire show
This is what confused me about the show. It tried so hard to keep that peppy facade up. Even after she got fired or learned something troubling at work, it would zoom in on her face for 5 seconds before moving on to something else
What I find extremely ironic is that Emily acts as though her social media marketing strategies are exemplary and out of the box, but throughout the series, literally all her social media posts are incredibly basic! The whole 'butter+ chocolate 💗💗' and posting pics of her drinking wine and partying- that's what everyone does. How is she any different? She literally had no reason to get famous lmao
ikr??? like she’ll post some rando’s burger and gain thousands of followers?? plus, that entreprise praised her for her ✨super original✨ post when she was just eating strawberries like wut 😀
@@_avinat they're not referring to your comment, but rather the person who wrote the show. The lack of knowledge on how social media actually works (u defo wouldn't become insta famous of a few boring basic pics) shows that that the show was probably written by some old/middle aged guy who does not interact with nor understand how teens acctually behave and has a limited/stereotypical view on how social media works.
I know many clever American friends, they really don't want Emily as their representative, they prefer Emily just say its her own point of view , not the American point of view . Her ( Emily in the show) point of view is too childish, it's embarrassing.
She complains about not fitting in but she doesn’t even try, like that whole floor and dates thing. Did she not even bother to do basic research. And she kept acting like they were huge differences but they are legit not that hard to understand.

I mean to be honest I did find that part quite realistic - I lived in Paris for several years in my early 20s and I got a lot of attention from men. That's not a humble brag - a lot of them were creepy and gross cat calling me on the street, and many of them were smarmy rich French guys who only had one agenda (especially once they found out I was English, since English women apparently have a reputation of drinking a lot and being easy). However I never once found them charming, I found them all creepy. But in Emily in Paris the offensive thing was that this constant male attention was romanticised and normalised, and Emily encouraged it or engaged in it. Even the client who sent her underwear, she challenged him but she still ultimately was flirting with him and feeling charmed by him (she just was a bit ethically conflicted). So what's unrealistic is that she only gets attention from rich white conventionally-attractive men but never gets cat called or hit on by randos in the street or indeed anyone who isn't white.
@@amstreater exactly why when I travel I’m never giving my body to these men so they don’t dare say “this American girl was easy to get in bed with “ the audacity .
you must not be an attractive young female than, because guys falling all over you if you're hot is something very realistic in every part of the world
To be fair the selling point was the whole phrase "Emily in Paris" which was meant to give the hint that this was a story set in Paris but using the 'fish out of water' trope of someone who knows nothing about the environment that they're in and the entertainment is meant to come from watching them flounder. So we got what they promised on that front. However the writers failed because that trope is meant to 1) have the 'fish out of water' character be endearing in their confusion and therefore likeable and charming and make you want to root for them and 2) have that character grow at least a little by the end of the movie or season to be less of a fish out of water because they are meant to have learnt more about their surroundings. Emily was neither likable nor did she learn to assimilate into French culture more so the use of the trope failed.
@Blablabla bruh at least she should try to learn about the culture with an open mind, and not like bash French culture and French people for any obstacles she ran into. period
I can't believe that they used Julien as the token black and token gay guy in one character. This is a whole new level of *"look how inclusive we are"*

It sucked but I still enjoyed it. It was fun trash like Wattpad, every guy she ran into kept falling in love with her! I couldn't stop screaming, "This is SUCH a TV show!" While watching it. And then I'd click the next episode. But my love for it is juxtaposed by my hate for how unrealistic it is. I wish my job would transfer me to Paris where I could just run into a hot neighbour. Plus, I know quite a bit of French and I've still never made friends with francophones in my area because my true personality can't shine through,I can't joke in French. How the hell does Emily charm all of those people, while being so insufferable? Ugh. I much preferred Camille, she was such a breath of fresh air compared to Emily.
Omg yes I relate! I also speak French and English, and while I am fluent in French, it is so hard to let my personality shine through and make jokes in the language. I always come off as serious :(
I agree. This show was clearly meant to NOT be super realistic. It’s truly a watt pad come to life. It was trash and Emily was had many horrible character traits but I still enjoyed watching it.
Dude I feel exactly the same! Camille is beautiful and down to earth, and for some reason ignorant and annoying Emily has all the dudes fauning over her. I cant figure out if I like or hate the show. The steak part hurts it’s like how American tells a real Japanese cook he is doing the sushi wrong it’s should have avocado in it or what (I love American style sushi but still....)

This is the type of movie to groom young American girls into being ignorant and self absorbed and it’s a shame bc this has been a trend for quite some time in this country

It's such a shame because Paris is so diverse so many arabs, asians and africans in the city and we hardly saw that. I'm disappointed they didn't give any hobbies or interests to Emily it seemed like all she did was be obnoxious to the french culture and horny. This show had SO much potential but I carried on watching it because we hardly get any fashion related shows anymore. Also this show really painted the french in every stereotype it could not sure how they got away with that
Well Emily's characters is pretty much the American stereotype. This show plays on that. As an American who worked in Paris, i can say ive heard several of things that were told to emily before. Its a light and fluffy show and yes Paris is extremely diverse. Its truly a beautiful city.
As someone’s who’s been to Paris, especially working in the business area it was actually surprisingly accurate with customs, non friendliness, distaste for Americans (I’m Australian thankfully but they would get annoyed at me if I said anything wrong when speaking French lol) however, it definitely did have stereotypes and mainly just didn’t explore the main characters or the side characters lives at all
@@Grace-mb8tb i felt like that was the whole point? Exploring stereotypes and breaking them up?. When I moved to Australia from France I learned the language and learned the culture and customs here, because I can’t expect a whole country to change their customs and culture for me and my family
the story is too white. First of all Paris is a city that is verry diverse. Where are the arabic people ? the people from portugal, spain ? The people that from eastern europe ? Why is there only one black person ? ya'll realise Paris and France are full of diversity. A lot of french people have parents that aren't from France.
Right? Paris is of the most diverse cities in the world. There's a whole arrondissement with Asian people! There's a whole quarter with African markets and shops. Go to Paris when Algeria, Tunisia or Morocco is playing football and you'll how crazy big the Arab population is! Etc. This is ridiculous to have a show that takes place there to be that white. But then again, this was produced by the Sex And The City's producers. They also manage to make New York the whitest city ever.

I honestly felt like this show highlighted more problems with Americans than anything. I liked watching how well they represented our lack of respect, research, and language learning when we travel and how we expect the rest of the world to conform to our morals and ways. It also highlighted our hypocrisy and flaws in some of our believes like when they discuss the American idea of happiness or work ethic.
It represented it but didn't challenge it, or at least not enough. A lot of her ignorant actions were just brushed off and therefore made it seem like her behavior was ok.
Before my first trip to Paris (prior to Covid, I was spending a couple months a year there), I made damned sure to learn what I could about the culture and to try my best to learn French, and then booked a place on the outskirts in a non-tourist area so that I could live as much like a local to learn about the true culture, not the tourist culture. I found the French people to be really nice as long as you're polite. You say "bonjour" to the bus driver or you'll get a deservedly nasty look ("bonjour" means so much more than "hello"). You say "pardon" if you accidentally step on a foot in the metro. At least makea. real effort to speak French. That effort goes a LONG way, and those who speak English there are usually very happy to help as long as you've shown a true attempt at their language. Incidentally, Americans tend to have the attitude that those who come to America should acclimate to American, yet when not Americans travel to other countries, expect those countries to acclimate to Americans.
I live pretty close to Paris and had a boyfriend there so I've spent most of my time there and this show was FULL of cliches. I don't understand why they portrayed French people being mean? I met so many people and everybody was welcoming and very polite. Not everybody smokes, in fact, smoking is forbidden inside public buildings since 2006 (or 2007?). However, I recommend everybody to go there at least for once. It is magical. The history is interesting and Paris is full of great art! Pls don't watch this show and assume people act that way. Love from Germany
I mean frech people, not always, are kinda difficult to deal with, especially the males. They are usually really full of themselves, and to me, a young 19 girl, the weren't precisely polite. They would stare shamelessly to me and my friends while we were walking down the street and also, they were really touchy and kinda molested us on a busking concert. And I say this as a fellow European. I'm from spain by the way

As a French person (also from Paris), I totally agree with everything you said. It's like they tried to make Paris like they wished it was for an American to move there, rather that how it really is. I think it would have been so much more interesting if they had been just a little more realistic.
Of course not! 😁 Why learn French when we all know that every person in France speaks fluent English with a comedic French accent? But then again, isn't that true for all the rest of the World? 😊
You can learn basic french in 30 min? Damn okay, teach me how........ because i got no clue how to even pronounce half the words in french with how they dont pronounce half the freaking letters....
Basics: Bonjour (Hello, Good day) Au revoir (Goodbye) Excusez-moi Pardon Merci S'il vous plaît (please) I feel like most Americans would be able to vaguely understand those.
@K Annie Yes, but she could on the plane, like practice a bit, and what's stopping her from practicing during the show? Like at home when she got the time, like I know they added convenient stereotypical French people who spoke English so she wouldn't have to learn any French but that just seems so cheap
i also hated how there was so much sexual content and innuendo, like they advertised it so heavily on tiktok, so i thought it would be wholesome and watched it with my parents, so then we were super uncomfy when we watched it
Yes!! I was looking for this comment. I mean it's ok to normalize talking about sex, but I think in the show there is just too much sexual content. The part were they talked about the "Tour Eiffel" disgusted me.
well that actually is described in the show as americans = emily being shocked by the love, sex affairs and romance that europeans represent :D so if you are american, this really kind of makes sense as europeans are way more open to such scenes as for example in rome/ paris / prague there are statues of naked people all over the city. we just dont care.
While I still found this a bit of guilty pleasure, it’s definitely not a favourite but it’s more like escapism. However at times I hated the writing, Emily as you said is insufferable like when she kissed Gabriel when she was friends with Camille, HIS GIRLFRIEND. I hated how they tried to romanticise the whole thing, it was NOT CUTE.
@@wonder0663 I can't seem to remember her kissing him other than the time where she didn't know he had a girlfriend, but yeah, it was definitely shitty. Like no doubt. I just wanted to point out that when they slept together Camille and what's his face weren't together technically. 😂

if she had Korean parents who moved to China before she was born, she would still be Chinese but look Korean. Just like people can look African but still be French.
At least badly written wattpad stories have some enjoyment value to them. You can make fun of the Kissing Booth or After and they can be guilty pleasures. This one is just annoying.
I don't understand how people defend this show saying it's escapism, in my escapist fantasies I at the very least look stylish and come across as intelligent. Why would anyone want to be Emily.
Emily does not need to come across as intelligent. She is the most lucky person in the world. She posts one quirky line on Instagram and everything and everyone is falling into her lap. Somehow she has all this designer clothes even though she is supposed to have only one drawer in her apartment. She never even thinks about money and she has 3 boyfriends at once. She lives in a nice neighborhood in paris. She never even sees a homeless person on the streets. She never gets tired to walk on cobblestones in high heels. And also there is no global pandemic. That's great escapism!
@@Blueeyesinthesky 100k when she lives in paris is not that much (mind the taxes in europe and the rent and cost of living in Paris). But still she could have designer clothes but where does she put them in her apartment? When Mindy moves in she asks 'can I claim a drawer' and Emily responds with 'there is only one drawer'. This woman must have a magic drawer since she is never wearing anything twice! I wish I had a magic drawer like that. This movie is not supposed to be realistic I think. It's still fun to watch.
Because she gets everything she wants and more. No need to make a character likeable or smart when you can just sheel them in plot armor and make them wear outfits that could pay the entire country’s health insurance.
I’m disappointed that she didn’t learn more French and how to dress more effortlessly by the end of the season. You’re right, she’s exactly the same person as the beginning!
THis could've been a great comedy if the show framed Emily as clearly in-the-wrong. She tries forcing the French locals to adapt around HER; rather than the other way around, but it just puts her on a downward-spiral.
Rude but unsurprising. I mean if she can Americanise the pronunciation of French words that have no American counterpart there was no way in hell she was going to even attempt to properly pronounce French names that have do an American version to the pronunciation lol. You could see that even having someone show her proper pronunciation was a lost cause in the scene where she and the boss were repeating the same thing over and over and over again. The girl is a mess but I think that was the point. I can only hope that they made her this bad so that she can grow over the course of a few seasons and have real character development because honestly there's nowhere to go but up for her it seems.
exactly, whenever i travel i make sure to pronounce names the way they’re supposed to (i have an ethnic name that’s never pronounced right too) along with words i know in their language that i add in to conversations. it’s the bare minimum
What bothered me the most was the fact that Mindy didn't exist outside of the "white girl's supportive BFF" role, and they clearly added in the "disgraced pop singer" subplot *after* casting Ashley Park (who is Korean, not Chinese) because she's a Broadway actress. And they phoned it in on her dialogue because other than existing to patiently explain French customs to Emily, she mentions she's from China and makes jokes about communist China and speaks Mandarin (with a horrible accent, sorry Ashley) and that's it. It 100% feels like Mindy was an afterthought and they made her Chinese because a PR person noticed there was only 1 non-white person in the show (in *Paris...* right...), and instead of making her Korean after hiring a Korean actress they just figured white Americans wouldn't notice. Either that or she was Chinese the whole time and they just couldn't care less about giving her proper dialogue... I don't know which one's worse.
I agree that was very sloppy and insensitive on how they had cast Ashley to play a Chinese role instead of just keeping her real ethnicity. Mindy could of talk about the intense pressure of the K-pop industry and high beauty standards and it would of worked too . Honestly I would of rather see a show about Mindy, an Au Pair living in Paris than what we got.
Oh vei. As an Asian-American I understand the frustration when they swap cast one Eastern-Asian ethnicity for another. Memoirs of a Geisha and etc. It makes no sense. Would it have really made a difference to the story or plot if she had been Korean-american? They were probably too lazy and just 'had to keep the bad China-related jokes'.
I really hope the review just pulled the worst “in China we do this” lines, because those ones in the video were gross and wrong. “One child policy”? I guess if you’re a 14 y/o white Redditor, that’s the extent of your China knowledge, but anyone who has spent time in China knows they don’t “all have one kid.” It’s sad, because that could’ve been a great moment for some different fashion. The fashion coming out of Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, etc has a noticeably different flavor than Parisian fashion. Also, Chinese fashion, especially, is looked down upon. It would’ve been fun to deconstruct the obsession that SO many western women have with being a “chic” Parisian girl and shown that there’s more than one way to create an outfit.
One annoying thing was how in one scene that dude says "I like american p****" and she's disgusted, but then one or two scenes later she and Mindy both say she needs "some french D". I didn't know if the irony was on purpose but based on the general tone of the show I didn't think so. It's literally the same thing but just flipped, and that suddenly makes it okay? just inconsistent
There’s a difference between talking with a friend about dicks, tits, vaginas and asses compared to a random person. Especially when you thought you had a „moment“
@@GayTiktok Exactly. The comparison would have worked, if Emily overheard a French guy saying that to a friend. But saying that to a girl you just met is just off putting. I was down for a dumb lighthearted show, but it was just tiring cause everything always went right for her immediately. There was never any real issues she had to overcome.
Her outfits and the whole premise/characters/everything seemed very early 2010s...it’s as if the show’s creators wrote up in 2011/2012, left it, and rediscovered it recently and thought “this could work today!!” It really took me back to that time :// honestly, we don’t need to go back, what with the beautiful fashion trends we have now and the momentous strides taken for fleshed out characters, namely women/minorities/LGBTQ.
Yes exactly what I thought too. I feel like its an outdated concept of a show that they are trying to make relevant by putting things in there about sexism and #metoo

I also hated the romance. Why would I want her and Gabriel to get together when he has a super nice girlfriend that he just cheats on? Is that supposed to be romantic? Why would someone want such a guy?
Especially when you think about how nice Camille is and what a good friend she’s been to Emily. It’s so sad. Poor Camille..
Because it’s really hard to do that
I think it was in part because 1. she wears so much of it instead of just using one item per outfit as a statement piece and 2. there's no unity to what she wears and everything clashes, and when your pieces don't work together, it cheapens your whole outfit in general.

Yes, the modern american colonialistic tendencies are strong.
Emily’s character is so unlikeable. She doesn’t have any flaws, never gets upset (didn’t cry after breakup with long term bf), too prim. Ugly Betty was better because she was human and relatable
I mean I agree she has no like no emotions, buttttt she does have a lot of flaws. She's quite entitled and opinionated.
emily's character gave me nosebleeds in a bad way. i felt like the show was trying to get me to like her but she was just too entitled and unlikable
By no flaws, I think you mean that she thinks she’s perfect.
I mean she's unlikable because she has plenty of flaws. She's selfish, lazy, uses people and she is bad at her job. The issue this series has is that her flaws never have consequences for her. Everyone around her takes her shit and lets her get away with everything so she never grows as a character.
Thank you ! That was my biggest issue with this show. She never evolves and is unrealistically positive and perfect all the time. She's like a robot.

When she says "you reverse the dates" and the guy says "no, YOU reverse the dates" YESSS, nobody else but north americans say the dates like that!
Yep. And the way they write the dates makes zero sense.
In Mexico is Date/Month/Year.
this is why I just cut out the middle man and say the actual name of the month, like, it's not that hard?? and is so much less confusing for everyone??? cause like, if you are from the us and you give the date in another country, then they get to worry abt if you're doing it right and if you're from another country in the us, then it's the reverse! it's such a mess, honestly

the way they kept making the french men clingy and overbearing and overstepping of emily's boundaries felt so strange. like she was always in the right and everyone else was terrible.
The very definition of a Mary Sue. If your main character is written as infallible and perfect in every way, the side characters can only become more flawed. It's lazy writing at its worst.
As if American men are never clingy, overbearing and overstepping women's boundaries /s
This! Every single person in this show is a caricature. They paint unrealistic awful claims about how french people are and then say that Emily is supposed to be "appreciative" of their culture. I hate how she takes photos of people without their permission (often mocking them) and then posts it on her instagram with thousands of followers. Rude much.

This rule never made any sense to me. It's very weird to try to control people's private life when it's completely irrelevant.
Why in the world did they think that'd be okay???
As an American I apologize man
Sending back food is somewhat of a normal thing here but like it’s rare that a chef messes up and you aren’t supposed to be rude about it either like she was normally if I ever have had food sent back it’s because the waitress asked me if something was wrong with my order not because I demanded something be cooked longer etc.
@Dee Ayy Why Night Productions the thing is, generally the waiter asks you how cooked you wants your meat. They always ask beforehand actually, that's why this problem rarely happens
Mindy should’ve been the main character.
Sylvie is my favorite , older women are sexy, and she is wonderfully so.
I think because of capitalism. In America they shame you for looking old and having wrinkles so they sell women all these gimmicky products to feed into their insecurities
So true, for some reason they always come at 30 years old for being old even, what the hell
I really need a list of shows and movies with iconic characters of older women being sultry and self-assured. No. The world needs it.

But it's Lily Collins, she is beautiful whether she is American or not lol She is 31 but looks 18... so her beauty usually appeals to young guys lol

i dont think its egoism. quite the opposite. its escapism because its so impossible. its a fantasy that they want their audience to indulge in. the idea that they could travel to paris, go to fancy events and attract a chef that looks like a male model but also grab the attention of a multitude of handsome sensual cultured french men. the point is that its an unattainable fantasy to most american girls, not that its plausible for an american girl to attract in as many handsome men as emily did.

I love that part in me before you where she gets the tights she was so excited
no emily was definitely meant to look awful, pierre cadault called her a "ringgarde", remember? Cause she IS a ringgarde, who spends heavily on expensive pieces she don't know how to style, and would probably style it with something from Pretty Little Thing, in real life.
That is a big reason why many Europeans dislike Americans, they have such a large ignorance to the world around them it’s really shocking
Camila Alegre I agree. I really thought the point was to show how problematic she is. I thought the show was criticizing Emily’s ignorance.
I think she is literally Serena of Gossip Girl cause Serena never faces any consequences for her action. She can do everything, sleeps with everyone and everybody likes her. Same for Emily here.
No but she had redeeming qualities and actual development don't disrespect her
Yeah, she is nothing like Blair. Also Serena never was this arrogant towards other people
At least serena was nice. Emily is just shallow and detached from reality. The writers wanted to make her Blair 2.0 but it backfired

I am a European and this show is a perfect summary of why no one here likes stereotypical Americans lol
EDIT: apparently I need to clarify, I don’t mean all Americans nor that these behaviors are exclusive to Americans
I do mean that there is an attitude that America is the greatest which is not healthy.
It’s a shame.
lucky for europeans most americancs aren't like that
@@twice_velvet Oh! I live in México and ALMOST all the Americans are like that. Sorry

This whole show was just satire, it was so fun to watch when u don’t take it so seriously idk why all u guys are so mad lmfao
What I find extremely ironic is that Emily acts as though her social media marketing strategies are exemplary and out of the box, but throughout the series, literally all her social media posts are incredibly basic! Emily would of never made it in the Far East.
The amount of attention Emily gets from french guys is the most unrealistic part of the show.
Lmao if they saw her attitude they’d be laughing at her.
@@amstreater exactly why when I travel I’m never giving my body to these men so they don’t dare say “this American girl was easy to get in bed with “ the audacity .

The entire movie selling point is the word “Paris”, yet the main character doesn’t know shit about it. How genius!
@Blablabla bruh at least she should try to learn about the culture with an open mind, and not like bash French culture and French people for any obstacles she ran into. period

We just have to hope that young American viewers are intelligent enough to "get it."
If I look at at lot of the comments under this video I think that they don't get it. They are just very offended by the Emily Character.
It represented it but didn't challenge it, or at least not enough. A lot of her ignorant actions were just brushed off and therefore made it seem like her behavior was ok.
This is also what I took from my binge of the show.
French people are fun ... parisien are awful i live in belgium, went there with school and on another occasions, beautiful city but the history behind it is fucked up. people tend to forget about it
As a French person (also from Paris), I totally agree with everything you said. It's like they tried to make Paris like they wished it was for an American to move there, rather that how it really is. I think it would have been so much more interesting if they had been just a little more realistic.
Did she not even bother to learn any French before moving? Like not even basic phrases that legit take 30 minutes to learn.
Of course not! 😁
Why learn French when we all know that every person in France speaks fluent English with a comedic French accent?
But then again, isn't that true for all the rest of the World? 😊
@@saschamayer4050 i dunno why, i love this comment so much
You can learn basic french in 30 min? Damn okay, teach me how........ because i got no clue how to even pronounce half the words in french with how they dont pronounce half the freaking letters....
Basics:
Bonjour (Hello, Good day)
Au revoir (Goodbye)
Excusez-moi
Pardon
Merci
S'il vous plaît (please)
I feel like most Americans would be able to vaguely understand those.
I think they are using the stereotype of French being promiscuous
well that actually is described in the show as americans = emily being shocked by the love, sex affairs and romance that europeans represent :D so if you are american, this really kind of makes sense as europeans are way more open to such scenes as for example in rome/ paris / prague there are statues of naked people all over the city. we just dont care.
They were broken up, so like 🤷♀️ still shitty i agree, but they arent actully dating at the time 🤷♀️
I was hoping that she would get caught soon.
@@TKDDLJ09 she also kissed him when they were still together
@@wonder0663 I can't seem to remember her kissing him other than the time where she didn't know he had a girlfriend, but yeah, it was definitely shitty. Like no doubt. I just wanted to point out that when they slept together Camille and what's his face weren't together technically. 😂
Magic Books If I remember correctly the second time they kissed she knew that he was in a relationship with Camille
The show Should have been called: „Karen in Paris“
Or made into that show. Us Europeans would eat up a show about entitled Americans coming to Europe only to be made fun of.
As european everyone dislikes france but we will FIGHT a karen that doesnt respect their culture ahahah
As a french "target viewer".... I can't stand emily, she's really really mean, her behavior is awfull, really bad behavior... I don't get why they made such a mean, irrespectful and annoying character... And also, as you mentioned it, french people don't speak well english in general... It doesn't make any sence that every person that she meets is speaking english...that's totally unrealistic
If you are French, or European, you cannot be the target viewer for this crap.
I've only been to Paris twice, but I consider it the de-facto cultural capital of the European Union, and this shit was an insult.
@@isam1542 Yeah I didn't watch it, I just saw reviews but I already found it offensive. by just watching the reviews I already felt insulted (I'm french) 😂😂😂😂.
They read English very well and are often well-read in English or American literature.
Camille would have been a better main character. She's young and pretty, just like Emily, but she's more stylish and much less self involved.
Agreed
truth
And she is not selfsih like Emily
@@slytherinserpent73 exactly
There's nothing wrong about Emily as character, she's fine as one. The problem is with the narrarive that keeps rewarding and framing that paints her as a good person.
I knew Mindy's not Chinese because when she spoke Mandirin it's with this weird accent. She suppossedly Chinese heiress raised by a traditional man of a dad. Why didn't they re-write the character to fit tge actress who is korean if they really wants her?! The writers are weirdos
yeah and the fact that she was a singer would’ve even worked better if she was Korean
Because then they couldn’t have given her those weird stereotypical lines about China
@@zeynepkymet4673 but that's like American views on stereotypical asian thing not a chinese thing... Also the remarks really just like stereotypical rich kids tbh not even asian most of the time
Fairuz Fairuz I mean the whole show is based on Americans’ inaccurate views on the rest of the world so that doesn’t surprise me lmao
@@zeynepkymet4673 true dat
I’m a Chinese American and I think Mindy Should’ve been portrayed as Korean like the actress. It might just be me, but I don’t think the actress looks Chinese. She looks Korean or at the least, Cambodian.
Yes, I'm Half Chinese myself and do agree
if she had Korean parents who moved to China before she was born, she would still be Chinese but look Korean. Just like people can look African but still be French.
This show is just a badly written wattpad story and no one can change my mind
😂😂😂
Yeah emily is such a mary sue
At least badly written wattpad stories have some enjoyment value to them. You can make fun of the Kissing Booth or After and they can be guilty pleasures. This one is just annoying.
Where's the lie 😂
When telling people about this show I have literally said it feels like it's based off of a Wattpad story
Mondoshawn she has designer clothing because she makes 100k a year lol. That’s what you can make in marketing.
Mondoshawn exactly, it’s definitely not meant to be realistic, it’s just a show you’d watch to not think of your own life for a while
Because she gets everything she wants and more.
She tries forcing the French locals to adapt around HER; rather than the other way around, but it just puts her on a downward-spiral.
what i hated the most was her mispronouncing characters' NAMES, like she americanised them which is so rude lmao
Most Americans are terrible at pronouncing foreign names
exactly, whenever i travel i make sure to pronounce names the way they’re supposed to (i have an ethnic name that’s never pronounced right too) along with words i know in their language that i add in to conversations. it’s the bare minimum
That actually shows the reality of americans tho.
pretty sure she called thomas "Toma" but okay
PoptartKid ¿
I really hope the review just pulled the worst “in China we do this” lines, because those ones in the video were gross and wrong. “One child policy”? I guess if you’re a 14 y/o white Redditor, that’s the extent of your China knowledge, but anyone who has spent time in China knows they don’t “all have one kid.”
It’s sad, because that could’ve been a great moment for some different fashion.
Does it matter? She’s an actress playing a role.
This whole review by the way is nitpicking.
That's feminism in a nutshell
@@vinayakjoshi3171 not true bruh. but idk what the writer were thinking for that 1

Exactly. The comparison would have worked, if Emily overheard a French guy saying that to a friend. But saying that to a girl you just met is just off putting.
It’s not a double standard at all. People have different boundaries with friends they feel completely comfortable with, than they do with near-strangers they just met an hour ago.
True the 2010s shows are not even old enough to remake at this point
Yes exactly what I thought too. I feel like its an outdated concept of a show that they are trying to make relevant by putting things in there about sexism and #metoo
Spot on!!!
Same! I was thinking about how the outfits seemed very 2010s. Maybe they were trying to do a homage to sex and the city or something, but because they were so clumsy and bad at it, they just went full out for the 2010s. 100% agree with you
the fashion that she wore in the show is so......cliche as well
She’s such a “pick me” I can’t
She is she slept with her friends man and brother and not to mention he’s 17 like wtf we’re not supposed to like a character like this she should’ve asked what the brothers age is
