Very nice video! Excellent explanation for the synchro mechanism! Please do continue with other such videos.. they are very helpful to mechanics, DIYers and even for enthusiasts who want to know more about the internals of Porsches :)
this is way over my head but i like these videos so much. i try to keep my 944 as good as i can possibly can, spending more and more than it cost me to buy it, and somehow clips like these convince me to hold on to it. thank you, Sir.
I've got an 82' that sounds like a light helicopter between 60 and 70 MPH... this helps me understand how it works a little better. Thanks for taking the time to post this!
Excellent video! I really needed the help with the explanation. I am well versed in most things automotive, but transmissions and transaxles are always something refer out. Having all the jigs and specialty tools are essential and not doing these projects very often, I assume leaving it to the pros.
Hi. Thanks to you i Feel 100% motivated To start my biggest challenge...I've to repare my S2 gearbox because of big trouble on the 2nd gear after that i've asked to my mechanics to try to change the synchro and bearings... I hope the rebuilding Will go Well 😁
Great video. 4th gear is so close to 1:1....it's 1.034:1 on 1988 and up S, S2, and Turbo model. Otherwise it's 1.072:1 for 1982 and up NA 944. Anyway I think it's awesome to watch the tach match the speedometer in 4th gear.
Awesome as always Van.. Nice to finally see and understand what "brass synchro" means.. thx! Is the idler gear for reverse the culprit that many of us hear when in neutral and not clutched-in?
I have a problem. The left rear transaxle on my 944 actually snapped off. What would the replacement entail? As in what would I have to do? Great video by the way! Very informative stuff.
Gene Jost I assume you mean the output shaft on the side if the tranny. That's just held in by a single bolt with a 6mm allen head can can easily be replaced when the axle has been removed. (you'll lose some fluid) However, the bigger question is *why* it snapped...
I looked in a repair manual and it looks like it's the drive axle. Either way it seems like an easy fix. And yeah I have no idea why it snapped! It sucked though.
Hello Van, do you have any experience with the G31 transaxle? If so, do you have any opinions on G31 versus the Audi derived units? Thank you in advance.
Hi Van, I watched the video again to see if you are discuss properly setting up(fine tuning) the gearbox. I have a 5Y gearbox problem since June it rattles on neutral gear when it's warmed up. I had 2 other gearboxes installed after that in my car and they're bad. About repairing my original gearbox mechanic says that one can't set properly a gearbox(during reassembly) without a tool for 2000$. This tool is used to set up some tensions, in free translation the name of it would be "false shaft". The mechanic said something about properly setting differential teeths against each other, so gearbox want whine or fall apart. Does it make any sense? How do you do it? Is there a tool available on US market besides the original one for doing that?
The thing you have to set is the preload of the bearings on the shafts and differential (because the tapered bearings face each other and the aluminum case expands at a different rate than the steel parts), and the backlash, or mesh, of the ring an pinion gears. My transmissions get rebuilt by a guy who has all of the experience and tools - I only take them apart. :)
+jockellis I doubt it, by that era it was all about production for consumer markets, and not about homologating racing cars. But I don't really know. :)
+kfrey1 The NA 944 and 924S used the same R&P ratio. 944 Turbo and 944 S2 each have different ratios, but the gearboxes are physically longer, so the internal parts can't be mixed - but the whole gear boxes can be swapped (but they're taller, so it's a disadvantage in a 944 with less power).
Hi, need your help again, please. Car is all in order, just noticed that i have a burnt bulb front side marker(yellow) passenger side. i took it apart, but couldn't figure out (didn't want to break anything) how to remove the bloody bulb. Do i remove the plastic yellow marker from the white socket housing or remove the socket housing? is the bulb replaced via the yellow marker or via the housig?. as always, your guidance is much appreciated, Jo
Azzurro The lens should unscrew from the white housing with the two philps screws at the ends. There is a rubber gasket which will probably stick... so you'll have to pull a bit.
hey Van, my manual gearbox has sprung a leak and I need a new gasket to go in between the middle section and the rear section. My concern is whether I would need to pull the entire transmission to change that gasket or is there a way I could pull the rear section out alone and change that gasket? I just put in all new gear oil too, what a shame. thanks!
Look up how to replace the 5th gear cluster - I think it's on the Spec944 web page. You will have to remove the transmission (unless your spare tire well has been removed), but it's not too difficult a job.
hi, after long brutal winter, going to start my 84 944 for 1st time since Oct 2014. Battery was removed and charged every so often, fuel stablizer added to fuel tank, removed the air box too, tires raised from concrete floor. Before starting, any preventive tasks or tips you can offer or recommend? oh, one more item, my rad is leaking from the bottom left (driver side) corner where the plastic tanks meet the alum core. Drip of maybe half a cup/day. Any suggestions for repair? Would re-crimping work or any other method/product to seal the leak? thank you Joe
I'd pull the DME relay so there's no fuel or spark... then crank the engine over until it develops oil pressure. Then return the relay and start it up. For your coolant leak, you might just need a new radiator. :(
Thank you for the tips. Also, i've pulled the air box completely as i needed to change a few hoses. dumb question, but i need to ask - where is the DME relay on my 84 944? No sense trying to re-crimp the tank to the alum core? Radiator stop leak - useless or useful? thank you for your help, joe
Azzurro The DME relay is with the fuses - under the dash near the hood release. You can try crimping the the end tank onto the core... You can't do much more damage - it already leaks! I've never taken one apart, but I imagine there's a gasket of some sort that's dried out or broken. As for stop-leak stuff... I'm not a fan. They can work to stop leaks, but I worry that the goo/ooze coats the inside of everything and reduces heat transfer... and/or could cause some other adverse effect.
This is the best transmission explanation video I've ever seen. Thanks for making it!!
Almost 6 yrs later, but I must say your explanations are the best i've found for the Porsche 944. Thank you!
Contemplating a 928 synchro replacement and searching for knowledge, this has been a fantastic Primer

You are the man Van! Thank you for taking the time to make videos like these, they are a great asset to the 944 community.
Man, how am I just finding your videos now? They are amazing. You need to start a patreon page so I can give you money.
I'm glad you like them!

it can also be a wheelbearing or the bearing in the transaxle itself
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to explain how the transmission works.
Quality video. Thank you for posting this video which has proved to be extremely useful. 👍🏽

Good luck. Because of some of the special tools required, I actually have a "guy" for my rebuilds.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing Van!
Wonderful, a really useful video, congratulations!
Great explanation and presentation. You know your stuff!
Simply the best !

No, I really don't have any experience or knowledge on the 924 or 931 gearboxes.
Great video, thanks

Van, did Porsche homologate various ratios for all gears and the final drive of the 944 like it did for 356s and 911s?
+jockellis I doubt it, by that era it was all about production for consumer markets, and not about homologating racing cars. But I don't really know. :)
Are there different gear ratios that can be used?ANDAre there different ring and pinion gears? If so, what cars did they come out of?Thanks,Ken

thank you for your prompt reply. does the DME have a number?
will follow your lead.

It's tall and black... sometimes it says DME on it... Do a google images search or look in your owners manual.
Does anyone know where to find the keys at 6:16???
Probably just a used parts supplier/dismantler
