How to use Text To Speech in the Kindle App while reading along on your iPhone & iPad

- In this tutorial I show how to use Text-To-Speech (TTS) in the Amazon Kindle app on your iPhone (also works the same on the iPad). I also show you which voices you should choose to get Apple's Neural Voices that uses Apple's Neural Engine with excellent quality and very natural sounding. I also show which voices you should not choose. And I also show how to read along while listening to the book. It's very easy to listen along while it reads the book aloud for you. You get great comprehension and to me it is much better than listening to audiobooks. And it's totally free. You don't have to pay for any app or service.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial! It was exactly the solution I was looking for.
You're welcome. I am glad I could help
If you’re having trouble with it only reading one page and then stopping, Turn off the “Page Turn Animations”, under the Aa font, then “more”. I was having the exact same problem and now it works fine. Hope this helps.
Good tip. Also, continuous scrolling needs to be turned off as well.
How can I disable that in the Apple books app using my iPad Pro?
Excellent !! Thought I was going to have some hard things to set up. You made it so simple. Thank you.
You’re welcome
I can't tell you how incredibly thankful I am to you for this video , it has made so much positive change to my reading capacity. subbed your channel
I’m glad to hear that
Thank you. My iPad didn’t give me the swipe down function but did give me a button that I could slide anywhere I’d like on the screen and when expanded read the text on my screen. Except for that, this was a flawless tutorial. Love your channel and thank you again… 💕
Then you have done something wrong. And the menu shows up after the swipe that you can minimize to a button. But as long as you are happy I am 👍🏻
@@svartling It’s actually a blessing in disguise. Thank you again, Your tutorials are so helpful and professional, 💕

Wow thanks for teaching me something new! I can now check out all the library books. I love Siri 2 and 3 myself.
Great! I’m glad to help
Ok this has been life changing. A little bit hard to get the two finger swipe correct but once it works, yes!!! Thank you!!!!

Thank you so much for your video. I'm not a fan of 2 finger swipes, which is hit or miss, but most of the time it works and that's what matters. Great info!
Thanks. I have more videos on my channel about this

Awesome stuff!
Yeah
I appreciate your tutorial! I have listened to audiobooks since the early 2000s when I could carry an MP3 player. I have hundreds of audiobooks. But there was one book I wanted to listen to, but it doesn't look as if it will ever come out as an audiobook. So, maybe by now, there might be a way to listen to Kindle books (which I have by the 100s, too) via text-to-speech. I did a search and turned up your wonderful video!
Thanks so much! I'm anxious to try it.
Question: Can you turn off the display while listening or do you have to have the display on? UPDATE: Yes, you can turn off the display so that the book continues to be read by Siri! Again, thank you for making this discovery possible for me!
You’re welcome
Love the video, if you can help me figure out why it's not working for me I'd really appreciate it. I switched on all of your settings in the spoken content menu. For whatever reason upon activating speak screen I get the menu Immediately (not when swiping down on the screen with two fingers). When I try to get the speak screen to read what's on my Kindle it's simply says "No speakable content could be found on the screen". Any advice?
You need to have the speech controller off in the same settings menu
What are the technical requirements of the IPhone version # or the content that is loaded in Kindle in order to use text-to-speech?
The feature I show in the video is built in to iOS and works with all iPhones above iPhone 7. And works with all ebooks in kindle or any other app
Stefan, I have ebooks on Kindle and audiobooks versions of the same book on Audible.
How do I sync my Audible audiobook with my Kindle text on a Good Pixel 7a Android phone?
No idea. I dont use Audible or Android phones.
Hi. Could you tell me how you make videos like this having 2 screens? Thanks a million
I am using OBS Studio with two phones as camera. I have a video on my channel.
@@svartling thank you so much!

Hello there! I am finding my iPad Pro splits into multiple windows rather than reads like before.
It’s because they added window management at the three small dots at the top. Just drag your fingers down slightly to the right or left of center instead.
@@svartling ah yes! Makes sense. Thank you.
You’re welcome
How does one pause and resume text to speech narration?
With the controls I show in the video and thumbnail.
I too thought the neural voices of Siri were superior to Alexa but times have changed and now Alexa’s voice is every bit as good as Siri’s neural voices. Alexa has the added benefit of reading in the background do I can use Waze in the foreground and listen to my books while driving. Siri unfortunately cannot do this while using the kindle for apple app.
Is it enough to install the Alexa app on the iPhone? Or do I need a real Alexa unit?
It seems to not work with sideloaded books. Only books bought in the Amazon store.
Hi thanks. It keep saying no content readable. Possibly as it’s a pdf I loaded into kindle ?
Could be. Try with an epub or other ebook
I use it with the kindle app everyday so it definitely works. Have you tried with an ebook and not PDF? ANd have you done all the settings right I show in the video?
Turn off continuous scrolling in Kindle app.
@@alanhickok6225 @Stefan Starting, today I downloaded the iPhone Kindle App and tried Text To Speech with a KindleUnlimited title. The Siri read aloud voice skips a group of words like twice a page or so. Is this a common issue, or maybe specific to the title I picked?
Thank you.
In case it helps, the title I tried TTS with was
On The Irrawaddy, by GA Henty
It doesn’t for me. I don’t have kindle unlimited so I can’t try it but I believe that could be the issue.
Unfortunately my brand new iPhone 14ProMax won’t let me use the 2 finger method to pull anything down
Then you are doing something wrong. It works on that phone too. It works on all iPhones and iPads. You need to watch the video again and do the settings right.
@@svartlingsame issue with me
Same
Same
Not easy but I finally got it to work on my 14 ProMax
Kindle scriba doesn't have this feature. It 's very disappointing because is such expensive device.
No this is only on iphone and ipad.
I tried using the kindle TTS function on my pc and it for some reason starts reading the English text with Swedish inflections as if its reading Swedish. Its absolutely horrendous, I was at first not sure what was happening but yeah its absurd and I haven't found a way to stop it from doing so. The setting has always been set to English too so its really odd. Probably some windows nonsense is my guess.
Yeah probably windows. Try set windows to English language
Some books are not supported for this Sir. Tell me what to do.
All books that you can read in the kindle app or Apple Books are supported and works as it should.
@@svartling dear sir, I am a voice over screen reader user and that book is neither supported for voice nor kindle text to speech. So what is the solution sir
All books that are epub works. Not pdf. So use epub ebooks.
why can I Amazon? Not make it take to speak like Text to Speech TTS
Voice Dream
I don’t understand? I show how you can use text to speech with Amazon kindle app in this video
How can I get it to continue reading mine? It’s only reading one page at a time then I have to keep clicking play. Thanks for your videos helped a lot.
Well if you done the settings correctly as I show in many videos on my channel, then it should work but only in the kindle app or Apple Books.
I can't get mine to flip pages either and I followed directions exactly. I do have an older iPhone XR so that might be the problem.
Turn off the “Page Turn Animations”, under the Aa font, then “more”. I was having the exact same problem and now it works fine.
I can’t find anything below Aa. This problem is not fixing up
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The swipe down with 2 fingers does not work on my iPad Air 4. If I don't choose Show Controller, I can't run audio. When I do run audio, it stops after a page or two!
It works on all Apple devices. It’s a feature not a hack. So are you sure you have done everything as I show in the video? All the settings? If so you just have to find the right spot for the two finger swipe. Try a bit lower, try a bit higher until you find it.
I tried some more, & after getting page turns, shrinking screen, & highlighting, I finally succeeded! I hope the trials & errors decrease soon! @@svartling
Again, using Apple's Books app, I've tried two ways of text-to-speech on my iPad: tapping an arrow on the left side of the screen brings up controls to turn on speech, which always starts at the top of the page, no matter where I want it to resume; & highlighting the page to see a menu which includes Speak. Either way, the reading stops at the end of a page, instead if continuing until I stop it. Also, you said to choose a Siri voice, because it learns & improves. Through the entire book, Siri continued to pause at every period (Mr. Mrs.), & its inflections & emphases remain robotic.@@svartling
Does this work on Android?
No not in this way. I know there is some apps that can use text to speech but what I show is Apple devices only.
Hi there. I’ve been using the spoken txt for a year never had a problem until the other day and now it won’t read continuously for me. I have followed your steps, unfortunately when I use the two finger and swipe down…which btw is a pain, yours automatically starts reading, mine dose not. Then once the page turns its stops reading and I have to hit play again. I have bloody well tried everything and I don’t know what to do. Pls help 😩
You have some things you can try in the comments on this video.
I have tried it all 🤦🏼♀️
@user-zw9it7cn4f ok. Then I don’t know
I had a similar problem with iPad Pro (17.5.1) that started today - (1) re-checked all the advice in this video and in the comments (2) I unset the "Speak Screen" flag (Accessibility-Spoken Content-Speak Screen) (3) Shut Down for 5 mins (4) rebooted and reset the Speak Screen flag (5) Shut Down (6) rebooted. It now works as designed, with pages turning and Text-to-Speech working smoothly. (I also cleared Safari "History and Website data for "Today" but I don't think Safari was the problem - should have done that separately to be sure.)
I say I don't think Safari was the problem because I never use Text-to-Speech with Safari, only the Kindle App, but could be linked...
I wonder if I should choose a Siri voice?
Yes I said that in the video. Only the Siri voices are neural engine voices. So only Siri voices.
For the people having the speech stop, I noticed if you close your screen it stops. Apparently you have to keep it open. For this reason I use Voice Dream for my ebooks. But if your stuck with kindle eco system then you have to deal with until Apple fixes there accessibility.
Too bad that Voice Dream is not allowed to use Apple’s Neural Engine voices though. Another alternative is Speech central: Speech Central Voice Reader App is Better & Cheaper than Speechify & Voice Dream Reader Pro
ua-cam.com/video/XnVmwmS4BBc/v-deo.html
That’s interesting. I use this all the time. It only pauses when it turns a page, but the reading continues. What im doing different is the controller is always shown, and a long hold to the controller will read all content. Works like a charm for me
It works perfectly fine for me on how I show it in the video. I have done that for many years on both my iPhone and iPad. So if it’s not working you have done something wrong
And you should not have continuous scroll on in the kindle app settings.
@@ImSchneckenhaus Same here. It continues on whether the display is on or not!
its not letting me turn the page no hands
No hands? What do you mean? It turns the page automatically
@@svartlingNo, not mine. It stops at the end of each page, unless the final word is hyphenated. Then it stops after that word is complete. This could be due to the age of this 2017 iPad or possibly there is a setting to activate? I’ll double check that but, be aware, this can happen to people. Thanks! Great walk through!
It sounds like a setting or something. Works on both iPhone and iPad. Check which settings I use in this video and in a lot of other videos on my channel.
And you should not have continuous scroll on in the kindle app settings.
Make sure you Lock Screen orientation. If screen turns from portrait to landscape while Siri’s reading it will stop at the end of the page. With screen always on and orientation locked, it will keep turning pages forever, and you can listen for hours, or until the book ends, even if the phone’s in your pocket.
does Samsung just jot have this
Yes they have but not neural engine voices. So not as good voices.
@@svartling Thank you for this great tutorial.
In your opinion, are the Siri neural engine voices good when reading/listening to a language one is learning?
Also, why own/use a Kindle reader if you can read your ebooks only in the iPhone/iPad Kindle App?
Thank you very much.
Yes the Siri neural engine voices is great for that too. The second question I am not sure I understand, the ebooks also works on the kindle device. They are perfectly synced with the kindle apps. You can’t use text to speech though. But the ebooks works perfectly fine.
@@svartling Thank you, I did not know the Kindle reader does not always support Text To Speech.
You can also share the screen with reading enabled to Roku's and many TV's so you can do your reading from a large screen, which helps those with poor vision. Amazon removed the screen sharing feature from their Kindle Reader. It made no sense. Fortunately IPAD/IPHONE has the optimum solution. @@JLMABIO
Another solution: Alexa is available for the iPad and iPhone. Just pull up Alexa and say read my kindle book tombstone, or read my kindle book Dracula.
Could be an option if you are an Alexa user. I prefer Apples Neural engine voices though.
My iPhone doesn’t do that
All Apple devices do that
When I try to swipe down from the top of the screen with both fingers, it just brings up the notification Lock Screen. What can I do?
Swipe from a little bit lower then.
It takes a while to get the hang of the two-finger swipe. It usually takes me a couple of tries to get it going, and I’ve been using it every day for 3 years.
This is only for the iphone:) bit misleading title
Are you serious????? The title clearly says iPhone and iPad…. And that is where it works.
Sorry my bad! Didnt find it on iPad at first. Thank you for the tutorial@@svartling
