As someone who is a mechanic, a welder, a machinist, and an avid DIYer who has built two stitch-and-glue kayaks, your videos are incredibly inspirational and treat to watch. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
I’m so glad to see you are helping Mr. Mentor cement-boat guy. I knew you would as he has to be the best friend you have in the world. A teacher of everything with a great shop to use. You are blessed to have such a great supporter. All the best both of you!
You have the motivation of an Olympian, the energy of a solar panel, the positivity of an American and the self belief of Ghandi enabling you to DIY anything. Thanks for sharing some of your motivation with me. I'm at the primer stage of my hull now. Thanks 👍
You should consider reversing the way your exhaust system is made. Your injecting water at the top of the elbow - inherently you are going to have water pooling right in that section as the engine shuts down. Hot salt water = no good over long term. If you rotated the exhaust to come out and up(dry run section) where it essentially creates a "hump", you then have a downward angled section that runs down into your wet exhaust hose - on this downward angled section, you inject your water. If you have tools for it, you would have a larger tube that is outside of your dry exhaust section, where you inject the water(IE 1" dry surrounded by a 2" tube which houses the water). Creates a bit more work to build, but is far superior and would significantly increase the life of that exhaust. I would be happy to share what i'm talking about. I've designed these types of systems for quite a few gen sets and engines.
I enjoy watching your videos and look forward to them every Sunday. I especially love your sense of humor. I'm amazed at all you do and your craftsmanship.

I also liked that you were paying back the cement folks for all the assistance they've been giving you. "What goes around, comes around". Keep plugging away, Mads. Great to see the payback effort by helping with the "Oh glorious sanding" of your friends boat. The gen set seems a bit large, but should certainly to the job, nice adaptation of the inline drive,(no pulleys less trouble), keep moving forward, it's looking great.
Actually the genset is a little small the perkins engine was a freebie but it was thought to be a different model. It turned out to be a smaller and crucially less powerful one. I am trying to remember the figures so I may be wrong but it is projected to develop 3.5 Kv not 5 Kv. This should not be much of a problem as he now has a 5 Kv invertor and Lithium batteries. The batteries have a high C rating hence will soak up the full charge of the itty bitty generator and the inverter can push out enough power to run almost everything even without the generator on. The only downside is the generator will have to be used more often and for a little longer.
@@glennedwards1449 Yep, I think the alternator portion is rated for the larger perkins. So, if he ever gets his hands on a 402...he can swap out and get 7kw out of it.

Don't worry about burning a few liters of diesel. Compared to the rest of the watery world, sailboats are incredibly environmentally friendly. If you get any flack about your genset, you might ask how the amps that are powering your critic's laptop are being generated! Most of the time, those amps came from burning coal or diesel.
There is also the consideration that sailing at high latitides doesnt allow for much solar at all and in winter its not even daylight long enough even if it were sunny!🙄

When fairing corners, instead of using a wooden spoon which does not have any flex, use a credit card. The plastic can be easily cut to the profile you require and it's small enough for tight spaces. Just don't use a current one :-)
Hot tip: I do that with bondo spreaders which are slicker and flex better! You can also repair damaged detailed wood house trim by cutting to fit the profile and replace (usually dog chewed) wood withfiller and it.👍

As I said before, if you ever stop with DIY fun, you can definitely start a career in stand up. For a guy that is primarily a worker, you can be pretty spiffy funny, if I say so myself.
Mads: It's hard to manage 2 boats, Athena and Obelix. Also Mads, now that I have sold Obelix, let's go and see if there is a second boat I can work on at the same time XD. Great work anyway!
The only point I have is the capacity of the house battery bank. To the haters: Mads is turning "Need it and not have it" into "have it and not need it". Much better that way. To the guys claiming it will keep Mads from exploring remote places: You're wrong. It *enables* him to explore remote places, since even if the weather doesn't quite hold up, he can still wash stuff, make fresh water, run the dive compressor, etc. If he didn't have it, there will be a point where he needs to say, "sorry, we can't go exploring there since we're running out of water and have no full dive tanks left". Of course, that moment will come anyway, but with the genset, it will come *MUCH* later. That little genset will probably run for weeks on the contents of the Diesel tank. It also doesn't need to run a lot, since I assume in normal use, most of the energy consumption will come from solar anyway. I'd assume it will be 6-9 months until they need to return to civilization for fuel. Other stuff will run out long before that.
Love the genset. If you take a look of ready to go 48V DC gensets, they’re ridiculously expensive. I think I’m gonna have to make my one in few years as well. Not to power (only) the luxurious stuff but the whole boat one cold climates. Seems that it’s not that difficult :)
There is a LOT to be said for being able to fix/build what you need. I'm an electrical engineer . . . would love to see more of the electrical setup. I love your distributed energy plan. Are you going to have a wet locker with good airflow to dry out your foul weather gear? We always found that to be a great place to also dry out clothes we'd washed and rinsed swimwear too.

We always found that to be a great place to also dry out clothes we'd washed and rinsed swimwear too.
hi the boat is looking good .some time i got to wate 30 day to90 day to get my other to come .
Thank you. Looking great. Greetings from Madison Wisconsin USA
I would love to see a bit of the work on the cement boat if you're stuck for things to film this week.
