      I don't know why, but that's kinda what I had imagined the Asari sounding like. Almost like you are hearing a kind of echo in the voice because even though they are speaking and they are moving air the way humans talk, but you hear it directly in your mind and not through sound hence the kinda bouncy echo it has.

    A very important note: ME1 in the Codex says that most races learn languages of other races, which explains Tali's accent, for example. For the most part, translators are only used to communicate with the Elkors and Hanaras due to the fact that they communicate through the pheromones and subtle movements and bioluminescence that other races cannot understand.

    • @tenkaka11
      @tenkaka11 3 роки тому +100

      Elcor actuallly communicate through pheromones and subtle movements to one another, hence why they declare their "mood" before saying what they wanna say, like "Cautiously, how do you know I like spicy chicken wings?" @CrackFoxJunior 3 роки тому +157

      Not entirely accurate. Some individuals learn SOME languages of their close friends or the cultures they are interested in. There are 6000 human languages and a similar number for each species. Hanar were taught language by the Protheans, so they are capable of learning and understanding languages, but not physically able to speak them without a synthesised voice provided by the translator (since they don't have mouths). Elcor translators are programmed to react to pheromones to inform the listener of their emotions.
      In other words, most characters are speaking in their native tongue, which gets translated back and forth in conversation. Hanar communicate with eachother via bioluminescence. However to communicate with other species they learn a language, and anything they hear gets autotranslated into that language.
      There is a theory that Mordin is actually speaking Shepard's language, as most of his battle dialogue refers to English-specific things, and his speech pattern is broken.

    • @suokkis
      @suokkis 3 роки тому +16

      This would make little sense tough. It can only work if these races could naturally make the same sounds like other races. Like parrots with humans. I'm thinking they went this route with the "auto translators" because recording all that unique dialogue in those voices and practically creating full on languages was an unnecessary waste of time, rightly so. Also I can imagine that being a significant strain on the voice actors.
    Bioware did something like this with the Knights of the Old Republic games, but the lines were always the same few for the aliens who didn't speak english. When I played those 2 games way back when that got really annoying very fast and I started jumping through the dialogue once I got done reading it. I'm super glad they went the route they did with Mass Effect, but it's nice to see they actually did keep the idea of unique alien speech in mind.

    Asari sound pretty good, and the Turians, well.. whilst I don't mind them sounding whatever the devs or writers wanted, 1 critical flaw is that the Turians (and Protheans) have a low vibration in there voice when speaking when speaking to the player. whilst the translations would change how their speech comes out, I doubt such soundwaves would be cut out let alone implemented as shown with the Turians. Only other question would be what Sci-Fi reasoning do they have for there lips being able to match to human spoken words if they are using translators

    • @MeggieSixx

      I like to headcanon that there's a sort of galactic common language, most likely based off of asari and salarian mouth movements. That would explain the turians trying to mimic it but with difficulty and they would likely still need translator help or a modified version of the language. Since humans have a similar anatomy to asari, they would probably be able to speak it fairly well, however only being part of the galactic community for ~30 years I wonder how many humans would be fluent. There's still a lot of things I'd have to work out for this headcanon to work but I feel it better allows for the speech variation we see between species in the game

      With turians in particular, their mouths wouldn't be able to form the same kind of speech that humans do. They probably _couldn't_ speak human languages any more than we could speak an alien language that required sub-vocalizations or multiple tongues.

      Turians at least would probably talk like Vorcha. I doubt Hanar can even actually speak, and really every race with lips could actually probably speak english if not a bit accented, like the quarians. Knowing Tali, she probably actually took the time to learn english. I mean, she did download a lot of things that help her understand our cultures, with language being among them.

    However, not saying this because of any other reason, but the Turians language doesn't fit their character. The Turian should have - and I always been led to believe - a tone more similar to Krogan except softer and quieter. Granted while it is more in line with raptor vocals, it doesn't work.

    This is simply a sound effect known as walla, which imitates the murmur of a crowd in the background. Actors typically just make nonsense sounds in the background. For the background of Flux, they just had voice actors doing walla as turians, walla as krogan, etc. That doesn't mean that it's "what the aliens actually sounds like."
    Like if an actor did nonsense words and sounds in a human voice for human walla, you wouldn't say it's "what humans actually sound like!"
    It's just background vocal noise and is not intended to be anything more. Besides, when you're in Flux, we're hearing this through Shepard's ears, so if it was the untranslated alien languages, why wouldn't Shepard's translator be translating it?
