Very insightful! The difference in lateral vs stomach breathing came to me when starting singing classes, where you are supposed to breathe from your stomach. It took me a while to get accustomed as I was used to not breathe through my stomach in ballet. I always wondered how musical theater dancers manage the balance?
Very informatitive, Claudia. I think this video could have a follow up talking about how breathing can be used to improov some movements, like turns, balances, waltz and allegro. The rythim of breathing and also, maybe more from your point of view, the artistic difference that it can bring to stage. It's a great topic! Thank you!!
For me Breathing is very hard, when it comes to ballet while dancing, so I often search videos like this, but , I honestly don’t find it really useful.... I’m very glad you made this video❤️❤️ You always make these videos so helpful!!!
I am so thrilled about this tutorial! Integrating breath into technique at all levels is a topic I researched for my (recently defended! 😁) MFA thesis. I'm excited to include this video as I work with students!
I've always had trouble breathing through a cambré back... how can it happen, the rib cage is quite engaged by bending up back as it is and the teachers always say "don't hold your breath, keep breathing"... but how? Am I making any sense?
zourdoudaki I know I'm not Claudia, but basically to do a cambre back, you have to open your ribs. If you try to keep your ribs closed when you go back, then everything will just tense up and you won't be able to breathe and you won't be able to go back as far. So this doesn't mean release everything and just lean, but release the ribcage ONLY. Also, forgot to mention this, I don't know if you do Balanchine or not, but if your teachers don't mind, tilt your head to the side (away from the barre) when you go back, it helps a bit.
yes, thank you, I do Vaganova, the point is it open your ribs and take a big breath in and rise and go back... that's the idea, but then I have to hold my breath, I can't breath out through the cambré... and yeah, in Vaganova at least, tilting the head out is a given.
Brilliant video Claudia. Thank you and Louise too. I've some feedback for you: I've used the correction 'breathe into your back' before. -It really helps me with the rib cage breathing. Somehow I can feel it better and I can get more air in. I learned it lying on the floor, where it's easy to feel the back against the floor and imagine the breath travelling down the backs of the lungs or even the spine. It should create the same/similar movement to your rib cage exercise, it might even help some people maintain good abdominal short whilst still breathing well. By wishes to you and your dancers ☺. Love, C.
Hi there, Claudia! I love all of your videos, they are so helpful. I was wondering if you might consider doing a video on keeping the ribcage relaxed and tucked in and the lower back aligned or something similar. Thanks so much, xoxo
I am used to hold my breath while dancing (I am a beginner hip-hop dancer). I get tired easily, I have never been able to dance through a whole song; my energy drop easily. Thank you for helping.
Hi Claudia, thanks to you and Louise for this video. I get the rib cage breathing, I think singers are taught to breathe this way too and babies do this naturally. Could you clarify when to inhale and when to exhale. For eg. during plié would you exhale as you bend the knees and inhale as you stand/straighten the legs? I think it would be really helpful if you added breathing with the dancer in your tutorials. Thank you.
I love your videos Claudia, really helpful and so easy to understand (great teaching), but please, the next time can you do a video about breathing techniques when we do cambré?, ‘cause I think that’s one of the most difficult positions for keeping your breath normal, so that would be really really helpful for class and stuff, thanks for the amazing content! 🎀
Applicable breathing is actually apical breathing probably from the word apex such as the top of the lung (?) Otherwise, great video!! Love the information and exercises
I find that when I'm in class I can't breathe very well, even though I breathe through my rib cage. I do find that I compare myself to other dancers because I started ballet "late in the game". I'm almost 24 and have been dancing since I was 18. I find that often I tense up when it comes to certain exercises. I know that I'm not sure I'm good enough to become a professional dancer. I just, I'm not sure how to break that fear that grips me in class especially.
I started dancing at age 3. Now in my 30's and still try every week despite challenges because it is awesome for your health. I noticed as I start out I tend to hold my breath entirely. Then I have to contiously remind myself to breath after a quick bit. I hope I am normal? lmbo. I will try breathing exercises on the mat before trying to dance. Thank you!
Katie Johnson Hey Katie, i think you're totally normal! After six years training full time I got injured. -Get this, It took a whole year of not-dancing before all my abdominal muscles relaxed entirely and I could breathe properly. A whole year! So I think I know where you're coming from.. -One extra tip if you like is to do breathing exercises right down into your lower abdomen either during cool down or after class or at night before you sleep. It makes dancers more relaxed generally and reduces the build up of tension that can contribute to the not-breathing during class. Best of luck!
just me! Thank you! That makes a lot of sense. I had to take a 3 week break from exercise. I had been trying to get more ab. strength for roughly year prior. It wasn't until I fully rested that I began to see a change. Relaxation is vital. Thank you so much for your reply. So nice to be understood. Hugs
i keep holding my breath while i dance and i feel air go out and in my body even when i don't inhale it's such a bad habit and makes it hard for me to dance bc i hold my breath without trying
I tend to breath in and in and then hold it while dancing. It is such a bad habit! Thanks for the tips! I will definitely try and improve.
I hope my tips help you!! xx
