    To anybody who is thinking about starting ballet at an older age, just remember the amazing Misty Copeland started at 13!! You always have a chance to catch up and be great if you are dedicated and hard working! No age is too late!

    "This is a really hard exercise." Yes it is. I can do the hip flexor exercise...until I try to straighten my knee. Then the shaking begins and then the cramping of my upper quads. I strongly believe that if you didn't grow up working on this exercise, it is very difficult to get your legs above 90 degrees. SO hard. But thanks for sharing this. I will be working on it!

    This certainly brings back ALL the same training as I knew and FELT of agony to ease of gaining extended devlopes from 90' to 175' - stretches everyday to open all FULL potential of available turnout. And NEVER ENDS to retirement. Oh, to be 15 and surrounded by so many wonderful teachers! Thank you! This is fun to see another hopeful.

I used to have higher extensions but having babies (which I've had a few years of a ballet dancing break) really changed a lot of my muscular shape and what not. Any advice on how to "retrain" or bounce back would be awesome! I've been doing some barre and center work for the past year or so more consistently and I'm finding that my left hip is harder to work with. lol! I feel better since starting but I'm still working on my turnout and extension and just being stronger. Anyways, thanks for any advice. :)

    • @MJLionnavy
      @MJLionnavy 7 років тому +43

      If you just started on march for the first time, it looks like you are still a beginner, and I think it's perfectly normal you can't get your extensions higher than 90 degrees. I'd even say it's normal you can't get them much higher than 45 degrees, depending on how flexible you are and what kind of physical activity you did before. Progress on that aspect is much slower than we'd like and I think it's best to focus on proper alignment and execution rather than height.

    • @pheart2381

      P Heart Sure!
      I'm a contemporary dance student that started late, and I remember getting really frustrated at things like that, but at the same time I was arrogant and I neglected other essential aspects of my ballet training, and because of that I'm stuck between begginner and intermediate, I need to catch up on a few things. If I could go back I'd tell myself not to stress about height of extensions, just work the right muscles, learn the combinations and then height will come.

      I'm 51 - I've been doing all kinds of 'little muscle' work. Check the angle of your pelvis, and make sure that your pelvis and the small of your back are *really stable* as you do your routine. (Note that she's telling this experienced dance that it will take months of consistent work to build up strength.)

    The 'dot' that is being activated with the 'adductor' muscles is the vastus medialis which is part of the quadriceps.... not the hamstring. I can't see how the hamstring is responsible in extensions? Sure the hamstrings are an antagonist in extension but that means they are not responsible for the 'effort', only the lengthening... hip flexion with adduction will activate vastus medialis, rectus femoris, iliacus, psoas major, sartotius and gracillus.

    Hi Claudia, thank you so much for sharing all these exercises and tips! I am so happy to have found your channel and enjoy your videos very much!! I am a 31-year-old adult beginner who just started ballet for a year. I work at a desk job during the day and have tight and inflexible hips and poor leg extensions. I'm don't think I have ever been able to maintain my leg extensions at or above 90 degrees! 😩 Would these exercises help someone like me at my age? If so, could you advise which exercises and how many reps I should be doing every day? Thank you so much, Claudia!!

      Hi Mel, How exciting and definitely keep going and working hard! Extensions in ballet require strength, so these are ideal for you. I would recommend 1 & 4 for you to start with and begin with 10 on each leg for each exercise. So happy to hear you enjoy my channel and there will be many videos to come that you will love! XX CD

      Me too! I have been able to work up to solid 90 degrees...just do repetitions every day. Like while brushing your teeth. Raise it as high as you can and hold it. Or pulse up and down near your maximum. And work on that core!!

      The Bloch Canvas spilt soles. I have a pair and they are amazing. They really allow for more arch flexibility.
      If you are going to get them though I would recommend getting one width size down from your normal shoes if you normally use leather. For example, I'm a 5C in Bloch Leather, but in the Bloch Canvas the 5B fits me best.

    Hi! I just turned 23. My relationship with dance has been an off and on one. When I was 4 or 5 I took my first balletclass for about little over a year. Than I did jazz when I was 9 years old and I did that for 2 years one day a week. After that I went on to musicaltheatre and I lost touch of my love for dance. Until I got in to a performing arts schoolprogramm where we had danceclass every week for 2 hours. At that time my technique was basically at ground zero again and I had to start from scratch. After graduation my technique was where I left off when I went on to musicaltheatre. Since than I had done some danceprojects and cources but never really diehard. But I am missing that diehard training so much that I recently installed a barre in my home and I am determent to step my game up. Next summer I will go on a one week trainingcamp and at this point my legs get up about 85 degrees. By the time of camp I want to get that up way higher. So what would you suggest I do? :) Ooph, that was a long story, lol xd Thanks, bye!
