To anybody who is thinking about starting ballet at an older age, just remember the amazing Misty Copeland started at 13!! You always have a chance to catch up and be great if you are dedicated and hard working! No age is too late!
One of my teachers started ballet in the age of 18, and believe it or not but he became a professional Solist ❤️
And i start from 27.. 😘😘😘
Lol meanwhile I'm 28
I started at 3 (I'm 12) 😃
Knapp Bristol I started at 3 too!
Me in ballet class:
*builds up developpé*
*DROP*
Omg, I cant even get my leg up to a 90 degree angle for 1 second.
My teacher is always screaming “HOLD YOUR LEG UP” across the room to me 😂😕
Knapp Bristol same 😂😂
*ME*
@@aldc1697 same!😂 she's like higher up! Higher up😬
“Do you feel that?”
Smiles and shakes head to keep from crying because it’s so hard
Relatable? No just me.
You have no idea how hard it is for me to keep my leg up straight for 2 seconds. (I cant even get to a 90 degree angle)
@@knappbristol6968 how far have you gotten now, 4 months later?
@@ajolusegun Way higher 😌
@@knappbristol6968 that's great!!!!
I was looking for something that said that these work!
I am 45 and just starting with ballet for the very first time in my life 🤗 about a month ago, I know this maybe crazy 😜 for everything is very stiff in body, but I always wanted to learn ballet since I was a little child and I could never even dream about affording a class until now 😃 you are a wonderful mentor and I love the way you explain your lesson. Thank you 🙏🏼 so much for doing these videos they are my inspiration 😘
Marcela Carmona go girl, dance is the best medicine any one can have , go enjoy yourself x. Take care 👯
Omg same! I'm taking my first ballet class at the age of 30, and my first performance is next week. I've always wanted to do it, and I'm so proud of myself!
crankysister yeh , dance is amazing any style any age.. enjoy every minute. Take care
Good for your. Did you see the youtube video about the ballet instructor who was 70?
Get it girl!
I really need tips on how to stop using quads and start using other muscles!
artiztique fit and bendy has a good video on that
artiztique me too omg I always get pain after awhile because I’m using the wrong muscles
Saaaame
I know it's late, but she just did a video on it, about the "VMO" muscle....
Madeline M hi, which video?
"This is a really hard exercise." Yes it is. I can do the hip flexor exercise...until I try to straighten my knee. Then the shaking begins and then the cramping of my upper quads. I strongly believe that if you didn't grow up working on this exercise, it is very difficult to get your legs above 90 degrees. SO hard. But thanks for sharing this. I will be working on it!
Linda Harrison i had the same problem, don't give up, you'll get there in the end!
GOOD Thats how you become better:)
Hey Linda. I wonder how much progress you've made by now! In conjunction with these type of conditioning exercises I find yoga really good for strengthening the legs. It speeds up the process for me. good luck :)
Of course it is hard but still VERY ACHIEVABLE!
I am the oposite of naturally flexible (doctor was like "you´re stiff as a 60 year old" when I was 20 and I just started stretching like at 22 - now I am turning 26 and aim to be a contortionist at 27
Nino Circus Freak WOW! I think it's amazing what you've done! How on earth have you managed it ? Are there any specific technique styles or programmes you've followed? Cos I'm the opposite of naturally flexible too and though I've a positive approach to my exercises I would never have considered the kind of progress you have described possible.
This is the best dance channel I have ever seen
Lyliac Justus Thankyou!!
Lyliac Justus i
I Agree
Where were teachers like you when I was 15? It’s so wonderful that you’re sharing your knowledge, good on you!
I have been doing exercises 1 and 2 for 10 days now and I notice an improvement! I think the exercises help me to identify the correct muscles to use to lift my legs and to avoid overusing my quads. As an adult dancer I will be happy to just achieve 90 degrees to the side and I am almost there!
These stretches really helped me in ballet! Thanks so much for making this video. My leg is 50x higher than how it used to be.
Claudia, I'm so happy that I found your channel! I'm almost 23 and have been trying to get into ballet for the past few years. I've been dying to increase my flexibility and extensions, and I think these are really going to help! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the support xx
Hi Claudia! I’m 13 years old and have absolutely no training in any form of dance. However I am very flexible and have great leg and core muscles! I love to dance and the reason I don’t have any training is because my parents simply can’t afford it. However I like to self teach myself techniques and tricks at home with the help of your videos!! Your videos really do help me with my flexibility and my technique. I hope one day that I will be able to dance at a studio!! Thanks for these videos they inspire me to keep going!!!♥️♥️
I'm 19, fulltime contemporary dancer last year but may be dropping back to just open classes this year.
I'm looking at the #3 devant lifts and the #2 extended flexor exercises. Thanks Claudia
These videos are so helpful thank you for doing these!! Very clear and very insightful. So much new information and tips I've never heard of before!
1) 1:30 - 2:20
2) 3:16 - 3:40
3) 4:30 - 5:58
4) 6:52 - 7:29

This certainly brings back ALL the same training as I knew and FELT of agony to ease of gaining extended devlopes from 90' to 175' - stretches everyday to open all FULL potential of available turnout. And NEVER ENDS to retirement. Oh, to be 15 and surrounded by so many wonderful teachers! Thank you! This is fun to see another hopeful.
Hi Claudia. I'm 28 years old and I started Ballet like close to 8 months as a means to stay fit and active. I'm really enjoying it and I do want to get better at it. Your videos are an inspiration. I think I'm going to start doing these exercises to work on myself at home since I'm only taking two classes a week.
"devon" at first i didn't understand then i realized you say "devant" but with your english accent x) i love when you say those words like "plié", "6,7,8 AND grand jeté", for a french person like me that is absolutely wonderful
Hello Claudia,I am 22 and can hold my legs at about 90 degrees for a few seconds, and I almost have my side splits. I've been focusing intensely on ballet and strength training this semester, and these excersises seem like they could really help with me extension! I want to kick the stars! Thanks for the rep suggestions!
I love how much you know about muscles. I went to medical high school and I know every muscle that you are talking abouz
Yesss that's great Katarina x :-)
These exercises seem amazing! I'm an 18 year old beginner and I can't wait to get started! My développés and attitudes are awful right now so all help is appreciated!
I'm a ryhthmic gymnast, but your videos are helpful to me too!! I find them really well explained and useful, more than other that I've watched before. You seem a really great teacher. Thanks a lot!!! Kisses from Spain 💕
Thank you so much for your support xx kisses from Australia! :)
This video is amazing and I'm so glad to have found it! I'm 14 and do ballet 6 days a week and am wondering how frequently I should do this and for how many reps. Thank you so much!!
Shaking as a sign you're doing a new thing right and using the correct muscles. So true I cried.
I would actually love to try all of them! I struggle with turn out and I've been watching your videos they are incredible I also struggle with the strength in my feet so when I watched your videos Im thinking of doing all of them to help me improve in my dancing. So again thank you so much for helping young dancers like me to help succeed with our strength.
This channel was what I was looking for.
that's what I love to hear xo
I'm 14 and I started ballet when I was 8 and I stopped when I was 9 , and came back at it when I was 13. level 1 ballet
Same i just began again today
Me too! I started ballet at 7 and quit at 9, now I'm 14 and I started again!
Omg same I was in ballet from like 5-6 but I quit and now I’m 15 and I really wish I hadn’t quit and I really wanna join again but I feel like 15 is too old
Princess Miram 15 isn't too old! I started at 15 with no previous experience and I'm 18 now but I have made a ton of progress:)
Colleen Cutforth the problem is that I want to start again but I don’t think the places around my city start this late. They have classes for really young kids and adult classes, but none in my age range. What did you do?
This is so incredible!! I've danced for years but due to a lack of improvement at my studio, I have started trying to practice more and get better and better in my own. Just doing the first 2 exercises here for a couple weeks has helped me improve! I have not done it for very long, but my extensions are already a couple inches higher :D
Love these. I’m not a dancer but i am a figure skater and these exercises really help with my spirals. Thank you so much
I'm 19 and I'm looking at all of the exercises as I've been stuck with trying to get my legs higher
Hi Claudia! I just realized that this video is the reason for my improved splits on the aerial hoop! I am 27. How many reps of the hip flexor/deviant/seconde exercises would you recommend? And should I be doing it daily? You are awesome! Thank you for all of your help!💖💗
thank you so much. i have been wanting to do this for years and this video i can already tell is exactly what i needed. i am so excited to practice this every day and see results!!! i will definitely follow your channel and watch more videos thanks again
#3 Was never taught to me by my teachers I really think it will improve my extensions significantly I will let you know I will start them immediately thank you so much Claudia ❤️
Spasibooo❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ THANKS💓💓🖖🏾
NO WORRIES xx :-)
Hi! I'm 28 and I have been dancing ballet for six years, I am now training at the advanced 1 level of the Royal Academy. I train every day but I'm not super flexible :( thanks a lot in advance!
Joel González Hi, I would recommend you do exercises 1 & 4 and do 12 of each on both legs to start with. After they become easier over a few months then increase to 15 X CD
I wish this video came out 10 years ago when I was trying to get mine higher and I was still dancing. Still awesome to know....thank you!
Claudia, you are a genius! You are a master for ballet. I love all of your videos and amazing hacks. THANK YOU!! It is so helpfull♡♡
Not me doubling every amount of reps she say bc I want results fast
I'm actually a martial artist but believe this can help with my high kicks.
Same here mate!
Hello! I do these also with my students! Its great to know more people know about this simple but effective exercise. You are wonderful.
This is an amazing video and I am very excited to add these exercises to my stretching list etc. x
Hi Claudia! i'm 17 turning into 18. i've started ballet classes last year and i'd love to get higher extensions as this is sth very hard for me to do. which exercises would you recommended me to do and how many times? thanks,
kisses from Argentina
My little sister thinks a leg extension is her pulling on my leg 😂 . This is much more effective, thanks claudia!
I've been using a lot of these exercises for Martial Arts kicking & it's helped immensely!
These exercises are AMAZING! I am so glad that I came upon it, and I will be doing them everyday. Thank you!
Yes practice makes perfect!! xx
I have over splits in my kicks. I'm. Extremely extremely flexible. But not the most strogestes in my hip flexors I did not no they even existed so this helped alot
I'm 31 but have danced since I was eight. I used to have higher extensions but having babies (which I've had a few years of a ballet dancing break) really changed a lot of my muscular shape and what not. Any advice on how to "retrain" or bounce back would be awesome! I've been doing some barre and center work for the past year or so more consistently and I'm finding that my left hip is harder to work with. lol! I feel better since starting but I'm still working on my turnout and extension and just being stronger. Anyways, thanks for any advice. :)
Congratulations! You are the first teacher I see asking not tu basculate the hips. Bravo!
This really works right after. Im looking forward to the progress after the months you said. Thank you. Im 27 and coming back after 13 years.
im 46! exercises one and two. ive been doing barre 3 times a week since march and cant get my develope above hip height without losing proper alignement.
If you just started on march for the first time, it looks like you are still a beginner, and I think it's perfectly normal you can't get your extensions higher than 90 degrees. I'd even say it's normal you can't get them much higher than 45 degrees, depending on how flexible you are and what kind of physical activity you did before. Progress on that aspect is much slower than we'd like and I think it's best to focus on proper alignment and execution rather than height.
MJLionnavy thanks for this advice,i am still in the beginner bracket.
P Heart Sure!
I'm a contemporary dance student that started late, and I remember getting really frustrated at things like that, but at the same time I was arrogant and I neglected other essential aspects of my ballet training, and because of that I'm stuck between begginner and intermediate, I need to catch up on a few things. If I could go back I'd tell myself not to stress about height of extensions, just work the right muscles, learn the combinations and then height will come.
I'm 51 - I've been doing all kinds of 'little muscle' work. Check the angle of your pelvis, and make sure that your pelvis and the small of your back are *really stable* as you do your routine. (Note that she's telling this experienced dance that it will take months of consistent work to build up strength.)
Layla Nahar thanks.
The 'dot' that is being activated with the 'adductor' muscles is the vastus medialis which is part of the quadriceps.... not the hamstring. I can't see how the hamstring is responsible in extensions? Sure the hamstrings are an antagonist in extension but that means they are not responsible for the 'effort', only the lengthening... hip flexion with adduction will activate vastus medialis, rectus femoris, iliacus, psoas major, sartotius and gracillus.
Great job once again Claudia! Ily
I'm 23 and have really poor extension. Looking at exercises 1,3 and 4! Can't wait to get started!!
I'm 13 and have been dancing since I was 2. I am very flexible. I have all 3 splits but my right leg is slightly more flexible. How many hip flexor exercises should I do??
I'm 12 and I would like to know how many times I should do this
Hi Miss Claudia, I’m turning 10 yro in March and I love this hip flexor training. I get my leg high ( upto next to my ears or behind my head )but lately the teacher said I need to maintain my hip Square and I don’t know how . Your voided is so help and I’m looking forward to meet you in class soon! Thank you. Xoxo
Love 💕

I'm 30 years young. Started taking Ballet lessons 2 months back and believe me, it's never too late!
hi, I have two girls 16 and 7 who would like to improve their extensions. both are flexible and have their splits. they are recreational dancers who occasionally compete, but would commit to a daily exercise if it meant having an extra skill to demonstrate during competition. what would you recommend please?
I'm 51 and still actively dancing. I've had a total hip replacement in 2012. It's still hard for me to do the splits and leg extensions. Do you have any ideas on how I could do the splits again and leg extensions. The Dr said I may never dance again, I proved him wrong. He's very impressed at how flexible I still am. Thank you for your videos! Keep it up!
Did you ever get a reply? I'm 51 and back to dancing after a spine fusion. I am interested in the response to the question.
I absolutely love what you do, this is so so useful!
thank you! the most useful and guided extensions video i have seen so far!
Oh Fiona you're too kind!! xx
Hi Claudia, thank you so much for sharing all these exercises and tips! I am so happy to have found your channel and enjoy your videos very much!! I am a 31-year-old adult beginner who just started ballet for a year. I work at a desk job during the day and have tight and inflexible hips and poor leg extensions. I'm don't think I have ever been able to maintain my leg extensions at or above 90 degrees! 😩 Would these exercises help someone like me at my age? If so, could you advise which exercises and how many reps I should be doing every day? Thank you so much, Claudia!!
Hi Mel, How exciting and definitely keep going and working hard! Extensions in ballet require strength, so these are ideal for you. I would recommend 1 & 4 for you to start with and begin with 10 on each leg for each exercise. So happy to hear you enjoy my channel and there will be many videos to come that you will love! XX CD
Thank you so much, Claudia! I really appreciate your advice and your willingness to share!
Me too! I have been able to work up to solid 90 degrees...just do repetitions every day. Like while brushing your teeth. Raise it as high as you can and hold it. Or pulse up and down near your maximum. And work on that core!!
It's like you're me! haha You see, I'm also 31 years old, desk job, totally beginner (started 3 months ago). I've been working on my hips and leg extensions. Wondering how you're doing now, I'd be grateful if you could share an advice or anything!!
Hey Claudia! I’m 20 years old, how many reps should I be doing?:)
So good that you show it in slow motion. Thank you!
Wish I could take a class from you some day but live too far away :( So I, and I'm sure many others REALLY appreciate you putting content on UA-cam so that everyone has access to quality ballet training. I really want to improve my balances , and I know you made a video but could you make one for balancing tips and tricks in general ? Thanks :)
i'm 23 and want to improve how high i can hold my leg up
Claudia, I am over 70 but can still dance a fusion of hip hop and ballet. I need to strengthen my ankles so which of your videos would you recommend? Thanks.
Sex ist the best..I'm serious..❤
This is gold! I'll start that tomorrow! Thanks! ❤️❤️❤️
Omg you explain everything so well! You must be an excellent teacher
It looks as if she is too far over her right side in a la second left leg on barre. Can you explain the result or feeling of being too far over the hip vs too far "center"?
I think she means it looks like she is sinking into that left hip. I noticed it too.
First comment 😜❤️
You are a wonderful teacher!! I wish i were a pupil of yours since i was a little ballerina. Thank you for sharing!
i really like your videos. you're showing good tricks, also you explain how the exercises work (like wich muscles are trained etc.) really good :)
I'm a beginner in my 40s! I'd love to know how many reps!☺
Oh my gosh, I can't even lift my legs 😂 lol 😂
By the way I'm not a dancer and I want to be one, but my mom won't answer me when I ask her if I could dance. (Like learning) ❤️ I just found your channel and I'm loving it already!😊
I love this video! I'm a ballet teacher so this will be great for my students!
Thank you! I'm 47 years old and still teaching ballet but I continuously learning more techniques. This will be helpful.
what kind of shoes are zoe wearing? they fit to the foot really well
Kat3kob I think they're Bloch canvas shoes ?
The Bloch Canvas spilt soles. I have a pair and they are amazing. They really allow for more arch flexibility.
If you are going to get them though I would recommend getting one width size down from your normal shoes if you normally use leather. For example, I'm a 5C in Bloch Leather, but in the Bloch Canvas the 5B fits me best.
Hope this helps!
I use Bloch and London point shoes
i hope i can go to the yagp!!!!
I'm 13 and I'm wondering how many reps I should do for each exercise❤️
Hi Sammy! I would recommend you do exercises 1, 3 & 4 and do 10 of each on both legs. If you wanted to do exercise 2, then do 5 on each leg to start with X CD and thanks for watching!
Claudia Dean Coaching thanks for the tips!! Love the videos!
Hi, I'm 14 and I'm ISTD intermediate foundation and I'm wondering how many reps I should do for each exercise? Xo
i mean i would do as many you can before you start to cry....thats what i did
Solid advice! Just go for as many as you can on the weak side and repeat on the stronger one. This way you will even out both sides to become equal
This was a great tip video. When I used to dance years ago I was never able to get high extensions but I was also never taught any proper technique/given any exercises on how to achieve this. I always used my quad muscles for devant and never understood what I was doing wrong! 😩 I’m wanting to pick up ballet again for fun and exercise but want to have proper technique and tips available. Thanks for sharing!
*Hello. I'm new to your channel. I am 10 years old. I started dancing at around 4 or 3. In 2 days, my extensions were getting higher. Thanks to this video, it's now improving. I also like your videos. It's really entertaining! Also, congrats! You got a new subscriber!🖤*
I'm 19 but have really weak muscles and can't really develop either of my legs higher than 90 degrees in devant or second. I was thinking of try excercises 2 and 3 and maybe 4 so how many times would you recommend reps every day. Thank you :)
Hi Kimberley, I would recommend you do exercises 2 , 3 & 4 and do 12 of each on both legs to start with. After they become easier over a few months then increase to 15-17 X CD
Claudia Dean Coaching thank you for replying. I'll give them a try, thank you for sharing with us x
Hi I am 16 and struggling with jumps for ballet. I also find that I grip my thighs in turnout and am having difficulty toning the bum for ballet properly! Also if you have any tips for aligning feet and ankles as my feet are really arched which means i struggle on pointe in terms of strength! Thank you!
there is a 10-minute Victoria secret model workout with Andrew orbek and that really tones the bum and thighs :) hopw this helps
Always awesome tips ❤🎉🎉🎉 grazieeee
Wow! Thanks for the amazing effort of educating ❤️❤️❤️! Im doing pole and working on my extensions

When I'm doing the first exercise for example, when I put my leg back into retire it click/clunks (think it's my hip) is this normal?
Same.
I love your tutorials! I'm a huge Aussie fan in general, and I watch all kinds of documentaries. I'm an American dancer in Chicago. We have the Joffrey and Hubbard Street dance companies, and the competition is fierce. My turnout and my phouette turns are 100% better since watching your videos. Thank you and please keep posting! XO (When I think of Australia, now I think of Claudia Dean instead of Katherine Mary Knight. Vast improvement. :) )
It is very good tutorial and I can follow these steps by myself and practice everyday. Thank you.
I will do all of these exercises because I'm in ballet
Good on you xx
Hey:)
Can you please do how to improve arabesque?

@@ClaudiaDeanWorld I usually fall on my butt when I do this but after used this tutorial I can hold it for like ten seconds thanks
Thank you so much. It's really good video. I feel turning on point it difficult. Hope you have more videos coming up.
Full of grace & joy ❤❤❤
My Hip flexors hurt and I guess theyre very tight how do i get rid of this tightness?
I know I'm late but really try to keep your hips square do the dot thing and maybe get Massage. Hope it helps..😉
Jane Hervilla try doing the splits but bend your front knee putting your foot underneath your thigh do this for about one minute on each leg and it should help stretch out your hip flexors. This should also make your splits easier
I really struggle to lift my leg off the bar at all!!
Very Helpful Videos for WWII Tap, Swing and Latin dancer getting back into action...very nice instructional pedagogy.
Hi! I just turned 23. My relationship with dance has been an off and on one. When I was 4 or 5 I took my first balletclass for about little over a year. Than I did jazz when I was 9 years old and I did that for 2 years one day a week. After that I went on to musicaltheatre and I lost touch of my love for dance. Until I got in to a performing arts schoolprogramm where we had danceclass every week for 2 hours. At that time my technique was basically at ground zero again and I had to start from scratch. After graduation my technique was where I left off when I went on to musicaltheatre. Since than I had done some danceprojects and cources but never really diehard. But I am missing that diehard training so much that I recently installed a barre in my home and I am determent to step my game up. Next summer I will go on a one week trainingcamp and at this point my legs get up about 85 degrees. By the time of camp I want to get that up way higher. So what would you suggest I do? :) Ooph, that was a long story, lol xd Thanks, bye!
Hi Claudia! Point is fine. But extension is not 😀. Im 45 n hv been doing ballet for 5 yrs. how many reps should i do? (probably the oldest here 😶😶)
Hi Dee, how fantastic and good on you! I would recommend you do exercises 1 & 4 and do 12 of each on both legs to start with. After they become easier over a few months then increase to 15. Thanks for supporting my channel! X CD
Claudia Dean Coaching Thank u for the advise! ❤❤
Devon...
French->front->devant.
Not pronouncing it right is one thing, writing it wrong is another.
Thank you
Thanks for explaining! I kept thinking, I've never Heard of a 'Devon' movement. But it's just 'devant'. That I know! 😂
Yeah I actually speak French and I was sitting there so confused, because I wasn't sure if it had a different name or not. I have so many professional teachers that don't know how to say the movements properly, even though they've been saying these words for years. Exactly.
