Not quite a direct comparison, as the Russian is intended to be a full day's worth of food. What you have there is the "Thursday" installment of their "Week of rations" series. I had a few cases of these at one point a few years ago, but I only have a couple left because yes, they are that good. Thank you for another wonderful review! Zed USS Simon Lake AS-33 Holy Loch, Scotland 1988-1991
Нет. Это разовый паек, не суточный. Четверг это просто набор меню. Ещё с ссср есть такое понятие- четверг - рыбный день. Поэтому в нем была уха. А в суточном пайке 3 основных блюда и много закусок
It's not "Week of Rations". Nedelya zhisni means "Week of Life". Which is probably their way of setting expectations. Expectations of maybe not a "Week of Delights", but a week with reasonably enough calories and nutrients that you will live.
There's also the consideration that not all MREs are created equal in the US ARMY. Those of us who spent a lot of time in the field or overseas learned really fast which ones were actually good, and which ones were offensively bad. You could see this too because there would end up being a pile of MREs no one wanted after the boxes were pilfered through. A lot of people thought omelet MRE was bad, which I concur, the entrée tasted terrible, but it had Skittles in it, and you could trade Skittles for almost anything.
@@Animaggilgamesh As an exercise to myself I will translate the Russian comment here without using a translator. "No. This is a single pack, not a daily. Thursday is simply a menu selection. There's a Scottish staple dish called Stovies: fried onions, and diced potatoes, then the heat is turned down, and left to stew. Meat, often tinned corned beaf, is added. Having been ill, and not done my grocery shopping. I recently discovered a quick way to make a larder cupboard version: powdered mash (butter, and milk powder was added) some onion gravy granules, and half a tin of corned beef... I was so pleasantly surprised, I made the same a few nights later 😋

First of all thank you for your service!! Love the video. Very classy! And finally did I detect the voice of Ace in front of you? Thank you for the video.
I would go with a russian one just because of the nuts and seeds. Overall it seems to me that Russian has more nutritional value in terms of healthy fats from nuts and seeds. American one seems to me very focused on carbs which means that probably the russian one could be more filling.
In a survival situation, carbs are the most important. Russian may be more nutritional, preferable for usual situations in battle, but i would take the US one in a dire situation.

I've been to Russia, this is actually a standard MRE and the army made one's are insane, they all have beef and pickled and salt preserved meat and a bunch of other stuff
im not familiar with the Russian freeze dried MRE, thank you for this video. the regular Russian MREs don't have a lot of variety, but the good nutrients they give you are great.
You may not have heard the story about the old tray I ordered. It was sold on the website (this has been about 2 1/2 years ago) that it was an 'original military food tray.' When I received it, the receipt said that it was either from the military or 'might have originated in the US Prison System.' There is a dent on one side of the tray and I always imagine my try came from a prison and one prisoner used it as a weapon to crown a fellow prisoner's gourd at the chow hall. TFW!
We don't have a 3 meal combo in a single MRE at this time. I didn't realize that the Russian MRE was a 3 meal one until I started to edit. My bad but TFW!
If the Russian MRE is full day(2-3 meals) it looks short of calories for anyone engaged in heavy labor especially in cold weather. What's calorie count in each?
You know i I feel as your the Bob Ross of mare's. From Fairbanks alaska. I appreciate everything you have done for our country. I thank you. Johnny mayer
That was really interesting. Seeing a direct comparison between a US mre and a Russian mre. The Russian one came with a lot more food, but Im guessing as a non military mre they arent constrained by a ridiculously low budget like military rations are. Really great review. :)
There's a Russian UA-camr who tries different MREs from different countries. From his experience, Russian military MREs don't have a diverse variety of dishes, they generally don't have exceptional taste but they still taste good enough and have enough calories to keep someone active for an entire day. Russians also don't use a lot of chemical preservatives so they don't have fancy stuff like soft biscuits or pizza, but at the same time Russian meals taste more natural, like something you (or your parents) would've cooked at home.
The Russian one was for 24 hours. The US one was for one meal. Times the US by 3 or 2. See which one has more. The US wins by quite a bit, and has much different varieties.
I know a lot of rnd goes into us mre but something about foreign ones i just tend to prefer. I wonder who has more overall menu variety though. The russian mre def is carb/fat loaded for their weather though. Soup is smart for water intake. Lots of quick snacks to shove into pockets too. Wonder if the russian ones needed more water
Yeah, the Russian one was supposed to be a 24 hour MRE. I'll be doing another review of one of those. That one was for a Thursday menu. The next one will be for a Friday menu. I'll treat it as a 3 meal, 24 hour MRE, the way it was intended. Stay tuned.......TFW!
If im not mistaken, on the front of the cappuccino package it shows that the chocolate is sprinkled on the cappuccino as like a garnish. I was stationed at Fort Drum (cold weather capital of the army lol) for 4.5 yrs and never got to eat a cold weather MRE. Great video brother!
You are correct about the sprinkling of the chocolate. I've had a few comments from Russians explaining that to me. I'm pretty simple when it comes to coffee.....give it to me black. This fancy stuff is more Ace's style. TFW!
Dear God I still have flashbacks of the winters at Fort drum coldest place I've ever been 2/22 infantry that's why I live down south and visit the Philippines frequently lol
Greetings from South Africa. I enjoy your videos a lot - really nice and calm way to compare unusual new things. Thanks. BTW The russians are delicate people with deeply ingrained sence of properness. The CHOCOLATE powder with the cappuchino is not to mix it in but to sprinkle it on Top, for added chocolaty flavor and nicer look. I know that probably in north america you have to settle for things like starbucks when it comes to coffee (they serve cappucino in a cylindrical cup and don't have nice chocolate powder, but in Viena for instance - this is a classic coffee type. I was seriouly impressed to see this. Respect.
Chocolate powder, which comes with instant cappuccino in a separate small bag, is usually poured into the finished coffee, on top of the foam, so that the chocolate melts and makes the foam even tastier.
Great video, interesting comparing MREs from different militaries/countries. Also, I noticed on one of your coffee cups, you have a "USS El Paso LKA-117" ships' crest on it. I'm retired US Navy - I was stationed on the USS El Paso from '89 to '93, 3rd Division/Gator Division (LCM/Landing craft/boats). Small world! Blue/Green team at it's finest! Thank you for your Service! EGA! (UPDATE/EDIT) Stranger than fiction: I just noticed the other coffee cup, lol. I deployed (on the El Paso) with the previous USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2), and for my final deployment, I was on the new USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) as an LCAC Craftmaster (Assault Craft Unit 4). Crazy! Again, thank you for your Service oohrah! Happy Holidays!
The Russian civilian had a lot more to it, but I think that in a situation where I would want one hardy meal to keep me going, the American one would be best. The upside of the Russian are the nuts and sweet things, they give you a nice kick and you can eat it on the run. Great video as always, merry Christmas for you and your family Sir, if we dont "see" you before.
Joao, I'm hoping to have one more out before Christmas. Merry Christmas to you as well! BTW, turns out the Russian one was a 24 hour meal so I would say it was a little 'light' on the calories for a whole day. I will try a comparison pitting a Russian MRE against another country's 24 MRE. Stay tuned! TFW
Funny how MREs are completely different to everyone that has had to eat them. The horse trading that went on at meal time was always the best part. Always something for everyone.
Of course, freeze-dried pasta from the USA is better and looks cool) our people need to learn how to do similar things, although there are similar ones and they are sold separately and are expensive! Well, but we have delicious freeze-dried potatoes 😄 we call such food: homeless food 😁 I think it will translate correctly)
"most international ones dont have enough sugar in their chocolate" Maybe think about that statement for a minute, If it's that obvious, that most ppl in the world dont need that much sugar
You were mistaken. You compared a one-time ration and a daily food ration. In the American one there is one meal, and in the Russian there are three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert. Comparison is incorrect!
i would definitely prefer the russian MRE which seems to me way healthier (nuts, peanuts, raisins, honey etc). The US-one looks like stemming from industrial food makers using lots of chemistry. As a side note: russians use to drink tea for lunch and dinner too. And cappuchino: the chocolate powder is supposed to be added at the end on the top. You guys seem never have heard about a cappuchino. Problem: given the quality of your food at home in the US, I doubt you guys are able to differentiate good food from bad food. Evidence is given by this vid. Greetings from France (Europe).
If I was wanting to survive and I could choose only one, I'd take the Russian one every day of thee week. The mains would be comparable on nutrition (probably), but the sides of those sunflower/nuts/dried fruit blows away anything in the US one for nutrition/protein and keeping one satisfied from hunger.... then the ALL ROUND epic winner of honey (anti-septic) and sweetener is just gold, not to mention the water treatment tabs as well as isotonic.... then the extra stuff.... its an easy win for the Russian MRE for survival.
Good observation. In fairness, I did not figure out the Russian MRE was a 24 hour one until I was editing the video. I'll have another video coming next year comparing 24 hour Russian to 24 hour from another country. USA does not have a 24 hour ration that I am aware of. The honey was of a quality that I don't remember enjoying for a long time. TFW

Нет. Это разовый паек, не суточный. Четверг это просто набор меню. Ещё с ссср есть такое понятие- четверг - рыбный день. Поэтому в нем была уха. А в суточном пайке 3 основных блюда и много закусок
Yeah I figured it was a 24 hour ration with 3 packs of crackers and 3 main dishes. The American one was a single meal.
Back in the USSR Thursday was understood as fish day. Therefore there was ukha fish in them. But in the daily packet were three basic dishes and many side items".

That sounds delicious. Thanks for the tip and TFW!

IDK if makes difference, but this particular Russian MRE is not military MRE. Also, it should cover a full day (this one is planned for Thursday).

I appreciate the use of the tray. Very few MRE reviewers understand the importance of the tray. Well done.
TFW!
The chocolate granules are supposed to be put on the top of the cappuccino after you mixed it with water.
Great video again, y’all nailed the comparison. I do a lot of traveling and it’s always great to see a new video pop up.
Michael, great to hear from you. TFW!
The Russian one is breakfast, lunch and dinner in one bag. You would have to use three US MRE's to compare.
Yeah they don’t have anything to compare to USA mres
We don't have a 3 meal combo in a single MRE at this time. I didn't realize that the Russian MRE was a 3 meal one until I started to edit. My bad but TFW!
If the Russian MRE is full day(2-3 meals) it looks short of calories for anyone engaged in heavy labor especially in cold weather. What's calorie count in each?
Thanks Grampa 😎 you are so awesome we all appreciate your help around here right on Brother's from Alaska 😊

That was really interesting.
Seeing a direct comparison between a US mre and a Russian mre.
The Russian one came with a lot more food, but Im guessing as a non military mre they arent constrained by a ridiculously low budget like military rations are.
Really great review. :)
Christine, thank you for your kind words. I'm happy you were able to see it right away. TFW
@@whysix3417 The packaging of the Russian MRE says "Thursday". There are 7 different types of packages :)

Respect.
My problem is that I don't appreciate the 'fine' coffee thing. I drink mine black. So there is that. TFW!
Subbed. This man seems great.
Thank you for your service. God Bless you sir and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I know the old Russian military ration packages usually provided 3 meals with each package.

Chocolate powder, which comes with instant cappuccino in a separate small bag, is usually poured into the finished coffee, on top of the foam, so that the chocolate melts and makes the foam even tastier.

So do the cold weather mre still have the Tabasco bottles? I haven't seen those in years thought they went with the dodo
Funny how MREs are completely different to everyone that has had to eat them. The horse trading that went on at meal time was always the best part. Always something for everyone.
I'd love to see closeups of all the packaging during a video of this type :D
Who else was expecting the Russian MRE to just contain a big bottle of vodka and some cigarettes ?
Is it not? 😮

Of course, freeze-dried pasta from the USA is better and looks cool) our people need to learn how to do similar things, although there are similar ones and they are sold separately and are expensive! @@MeAncient looking forward to it brother 😅🍻🍻
As a Cavalry veteran 2005- 2013 I am glad I found this channel and yall are making me crave an MRE. 😂
i would definitely prefer the russian MRE which seems to me way healthier (nuts, peanuts, raisins, honey etc).
I love these videos. We all need to hang out one of these days when my health gets better.
I hope you get to feeling better, Matthew. TFW, as always.
TFW

The Russian MRE has some real food. If I had to venture a guess, living on the Russian rations for a month will leave you healthy while I do not think that anybody over forty will survive the US rations without serious harm. Somebody should take notes.
I lived on US MREs back in the 80s for a month. Didn't do too bad. I was sick of MREs though. TFW!

I’d would think you add the chocolate on top of the Russian cappuccino…. Almost like you’re putting cinnamon and nutmeg on top.
On the fish soup…. If I’m desperately hungry & the soup I don’t really like, I’d might take some potatoes and dip / mix it with the soup.
You can take cracker & put a bit of honey or jam on it then add some raisins, nuts, sunflower seeds as well
