This is a tough episode. 1999 I had a 10 yo mare, severe founder we tried for four months to save her, we couldn’t. It was heartbreaking. 9/9/24, my last of 4 fjords, who we had been treating for Cushing’s for 6 years, had a very hard time with the heat of the summer, had foundered. We were present at her birth and present at her passing. She went quickly and we don’t have to worry about her having a bad winter. 38 years of having Fjords is done. We were blessed with these ponies, but the barn is now empty and it so hard to look out to the pasture and it’s empty. I give you all so much credit for making the hard decisions and providing for the horses what their owners could not. Thank you.
I saw a really cool idea for blind horses and cattle. A solar fountain floated in the water trough to make splashing noises, wind chimes by the stall entrance, and small solar powered white noise makers along the fences. As well as a seeing eye buddy.
Poor Janis, but we all new that day would come. She has been so strong for Bobby this time. She is an outstanding mom. Now you are painfree. Thanks to Pauly and dr Kristin, dr Pillman and all your staff on Pony tails for making her last time so good. Now Bobby needs all the care he can get. You are doing the best for this horses. Love you for that. Bless you all
Poor Janis. You guys did your best for her, and you saved Bobby. Nothing left to lose. Safe travels, Janis. So sorry for all of ypu who have been doing the hard work of caring for her every hour of every day, and may her memory bless you.❤❤❤
Compassion fatigue is something all rescuers face. It's a real struggle. That's why the circle of life network is so important. They have other rescuers they can reach out to for support. They also have to learn that taking time for themselves, away from the rescue is really important.
I don’t think it’s horrible to keep your horses tail, but if you’re going to throw them away instead of doing the right thing as an owner ,then you don’t deserve the tail!!!!!
@@sandysgrandgirlssandysswee2492 Apparently it is not terribly uncommon for an owner to say their last goodbye at a euthanasia provider and take the tail. Then the unscrupulous provider takes the horse to auction to make a few hundred - and not provide the service contracted.

So I'm all for saving horses that will live a productive life. But buying horses that are so crippled is not in the best interest of the animals. Why do rescues do this!?
Because they are having compassion on animals that may be suffering and whose previous owners failed to give them proper care. Such animals may need euthanasia or may be able to be helped to become useable horses or pasture pets. Their purpose is to help animals, not to buy those they can profit from.
Trudy I completely agree! Just because an animal isn’t capable of having a decent quality of life long term doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be rescued if only to end their suffering
The average looking healthy horses have better chance to find an owner on the auction, so those horses can skip the shelter and go straight to their new owners. The crippled ones have no chance for that. They need treatment and therapy, and after the rehabilitation in the shelter they can go to owners too. Some of them are beyond saving, and that is sad, but that cannot hold the shelter back from trying. The same symptom could mean many different things, problems and without checking them out properly you cannot tell at the auction, if a horse can have a painfree life in the future.
Because the horses that they are “buying” are the sick and broken horses that will be bought by the kill buyer if the rescues don’t outbid him. When they are purchased by a kill buyer, they get transported across the boarder and are then sold to a factory and killed in a very inhuman way to make pet food and glue. That is why these rescues buy these horses at these auctions. They have the best care possible, and that they have a chance a home with a family that will love them. Horses they bring back that are too crippled or sick are humanely euthanized, which is way kinder than what they would have faced had the rescue not gotten them.
