There are certain items that you can take to the quarter masters and they will clean it for you for free. As long as you have that stamped copy and the bag is still sealed they have to take it. That list has gotten smaller and smaller over the years. I always took a stiff bristled toothbrush, and a black marker with me when I cleared. Oh that's dirty, I'd pull out my toothbrush, brush the pretend dirt off if it and say, it's all clean now. It worked almost every time.
Due to the hostility you encounter at CIF, I've always felt that the way they train CIF personnel is by luring them to a briefing, then trapping them in the building and setting it on fire 🔥 🔥 🔥... whoever makes it out gets to work at CIF.

Ages ago the CIF issued me a flack jacket that was sooooo old the dye was seeping through. I told them to give me another one, but that was the only o e they had in my size. It sat in the bottom of my locker for the entire year (Korea) When I went to turn it in they didn't want to accept it saying I damaged it.

I was in 7th Infantry Division when we got the order to inactivate; my battalion was among the first to shut down and we were given only 30 days to make it happen. At first, the CIF/equipment turn-in folks were super reasonable and even helpful as they'd heard a rumor they'd be fired once the unit shut down unless their performance was stellar. At the end of the first week, they got called to a union meeting where they found out nobody was getting downsized no matter what.
The Monday after the meeting the turn-in civilians opened for business about an hour late and went back to being dicks rejecting gear for the most minor dings.
They told me to clean my sleeping bag. I came back the next day and they said I did a really good job cleaning it. I didn't even touch the damn thing. It stayed in my car all night.
This item still in the plastic is dirty.
My worst fear clearing CIF was that last drop of water that always fell from your canteen lid that somehow stayed there in the rubber seal forever..and only fell out on clearing day

So true, When I got out and some missing smaller items you think no big deal until my support Sgt. gave me the prices. I sure tried to find them at a pawn store before paying army prices.
My convoy was hijacked on its way over to Bagram and it was supposed to be cleared from records and hand receipts. I went to process out 4 years later and CIF pulled it up and asked for IOTV, NVGS, and 2 Kevlars. Tried to charge me $3800.
Yeah SPC, I was carrying that equipment and was able to squeak by all these years... 🙄
NVG's?! Wow...we had to check those out at the armory, as well as other really expensive equip. That stuff wasn't standard issue for us.
Bruh NVGs never went home with anybody. That shit was in the armory or dummy corded to a canteen cup in the field.

Yup. I had every single original thing they issued me after 5 years at Drum (I took care of my stuff). Turned in a winter ski mask and they were like, "we don't issue these type". So I had to go out and spend $5.00 on one like they wanted. It's not like I was trying to turn in an Alice pack in place or a Ruck sack.

this video is true!! I actually ended up using the blanket they issued me in the barracks. Well i toss and turn in my sleep a lot so the one night that I used it ended up ripping a huge hole into the blanket. Yeah the blanket was felt like material and cheap as hell. Well wheb out processing and clearing the barracks they gave me a 48 dollar statement of charges for that damn blanket. Luckily I saw the same blanket at the PX for 6 bucks and was able to buy it and turn it in. Watch your back when you get out they will try and take the last paycheck you earned.

Should have kept it. I still have my green bag, and didn't pay a dime to CIF for it. An NCO I knew suggested they'd take items in trade, so I went down to clothing and sales for a couple canteen covers. Even stuff I kept they wrote off.
That's why my team leader made me dump all my shit on the floor when I got to my unit and we made sure I had everything. then he had me do it with the new guy we got two weeks later. Cif didnt even give him a tarp but they put it on the receipt. Fuck cif

When I got out I turned in all of my equipment and was cleared by my supply seargent only to get a letter in the mail saying I owed the US army over 2k for not turning in any of my equipment.
I bought brand new gear from the PX still wrapped in the original packaging with receipts. And they still refused a couple of those items.
It sucks that I found out later on I could of bribed a CIF worker 50 bucks and he would of accepted everything no questions asked. That would have been well worth it.
At the end of basic training I went to turn my equipment in but they charged me for an extra ammo pouch that I never recived. When I was issued my equipment me and a couple of other recruits told the Drill Seargeants that we weren't issed a second ammo pouch like everyone else but they said its fine and to sign the paper that said we had everything.
I went through it 3 times cause they kept kicking back stuff saying it was dirty. By the third day they told me my shit was still wet. I about lost my shit until another dude came to the desk and said "These are cool" and signed me off.

LMAO facts. When I got out way back in 05 at Ft. Polk had those glasses with a Jheri Curl mullet.
I had something issued to me that was still sealed! I never opened it! They said I needed to take it out and wash it! I waited for over an hour at CIF only to be told this and had to come back the next day to return it. I took it out the bag and returned it the next day without washing it and they accepted it! CIF was the most stressful part of out processing.
I had to work at the CIF for an entire week once, my knees got so sore from all the goose stepping.
Don't even get me started on canteen cups and woobies.

they told me I needed to spray paint the bottom of my dufflebag with tan paint. Luckily another soldier there hooked me up with some tan spray paint. I sprayed it in the parking lot and turned it in still smelling like paint
CIF turn in was by far the biggest pain in the ass part of clearing. No matter how much you cleaned it the first time it was always "dirty/greasy" according to the staff. A week later upon returning it was accepted without fail, and I never touched a thing from the previous week.
I made a "financial arrangement" with the guy at cif and he took everything no questions asked.
I had a unusual CIF experience that strangely enough, didn't happen at CIF, but at my E-5 promotion board in S.Korea. The NCO's there said I lost my entrenchment tool with case out in the field training. I said "yes Sargent " to that. They said you're going to have to pay for that. Again I said yes Sargent. Back in 84' it costs around 35 dollars which I paid immediately after my board review thru my unit to HHQ 2ID. One final thing they said was this: If you're in the Army long enough to make the E7 board, this will bite you in the ass. I was thinking during that time: I won't be in the Army long enough to pass E5, let alone anything else. When I processed out of S.Korea, this situation didn't even come up because I already dealt with it. ONLY IN THE ARMY.
They charged me for my acu cover because I wasn't going to turn it in all faded and had blood on it from Iraq like yall really wanted that back. Tried to charge me for the worn vest because the plates had worn holes in the corners and also had blood on it I couldn't get out. How the fuck can you charge me for the blood when yall sent us there smh.

That sucks man. In 05 Iraq I had blood all over my vest boots uniform top bottom , my unit supply made me turn that shit in issued me new gear . But my guys were pretty cool plus it was supply not CIF .
Air Force Veteran here. I've worked for the Marines and Navy as a civilian (not contractor) and currently work for the Army. Even though I'm on the civ side of things, it really does seem like the Army is the only branch that wants your soul......
CIF just issued me all digital gear for OCS. By the time I ship out in October, it will all be phased out and OCP will only be authorized. Thanks CIF
I had part of an LBE "grow legs". Was very surprised to walk out with only like $36 in charges. Our CIF at Bliss was actually pretty good. I've heard it's a lot worse on other posts though.

I hope you kept your final clearance papers with the stamp on it. A friend of mines Dad was out for ten years, and got a bill from the Army saying that he owed them for a piece of TA-50 that he didnt turn in. He was able to produce his stamped clearing papers and they left him alone.
I was lucky as hell during my exit, because the Battalion supply NCO who was on duty, happened to be good friends with one of my buddies I knew back in MOS training. Nearly half my gear was either missing or tore up when it came time to turn it in. I made off like a bandit!

We had an ROTC cadet doing the CTLT training after advance camp. He was heading back home and I took him to CIF before I took him to the airport. They tried to pull that, "this is dirty" stuff on two items that were STILL IN THE ISSUED WRAPPERS. I looked the GS up and down (in that special way NCOs get taught to look at LTs who do something stupid, something I saw several times AS an LT) and said, "Look, this kid is going to the airport in less than 2 hours, no matter what. You can accept this gear or we'll just leave it on the ground and I'll explain it to his cadre once he gets back. But he isn't paying for it, because he has no money." We both just stared at each other for a solid minute. Finnly without a word, the GS takes the slip, checks if off, and signs it, throws it at the cadet and walks away. Same thing happened six months later with a solider who had orders from the I Corps Commanding General to get him off the post that day. Same thing, I told the GS, "Fine, YOU call the CG and tell him why this soon-to-be-civilian isn't off the post today..."

I can relate to outrageous prices. I had to pay for so much shit that I lost over the years. A poncho alone was like 80 dollars. I said fuck that and went a surplus store to get replacements which is way cheaper
The things I did for that CIF stamp on my check out sheet. I made like 12 copies of my check out sheet after I got that stamp.

My retired NCOIC did that LMAO. When the S4 NCO contacted her because CIF said that she did not turn in something, she emailed the receipt with "Not my monkey" as reply. We just print that out and send it to CIF (I can only imagine their reaction)
I have bought brand new gear from the PX with tags still on it, with receipts, and CIF said it was unserviceable. I suggest you go to CIF on a Friday if possible to try and catch them in a good mood.
Turned my gear in at CIF at the end of BCT. I barely washed my gear and somehow got a pass on all of it. I watched other dudes go through 5 million times before they finally got a stamp. They washed their gear a lot more often than I did. CIF is a backwards world....

My roommate had friends over, either he or one of his friends stole my plates the DAY BEFORE I WENT TO CIF. We shared rooms, same closet, bitched all the time about how unsafe that was. Unit did nothing, I owed like 3 grand to CIF because of it. Didnt get any of my final paychecks and still had to pay them back.
I remember when I got to CIF, they rejected every item I tried to return. I told them I am keeping all my stuff, and to charge me then. The bill was $1200, and luckily I skirted by that bill, because someone in CIF fucked up and forgot to sign something.
I had to turn in my DCUs when I out processed. Cleaned them and had them just in case they pulled a dick move like that. They went over them and said they weren't clean because I had a stain from the preservative from new track shoes on them. Told them I had washed them they were clean. The guy called over 2 other people to join him telling me the same thing. I maintained that it was a stain (smaller than a dime that is how petty they were). They scratched at it and said (grudgingly) it was a stain and would have to throw them away for being unserviceable, for a stain smaller than a dime. I said I could keep them if they were just going to throw them. At which point they said I would be charged $30 each piece if I kept them. But it was free to me if they threw them in the trash which was sent to be incinerated so nothing would end up on the market. Just a year later other guys coming back from the sandbox got to keep their DCUs and were charged nothing for them.
Pro tip: If you can scrape by for a bit, buy everything used at General Jackson's or equivalent surplus store off post and store your basic issue shit until it's time to turn it back into CIF. If you are ETSing, sell your used shit back to the army surplus store. Even then, CIF will probably give you some shit over a few items, even though it's in the exact condition they issued it to you in.

I lost everything including loaner furniture during a typhoon in Okinawa. They gave me a pittance for my lost items then charged me for the loaner furniture that was at least 25 years old. My last check ended up being $200 bucks.

Caught CIF messing up several times.
When I was clearing in Korea (2001) they asked me for another wet weather top. Yes, ANOTHER. I asked hadashi why the hell they would have issued me 2 wet weather tops. No answer. Luckily, I had the original issue document and asked him to show me where it was. Of course, there was only 1 wet weather top.
At Schofield Barracks CIF tried to tell me to clean my IOTV because it was stained by the red dirt. I told them it was cleaner than it was the day they gave it to me and here is the picture of me getting it issued at CIF 3 years ago as proof. They took it back.
Also had a couple of items randomly appear on my record over the course of my career. I asked them to show me where I signed for the item. Of course, they couldn't and had to erase it.
When I retired out of Rucker last year, they were super cool about everything.
Take pics of all your stuff *at* CIF when you get it issued and look at your record every now and again.

Just a little advice. Show up to cif 30 min prior to end of day, and go up to the oldest male solder that is e-4 or below.... oh make sure there is a cold six pack of good beer mixed in with your ta50. Ijs I cleared CIF first try, and it only took 15 minutes ( zero statements of charges ).

Took me three tries to get through CIF when I got out in 1986.
I had a ruck sack I scrubbed the shit out of for a week straight because every time I brought it back they refused it saying it was dirty. Finally I was so mad that I took that thing to a car wash and sprayed the shit out of it with hot soap and water.
I bring it in and the guys like "yeah I guess it looks alright"

My last assignment was a joint assignment and it was interesting listening how the Army treated its personnel when they retired compared to the Air Force. When Army personnel talked about turning in its issued equipment I always thought of this video 😂
