i liked my mercury so much when i had enough money i ordered a 1967 mercury comet with the 427 engine 4 speed and posi. it was a great street car and i raced it at our local track a few times.i needed a scattershield to race it so i sold it and bought a hurst amx. jim
Jim, I appreciate you taking the time to share those memories! The Comet sounds like you had to pull some strings to make that happen in more ways than one :) Really appreciate your viewership as well - Sam
Super rare Mercury. There are so many good vintage Ford performance parts on this car I don't even know where to start. This was a hot little package in 1962.
Absolutely beautiful! 405 4 spd! Boggles the mind! Amazing condition for being put up in a barn for 30 years! Ford- made spaceship! Same roofline as the Thunderchicken! Always loved the taillights! With a 405, that's usually all you saw of it! Nice find!
My father was a big proponent of big block full-sized fords. I have as a young boy ridden in many R Code 427 Fords riding to the lake on weekends. This beautiful Mercury brings back a lot of memories of those days.
My grandparents had a car identical to this in the mid eighties when i was a little boy. They daily drove it. The only difference was that theirs had blue interior, and the 292 automatic. I have so many memories of stretching out and going to sleep in that long back seat. We lived way out in the country, and a long way from town. So i napped to and from every trip to the grocery store. Lol. Thanks for posting this trip down memory lane!
Nice, thanks for sharing. This was a real unusual one with the high performance goodies from the factory of course. Please is mine, thanks so much for following Samspace81 Bryan
samspace81 Absolutely. You always seem to feature such amazing cars. I don't know how you do it. You have featured some of my all time favorites, and also in real survivor condition too (some of them.) Keep up the Great uploads, Very much appreciated from this end = )
What a car!! Super rare, awesome 406/4-speed and it's in remarkable condition for being unrestored, especially the interior. Almost a shame to fix it up, but it'll look even better all cleaned up and sorted out. I love all the little details on cars from this era; in fact IMO '60-'65 was the peak for American cars, period.
Amazing car! Love the "sleeper" look. Hope the new owner runs an oil like Amsoil with a high ZDDP concentration to keep the cam and solid lifters from premature wear. A lot has changed while the old gal was napping!
I’m a Mercury guy 68 XR-7 G Cougar since 83. That was and is a gorgeous time capsule. Thanks for sharing. I spotted what looked like a 66 Chevelle at the end.
Incredible car. I can remember as a kid seeing a Ford advertisement in a car magazine. It was a overhead picture if a car smoking the tires for about 50' , "The Ford 406".
This is a super clean, original example of full size Ford/Mercury muscle. The high performance full size cars from the early to mid 60s we're kind of a precursor to the muscle car era. My personal favorite full size muscle cars were always a 63 1/2 Galaxie R-Code 427, a 62 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty, a 62 Chevy Bel Air 409/409, and a 66 Chevy Biscayne L72 427. Always liked the 64-67 Ford Galaxie 427's too and the 66 Ford 7 Litre with the 428. The Ford 428 was a torque monster with good street manners but the raucous, solid lifter 427 was a high strung race engine that was de-tuned a bit to be street legal. The 428 was definitely better for everyday street use but for all out performance the 427 was one of the best high performance engines ever made. It's right up on the same level as the Mopar 426 Hemi
1962 mercury monterey 2 door hardtop , was my very first car that i bought with my own money. i loved that car. i paid $75 for it. it was rusty, on four flats, and the muffler was about rusted away. i put dual glasspack mufflers with straight black pipes, got it tuned up, put brakes on it, and hit 6 pine trees in a row at 55 mph on the way to work one morning. but when i had it tuned right , i had blown the doors off of a new 1986-87 Lincoln Mark vii one night.
Reminds me of a '63 Mercury Meteor with a 260 V8 and 2 speed automatic. Very different just 1 shift, other half of 1 barrel cutting in. Single year front suspension, wheels moved up and down, and rearwards. Dad got it cheap because front end was out of alignment and swerved left badly when let go of wheel. Only one old guy at front end shop ever worked on one. Wish I still had that car.
My 63 came with a 64 1/2 automatic floor shifter, bucket seats and a console ,from a 63 Comet style. And had a few pros tell me this is all factory. Same 260, but hooked to a floor shift. I haven't seen any others.
The Nascar engine was 410 Hp. Saw one in Lebanon, Indiana. Muscle car show around the Court house. 62 Box top Ford Galaxie XLT in a Bronze color. Photo's on my old phone. I broke it. Never seen it again. I was born in 1960. Love those old Ford Lead Sled's. Maybe a 1961 Sunliner. Shawn
I'm old now but when i was in high school in 1980 we had real muscle cars! My buddy had a 1962 1/2 Galaxy 406 tri power 4 spd convertible. Bench seat with 14 inch wheels with red stripe. He paid $6000 US in 1980 and that was about $ 10 000 Canadian. Huge sums then but it rocked!!
My dad has a 62 Mercury Monterey.. His had a 352 in it.. It got to using oil really bad so he sold it to a friend for about 50.00.. Interior was immaculate... Next time take us for a ride in the 66 Chevelle SS..
Wow!! Great car! Well preserved too! I'm not sure what I would do with that car, leave it as is or do a frame off restoration & preserve all the original equipment on it.
My parents bought one of these from McClures in Anahiem...Had factory AC,power windows and duel master cylinder...My dad had dealer installed throttle body fuel injection...Never caused any trouble...During his ownership of the Mercury, he bought three Lincolns. On the 68 coupe he specified the 462 rather than the 460...He had the dealer install twin quadrapole throttle body fuel injection, a high lift Crane cam and lifters...Ford headers...Eaton torque converter and heavy towing package...Both cars were retained for years...The Mercury handled with great ease and had an engine with power in excess of 450HP...The Lincoln handled like a 66 T-Bird with much more power and road feel...Both cars had power and road feel that most could not believe...
onebigkahuna69 This was early 60's muscle, big huge heavy full size cars with big huge engines, fords and chevys with 406s and 409s Chrystlers with 413s, big huge Pontiacs with the 421. The GTO was mid 60's muscle, mid sized cars with big engines, Pontiac 389, Chevy 396 Chevelles
A friend of mine had a mid 60's GTO convertible and it exactly wasn't a small car.Now think of this what if the people at ford had stuffed a 390 into a 65 Mustang or a 396 into a early nova's at the same time of the first GTO's?Or Chrylsler sticking a 413 into an early Valiant.?I'm a ford guy BUT I love and appreciate ALL of the old Muscle of that time.I think that is why people like the AC Cobras big engine in TRULY small cars.My dad had a 65 Galaxie with a 390 PI motor in it and had a Six pack put on it and he said it was fast until he came up against a Hemi Charger. My dad told me a story about us living in Nebraska and we were stationed at Offut AFB.He told me that he got off work on a friday and was headed home and this Charger pulled up and wanted to race.he said he got up to about 130 and started to think about his Family He said the Charger pulled in front of him and the backend squated down and it took off.He backed off and knew he didn't have anything for it.He told me that on that Monday he was at a Beer Joint having a few beers on the way home and people were talking the "Wreck" that happened that weekend.A car and he thinks it was the same one had hit another car with a Family in it and killed everyone. The speedometer on the car it had the been pegged at 160.I don't know how trues this is but for my Dad to say someone else beat him was something for him.lol BTW my first car was a 65 Galaxie with a 390 2BBl carb but it was pretty fast for a 16 yr old.
406 F.E engines pull like there's no tomorrow , I had one with a 6 pack . this one is nice but it needs to be rebuilt and the tappets and cam need attention . I have always said the early cars had BALLs weather Ford , Mopar , or Chev these cars were the true factory muscle on the streets . 406 was Fords answer to the 409, the one weakness was no 4 bolt mains in the 406 , the later 427 was the end result . The 4 speed was a Borgwarner super T 10 which was also a good trans behind a 406. Thanks for posting
In NASCAR racing , they quickly found that you couldn’t weld the main caps on a 406 tight enough to keep from running over the crankshaft at the RPM required to be competitive for a whole race. The 427, however- built for endurance at LeMans - was an entirely different story.
I have bought smokers that just needed the oil returns in the heads and block cleaned out with a clothes hanger after running mixed with kerosene.. ( The oil will sit up top and get sucked down thru the valve guides ) Lots of the oil years ago had a lot of sulfur in it (QS) and was thick, Oil company's used steam to get it out of the grounds, quick trips that hardly had enough time to run the engine long and would produce thin layers of silt on the walls. Sorta like people with bad diets clog their arteries ! Change the oil filter a few times after the cleaning.
That solid lifter camshaft sure lets itself known lol I have a 62 galaxie 500 2 door with a 406 dual quad carbs factory cast iron headers and 4 speed all factory . I bought for $5000 on Craigslist if you can believe that. Clean too.
+samspace81 I would love to have the money to own a nice jewel like this. I would drive it as it is and enjoy it until, the money was saved up to restore it. I never heard of this engine that is in this car. Its always the 429 0r 460. I would love to hear it opened up, to hear them three carbs set off that really unique tune. Thanks for sharing this video sir. I learned something new today, about a very unique car and and engine. You have a wonderful day.
Yes!! This one was a lot of fun to work with, the owner not so much! Typical car flipper. Thanks for checking it out Samspace81. I've moved out of sales.
He said the car was a "G" code but the data tag on the driver's door pillar clearly shows 2Z, for 1962, Z was the code for 390 although it does sound like a solid lifter engine and the exhaust manifolds look right for a 406,,,,,,
If I remember correctly the FE block 406 was the same bore as the 427 but had the 390 crank. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. This is a very cool variation with factory solid lifters, hot cam and 3 x 2 Holley kit
does it have 6 or 8 lugs beins how it was designed for towing? I saw a video of an early gto looking car that had 8 lug wheels...from the factory...I had never new they existed
Awesome car. My Dad has the same color scheme on his '62 S-55. Only his is automatic with the 390 ci. I did notice that this car had an alternator instead of the generator that should be on it. Wonder when it was changed out? I believe Ford didn't start using an alternator until late 64 but I could be wrong.
jerome bill , most all vehicles have an alternator after about 1965 or so. I'm sure the car you drive has one also. That is unless you drive an older 60's car. I'm not sure as why they went that way. But an alternator is lighter and smaller and can put out a lot of amps.
Alternators are used in modern automobiles to charge the battery and to power the electrical system when its engine is running. Until the 1960s, automobiles used DC dynamo generators with commutators. With the availability of affordable silicon diode rectifiers, alternators were used instead.
She really deserves a rebuilt to stock original and perfect. Engine was a little tired. The man that bought it is doing just that! I sure hope he chimes in on some of this. Its going viral. - SAM
Okay yeah,... that's at least a quarter of a million dollar car! I have another one for you. A 63 Meteor with buckets seats and console, ( that looks exactly like the 63 Comet buckets and console) and an automatic floor shift, that is exactly like the ones the 64 1/2 Mustangs came with. I have checked seven ways to Sunday, and everyone has said my interior is bone stock. No S33 ( or any other numbers on the outside of the car, but a rare 280 fender badge, right behind the front tire, on the lower part of the fender. Just like the Galaxy 390 fender badges. Yes, I do have the extra b- pillar badge
@@samspace81 it looks like Mercury was experimenting, in order to bring up sales. I would think, that someone switched the interior, except for two things. One,...the Meteor interior is shaped a little different, then the Meteor,...and, Two,...those unusual 280 fender badges.
well I learned somethin today. never knew ford had a 406! but man is that ever a sweetheart of a car! hope I can own one someday! (and that's comin from a guy who grew up in a mostly GM/Mopar family! lol)
In 1965 I bought a 61 Ford Fairlane 2dr. Highway Patrol Car with duel quads , 4spd. and factory 2:02 gears with a 160 M.P.H. Speedometer that I buried many times on the Massachusetts Turnpike. If You ever find one, buy it no matter what You have to sell to get it.
Looks like piston rings are stuck or just worn. Blue/grey smoke... I used to own a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX; 440 4 speed and 4.10 gears. Often would start in second and shift to 4th at about 20 MPH.
sweeeeeeeet ! what is the long throw switch used for by the drivers right knee ? I noticed the switch goes to the right when the brakes are used. what are those 6 knobs used for ? #1 Lights and 2-6 ?
I noticed that too, always resting on it or halfway depress while coasting, drives me nuts. I gre up with a read 4 door, dad took the duals off because they kept rotting out and he was cheap.
i liked my mercury so much when i had enough money i ordered a 1967 mercury comet with the 427 engine 4 speed and posi.
it was a great street car and i raced it at our local track a few times.i needed a scattershield to race it so i sold it and bought a hurst amx. jim

Wow 427 and a comet caliente. Where did you fly it?
Awesome
Comet 202. Or a cyclone or caliente?

Love em. Why I went full time

Country Critters are not the problem. If you live in the city you keep your windows up to keep the real critters out if you want to keep your car.
👍 👍
Very handsome styling, inside and out. What a lovely old car, and quite a Beast too.
+MungoidHen This was a factory-ordered street and track monster for sure! Thanks for checking it out. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and my channel.

Hardly nondescript styling as one article pontificated long ago
Absolutely 💯
Thanks Gary

It's all about making a good machine better. As in straight out of the showroom door ready to run. And this vehicle is older than myself.
Great old Mercury

I was thinking of that song when I saw this too 😆
Crazy about a Mercury 406
Now that is one RIGHTEOUS ancientmobile! Nice and original too.
Memorable musclecar
I watched the whole video. It's not bad. Just a nice old car.. I hope you all enjoy for years to come. From Texas City TX USA 🇺🇸
Appreciate the old comment
Amazing how well that car has held up. Beautiful.
👍 🇺🇸
I HAD TWO SS-55 IN 1963.. NICE RIDE
+brian beaton Glad you enjoyed the video Brian. Did you have a his and hers thing going with two of them?
what a rare car indeed. hope it goes to someone who will treat this car special. glws.
This must be the last one of these to be found in such excellent original condition, Brings to mind the NASCAR of long ago. A++++ barn find.

Unique find. Like that styling.

Good memories, well except for the trees
One outrageous vehicle. And highly original as in unaltered from new.
I loved that car and wish I knew what was going on with it today. A guy in the midwest bought it to restore
Reminds me of a '63 Mercury Meteor with a 260 V8 and 2 speed automatic. Very different just 1 shift, other half of 1 barrel cutting in. The 406 needs a rebuild! Enjoyed

Very cool, pedestrian compared to this Monterey, the Chevelle was an upgrade for sure. Thanks Gary
Beautiful car Thanks!
Thanks for checking it out
Beautiful car! I just came across a 61' I am going to look at here soon myself.
You won the lottery
This old guy was a flipper he should have kept it!
4 spd on the floor with a center console. That is AWESOME!
So rare it's all restored now I hear
Sweet ! I do believe this is the only 406 I've actually seen, although I've known about the 406 since 1966 (when I was still a young'un)
Rare as hens teeth

Legendary car with special soul... Pretty one! 😁
Yes! Almost like seeing a ghost. Thanks so much for watching & following Samspace81 UA-cam
Nice one to restore
I agree 👍
Wow! I never even saw that body-style before....
You can make that one beautiful old car with some TLC. That would be one bad ass running car.
Great Mercury! The trunk is about 3 feet too long lol. Love that motor and 4 speed console super cool.
Great old car
you seem to find em, great video, this car was a runner in its day for sure.
Three under the hood and four in the floor. When Mercury was actually a different looking car.
This is the Grand Father of The Merc Cougar 427 Elimator 4 speed and 4.10 gears. So Cool So Mercury! SHAWN
What a smoker, gonna need a rebuild for sure!!!!!!! Nice car!!!!!
Shes all sweet today I hear
Nice car!
Looks like the guide seals or rings may need some attention, but for 60 years old, hey!
Adjust those rocker arms!
Agree with you 100. Thanks for following Samspace81 Jim
Thank you. I have one like it with the 406 with auto trans.
Nice James! Thanks for commenting too. Enjoy the Samspace81 channel.

The MJC sticker in back says it' from the Central Valley. Awesome!
Very cool
Loks like she might need some valve guide seals. Its puffin some smoke.

406 wasn't the most durable engine. In '63 Ford went to 427 cu a big improvement.
You it got a supreme makeover since this
I love the sound of these 406s along with the Chevy 409 and Chrysler 426 (both Max Wedge and Hemi)
You and me both! Sexy engines
Yeah and they are pretty fast...
Mercs were Badassed back i the day.
Yeah someone had some real balls that ordered this car the way it is! Thanks for checking it out.
Cougar Eliminator 428 Super Cobra Jet, best one
That solid lifter camshaft sure lets itself known lol I have a 62 galaxie 500 2 door with a 406 dual quad carbs factory cast iron headers and 4 speed all factory . I bought for $5000 on Craigslist if you can believe that. Clean too.
406 didn't come with dual quads.
Awesome
Had one of these in convertible version. Came with 292 V/8, two barrel carb. three speed manual on column and factory dual exhaust.
pretty much the exact opposite of this one haha Thanks for checking it out and sharing your memory
Awesome old Merc!
Sure is!
what a wonderfull car
It really was a cool rare one
spectacular find!
It really is! Would have loved to own that car
The interior of that car looked like an episode of "The Jetsons". 60's Vegas, Miami Beach. Perfect!!
+pneumatic00 hahaha It sure does! thanks for the great comment and enjoy my channel.
A very fine machine!
She was a rare bird
Very nice car, i have a similar with a 352 engine and automatic gearbox, runs perfectly.
+Tommy Owèn Thanks for checking it out Tommy. This is actually a one of one I have learned!
I'm an old school ford fan. The FEs were a great engine. Love the unmolested original car with patina. Engine is tired. Probably original
Yes!! This one was a lot of fun to work with, the owner not so much! Typical car flipper. Thanks for checking it out Samspace81. I've moved out of sales.
He said the car was a "G" code but the data tag on the driver's door pillar clearly shows 2Z, for 1962, Z was the code for 390 although it does sound like a solid lifter engine and the exhaust manifolds look right for a 406,,,,,,
You're looking at the wrong place on the identification number, look again. Absolutely the real deal
What a beautiful machine man ❤
If I remember correctly the FE block 406 was the same bore as the 427 but had the 390 crank. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. This is a very cool variation with factory solid lifters, hot cam and 3 x 2 Holley kit
Thanks Jim!
What a score.what a survivor.
I agree! Wish I could have bought it
Nice old man car. Love to Cruse mine
You don't have a 406 car with low gears like that, super rare
Beautiful car
I love it
A true survivor
Absolutely 💯
exquisite beauty something to cherish indeed !!!
Yeah bro...hit all the buttons on the 50+ yrs old radio and see if you can break the old String inside the tuner....Brilliant
Still working lol thanks for checking it out and enjoy the channel!
The Billdozier got a nice ride!
Lol
does it have 6 or 8 lugs beins how it was designed for towing? I saw a video of an early gto looking car that had 8 lug wheels...from the factory...I had never new they existed
That was a strictly Pontiac design to my knowledge
Real nice, that cars worth quite a bit I'm guessing.👍
I can imagine especially in 2023
Awesome car. My Dad has the same color scheme on his '62 S-55. Only his is automatic with the 390 ci. I did notice that this car had an alternator instead of the generator that should be on it. Wonder when it was changed out? I believe Ford didn't start using an alternator until late 64 but I could be wrong.
Kevin Hawkins why do you need a alternator on a DC vehicle?
jerome bill , most all vehicles have an alternator after about 1965 or so.
Ford had alternators starting in '63, I know at least on the Thunderbird they did,,,
Awesome thanks for sharing
4:11 gears means ab out 9 miles per gallon if you get that.
Very, very nice!
+Clarkecars Thanks for checking it out! One rare muscle car. Enjoy the channel.
see those cast iron headers ?
I hope it gets featured in Jay Leno's garage once its restored.
That would be AWESOME for sure. Glad you are enjoying the channel! Thanks for the comment.
Restore hell, it's this way once in it's life, original only once but can be restored dozens of times. The value is in it's present condition.
She really deserves a rebuilt to stock original and perfect. Engine was a little tired. The man that bought it is doing just that! I sure hope he chimes in on some of this. Its going viral. - SAM
samspace81
sam hunt uhh
I like what they parked behind myself.. It's a red 1966 Chevelle 396 Super Sport.
the 406 was just before the 427 which was made for nascar, and kicked everybodys butt
Great engines both of them
But seriously you have an awesome machine, and a Mercury too!
You got that right! Great cars. I appreciate you following the Samspace81 channel very much Michael!
Im gonna buy me a Mercury ,And cruise up and down this road.......................,again.
💯 👍 ❤️
How's the clutch?
Stiff
what a cool car ...have never seen one like this ....is that a trailer brake under the dash???...thank you great vid
Yes, that's a trailer brake control
Awesome. This car was sold privately and fully restored since I heard. I haven't seen it recently
@@samspace81 it looks like Mercury was experimenting, in order to bring up sales.
I would think, that someone switched the interior, except for two things.
One,...the Meteor interior is shaped a little different, then the Meteor,...and,
Two,...those unusual 280 fender badges.
oh my wow!!!! I need this thing!
I could use it too! But I'll settle for a diecast scale model.
Memorable rare car
well I learned somethin today. never knew ford had a 406! but man is that ever a sweetheart of a car! hope I can own one someday! (and that's comin from a guy who grew up in a mostly GM/Mopar family! lol)
+tyler geipel 406 available 1962-63, then was replaced by the 427.
+tyler geipel Well you better own this one, because there are no others like it. - Sam
I wish I could. Jeep repairs and student loans come first unfortunately...
Put a 428 crank in a 390, you come up with a 406.
Looks like piston rings are stuck or just worn. Blue/grey smoke... I used to own a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX; 440 4 speed and 4.10 gears. Often would start in second and shift to 4th at about 20 MPH.
Yes worn out
Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it! Enjoy the channel.
sweeeeeeeet ! what is the long throw switch used for by the drivers right knee ? I noticed the switch goes to the right when the brakes are used. what are those 6 knobs used for ? #1 Lights and 2-6 ?
That's a trailer brake control (old style)
Ebrake release, Lights, wiper, vents, lighter
👍 👍 👍
Now THERE'S something you don't see anyday let alone everyday. I've seen lots of Galaxies with 406/4spd./4:11...This is the first Merc...
Yes! Rare one
What is that lever under the dash coming out of the tan box used for?
Trailer brake, thanks Jeff. I appreciate your comment & would be honored if you would subscribe to the Samspace81 Classic Car channel.
Neat historical hot rod. Drive it.
So agree! Wonder where it is today?
Does he ever get off the clutch?
She found a new home, I bet the new owner is giving her hell now. :)
I noticed that too, always resting on it or halfway depress while coasting, drives me nuts. I gre up with a read 4 door, dad took the duals off because they kept rotting out and he was cheap.
Thanks, interesting,. A rare Classic…..
Glad you enjoyed it
