Having had to use my Byrna SD I can tell you from my personal experience that two of three Kinetic rounds to the chest and stomach area are extremely effective in dropping someone to the ground long enough for you to easily get away, even when they are wearing heavier clothing. I've also experienced just how hard they hit when I had my wife shoot me once so I would know how much force they hit with at 20 feet and I can tell you they hurt like hell so I can only imagine what two or three feels like. I also thing she enjoyed it too much... I haven't tried the Pepperball or Max rounds and I have no desire too since I know what Pepper spray and Tear gas feel like from my time in the military. A gun is always an option, but in most cases it could be considered by law enforcement and the local DA as being excessive force and could easily get you put away for a few years, especially here in California. The Byrna on the other hand won't get you arrested unless you stand over the guy and keep emptying clips into them.
No it's not a firearm under the definition of a firearm. It's a self defense launcher designed to give you the ability to get away to safety from an attacker. It also won't get you arrested for using excessive force when defending yourself. Here in California it's almost impossible to get a firearm much less a carrying permit. Great option for women too becuase my wife is a little shaky and nervous when it comes to firearms i feel like this would get her used to carrying one around without the dangers of an actual firearm. Also great for people who have had issues with the law and cant get their rights back or are in the process its a good choice until then or it could be your primary draw and your firearm be second so if you do end up putting someone down in the laws eyes you did gave the criminal a chance to run before ending their life in defense.
It pisses me off when people say that this is an option for women. These things can be as lethal as a gun if you hit certain areas. Especially for someone who cannot hit the broadside of barn door. Now your statement about people with issues with the law, I fully agree. Especially in blue states where they will take your rights for sneezing the wrong way and charge someone with a felony just so they cannot legally purchase protection. I have seen a DA in one of those blue states refuse to plea down a charge against a person because it would allow him to continue to have his rifles. He went to jury trial and beat it, but many don't have the resources to get an actual fair trial and will just throw away their rights by pleading to a felony when all they really did was a misdemeanor. Sometimes all the DA has to prove that you had a pocket knife in your pocket when you pushed someone to bring a simple assault to aggravated assault, which is a felony in most, if not all, states. Our founding fathers insured that the people have the right to keep and bear arms. I just wish they had the foresight to see this right could be in the hands of just one person call a DA and enumerated actual felonies that could take away your right to carry. such as murder, rape and treason.
Hello, this product looks great. I really would love to own one of these. Been watching reviews and doing extensive research on it. Seems to not have many faults. My only concern however is if I'm trusting this with my life potentially would it be able to stop a person or at least provide me with sufficient time to escape or remove myself from the threat. And I haven't really read any reviews or comments about the Byrna HD being used in a real life situation. So could you please let me know If it was used and how well it did or how reliable it was. I don't know about the OP part 1 video, but I went ahead and bit the bullet (pun?) and shelled out for this thing and coughed up an extra $40 for 5 Byrna Max rounds. At 20 feet I fired a eco kinetic round and it went through a firm and thick piece of cardboard box and almost exited. THe other side of the box has a deep dent in it. The regular kinetic round looks to be much harder and max rounds are supposed to burst on impact the chest. I believe that if two k rounds would not put someone on the ground in pain, you follow those with two max and they pop and just a little get on the perps face. They are toast for at least 10 minutes. I have felt the power of the rounds leaving the barrel and I was in a residential area that I stopped after firing just three rounds simply because of the sound. The thing is loud and if your prospective assailant is not all that smart, that sound alone will freak them hell out too and you may not have to pop them. Back to the just to power of the rounds leaving the leaving the barrel. I know for a fact that I would not want to be hit by one of those. If the person was not a good shot they hit you in the head or some other place and I cannot imagine where that would end good. So take into account, the sound, the power and the fact if for some reason the first two rounds do not bring down an assailant and all you have are kinetic, you can alway aim for the areas toward the head but be sure that the person is truly trying to hurt you.
In California we can only use kinetic solid rounds and not pepper balls. So for a Californian is it worth it with its low fps of below 300? I know the fsc can be tuned up which makes it more effective. But I like the realistic look the byrna has which my scare off an intruder without even having to use it. But I’m not sure which to get for home defense.

I’d say the umarex pistols are more ergonomic and have more options in ammunition, so I’d say they are the better carry for concealed but if byrna makes riot balls or something better than the pvc balls and can increase the FPS I’m might be getting one. (They are a smaller caliber but the riotballs I bought punched through both sides of my storage shed)

I would never carry my gun in my purse. I would carry under my clothes easy to access. If they get your purse they have your defense. Take my purse, I shoot them because I still have my weapon.
It can fit in some purses, just not small to small medium purses. However, like Kathy has said I agree with. Never have something that can be used against you easily in something that can be taken quickly.

Ive been trying to order an HMG airsoft.. they are all sold out.. Byrna, make an HMG styled defense weapon. lol
