Video podcast with Sawyer Products President Kurt Avery. Does the sawyer filter viruses? What is the best water filter for camping and hiking and backpacking?
You don't need the clickbait title. It insinuates that you're disappointed/upset with Sawyer. Kinda throws them under the bus for those scrolling thru the main page.
He gotta make money some how man, guy has a family. But I do agree with what your saying
I made it to 0:39
Pretty straightforward title if you ask me. Especially for an interview, of course somebody’s going to have a lot of questions to answer 😊
@@HappyMountainHippieYou can't see how it's dishonest? I'd never trust this UA-camr because he's shown he's probably a phony
that's all this guy does.
Sawyer is great. Been using them for years. Happy to see someone bringing their entire story to people. These clickbait thumbs/titles are getting out of hand.
Thanks Andy! Sawyer is great. Also.. this title/thumb brings intrigue and definitely doesn’t lie. They answered a lot of questions. I checked out your channel, and you seem to have quite a few thumbnails and titles that are very similar in nature.
@DanBecker it got me. But thanks, I already prefer sawyer, and I wouldn't have believed I could learn so much. I do appreciate getting intrigued to watch.
I watched a few videos on his channel. I'm not sure if it's clickbait since he's reasonably close to getting into accidents on his motorcycle. The real question @AndyAdventuring is why you're still riding on a motorcycle! I'd be too scared.
Dan, good interview. I'm also not a fan of the clickbait titles, but if your data supports clickbait bringing you more views, I won't castigate you further, especially when the interviews with companies like nemo and sawyer are solid. Keep up the good work.
@@DanBecker
It’s a clickbait title and you don’t need to do that. Your personality will keep people coming back. How about “What You Don’t Know About the Sawyer Filter” is just as intriguing as a title. I watch all your videos and subbed.
Agreed. Clickbait
It’s so cool that Dan is talking directly to these companies instead of just showing us their products
I would not have known any of this about Sawyer and yourself, Dan! Thanks for sharing this with us all. I hope Sawyer gives you a lifetime of free gear for this!😅 thanks! It was extremely enlightening and I am happy you all are helping the world! God Bless you all😊
Thank you both for this video, while doing my research in building my go bags, I decided on Sawyer products. Now I know I absolutely made the right choice. God bless you both for the work you do in helping the less fortunate people of the world. I have subscribed to your channel solely based on this video. It seems your principle are in line with mine. To the CEO of Sawyer, I would consider it and honor to volunteer with you company to help provide clean water to those who need it. God bless.
That line "No U-Hauls in heaven" is one of my Mom's favorite lines to use when criticizing greed and materialistic behavior. Love it!
I'm in the Uk and never heard this phase. What does it mean please? 🙈🤣
If I am not mistaken it is something like "you can't take it with you"....our Earthly possessions and gains mean nothing in Heaven. God Bless from the USA!
@suewheeler5795 just as @vzmichael put it. Spot on! Too many people have to have all kinds of unnecessary materialistic belongings, but in the end, when they ultimately die, they won't be able to take it with them.
One may argue that it can be passed down to the next generation, but I don't see that as a good thing either. If my parents were in a position like the owner of Sawyer, instead of setting up a trust fund for me to be lazy and not earn my own money, I'd rather see them doing great things like Sawyer is doing. Helping those who can't help themselves.
@@srbontrager @vzmichael Thanks very much.
The saying in the UK is "There are no pockets in shrouds"
@@vzmichael thank you
Doing my part. I give Sawyer filters as presents regularly. Never knew their back story. Now that I know it, ill give twice as many this year. Bravo gentlemen, bravo!
10 years ago. We had those hurricanes come thru. Sawyer saved my wife & I & our fetus developed son. When I travel or my mom travels, we ship Sawyer filters in our balikbayan boxes 📦 📦 📦
wow, what a truly humble company. i’m in the market for a filter as a hiker starting to travel longer distances. it will 100% be a sawyer. i love their whole mission. also amazing that he shed light on the filter/purifier choice!! go sawyer!!
I bought a Sawyer filter for a backpacking trip last year and was very happy with the performance. After watching this video, I will be using their filters as long as I'm breathing. Great product and I love all they stand for.
I had The Extractor when I was a kid! Now, I've got the Sawyer Squeeze when I'm on trail. Never knew the same guy invented both!ha I love seeing other people inventing things that have such a widespread and positive impact on other people. Glory to God!
I have always been a Sawyer guy and I plan to be a Sawyer guy for life, especially after hearing about all the stuff they do, God bless!
I don't even use a Sawyer filter but you better believe that I'll be supporting this company in the future!
That is an absolutely inspiring story and many of the explanations make a lot of sense
Thanks Dave! Been following your stuff for years. Appreciate all you do!
Great video. I've been using their filters since 2012. Only replaced them because I used them in freezing conditions. Love the product and their contributions. 100% trust in the filter. I backpack around 300 miles a year.
Cruised through the comments wondering if there’s anything about cold weather usage. Does Sawyer have any recommendations or strategies for cold weather? Any hacks other than carrying it next to skin in a baggie? I’d love to see a light weight “winter” case that you can dangle from your neck under clothes to keep it from freezing and getting you wet.
@@jordanslucas unfortunately there is not a better solution than keeping it close to your body warmth.
Discovered Sawyer when I was a manager in a big retail shop where I managed a local camping/backpacking department. As a company they were great to work with, took time to answer questions this camping nerd, and their products were dependable. As a former youth pastor myself, this was an amazing and uplifting video. Godspeed!
WAY TO GO DAN - when we met at PCT Days last year and we talked about the impact your connection with Sawyer has made. Yes this is God's hand moving everyone around for something so small that makes such a huge impact. Please showing the Sawyer Foundation for their good work and kindness.
This was such an "eye-opener"....I have used Sawyer for years but other systems as well..NOW...strictly Sawyer for me...What great information and interview, thanks so much for posting. I am sharing this with family and friends....!
Wow! Beautiful story. Thank you, Dan, for sharing their mission! Sold on Sawyer products for life!
Ironically just yesterday I became a first time buyer of Sawyer Permethrin because I already had a tick issue mountain biking this week. So happy to see this interview. What a great guy and great company! It makes me happy that I bought from them!
Fascinating man and company-they actually care about the world, how lovely!
It is great to hear Sawyer and Dan talking about what really matters. Taking care of people and making a difference. Caring for others is a blessing and so glad to see the "Mission" that Sawyer has take to help others in our world. Caring for others is a mission Jesus talked about, so as I venture into back packaging and hiking gear, Sawyer is a company and mission I want to support. We all can make a difference in varied areas. Glad to see that Sawyer is and has been a caring life partner for the world. Saving Lives and guiding people to have better lives is something we all want to see. Sawyer, saving lives by filtration technology can showcase the difference we all can make in this world. Nice Job Sawyer team....
Thanks for sharing. Without clean water nothing can be achieved.
Love the Sawyer water filter and permethrin, been using both for about the last 5 years. No ticks and no water issues at all. One of the best vids you've put up, keep up the good work.
I love this episode. As a former minister about to get my family (wife and 3 boys) into backpacking and looking at this filter I’m now more convinced I want to support it. Also, my friend and fellow colleague Shawn Clifton says she knows you Dan! Pretty cool! Love your videos. Keep up the great work!
From one Youth Pastor to another, thanks for sharing their story. Our youth group made some buckets a few years back with the Sawyer Minis. I had no idea that I would get into backpacking and have a Sawyer mini a few years later.
I bought 4 Sawyer Kits and after seeing this, will only buy them. Thank you and God Bless you all for your work!
I am so glad that you shared this story. I am a backpacker and have been using a Sawyer mini. I won't ever change. I'm a Sawyer user for life!!
Thank you so much for this. I have worked in Nepal with these filters and have seen the impact of clean water. So wonderful to hear the back story to Sawyer and here from the founder. To hear of faith put into action is so inspiring. Love your channel and hearing your testimony makes me even a bigger fan. Well done and keep it up.
I only bought a Sawyer mini last week because I lost mine. But I've been using Sawyer during my camping and hiking for years. It's the first brand I chose, I've had good fortune with it and now I'm comforted to know that it's helped millions overseas and locally here in this hemisphere in times of peril and strife. I'll continue to use it forward and I'll share the story myself now that I've heard it with my own ears and I've seen the video clips thanks to your channel.
Such a decent man, makes money but understands he is a part of the community and helps with an open hand, support this man and his company.
I've never had an issue. Knowing this is such a great guy, I'll buy all their products.
Absolutely speechless. What a wonderful presence in our world. Thank you for sharing and Thank you Dan for a well done channel and bringing to the awareness of viewers..
I’ve just recently started following your channel Dan. I’ve been using Sawyer filters since I started backpacking about 10 years ago. Can tell you without hesitation, I’m 100% on board with your and Sawyer’s vibe and missions. Keep spreadin’ the Good News!
I've been carrying a Sawyer Mini filter in my pack since 2012, and love it to death. Have bought more for car, home (x2 or 3), parents car, and plan to buy more to give to relatives. This video makes me feel even better about patronizing their company. They make a great product *that actually works as promised*, have good customer service, and actually care about their customers and product users. Barring anything catastrophic, I'm a customer for life... literally and metaphorically.
I've been using Sawyer filters for many years and on all of my long-distance thru-hikes, over 11,000 miles so it was nice seeing the history of its development, use around the world, and especially the explanation about filtering out viruses. VERY eye opening! Thanks for the interview!
Thanks so much for this video...I love my Sawyer filter but to a degree have trusted it blindly. This video has certainly increased my confidence and answered some of my questions. Especially around viruses.
Thankyou ❤
I have a new appreciation for my Sawyer Squeeze! ❤
Mission trips are one of the most satisfying things in this world to do. I have been on 4 , my youngest son has been on 7 mission trips. In Panama we built 2 10,000 liter tanks so they can collect water in rainy season to get through dry season. We set up system so first part of rainfall gets wasted and then collect cleaner water. Not the same thing Sawyer does but I love Sawyer products and use them often. I also have Sawyer water filters in the car, backpacks and go bags. Thank you Sawyer for your kindness. Thank you Dan. God bless.
I’ve purchased Sawyer products in the past, but I never really knew how much good they do. I’ll be supporting them with future purchases.
Ok, I’m in LOVE with Kurt and his wife and his company. Amazing! Thank you for sharing what this humble soul has accomplished and is doing for the world.
Wow, surfing tonight and came across this video. I had no idea of the Sawyer story but I've always used these filters and love them. Now I love them and the company even more. It's great that there are still people in the world who still love others. Fan for life for both Dan and the Sawyer company.
By far, the Sawyer Squeeze is the best value in a water filter today........ I could list the attributes but Sawyer does it best on their website. Check them out! Couple the Squeeze with a Cnoc 2 liter dirty water bag and let gravity do the rest. Back flush the filter when needed. How simple can it get? Keep the wet filter from freezing and you're good to go. Thank you Dan.
Well done interview with the Humble owner of Sawyer.............Be well.
Yep, Sawyer Squeeze has been my filter for years. I added the HD CNOC bag for a dirty bag to filter into a clean bag. The Sawyer Squeeze and CNOC bags go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Great story! I watched this 6 months after it was posted, but wow did I learn a lot about Sawyer as a company and about you Dan! Keep up the good work!
Kinda feels inauthentic saying you want save the world from water but hides their “secret sauce”.
Well, Sawyer just won a customer. Loved this conversation. "When you have a big God, you can do big things."
Bought my first one years ago (the mini) because it was innovative, lightweight, and easy. Bought the squeeze last year after seeing the story and learning it's not only one of the cheaper options, but still the best performing and the most mission focused. I have zero reason to buy elsewhere. Didn't need a new one, but the money is for a good cause and I could use the faster flow rate of the squeeze
When I first got into backcountry travel everyone was using Sawyer products. I saw lots of clogging issues on the trail. I did my research and bought a Steripen. The Steripen has never let me down. Over the years I have had to let others use it on the trail because their water filter clogged or wasn't working. Over the years water filtration has changed. It amazing to see what it has become. I know carry both my Steripen and filters that fit on my soft flasks. The ease of dipping into a creek to grab water and keep on going is great. The only downside of my Steripen is the time it takes to sanitize my water.
The Sawyer dries out without use and can get clogged without pre filtering. Both are fixable and preventable.
Dan, I appreciate your content and you posting this story. The story of Sawyer is so incredible. Keep up the great work of promoting their story. God bless you man.
I hav eSawyer water filters and Sawyer insect repellant and permethrin. Excellent products. 👍👍
I did not know until today the nature of the Sawyer mission. Impressive and humbling. WTG, Sawyer!
I’m loving these company head interviews… it’s nice to get a little backstory on some of the products that we use in the outdoors. Thank you, Dan.
This is such a wonderful company. I love my Sawyer squeeze and Permethrin that have kept me well for hundreds of miles in the woods. And the impulse behind it is to show the love of Jesus to people around the world is love in action
Wow, it’s so refreshing to see a company giving back to the extent they are. And as a faith based company that elevates it even more.
I feel good about my sawyer purchases even more now!
I started backpacking a couple years ago with a buddy on a trip we call miles for missions. We get people to sponsor us, kind of like a walk-a-thon kids used to do, so we can send money to orphanage ministries in India. It is amazing how God can make things like that work out for his glory and lets us tag along for the ride. I started watching you and Eric over the past several months because I've been trying to upgrade my gear and learn some things for a trip we are taking to the collegiate loop this summer. I have really enjoyed your channel, but I'm even more encouraged to hear some of your story and your heart. By the way my family is planning to move to Wisconsin shortly after that hiking trip this summer.
Thanks for providing information about Sawyer Products and their water filters. I've heard about them from Thru Hikers over 8 years ago. I have purchased several filters for home use, for those just in case situations... and for camping. Knowing the science behind a product also helps us sleep at night. Knowing the behind the scene Humanity Efforts also helps understand how and why. Skillet
My next water filter will be a Sawyer, now I’ve seen the unique quality and the world wide life saving work they do. Thanks Dan for sharing this story.
Love this messaging. We need more of this ❤❤❤
Yes Dan, there is a reason…for the connections and crossing paths we make in our lives. Awesome story and thanks!
I never knew the backstory and the detailed technology behind Sawyer. This was amazing!
So awesome, it’s amazing to see how God moves through different people on different paths. I started watching your channel about 2 years ago. I was researching for some camping/hunting gear. I just want to say it’s really cool to watch your channel evolve and grow in the direction you’re feeling led. It’s really encouraging to see other Christians making content that has a purpose and that I dont have to worry if my kiddos walk in the room. Thank you
This gives me even more reliance in my sawyer filters and now im gonna look for those bug sprays
I have bought and used Sawyer water filters for years. The water has always been excellent. Keep on keeping on, sir. God is good.
This is a great story. I like his message and mission. It would be great though if you could update the filters competition from katadyn and others are much much more user-friendly and last longer and filter more quickly. If you could make an updated filter that was easier to use Backpacking I would definitely support.
Good interview. I used a Sawyer Squeeze for my AT thru-hike and it worked well. I started out with the mini but soon upgraded to the full size model because the mini took too long to filter. I've had one problem with the Sawyer Squeeze. After just a few uses, I let a Sawyer Squeeze sit for a year or so before using it again. I didn't test it before hitting the AZT, and discovered that it wouldn't work at all. I couldn't get any water through even after backflushing and letting it soak. Maybe calcium buildup? I don't know, I had to toss it. So test your filter before heading out.
I've seen people recommend soaking the filter in vinegar for 1/2 hour and then back flush it with clean water. Or soak overnight in vinegar and then back flush.
There was even one guy on UA-cam who added a step where, iirc, he taps the filter or shakes it to dislodge any debris that might still be in there and flush some more.
Well.. I came here for the tech but im so much happier to learn the ministry part of both! God bless you brother and Sawyer! I havent even used my filter yet but I feel more confident to
i have only ever had one water filter and its a sawyer and im glad i have one now i know how they are helping people around the world keep up the good work sawyer. great video dan
Bearing one another's burdens. Nothing changes, until something changes. Blessings on your work and mission!!
Thanks for making the video. It's valuable that you brought the backstory of Sawyer to everyone's awareness. It matters to me, so I went and bought a few Sawyer Squeeze filters after watching your video. I like when I can fund some good while buying things that I planned to purchase anyway.
thanks for these interviews
Thanks for listening
I love this new series, At first i thought it was going to drag on a bit. But you have so far knocked it out of the park. One of your best videos to date!!! Great work sir... This was enlightening on many levels. You are a good man Dan.. would be proud to hike along side you any time...
I’ve know for years about sawyers clean water campaigns in developing countries. Great work
I use Sawyer for years. Have 1 in each car, in my Military E&E kit, as well as in the house and my backpacking kit. The portion about the Viruses was very interesting and i am super glad to have that piece of information. At the end i just decided to buy a new pair of mini filters. Great product and great company.
Great product, im thankful for affordable water filtration.
Of the filters I have owned, I keep coming back to Sawyer. Thanks for sharing the otherside of the Sawyer company.
After treating water w/ iodine tabs followed by years of filtering itvw/ a heavy katadyne pump, finally got a sawyer and never turned back.
During the day while on the move, I just attach it directly to a dirty smart water bottle. On longer breaks and at camp, i connect it w/ adapters to gravity system. Scoop, hang, come back later. No more getting eaten alive by the skeeters, can do other camp chores, and easy to backflush with a ckean smart water bottle.
I had absolutely no idea the company did so much charity.
Amazing 👏 ❤
@AboveAverageMan97 yep, I sleep w/ it in my bag when temps will drop near or below freezing.
Thank you for this! Didn’t know you were a Christian and the mission of you and Sawyer are a blessing. Keep going 🙏🏻
Sold me on the Sawyer, bought the 4L bag and micro squeeze gravity package, works great!
I literally just went and put my QuickDraw up and broke out my Sawyer Squeeze. I won’t use nothing else! If it’s about our Daddy’s business count me in!!! Thanks for doing this video!!! And I can’t wait to see how God is going to start using you I feel like is a new season for you. From my perspective I’ve honestly felt like your been channel has been driven by a deeper purpose since what happened at the Grand Canyon.
Wow I am impressed with Sawyer more than ever now. I love their servant heart.
I dint know till I saw this video that the sawyer extractor was made by the same company that makes the water filters.
I still have an extractor from 1997 and it still works fine.
ETA
I aint sure because I no longer have it...
But I think I may have had one of their backpackin first aid kits back then too.
Only found your channel today…been looking at water filters! Super informative, gives me a good reason to go Sawyer?…and probably most importantly, has given me food for thought on my current relationship with God and makes me question some of my decisions in terms of good works or self satisfying good times! Thank you on both levels ❤
I bought my first Sawyer product after you told the story Dan.
I use the Sawyer mini, godsend when traveling, saves on buying bottled water or running the risk of dodgy tap water.
I did not think of using for traveling, thank u!
Wow! I have the original extractor kit in my backpack. I bought it decades ago. Thankfully, I never had to use it. I have the Mini, the Squeeze and the Home Filter. I just bought the Permethrin spray kit and the hard sports bottle with the internal mini filter yesterday. I'm a bikepacker and backpacker.
I would be very skeptical of the virus claims made here.
If it were the case that the Sawyer 0.1 micron filter removed viruses, why did Sawyer bring out a 0.02 micron purifier and the Sawyer S3 purifiers, specifically to remove viruses?
DYOR and you will discover that smaller viruses like Norovirus, Rotovirus and Polio would pass through the pores of a 0.1 micron filter. The first two can be found in surface water sources in North America.
The only mechanical purifiers which are independently tested and proven to remove all viruses are LifeSaver water purifiers and the MSR Guardian.
If Sawyer would change the composition of that famous white washer/gasket that always fails - they'd be golden. Wish they would use a different membrane or material for that part.
The newer washers have indents that help prevent them from falling out. For security, I just hold my finger over the end when I need to shake out water.
Great interview.
Thanks Dan!
Thanks Thom! Hope you are doing well over there!
@@DanBecker we’re doing good.
Well, we’re not just good, we’re good enough!
I use sawyer permethrin spray on all m outdoor gear and don’t have any issues with insects.
I think I would support sawyer and buy their products even if the product sucked. This company gives so much I feel so much better buying them. You’re hard earned money goes to a top quality product and also to helping people. How do you win more than that?????
Kurt is an amazing man with an amazing team. Sawyer is always my go-to. Thank you!
This is my favorite UA-cam video to date. Enjoy all of yours, but this hit deep. Thank you
Dan, I enjoy your channel! I've watched much of your content. I believe this is the first video I've commented on, You were a youth pastor for 9 years!? That's so good, I appreciate you sharing your heart here on the subject of faith! I have so many things I want to say to learn from you and commend your efforts. I appreciate you!
Thanks Dan. Keep up the story of providing safe water.
My daughter and I are preparing for our first backing trip. We will definitely use the Sawyer Squeeze, and I can my wait to tell her their story. Awesome!
Dan, please keep doing this! Sending so much love from your Christian brothers in the UK.
So over the years I have subscribed when I was prepping to backpack, other times I've not been subscribed as I wasn't even able to really walk with. Our a ton of pain..... I had been looking something up and this video came up. I don't know that I knew you were a Cristian... However after both Sawyer videos, I am encouraged an grateful to.know Sawyer is based in a place I didn't know they were
.... Many blessings
After watching the video i this the title is fitting, short and sweet!
Good product. Good people. Good motivation. My kind of company! Thanks for doing this interview Dan.
Love this format Dan. Just makes me even happier that I only use Sawyer.
I have Sawyer Minis put away for friends & family because the way things are going these days. Remarkably affordable.
