I have a 24 GRC and love the manual. Its a ridiculously fun car. I'm glad the automatic exists cause i will have an option if my knee finally gives out.
Into the automatic mainly because I have to share my vehicle sometimes with my spouse who doesn't drive a manual. So I can get the fun of the "manual mode" up down shifting and paddles but also have a daily car that anyone else can drive if needed. I've been used to that with my Mazda 3 for years now. Suits our lifestyle.
Great review, Matt! I really wish they had gussied up some facets of the automatic experience, like adding aluminum paddles for the shifting and some semblance of excitement when shifting shy of a burble tune. It seems like they put more work into the gearbox itself, which is what matters. I'd definitely take the manual all day, and hopefully they produce more of these and cut out the dealer games.
I had no idea they changed the torque split selection. 24MY Circuit Ed. is definitely the sweet spot. I hopped into a core trim at the auto show and saw that it shared door cards with the base trim of the regular corolla. Hard plastic on a $50k CAD Corolla is asking a lot. This is such a cool car though, and I could honestly see myself driving the auto. Maybe I'll convince my mom to get the auto GR lol
New front end is growing on me. Sometimes things look better in person than on a screen. I'm sure aftermarket companies will come up with color matched parts like the wrx so I wouldn't worry about it.
Great review. This is the one vehicle that I may consider trading in my 2013 FRS for. In order to make this potentially happen, I'd have to sell both my FRS, and my Ford Maverick Hybrid to make it work. Either way, I'd love to test drive a GR Corolla with the DAT auto to see how it stacks up to my parent's VW Alltrack with the DSG.
I wanted to cross shop this against a Mazda3 turbo for my wife but the auto was not available yet and my wife refuses to daily a manual. So close... Ha ha
i won't/don't do track wasting stuff but does auto trans still have the overheat thang going on? gravel, runnin' shine/weed on some back roads or what.

@TChan-z8j it's a 1.6L and the motor is pretty overbuilt for 250whp. Can do another 70hp before it needs new cams. Same motor in the yaris is doing 500whp on stock internals and the highest is 897whp. It's a capable motor with head work and a bigger spool.

The instances of warranty denials make me leery of taking a first year automatic, or at all. The cost is too high to have that cloud hanging over my head.
Worse interior in this segment by far, but it's still a competitive car. I'd still probably go Elantra N but nice to see the segment still alive and well.
*Ahhh why do they STILL have a glue'd on tablet on the dash like that. Looks so bad... especially with those big black borders. It's 2024 damn* Otherwise, nice car.

I think one issue with the GR Corolla is that the non-GR one is so overstyled you barely notice these on the road.
I agree
Track car that get your warranty voided if go above 80mph! Interesting take on Toyota.

Can it handle 85mph?

The Core is probably over $45k out the door. Waste of money.
The rear diff was overstressed 🤨
Too bad toyota decided people that want a normal corolla dont get a manual option anymore despite still producing all the same parts for the gr.
That is a sweet car. Look at Toyota cooling Subaru on how to build an STI.
