  • I take Gremlin (Gremi) to the park a couple times to get him started on squirrels. He is 16 weeks up to 24 weeks in this video and gets ready to go to the woods by the end.

    You can use weedeater string for the check cord and it won't get caught up just make sure you tie it to your hitch on your truck and stretch it before using it

    Thank you for making these instructional videos. Can you give me advice on gun training? I've had a problem with gun shy dogs

    • @MountainFeisty
      @MountainFeisty  Рік тому +4

      I wait til they are old enough to get excited about chasing animals. Subsonic 22lr fired when they are 50-100yds away and watch their body language. If they come back to you confident, curious and excited then a couple “good pup”. If they get timid or are startled don’t give any praise and just ignore them. If they are timid I focus on getting them excited about squirrels before anymore gun training. Eventually they learn that gunshots are associated with squirrels and I haven’t ever had any gun shy dogs. It’s very important not to praise a dog when they are scared or timid; you are literally rewarding a behavior that you don’t agree with.

    I want a squirrel dog . I have an acre of land fenced in . Would I be able to keep the dog in the house and in the backyard not kenneled up all day out of season and in season ? How are the mountain curs around kids and other dogs ?

      I have a mountain feist and I live in a camper. He goes almost everywhere with me but he's fine alone at home. They are very active outdoors but warm and cuddly indoors

      He's great with kids and most dogs. He gets territorial occasionally but he's getting better. He's only a year old. Best dog I've ever had though already. I can't imagine having another breed now.

    I’ve really been enjoying your videos
    I’m getting a German short haired pointer puppy tomorrow, do you think I could train her to tree and point at squirrels?
    I plan to have a gps on her and will try to stay close in the woods since she probably won’t bark at her like a typical treeing dog
    Thanks

      @MountainFeisty  Рік тому +1

      Well I started with a gsp/lab mix almost ten years ago that I got from the pound….ten years later I’ve got a bunch of feists. You might be able to train it to tree and have a fun squirrel dog. A lot goes in to a squirrel dog but you’ll never know unless you try. If it doesn’t work out like you expect you can always look into a purpose breed squirrel dog.

      @@MountainFeisty just so happend to pick up phone when you responded
      She’s 13 weeks and I’ve had her for 8 days
      She’s chasing squirrels and following their scent
      She retrieved 2 of them today, she didn’t bring them to me but up to the house
      I think she’s gonna work out for me in some manner hunting
      I’ll watch a bunch of your vids and study up
      Thanks for the response

    Man take a little advice from an experienced squirrel dog trainer. Get that pup out of the park before you ruin him. What you are actually teaching him by what you are doing is to sight chase squirrels. You don't want that, he will bark very little and start leaving the tree when he sees or hears another one elsewhere. Get him in the woods where he can go and learn to hunt and can range further out, he's wanting to go but you are keeping him back. His prey drive is fine and he knows what a squirrel is, there are no short cuts. You would benefit from going with some experienced dog men. There are plenty in Tennessee. If your on squirrel dog central just ask, someone will help you out.

      @@bogleschapel It’s a web site for squirrel dog hunters and a great place to learn from experienced dogmen. You can read it for free or join for like $10 and be able to post pictures and threads. Lots of different opinions and options on there. You can learn from other peoples mistakes instead of making them yourself with your own dog. We all can learn more. It’s also a good place to buy a pup or dog, but like anywhere else you need to do a little research first.
