I've been trapping for 20 years and to whoever reads this, this is a very very low percentage snare setup, the wire is way too rigid, It would take a pretty stupid squirrel to keep pushing his way through that snare, I would not trust I set up like this to feed my family, Not to mention you forgot one of the most important Parts, to pile up bushes at the base of the tree to give the squirrel only 1 option "your branch" to get up, You guys have to watch out for these wanna be UA-cam survival guys that don't really know the details and don't know what they're doing
Yep - well said. Fellow trapper here. I hate when people watch some of these videos and then think they can feed themselves when TSHTF. They are going to starve. A game cam pointed at that pole for a few weeks would open some eyes.
A Canadian northern trapper here also have to agree with both about the B.S. about trapping go to a registered trapper meeting and LEARN FROM THE TRAPPERS THEMSELVES. And also a Trapper can survive as the song says ; A COUNTRY BOY CAN SURVIVE .... Also skin ,cook , hunt , kill , and a good one can track in a blizzard also. So if you want to learn talk to those people . Also Ive taken a pole and tied between 2 trees with 3 snares and caught 3 squirrels .and make high enough to walk under it so you can see them hanging and high enough the any other animals dont get your squirrel .
Great idea to pile up debris at the base of the tree to funnel the squirrels up the branch! Simple solution that I’m sure will help. I have used this method of snaring squirrels many times and had decent luck. So I know for a fact it will work. I am speaking from actual hands on experience and not just parroting what some guy on some other video has said. Obviously it would be better to use a more sensitive snare with a locking mechanism but in a survival situation, you will most likely not have those. You might have a bit of wire in your cache belt or be able to scavenge up some old junk wire at best. I appreciate the somewhat constructive criticism and am always ready to learn from experienced individuals. For the record, I would not want to rely on snared squirrels to provide food for my family either.
Squirrel gravy with rice for the older ones.. and dredged in some flour and fried for the young ones.. especially the young ones that almost tear in half when you're pulling his pants and shirt off.. that's the real tender ones.. But.. dumplings is good.. so is gumbo.. nice to change it up
I'm saving this to watch later. I have 5.5 acres rich with squirrels. The half acre is fenced in and my cat and dog feast on them. But I could snare them on the 5 acres if stuff hits the fan. Wood fire grilled squirrel for as long as needed. Also deer roam the property so I can definitely have a supply of meat.
I've used both wire and fishing line (never had one chew out - their instinct to run is very strong, but I also don't let them work it for hours). You will NOT snag a head every time, so these are best to set around a camp so you can hear a caught one trashing about and go dispatch it (these seldom kill - at least I've never had one kill). Smearing a bait up and down your snare stick (and for heaven's sake, put MULTIPLE snares on each one) works very well and reduces your wait time. You don't need to actually bait the stick, just make it smell like food (peanut butter works great). They do work, but it is a numbers game. The more squirrels around, the better. Also, the more used to people they are, the better. Scattered squirrels in the woods are much, much harder to get than the ones in parks, around camp grounds, etc. That's where you will find the most of them anyways, since the human presence provides food and prevents predation allowing them to grow fat and numerous. If you are in a more urban/suburban areas and can find a concealed place to put a snare stick, you can likely grab a few on the DL while reading a book on a park bench with an ear open.
Hope about if you plant some bait near the base of the wood and when you see it you approach which will cause the squirrel to run up in a rush with more of a chance of getting caught.
Stew every time! Squirrels learn quick, just ask the birds at the empty feeders. 22 LR or 20 Guage works best for me. Check your local laws too, my area...no snares or primitive traps. Still a good survival tool to know, just in case.
Thanks for doing this video, Americans have lost these arts ! especially us city dwellers ! USA KAG Squarrel Gravy and Stew Never had it but if your hungry you will love it (LOL)............
I actually like squirrel. It took me a little while to wrap my head around the idea of eating a squirrel. After I pushed past that I actually enjoyed squirrel stew
in Northern Alberta Canada i use 10-15 foot long poles and put 5 snares on the pole the reason for the long pole is the squirrel hangs high off the ground so you don't have the snare raided and 5 snares per set pole is because several squirrel will use the pole and iv caught 3 on single set
A useful trick to form eyelets in snare wire is to wrap/ tie the wire around a twig in the right diameter you just snap right under the eyelet to get it out. Also, it is very important to alwys work the kinks out of the wire as shown- with as much care as possible. I´ve seen people break wire several times because they thought the wire will straighten itself out if they just give it a hard tug.
I thought that people in USA can simply buy food in shops and they don't live lives of stone age people. Strange We Europeans have such luxury to leave animals in woods live in peace. My heart is with u poor Americanos

Years ago in Florida I made a spring pole trap in the backyard to test out a trigger system I watched on Dave Canterbury’s channel. It’s going to sound cruel but hear goes, after a few misses i finally caught a gray squirrel perfectly another neck, I watched the whole thing, anyway, the squirrel was picked up off the ground with the wire around its neck and he just hung there scratching at it off and on for about ten minutes. It wouldn’t die, just hung there and I went out with welding gloves and let him go. My conclusion was, even though it was caught perfectly he didn’t weigh enough to put enough weight on the loop to strangle himself. Idk if all types of squirrel are built like that but the eastern gray, idk. Thanks
I've caught them with snare sticks like this and had them snagged on necks, shoulders, with one leg through, and even by the back leg. I've not had one kill itself yet. I'm sure it could happen, but if I found one dead I would probably assume it stressed itself to death (which I've had them do in cage traps without a scratch on them if they are in there too long).
@@oaksparoakspar3144 sounds on par with my experience. All the survival books seem to presume it just kills them automatically, guess it pays to practice those things all the way, not just in theory. Thanks
I'm not ever really gonna use this, unless it's a SHTF situation, and at that point, as bad as it sounds, I don't care as long as its there when I check the trap.

Squril dumplings.. Every Thanksgiving. We hunt'em that morning. Ladies clean & cook that evening. Then the fight is on for the heads..
Ruger 10/22’s are made for squirl tacos
But don't forget the good old BB or pellet guns too. Less expensive and ammo is recyclable.
Bro. It's got to be an ar 7!
The 10/22 is good for ALL kinds of squirrels!

Squirrel gravy or squirrel stew?
Squirrel anything if I'm hungry.
Gravy sounds good tho!👍👍
Squirrel gravy with rice for the older ones.. and dredged in some flour and fried for the young ones.. especially the young ones that almost tear in half when you're pulling his pants and shirt off.. that's the real tender ones..
But.. dumplings is good.. so is gumbo.. nice to change it up
This is good in theory but rarely works. Leaned it in the army. Tried it about a dozen times. No luck. At best it will hold him but not kill it

Squirrel stew
Someone else commented already, and I have to agree. Set them close by, so you can hear and dispatch quickly.
Is squirrel stupid oh yeah lol

Fried squirrel and biscuits.
Not squirrel gravy or squirrel stew...... Squirrel and Dumplings. Or boil until tender and then barbecue using KC style BBQ sauce...
Squirrel stew
Squirrel stew with pepper gravy on biscuits.

There is some stupid and there is some smart ones.

Stew
Fried tree rat first, the stew would be second. Then gravy
Squirrel Gravy!!!
That's where I'm carrying my vote/comment.
I grew up eating and it's a special treat, as it's such a different taste.
Squirrel gravy
Gravy
Squirrel stew, the times I've done gravy they were too tough to chew. 🙄

Gravy
Squirrel and gravy
Thanks
Trying this, def ..this hunting season, def squirrel stew
Stew or grilled
Good presentation, prefer squirrel sauce picante
Graby
Squirrel stew.
Fried Squirrel. We home schooled our kids and our youngest would often shoot a Squirrel for lunch, clean it and fry it in Louisiana Fish Fry.

I prefer squirrel ettouffe. But definitely stew over gravy
many years ago I had squirrel stews, late step grandpa bagged a few and grandma cooked them up for us
Squirrel steaw
So far we now have 840 that know how to catch squirrels.
My god do.your squirl weigh 10 pounds. Why such a thick snare
Squirrel gravy
When I was young and things were hard, I ate a lot of squirrel gravy and light bread. Good memories.
HOW CAN I MAKE A SELF LOCKKING SNARE WITH 24 GAUGE SNARE WIRE, NOT SNARE CABLE?
IF ALL I HAVE IS SNARE WIRE, HOW CAN I MAKE A SELF LOCKING SNARE LOOP???
Gravy or squirrel stew
I prefer to use .020 stainless safety wire as snare wire.
Definitely squirrel stew, so you. An cook it slow and it tends to make it more tender not as tough but the gravy sounds good.
Easy to understand. Thanks. Stew.
I've heard that squirrel meat is a little sweet along with porcupine, which is excellent tasting.

here is some info if you need it, & you can delete my comment after you get it
TLDR = if you find a baby squirrel warm it up, so you can return it
to its mom & or safely rehydrate it, so you can safely give it formula
baby squirrels can't stay warm, drink, eat, or eliminate without help till 90 days old
mom will not reject a baby for your scent BUT MOM WILL REJECT A COLD BABY,
so
bring it inside to warm it up to human body temperature & Reunite it with mom if you can, ,
look up "Reuniting tree squirrel babies with their mom" mary cc squirrels reunite
if this fails seek out a wildlife rehabilitator for help & if all of that also fails use
its weight in grams divided by 20 to set how many cc's to feed it every 2 hours &
to prevent aspiration pneumonia feed it via 1 - 3 CC oral syringe feeder lying tummy down please , look up
2018/09/11 example video , "Thirsty baby squirrel!" Jasmin121176 , & rehydrate it for a day using Pedialyte ,
they NEED mom or formula to supply adequate nutrition till they reject it at 10 weeks old
a FAST growing baby squirrel needs wildlife grade formulas used in a zoo like "fox valley day one "
or DIY 24 hour perishable 3 parts goats milk, 1 part yogurt 1 part heavy whipping cream
or a very few puppy formulas will work , (Goat's Milk Esbilac? ) but NOT just "Esbilac "
a squirrels weight in grams is 20 times the safe stomach capacity in ml & cc's per feeding so
find its weight in grams divide it by 20 , & thats the number of ML/CC's to feed each meal this
"5 percent rule" stomach capacity to weight ratio quantity as each meal only works if you use a metric gram scale
at 6 weeks of age let it practice gnawing solids like; fruits, monkey chow, & dry Puppy science diet.
at 8 week of age test if a baby squirrel can drink water from a shallow container AND crack a nut
look up 1X1X2 foot nesting box & 4X4X7 foot pre-release cage so you can slowly free it,
because after 6 months of age squirrels become unpleasantly wild
There is some good information on the Internet, but other sites
give advice that will kill the animals & some do this on purpose
Cow’s milk, goat’s milk, human baby formulas, & "most" other pet products lack nutritional value,
are less digestible & boiling or scalding them wont fix it over the long term of 2 months
these eventually WILL cause failure to thrive, MDB , & death due to malnutrition
squirrels don't get & or survive rabies long enough to give it & head trauma mimics rabies
baby squirrels can be fearless & very sociable, so, its only an orphan if it pursues or climbs you,
or a pet BUT stop ANY pets from touching it since digestive & oral bacteria can kill it

squirrel gravy can be turned to stew :P
I want to know how to make squirrel gravy and stew
Is there anything other than wire? What if that's not available?
Which TruSpec pants are Those?
Thanks
I'll ask the question, are squirrels the tastiest prize in the woods?? Or would rabbit make a better stew?? And HOW MANY SQUIRRELS DOSES IT'S TAKING TO MAKES A STEW???
3-4 squirrels to make a stew that 1 rabbit would make. The flavors are fairly similar.
Stew or fried with jalapenos.
Actually, deboned squirrel and noodles instead of chicken and noodles in the crockpot.
Cool
Looked at 24 gage wire to make snares. Wire seems too stiff.
Also good for those tree rats digging into your eves. 😂
Squirrel stew. I'd try it. Thank you for the info! Can you do one for rabbits?
How much meat can you get out of a squirrel?
Usually the front and back quarters
The back or tenderloins is the best part I eat all of the squirrel from the head to the hind quarters and some of the internal organs heart lungs liver kidneys, on the head you have the tongue and cheek meat and brains if you choose to eat them I’m from the south and grew up eating them if you boil them they make a great broth and pick out the bones it makes a fine pot of squirrel dumplings you can basically do anything with it you do with chicken
All of it
Both different days.
What if you use guitar string
I got a squirrel in 12 hours
+1
