- In this week's video, I share some squirrel hunting tips on how to use a squirrel call, the type of squirrel calls available, and the best way to call in squirrels when squirrel hunting.
Depending on the season, squirrel calling success can vary, but having various squirrel calls in your hunting bag will help. There is no wrong way to use a squirrel call. I encourage you to try a variety of styles to see which works best for you.
When hunting squirrels in the late season, I have the best luck with a squirrel distress call being that squirrels are less vocal during winter squirrel hunting. However, that's not to say the reed style call will not work during late-season squirrel hunting. Your best luck with this call is when you locate a squirrel, and they are out of range. Try using the squirrel call to make a squirrel bark and see if it pulls him in.

Thanks for this. I have a unique reason for looking for this. My idiot neighbor has a flood light pointed directly into my bedroom window robbing me of my sleep. The war has been years in the making. So, my next move is to keep waking his dog all night long so he (the owner) gets no sleep either. Hoping the squirrel call will make the dog want to go investigate. At minimum, cause him to bark. That last call upset my dog, so that may be the one.
Update me on this situation. I'm rooting for you.
@@danorris5235 I ended up using my car alarm. Parked my car in my driveway close to his house. Put my keyfob on my nightstand and clicked the alarm every 15 minutes until he shut off his floodlights.

Put a mirror in the window
@@justanother2day I have 3 foot plexiglass mirrors mounted to my privacy trellises and also lined my windows with reflective mirrors. He put a hand-witten note facing my house "f'k trump", so I immediately bought a giant house flag of trump holding an American flag like a curtain. It's hanging from a horizontal flag mount on my tree facing his house/flood light. I have sufficiently blocked most of the light without feeling closed in with curtains.

I agree, it does work but I wasn’t a fan of the sounds. However it did make a decent chatter sound.

I never leave without my JPO call. I have called in a lot of squirrels.
I ordered the JPO a year ago and like it. The only problem I've had with it is when doing the chatter call is the rubber part flies off.
Add gorilla glue to it and it won't happen anymore.

Jpo for sure I actually have a pet squirrel we rescued.. now tryin to find it. Jpo is very close to what they sound like.i know this about hunting and I used to hunt squirrel to keep my garden safe.. but jpo sounds very realistic for one or two of the sounds they make

Here we go I pull this off to try to see how to use the squirrel call. And he's trying to sell hit the call. He likes the best and he's saying the primo was no good. That's not what I wanted to know. I wanted to know how to operate a squirrel call
I'm pretty sure I went over how I use the call. There is no right or wrong way to use one. You just have to test it out and see what works.
After watching this I went and got out my FOXPRO griz’n’grey and tried it and it sounds exactly the same.
I have never heard of that call. I'll have to check it out
I bought it as a coon squall and attention call for tough greys. Works the same as the calls you mentioned. Good stuff.

All the calls JPO makes are custom. They are all are handmade but you can pick on the color options for the bellows and barrel. My personal call was engraved with my logo.

That distress would actually make a good rabbit whistle , I use a whistle like that for squeaking rabbits outta of the dens
That’s an awesome idea. I have never thought of that but I have never been super successful at hunting rabbits.

@@MichiganAmBushOutdoors they are called fox whistles I to believe its supposed to sound like a sweaking rabbit , guys in Europe use them alot there is alot of good videos on UA-cam about them !!

I’ll be ready for a coyote. We actually called one in over the weekend on a squirrel hunt.
Any way to simulate the long screech after the barking? Here in Mississippi, the barking is almost always followed by a long screech.
I typically do the bark and then push the bellow down, and that's how I get a screeching sound. Not sure if it's the sound you are looking for, but it does well for me.
@@MichiganAmBushOutdoors that’s what I was thinking. If you compress the bellow all the way and then release, does it screech that way? Like trying to suck in too much air at once. I’ve always just made calls by mouth (probably doesn’t help), but thinking on getting a call.
If you push the bellow down and let off it will make the squall of a grey squrrel

the new one I just got in the mail doesn't have double reed, it sounds more like the primo one...
Since making this video, JPO switched the design to a single reed but mine definitely sounds very similar to the original double reed.
Do these calls work ?
That one more resembles the sound when they bark at a predator which is really close. The sound they make towards the predator when looking at the predator. The sounds they make when talking amongst themselves are different.
There is a whining sound, i haven't figured out what it is yet. Maybe mating? maybe its when another squirrel steals their nuts. Sounds like if a girl was saying "hey don't tickle me! I'm fkin serious ! " But they say it in one dropping syllable. It's really high pitch. . . Then typically one runs away or is chased. Trouble is I don't know if that would call a squirrel caz it sounds like the squirrel is annoyed. probly just doin it ...
I have called in plenty of squirrels with the JPO calls.
I dont have any issues calling squirrels in with Primos . I would use the 60.00 to go on buying another 28ga for squirrel hunting.
I'm not saying the primos doesn't work. I'm saying the sound/call quality is not the same as the custom call.
@@MichiganAmBushOutdoors not going to be. But once in a while u get one call sounds better than others in the same model. I bought 2 primos calls. One sounds little different than the other call. I have 2 custom squirrel calls. I have called and killed more squirrels with the hadyel squirrel whistle than any other. I squirrel almost every day i am off.
I would have never thought a 3 dollar squirrel whistle would work.

@@MichiganAmBushOutdoors i wish i could find them for that. I think i paid 12.00 . But i live in a small town. Last yr i hunted with a mossberg 500 410 TSS turkey gun. I turned into a squirrel gun. I killed 100+ squirrels with it. Only way i can afford to shoot a 410. Is that i reload. Only 410 i have seen is Winchester AA 2.5 8 shot. I seen some fiocchi 3 inch 7.5 45.00 a box. I reload for 410, 28, 20, and 12 ga. Could u put out a video of the custom call in a hunt? I also collet squirrel calls. The custom call would be one to add to my collection. What gun do u like too for squirrel hunting?
I primarily only use that custom call when squirrel hunting and there is a lot of videos on the channel. More squirrel hunting videos will start dropping in January after deer season.
As for my gun for choice, I prefer my Ruger 10/22. I recently picked up a scope cam which makes capturing the hunt a lot easier. Also, it’s a lot of fun to watch.

😲 well I live in Michigan come on over to my house and you’ll find yourself a load of squirrels. They’re all over in my backyard. They were trying to chew into the roof of my garage. They’ve gotta go. I think I put out a little bit of food and I can have 20 squirrels a day, all Roman around at the same time
And if anybody’s into raccoons, I don’t know what they’re good for but yeah, I have a few of those that need to go a few possum couple stray, cats and ground! OK, the cats and the groundhog can stay, but everything else has to go
I'm gonna buy that jpo call and then also that distress whistle off Amazon and hopefully I can slay some tree rats this spring

I just received my JPO call. To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. My call came held together with a black zip tie where the bellow and wood meet. If you take the up tie off the bellow comes off. Not what you expect when you spend $65 on a custom squirrel call. Tried emailing and calling JPO. No response to either.
I will reach out to JPO and let you know what I find out.

why all the hunting tech for squirrels? I have 14 acres in North Florida ! I can sit on my front porch with a sling shot and get dinner in about an hour ! the only time they can be good to eat is during winter so they got all year to populate and they sure do reproduce like crazy

they don't hibernate here I don't think !! we just don't get as cold as Michigan! 30s 40s is about it ! every now and then we get in the 20s they get fat on all the acorns and I feed them dry corn and bird seed by late December they are huge !!!
I shot one squirrel in Michigan and I Swear it was the size of a small house cat. If there was ever such a thing as a trophy squirrel, that was the one.

@@MichiganAmBushOutdoors ye I remember there was alot of squirrel and rabbit up north I was in the USAF for twenty years and managed to get stationed in N Dakota for a few years it was loaded with small game and the squirrels and rabbit were very healthy sized I bet they do alot of slingshot hunting there
