    Harvey, I wish I watched this before I started, I’m only at the disassemble part. Before I took the top cover off I was told to line the timing up, my garage lighting is horrible and I kept missing the T but only saw the F. I lined everything up with the F and made some marks with a paint marker and began unscrewing the top, just wanted to make sure I didn’t screw up. The engine is a 200cc zs169fml

      Hey Joe!!! I was looking for a way to memorize timing on these engines, cam lobs down and timing marks up makes it easy to remember... Screwing up timing typically means smashed valves with possible head and piston damage, one has to do it right and double check a few times.... Glad it help, thanks for the kind words, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!!

    on those timing caps I just use a washer that fits in nice and tight after the slot has a rounded bottom and then I use a pair of vice grips or a Cresent wrench.....I did make one that I welded the proper size washer into a cheapo socket I cut slot in to fit the washer so I could use it with an hammer operated impact driver.....never had one I could remove with this washer method....try it sometime you will be pleased

    So the cam gear can be set to either setting? Either the T witch will loose a little power? Or the F witch is firing just before top dead. It seemed like you left it on the T.? Is it a personal preference or is there a specific one. Ooor is it set the cam at TDC and the cdi on the f? I'm a little bit confused my motor acts like it's not getting enough fuel at times. I advanced the cdi and it seemed to smooth out but it still kinda skips when I give it gas. I know it's not a carburetor issue because if I choke it it wants to quit

    Thanks Harvey for the video. It helped me to go step forward in rebuilding my HONDA XL 185S 1982. I replaced the lower timing sprocket and had to re-align the marks. I ended up having the upper "O" mark aligned with the magneto just between T and F marks. is that a problem? My next thing will be to align the pulse [alternator] mechanism. Shall I do some tricks there?
    Thanks!

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 років тому

      Hey SandyGeorgia!!!! The upper "O" should be lined up with the lower T to start, then the fly wheel should be backup up a little such that the F mark is lined up and the pulse generator should be lined up with the magnetic piece on the cam. Ur valves should be closed for both adjustments... I hope this helps.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

    • @sandygeorgia
      @sandygeorgia 7 років тому

      Thanks Harvey, it certainly helps. My point was that after I replaced the lower inner sprocket [tight fit on the crank shaft ] the best alignment with the upper O I can get is between T and F. not precisely T. If I make minus one chain link, then it doesn't reach T mark. If I do plus one link, then it gets passed by F.

I have everything times dead nuts on as far as timing, but I am getting a little blown back into the carb. Is that normal for these older engines? Intake valve and rocker clearance look good. Valve appears to be seated good.

    Thanks for making these videos, they have helped me greatly! I have one question, when i tighten the two 8mm bolts on my pulse generator base, the motor seems VERY hard to turn over my hand at the flywheel. If i crack one of them loose a little, then it turns over fine. I have the O-ring installed on the back of the rotor base. The oil seal in the middle of the rotor base looks fine. Am I missing something? I know their is a gasket that goes behind the rotor base, would that fix the problem you think? I didnt see that gasket being used in my service manual unless i missed it. I have an 1984 atc Big Red 200. Thanks!

      Hey Rick, Have U noticed that there is a pin on the cam that the advancer assembly needs to settle into? If that pin is not settled into the advancer assembly, it will stick out around a couple of mm which would cause Ur issue and mess up Ur timing.... I would look there first... Did someone have Ur cam out for some reason or was just the advancer assembly removed for some reason? I hope this helps... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

    • @ricklonetti9587
      @ricklonetti9587 5 років тому

      @@HarveySpooner thanks for getting back to me so quickly Harvey! Yes I did see the pin, it actually even gets stiff despite securing the pulse generator base with nothing else attached. I did order a new gasket for behind the back of the generator base and the new rubber seal that goes in the center of it. That rubber seal is very hard. I will let you know when I get them installed later this week. 👍

    how's it going harvey I picked up a 85 250sx about a month ago and noticed it was smoking when I looked behind me the smoke was blue.. I ran a compression test and it was about 120psi so I figured I'd buy a set of piston rings. last night I pulled the head and changed the rings. after putting everything back together I have absolutely no compression and the motor seems to be sucking in thru the exhaust instead of making compression. your feedback would be Greatly Appreciated! thank you

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  6 років тому +1

      Hey Tyler!!! Sounds to me like the valve timing is off and hopefully the piston and valves did not touch!!! I would also check the valves, maybe they are set too tight and are not closing all the way, particularly the exhaust valve, U can do something known as a cylinder leak up test to hear where the compression is going.... Good luck, let me know how it turns out.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

    The service manual on the 82 Honda 185s ATC , said to ad fresh oil in the oil pocket under cam till cam lobes submerged. Can you confirm this Harvey? Had engine running then added the oil and now would not start.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  6 років тому

      Hey Travis!!! I have not seen that instruction in the service manual on a Honda ATC, but, I know that air cooled diesels have a cap on top to remove and fill with oil to pre lube the cam shift. I normally throw a few squirts of oil up there if it is a dry engine from a rebuild or from sitting.... About Ur issue, are U sure that Ur valve timing is good, that Ur valve lash is not too tight, and that U don't have a blown head gasket.... U have to go thru the basics, spark test, compression test, if U find nothing, a cylinder pressure test, make sure Ur timings are good, that the spark plug was not damaged... etc.... Let me know how U make out.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!!

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  9 років тому

      Erik Creamer , Typically, it stays there, though, with the slightest bump, it does go back to the T, normally, one can hold it to the F position while aligning the CDI pulser plate to the magnet up on the cam. Thanks for your thoughts, it seems that U did this timing before.... Thanks also for watching and commenting!

      i have a question i recently just replaced my rings on the piston but for some reason the motor still doesnt have much compression, do you have any idea?

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  9 років тому

      Erik, a couple of things, first, do a compression test with the carb wide opened, (no restriction from the carb, ie- throttle or choke), take the reading, write it down. (if it is over 125PSI, U are probably good),. Put some oil down the spark plug hole, rotate the engine around a few times to coat the cylinder walls, and do another test, if it improves dramatically, (25psi or so), hope that running the engine for awhile breaks things in, if not, did U rotate the ring gaps such that 1 ring is at 4oclock, one at 8 oclock, and 1 at 12noon, did U gap the rings? Also make sure that the valve lash is not too tight, (the valves fully close), U double checked the valve timing? Head not cracked, gasket is good? Let me know how U make out, Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  6 років тому +1

      Hey John, It has a weak spark, an intermittent spark, or an occasional spark???? I always start by changing the spark plug, U may think this is trivial, trust me, start by changing the plug.... Then, I would cut the black wire with the white strip such that is can be reconnected easily.... That disables the engine turn off circuit, let me know how it all turns out.... Hi Harvey ,, ?? I have a 1974 Xl350 , been searching on swaping it over to 12V. Along the way I found that it is possible to swap the Cdi system fron the ATC185 into the Xl350 , have you ever done this or know whats needed to do this ? thanks

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 років тому

      Hey Bill, My expectation would be that a 1974 XL350 would have points, the ATC185 uses an electronic pulse generator to trigger the spark, (The Honda XL350 is a motocross motorcycle manufactured and sold between 1974 and 1986. The motorcycle had a 350 cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine.) But, having said that, I'm sure that the later models used a pulse generator and perhaps that can be put on your 1974 model... I hope this helps, please let me know if U need more.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

      Hi again , I do have points in it running a 6V system , I`m modding this motor with a big bore piston , adding a WebCam camshaft , compression up from 8.3 to 10.25 , the only thing left was to swap over to the Cdi system , long ago a racing fella put this Atc 185 Cdi system on these motors , he had to mount the pulse generator somewhere down on the cranshaft as it can`t be put up in the original cylinder head , I have the pulse generator in my stator , but can`t find how much voltage it produces and if it would trigger the spark on a Cdi system ,, I have a spare 83 Atc185 in my shed and have all the needed parts , just no info on what exactly the guy did to make it work , thanks I`ll keep searching , I like the old Honda`s myself , I`m putting the 350 in a mini rail buggy go kart , cheers ..

    hello, Harvey. I recently got a Honda XL 185. and when installing the camshaft there seems to be some play that makes the timing chain rub against the inside of the cylinder and the inside cover of the CDI. everything I try to avoid play seems useless. double gasket, washers inside.... any ideas please.. thanks a lot.

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 років тому

      Hey Jay Z., I think the top end of the XL185 is about the same, maybe interchangeable with the ATC185/200 head... Given that, the way the cam sits in the head, (more or less falls into place once everything is aligned), I can't picture Ur problem unless U bought it in pieces and someone swap out a few for the wrong ones... There should be no movement right to left, side to side,... I think U got me on this one, let me know how it turns out so I can learn something.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting, sorry I could not be much help....

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  8 років тому

      +Austin Hatmaker , To check timing on a Honda ATC185/200 motor, at the minimum, the recoil and the pulse generator cover have to be removed, only 2 phillips head scews and 5 10mm bolts, only takes a couple of minutes, one can also tell if the chain is loose...
