Changing Fuel Filter 99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee

- This is also how to install a fuel pressure regulator. Which is located inside the fuel filter. You will need a 10mm socket to remove the filter from the chassis.
If your model engine does not have a Schrader valve on the fuel rail remove the fuel pump relay (found in the fuse/relay box next to the battery) and start the engine. The engine will stall within a few seconds. This will help reduce the fuel pressure in the fuel system. You will still get some fuel spray when disconnecting the fuel filter. USE CAUTION.

The details in this video are amazing enough that I was numbering and writing down all the steps. Been working on vehicles for years and you still made a pretty simple task become even easier. I've watched hundreds of vehicle repair how to videos and this video was the first video over 5 minutes that i didnt skip back and forth at all. You are truly a mechanics life saver.
Thank you, I really appreciate that, glad you liked it!
In my 2000 Jeep Grand, 4.7 engine, the filter also has a pressure regulator in it and most mechanics don't know this. I paid a guy to install a new fuel pump which required the gas tank to be removed and re-installed and was back the next day with only 24 lbs of pressure to the engine. I didn't need a new pump, I had replaced the filter a week earlier and the problem was the pressure regulator. I spent more money than I needed to, having a new pump installed when all I needed was a new filter/regulator as the one I bought at Aito Zone was faulty from day one. I have stopped buying sensors and this item from after market places. They cost more at the dealer but they last longer and work better. Just thought I would share this with you in the hope of saving you a headake. 4 years ago was when I had a new pump installed and then the pressure regulator the next day as the pump was not the problem and now I am having to replace the aftermarket pressure regulator again as the one my mechanic installed an aftermarket one and it failed 4 years later. As you can see from this video, it's not in an easy place to get to and a pain to do. Hope this helps you save money, time and a headake.
Greg, my jeep which is also a 4.7 V8, will start but as soon as I ease off the pedal the engine cuts off, is this also a regulator problem? Rick..
This Filter has the Pressure regulator inside of it. I replaced my filter and about a month later I was having problems with the car as it would stop running. A mechanic said I needed a new fuel pump. He replaced it for me as I didn't want to do it myself. Has the same problem, the car would stall out and not restart. Turned out to be the pressure regulator inside this filter. I DIDN'T NEED A NEW FUEL PUMP THAT SITS INSIDE THE GAS TANK...Check the gas pressure before you pay for a part you don't need. Hope this helps save you some money and headaches. I'm glad he pointed this out. Most people don't know this. I didn't and I have owned Jeeps for 50 years.
so your NEW filter had a bad FPR inside it?
What sucks is you will never know if the mechanic was Fing you or didn't know what the issue was.
I agree with David K., this is an excellent video. All details are shown plus more. Saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you for taking the time to make and share it with others.
Robert, David and everyone else, Thanks for the kind words.
I am that person with 0 experience - changed my first fuel filter ever (it was on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I will drive 'til the rust finally wins). The detailed help with the 'clips' more'n likely saved me breaking something or cussin' something (well, more than I did).
I'm glad you found it helpful.
Hey, just wanted to thank you for the video. My 2003 grand Cherokee, 6 inline engine, was going thru long cranking periods, I had to constantly hit the gas pedal to start it up. Did some research and many ppl stated it could be the Fuel Filter / Regulator, so I decided to replace it. I followed your video instructions and the car starts up with no problem. I greatly appreciate everyone that takes their time to upload these great videos. by the way, I ordered the Mopar brand, because I read a lot about the AutoZone brands just having too many issues. Yes, it's $89. as opposed to $45, but it offers me peace of mind that I will not have to be doing it anytime soon, God willing.
Finally! Somebody who knows how to navigate the video and fully explains detailed processes. Thank you sir.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
You just destroyed the Haynes Manuels. Friggen Great Video, Camera Work. The thumbs down are unhappy people in life.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Wish I had seen your video 3 days ago, took me a while to change my fuel filter, that 1 connection didn't wanna let go, eventually I got it done, I will be watching your videos from now on for any installs and modifications, keep up the great work my man!
Thanks for the great video. Your explanations and extra detail made the job a lot easier. I'd like to recommend that when trying to remove the difficult connector with the slide-in collar that the collar be cleaned with brake cleaner, sprayed with silicon lubricant, and then use a pair of Harbor Freight long reach hose grip pliers to press the collar in. The nose of the pliers is placed behind the sliding collar and form a circle around the pipe. As pressure is applied the pliers push the collar in evenly from all directions. I was then able to pull the connector off easily this way. Hope this works for others.
The man, the myth, the Martin. I watched this multiple times before I even started and the replacement went pretty smooth. Thanks Brotha
Great Video, Its good that you also show the entire job, not just Filter off ,,Filter on, also actually showing how the Pipe retainers work, well done.
Thank you
One of the best, most comprehensive and useful instructional videos I have seen. Thanks!
Honestly man really dig the depth of your videos. I have a 2001 WJ I am trying to milk as long as I can and your videos have helped out.
Great video on how to replace the fuel filter. One of the best how to video's I have seen. Will be replacing my filter this week on my 03 Grand Cherokee. Thanks
Thank you I really appreciate that I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Good luck with your fuel filter change out.
This video is very cool my mechanic had a slight problem in removing the filter, he didn’t want to damage anything, he looked at your video and done. It took him like 8 minutes in and out.😱🤯❤️👌
Rafa Hechavarria that's awesome glad to hear that!
Great video. The WJ manual says that these shouldn't be serviced regularly. But looking at that nasty filter and fuel on the paper plate, I can see why you would want to do it. Thanks for the step by step illustration!
You are worth your weight in gold 🥇. Very clear and thorough. Easy to listen to. Thanks a bunch for uploading this video, much appreciated 👍
Thanks for the excellent video! I had my 04 grand cherokee towed to the dealer a couple days ago to have the starter replaced and a pinion seal replaced in the rear differential. While it was there I asked the service advisor to replace the inline fuel filter in front of the gas tank. She said it only had a filter in the tank! I told her I saw something there that looked like a fuel filter and would like it replaced. She said she would have it looked at but sure there was no filter there. I said, Okay check it out for me and let me know what you find out. She came back to me after the mechanic checked it out and sure enough it was a fuel filter. They wanted $200+ to replace it!!! $620.00 for an after market starter and to put the pinion seal in! I bought the pinion seal from them about a year ago $45.00 so that was not part of the $620.00. Dealer work is expensive but they do have a lot of overhead to cover.
This is the first Video of yours I’ve seen. This is the most clear cut informative video I’ve seen anyone sharing mechanical fixes on vehicles ever. . Thank you. I’m about to change this thing out. So helpful. Not one detail left out! I hope you have a video of more common WJ problems.
Awesome video, your level of detail in this video is amazing, you’ve described this so well that someone with no experience could do this with no problems, thanks for sharing!
I am that person with 0 experience - changed my first fuel filter ever (it was on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I will drive 'til the rust finally wins). The detailed help with the 'clips' more'n likely saved me breaking something or cussin' something (well, more than I did).
Great video, Sir, thank-you! I subscribed. It wasn't "just" the thoroughly supplied, knowledgeable and necessary information provided but the clear, concise presentation manner and video quality, too. Your video was enjoyed and VERY much appreciated! Again, thank-you, Sir, well-done and all the best to you and yours.
Many years ago I bought a used 2001 Grand Cherokee that always started hard the first start of the day. I determined it was a bad checkvalve allowing fuel pressure to bleed off after standing for several hours. I thought it was on the fuel pump and finally sold the GC. NOW I find out a new fuel filter would have fixed it. :)
Now you need to find yourself another JGC.
Thank you for watching. 😎👍
Good video, very thorough. I wish I had it on a lift because it is very awkward reaching up there. I also had a difficult time removing that last line as you did, but this video definitely helped me prepare for everything I would need to tackle it. Wear safety glasses for sure. Thank you.
I can definitely say that you are my online Mechanic Teacher, I appreciate you, keep keeping those good TRANSPARENT skill teaching.
And also noticed that you teach in the most Eco-Friendly way, I love it!!
You are very welcome, I appreciate that.
..and I thought it was just a filter. Thank you for cutting it open and showing us the inside! Subscribed!
Old video still helping me a lot
it's like me, old but not ready to be put down yet. Glad I could help!
So happy you cut the filter open.. just explains why our jeep won't start but we still hear the pump
are you hearing the pump or is it the fuel pressure regulator in the filter. They are known to be noisy. If it is the FPR change the filter.
great detail. my 2003 just dies without warning. 70mph died, pulled over and restart. had to use starting fluid one time to get it to start, ran fine then again a couple days later died again at a stop light, was able to get it to start by pumping the gas peddle. going to replace fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter and fuel pump. 220,000 miles on it.
thanks for posting.
Martin, thank you for taking the time to post this detailed video. It's really nice to know what exactly you're dealing with before trying to tackle a job like this. Knowing how the fittings worked was the most valuable part of this video. Thank you for taking the extra time to go in to detail at your bench to show how they worked and the best way to take them apart. Have a safe and enjoyable day.
Dominic Pinciotti you're welcome, always happy to help.
Hi, first seeing this channel n I have to say, you are the best n easiest to understand Mechanic I have ever seen. Thank you so much for being so perfect.
Awesome presentation, thanks for the demonstration, you was very precise pointing out the procedure on how to change a fuel filter. My Jeep is a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited and I had it for 13 years and have never attempted to change the filter which I purchased like 3 years ago. I’m afraid I may break something in the process which may cost me more, do appreciate your video, thanks
Glad it was helpful and thank you for watching
amazing detail - nice low key delivery
Far and away the most thorough and well defined, no-nonsense videos ever. So many others talk about this that and the other... with my ADD, I lose attention and Ive lost interest. OR you have to skip into 5 minutes of the video to get to the good stuff. Not with Martin, you are into the meat of the video in no time at all! And you cover every aspect of the subject thoroughly! Excellent videos Martin!
Thank you, Robert! I appreciate that.
Thanks for having this video on youtube. Am about to go out and change the filter....great video..
My tough one needs replaced, watching this I realize I can cut the line and go to the vice with it!!! Thank for your time sir
I personally wouldn't cut the line being that it is under 60 psi.
Could make it hard to seal backup with fuel line in clamps.
Thank you for watching.
Tremendous job with this how-to video. Extremely helpful. Thanks a million.
Thanks. Before watching your video I didn't even know where the filter was or what it looked like. I ordered a new filter online and got it he next day. Had it replaced in about 30 minutes. Disconnecting the fuel lines was really aggravating but I was ready for that. At least I knew what I had to do and just kept working at it. And the best part is the fuel filter was the problem. Smooth acceleration now.
Glad to hear it all worked out.
Best video man. Thank you so much. I had the same connections on my 99 WJ. Got gas all over me but got the job done.
Glad you found it helpful and got-r-done. At today's gas prices you probably only spilled $5 worth. 😬
Excellent tips. Mine was exactly what he did. Very precise details and emphasis on connectors. Well done!
Clicked on the video to see that sick WJ, stayed for the excellent video. Subscribed to see the rest of the Jeep.
Thank you....I got some pretty cool stuff planned for the 4.7 and the rest of the Jeep
That is the best video I seen yet. Thanks so much. Now the work begins
Thank you Wayne, I appreciate that. I'm glad you like it and found it helpful.
Thanks for one of the "best videos" on a channel..clear, concise, & explained in detail! Kudos! to you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, I really appreciate that, glad it worked out for you.🙂
Excellent. Well detailed and explained.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks a lot, for showing us the filter inside!!
You're very welcome I'm glad you liked it thank you for watching.
Very thorough explanation, thank you!
You are very welcome!
Your definitely an excellent teacher
My G
Nice work explaining all the components and what to expect. I ended up removing the RR wheel even thought it was on jack stands under the rear axle. Instead of lying on my back, I was able to sit on a bucket and wrestle with the fittings. Note: great advice to remove the FPR bracket bolts--allowed easier handling and compression of the fittings. Compressed air always your friend to remove the grit that can inhibit the plastic clip movement. Thanks for posting!
Edit: LR not RR wheel D'oh!
great video. love the detail and explanation
Great video. Very thorough.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m getting ready to do this on my sons 04 Grand Cherokee, a vehicle that still has an external fuel filter, what a concept LOL, thanks Martin 👍😁
Good luck with that, also spray some WD40 or lubricant up in their it will help remove those clips from the fuel filter
@@martinbuilt I did and it went good, thanks buddy 👍😁
@@davestewart9146 that's good to hear. 😀
Great video! Everything was explained thoroughly.
Very well done. To the point and very descriptive. Made my DIY a breeze
Good looking out man ! I just saved myself a couple bucks. Keep these videos coming bro...
Great vid dude! I appreciate your efforts in practical solutions to these repairs. Love your WJ, your good work shows well! Im new to the WJs, but already have 4!!! LOL! Guys like you are very helpful in learning how to maintain a new platform to Me
Well made video. I got all the info I needed and nothing I didn't. Thank you.
You just got a new subscriber.
Such a great video. I changed mine this morning. Weirdly, the toughest connection was my easiest.
It's always nice when a plan goes even better than expected. 😁
Wow thanks for the video very helpful and cost saving just did my 2004 jeep i had to saw the tip off one end of the filter and use a pick to break the clip off other than that is was pretty easy
Glad to hear it worked out for you.
Just changed my filter. Thanks for the video!
thank you for the great instructional video! kept getting system rich bank 1 and 2 ECU codes on my 01 GC limited, my fuel pressure was bouncing between 58 and 65 psi, replace the filter / regulator, now fuel pressure is steady 52, no more 0172, 0175 codes!!
well the 0172 and 0175 codes are back, Fuel Press still at 52, replaced the Cats, O2 sens, MAP, Fuel filter/regulator....only things left are fuel pump and injectors... any thoughts???
Hey Martin. ,,. I had sent you a message a while back about my son in-law having issues with the blower motor staying on and the climate control not working correctly in his 2002 Grand Cherokee , and you had said at that time you didn't have any experience with one of those.
Well I'm not sure if you have the auto climate control system in your WJ , but I I figured just in case you do you may be interested,.
That the issue was the resistor module under the passenger side of the dashboard, it controls the blower motor speed,. It actually does it by sending pulses to the module from the climate control panel.
My son in-law had tried a couple of cheaper after market resistor modules and they only lasted for a couple of months before going bad and having the same issues.
I installed a original style one from
Crown Jeep parts,. And I also installed a toggle switch to turn off the power supply going to the module so he can stop the power supply when the vehicle is not in use,
Because I discovered that the power supply which comes from the fuse box under the hood that operates the resistor module is constantly powering up the module even when the ignition switch is turned off,
And I believe that is the reason why many people with the automatic climate control system has issues.
I know I could have rewired the circuit in the fuse box to a switched circuit off the keyed ignition switch.
But he mainly just drives the jeep to and from work, , and I mounted the toggle switch right on the center console for easy reach., And it was very easy to install with only a couple feet of wire between the switch and the power supply at the module under the dashboard.
If you do happen to need a blower model in the future, the one from Crow seems to be the best one, it runs the fan much better than any of the other ones that we have used.
Hope this can help you out some time, or maybe you can use this information to help a friend.
Tim from Wisconsin.
THANKS so much. Just bought a 2001 grand Cherokee. 4.0. 130k. Love it so far but know little about it.
Welcome to the channel and thank you for watching
Finally found what I needed to know. great detailed Info. especially the part cutting the fuel filter open. more good info. Thank you
Martin, danke. Alles Gute.
Thank you for making this video - awesome camera work, no nonsense, extra info about those dastardly plastic clips no one wants to learn the hard way. I need to replace a leak in the "difficult one" hose, and it is great to know to pull the thing down and that I would need a special ring to get it apart. I will replace the filter anyway so will not bother, but will make note of which type I put back in there!
Glad you found it helpful.
Good video , very helpful
Glad to hear that
Thanks for this! took me 30 minutes with your help. For me, putting back on the one line by itself required some clip adjustment, by pulling the tabs out slightly so it wouldn't leak. Maybe that helps someone else...
Awesome video. Thank you 🙏👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you liked it!
Excellent, just Excellent thank you very much, all details are priceless.
Direct to each point and more.
Regrards
Thank you, I really appreciate that. 😎👍
Great job. Thanks for the video. Subscribed and looking forward to changing my filter.
Awesome, thank you!
Great vid. I'm no mechanic, but started doing little things like this on my 05 JGC to save some $$.
This is extremely detailed, and I really appreciate it. I have a 2000 JGC with the 4.7. I bought it with a misfire, and I’ve replaced the plugs, coils, crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor, injectors, and the connectors on the injectors. I’m still getting a misfire on cylinders 4/8. My only guess is that maybe the filter is clogged and there’s not enough fuel coming into the rail. I’m replacing the filter today.
Did that fix it??
@@jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285Nope. I sold it because it was either a computer or wiring issue, and I don't have the patience to deal with that. It had a ton of other issues anyway. Missing driveshaft, shot suspension, AC didn't work, etc.
Wow great video brother! Love that detail in everything!
I replaced my fuel filter on my 01 G/C and the loud annoying severe whistle appeared. Drove the vehicle for a while checked my connections all normal except for the whistle. I replaced the new filter with a Mopar filter and that cured it. After some research i was amazed how common this was. If i could manipulate the whistle sound i could have made the jeep sound like The Jetsons.
Yes this is somewhat common with inexpensive filters. I've been lucky so far with my Auto Zone filter.
Мартин, спасибо за видео. Посмотрел много ваших роликов, некоторые из них оказались для меня полезными. Привет из России
Thanks for posting this video mr. Martinbuilt. I'm having a difficult time trying to remove the hard one. Now I know how. I'll try again when I get time. Thank again.
also spray some lube on that one. That will also help. Your welcome.
Using a pair of needle nose vise grips to squeeze the clip will help free up your hands to pull the hose off.
Very good detail oriented video. Thank you.
Got a Sub. Best car video I’ve ever watched hands down
As always Martin, excellent video. I appreciate that you went through every step ~ and ~ I especially liked,
that you took apart the old fuel filter (exactly as I would do or have done) I always want to know these things.
I just bought this part on your Amazon page / link, as provided... Thank You!
I love your page man... It is the first stop and very best knowledge resource for me, as a Jeep WJ DIY'er!
I like that you think and approach many matters in the ways you do, it really suits me.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you so much for the king words I do appreciate that.
Exceptional Video!! Well Done!! Thank you, you have saved me over $250.00. Thank you SO VERY MUCH!!!
Dude, thanks. Just changed mine. This saved me a lot of time. Gonna cut it open just to see what was going on. I think it wasn't the original so it might not be too bad.
glad you found it helpful.
Great video. Everything explained perfectly. You helped me changed mine in my 4.0. I had hard starts and with the new filter is much better but not perfectly ok. Thank you very much.
Glad you found it helpful
Nice video - very thorough. Thank you.
Thanks this really helped and was well detailed so even my dumb ass couldn’t mess it up.
Glad it worked out for you.
Great video. Extremely helpful .
Thanks sir I definitely got to change mine on my 2002 jeep grand Cherokee limited 4.7ho great video
Glad it helped
Great video! This helps me tremendously! Thank you!
Fantastic instruction and emphasis on this man. Great video.
Thank you, I appreciate that.
I'm glad you liked it and found it helped.
Thanks man. I watched the video once through and changed out the part no problem. Keep it up.
Thanks for the detailed video, very well done 👍 My 04 4.0 dosen't seem to have a Schrader valve( it has some kind of metal cap that faces down) so I pulled the fuel pump fuse and ran it until it stopped. I still had a lot of fuel leak out of the filter and the lines were a PITA to remove even with WD
Also, I cut my old Mopar branded filter open and found it interesting that it has "Fram" with part numbers stamped inside on each end inside. I installed a new Mopar filter ( cost about $90) due to the issues I heard other had with aftermarket.
Thanks again!
good job sir very well explained
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
thank you for watching.
Great job Martin, Im gonna change mine this week and your video here was a God send👍👍
Glad it helped
Excellent video . Watched your video then replaced mine without a hitch. Thank you!!!!
Hey man I got a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Since I changed the fuel filter it started to make a wisling noise . Do you have any idea what the problems is ?
Good stuff brother I wish every DIY video on this jeep was like this one 👌👍🍻
Thanks 👍
I like how detailed you are 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks
You are very welcome, glad you like it.🙂
Thanks Brother 👍
No problem 👍
Great video as usual Martin
Glad you enjoyed it
I have been watching all kinds of videos and are very helpful and money saver but why have no one make a video on a easy way to remove or tighten the antenna on the fender on 2002 jeep grand Cherokee limited
Great video, very detailed. Trick to getting the one fuel line off. Thanks for sharing
