- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- This is a very detailed video on how to perform a fuel tank tuck on all Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. I'll show you all the differences from the early 99-01 and the late models 02-04 and will cover different ways to perform this tuck.
This is also a great video on how to remove the bumper cover and how to lower the gas tank.

You are a tremendous resource for the WJ. Thank you Martin
Thank you Max I appreciate that.
Finally! An awesome detailed video on how to do this. This is the next project for me on my WJ. Thanks! Looking forward to part 2.
Glad it was helpful!
GREAT my friend. You are unique. ALWAYS a real pleasure to follow you. Hello from Italy.
Thank you very much!
You're great craftsman. Thanks for doing an awesome detailed video of the gas tank tuck.
Thank you, glad you liked it.😊
Martin, your a great mechanic. Honestly, pretty sure your an engineer. Keep it up.
Wow, thanks
Do I plan on doing this to my WJ? No. Did I watch the whole thing? Absolutely. Really cool mod.
Thank you i'm glad you like that.
And thank you for watching the whole thing.😊
Harrison Ford modifies his fuel tank. Great video, giving me all kinds of ideas.
😆 glad you enjoyed it 😊 and thanks for watching.
Sir Martin. He is a master of WJ.
Thank you, Roberto I appreciate that.
Good video, I m planning to remove the fuel tank, thank you very much for the way to do it
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
i have a secondary tank in my spare wheel well, but am considering removing it and doing a tuck and getting a after market tank to take up that extra head room, thanks Martin this vid is very helpful to me and has made me almost certain i want a tuck.
Sounds great!
You gave me all the confidence to tackle this modification. Awesome video man. Thank you. Looks amazing
Thank you, I appreciate that, you can do it!
This is the best looking model of grand cherokees
I couldn't agree more.😊👍
Im going to to this to increase fuel capacity! Excellent video!
Would you build a custom fuel cell to increase fuel capacity?
@@martinbuilt I could see someone cutting two stock tanks up and plastic welding them together to make a bigger one
Your videos have been getting better and better everytime, love it
Happy to hear that!
Thanks for these videos, been planning on doing this to mine for awhile. Replaced the completely rotted out skid plate before winter because I'm sure it wouldn't last another. Will tuck the tank this summer. You are a brave man dealing with that weight yourself, I think I'll pay with some Buds for a second set of hands. Great video as always!
You're very welcome. I hope it goes well for you. I recommend measuring several times before any cutting. Just take your time. I'm glad you found it helpful 👍
Tank tuck has been on my list for a while!!! Definitely can’t sit for part 2!
I should have it edited and posted by Friday
martinbuilt can’t wait!
That space under the floor cover would be a great place to stow some tools and stuff. Slick job.
Thank you, yes it works out great for things like that.
Absolute amazing work Martin! Wish I knew how to weld and had a garage so i could attempt this. I envy you lol. This is how they should of came from factory. Good job!
Thanks 👍
Muy buena explicación. Lo felicito desde Venezuela.

Thanks for watching. 😊
Dude... This WJ is clean looks really nice i have a few ideas for mine
Thank you, glad I could help.
Yeah dude! I ain’t finished watching it! But that’s the next project on my WJ after I get done getting my front Dana 30 back in! And the 242 transfer case in replacing the np 247. Appreciate your videos! Now back to learning what you are teaching! Thanks Martin!
That's on my list as well, been looking for a 242HD.
Great video....getting ready to install a new skid plate on a 04, and this has been extremely helpful
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.

Thank you, I really really appreciate that!
@@martinbuilt cant wait to do this on my 2001 wj. You make it look too easy though. Great idea and great execution on this project. This mod is almost like doing a lift kit. You get some of the same benefits. What are you going to use the void for now?
@@billm5291 so far I relocated the factory amp that was under the back seat to the void and then I moved the Power Distribution Block that was under the hood to under the back seat.

I like your removing the bumper cover idea for access. My tank is leaking from a broken hose (I hope).I now have the kit you linked to along with push pins for reassembly coming. I'm hoping I don't have to pull the tank and can find the leak without doing so. Thanks! 😎
I'm glad to hear you find the content helpful. good luck on your finding that leak.
I can't imagine that the tank itself is leaking I would think it would either be on the fill hose or vent hose or possibly the fuel pump assembly gasket on top of the tank.
@@martinbuilt Whatever it is it's pressurized. When I first noticed it it was coming out fast. I had to haul but to get home before it ran out of fuel.

Now I only have heat no cold ac. My freon reads full no leak. So could it be the ac low-pressure switch that's not on the accumulator and trying to figure out where it's at or can it be the ac expansion valve by the firewall? Coming soon!
i recently dropped the tank on a 03 overland. i was able to pop all wire connections and lines before i took the tank down. i took them off the fuel filter and left the lines on the tank side. the main reason was i able to jump the pump from the connector to pump the fuel out.
Thumbs up for the scribed line
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
Another excellent video. I had planned on this for awhile and after cutting the floor out to change the pump it has been moved to further up the list. Unlike Nevada in Michigan I have snow and cold coming soon so it has to wait until spring, my garage is dedicated to my Harley..
One of the biggest reasons for me is to stop dragging it on the ground in the woods. No rocks here but plenty of tight trails and mud bogs, that tank is like an anchor trying to back out of a mud hole, ask me how I know...
Moving to AZ soon, looking forward to a totally different type of wheeling, lived out there in the 80's and had a 79 Toyota 4x4 p/u. Took that thing everywhere.
Thank you, yeah, I'm from Iowa used to do the wheeling in the mud and then send hours washing out the mud inside and out.
I recommend doing it, I bashed my fuel tank so hard it shifted over and ripped a fuel line out while in Moab, first project getting back from the trip was tucking the tank.
@@aju3307 Oh yeah, been there but not that hard. I caught it on a buried stump in the mud, had me held like Velcro not to mention pushed it up a far amount. Decided right then first project in spring is the tuck.
Awesome work and thought process I love your work nice job .
Thank you, John. I really appreciate that.
@@martinbuilt I might get around to doing that!! how much weight did you shed from vehicle all sad & done.
200 lbs
I kind of doubt I shed too much weight at all because once you add the 14 gauge plate that adds some weight back you could use the light duty skid plate over the heavy duty one that would shed quite a bit as much as 25 pounds.
I have considered building a new skip plate with the light duty one to reduce weight. If I was using for off road use I would definitely use the heavy duty skip plate.
Awesome Martin!!! love the new project, rock on!
Thanks so much!
Excellent work buddy. Thx.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. 👍
Nice plate....Let’s Go Flyers.
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing this video!
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.
Talk about custom fabrication. Awesome video! What state are you in? Can I send you a skid plate to fab?
Thank you. I am in Nevada. I don't have access to a beedroller anymore; my friend moved to Texas.
Had this on my list to do with the other rear end projects, bumper spare tire carrier, and raise the tank, the well was useless space for me as the 33"x 10" wont fit in it and trying to custom fit stuff to the space is less useful than raising the tank, now i know what to expect. just have to figure out how to relocate that evap system so i can tuck up the bumper better.
Nice work on all your stuff Martin, keep up the good work.
BTW i did the hydraulic fan delete as well, just a bit different, running 3 electric fans on mine, one full size hemi v8 electric pulling inside and two 10" behind the grill pushing, don't need to run either of the 10's unless i'm crawling at 110 deg + outside.
nice, what vehicle did you get your fan from, thank you for watching and subscribing.
@@martinbuiltOn the inside of the rad is out of a 07 Grand with a 5.7 (fan shroud fits fine even though it looks to big) and the small 10's behind the grill are off a 05 mercedes gl 500 that was next to the Grand (junkyard), right now running low speed off ignition and hi speed on a switch, waiting for a fan controller in the mail, seems to work fine so far.
Yes, an engineer. I asked a lot of mechanics on UA-cam to help me solve the faults in my 2004 Grand Cherokee.
Which my brother gave me from the United States of America.
In fact, I told him at the beginning not to buy me a jeep
The reason is that it is a car that is not widespread with us, and its agent demands very high prices in the price of spare parts and does not provide them completely, and the company is a Jeep company, a company that does not care about the future of its cars in our country, the Republic of Yemen, located south of Saudi Arabia.
What is important, my brother bought it, and when I saw it, it was a beautiful car, we customs it and took it out of the enamel at the end of 2012, and when my brother drove by it, he was amazed that it was very slow and heavy to walk and said its money was fast. I took the car from it and used it to this day.
I discovered that it had faults as a result of faults and that it was considered a higher conversation, as I had Japanese cars that had no computers or sensors, and I could not understand them and I thought that I would overcome their faults by finding alternatives to their parts, but I knew the work of computers and sensors and their connection to each other makes it very difficult to compose alternative parts
I will continue ..
One of the most important faults is its fuel dispensing in a very large way, in 100 kilometers it spends 20 liters
The second malfunction was the gasoline vapor, which was causing the gasoline odor to spread inside the cabin
Other holidays are very slow torque
The third malfunction turns off its engine for a few seconds while it is walking
Just seconds.
The fourth malfunction is the smuggling of hot gases from the engine to the radiator, as a result of the fans stopping, so the engine overheated badly before
The important thing is now, I want to know how to make the parts of the evaporation system generously, how I can discover the faults in it and how to install them correctly.
The truth is that the company is trivial in many matters
For example, when the fans have stopped, there is no substitute for their work. If you are not careful, do not realize that the fans have stopped until the head of the engine has been struck.
Gasoline vapor has many confusing parts and is tight for maintenance
Likewise, the gasoline pump needs to be removed from the tank
Fuel filtering is complicated and not the same as other cars, so it is not available or available and is very expensive.
There are no benzene pellets
The plexus and its strings do not dissolve easily
The raw materials for the pipes inside the engine are very poor
Harden and crack.
The car has plastic bumpers and there are no towing hooks to drag anything
The headlights are difficult to weigh, and the color of the glass becomes opaque
There are a lot of ridiculous things these companies do not want their cars to spread so they leave matters to their greedy agent.
Imagine the price of headlamps or headlights and taillights sells them for 1150 dollars, while in America they are all for 250 dollars
Many talk, thank you for your patience
With you was Muhammad Ahmad Al-Danoun from YemenImportant faults followed.
On minute 13:04 how much did u cut on the fueler hose side it look more then a inch and u dont say how much beside just that the video is awesome

Hello just saw your video
I live in Pahrump
And I just took possession of a 02 grand Cherokee
With the gas tank out for a bad fuel pump
But the replacement they acquired looks the same but does not fit
It seems like it’s to big for the whole
It does push down to the correct high but will not fit in hole the gasket seems to thick or the dia of the head is to big
Have you heard of this before
And how often are you changing these pumps
Install the gasket 1st in the hole of the tank, then slide the fuel pump assembly into the hole.
Great job!!! Amazing!!! One question... how that affect to de gravity center?. Now you take 78 liters of gas over 30 cms upper. That is important or not?
It's a Jeep, not a Porsche
In theory it raises the center of gravity but it shouldn't be enough to notice. I street drive mine with no sway bars lol
Nice job Martin. That plasma cutter sure came in handy. Are you going out to Rick's place for the bead rolling?
Yeah that plasma cutter does a great job. Yep went out to Rick's and got it done. Part 2 will start at place bead rolling that metal.
Welder sounds pretty good. You got it cranked on battle ship steel mode.
Thanks, it's a Miller 212 got it set on Auto. That seemed to work well.
I did on my wj sub tank with 50liter and put a spare tire carrier and close the circle in the trank abaut 15 year ago
Question. What did you use for painting your WJ? Did you spray it or did you have it professionally done?
This is still the original paint, brilliant Black Pearl.
That's exactly what I don't like on my 01 GC. The gas tank is mounted so low to the ground. Wish I could do this to mine. Just wanted to ask you, have you ever used a Superchips tuner on a 01 GC 4.7 non HO before? Thinking about buying one to boost the HP a little and to eliminate the speed limiter too. Not that I plan to drive over a 100 mph though. Thanks Martin.
I have the Superchips Traildash 2, I love the gauge package and some of the bells and whistles it comes with but I can't tell any difference in performance.
Respect ! Very nice job !!!
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it 👍 😊
wondering if u tried just a) flipping the spare cut out 180deg matching the factory bead rolls, b) just cutting 4 (or whatever) in from the spare cut out depth and putting back in?
that not a bad idea, other then it would eliminate any trunk space.
Awesome video great work !
Thank you very much!
Martin,
what is that EVAP unit you removed on the driver bumper side called?
Good job buddy 👍👍👍
Thank you I really do appreciate that.
And thank you for watching 👀
You done great job, I really like it. I want to ask about the hood vent where I could buy this.
Thank you, I used an MMD 71323-00 hood scoop that I purchased from www.americanmuscle.com for 109.99 free shipping.
I have an 89L LPG tank in the spare tyre space. + the original fuel tank... = many, many miles of autonomy :)
Did you end up having any measurable space between the bottom of that plate and the top of the tank or was really close?
I believe at the highest point of the fuel tank there was 3/8 of an inch space to the bottom of the plate.
After your done tucking that fuel tank i think you need to do a tuck on that license plate and try to hide it aswell 😉 Lets go Pens! 🐧
On a serious note beautiful WJ man I hope that one day I can get mine looking as good as yours does! Got yourself a subscriber.
Thank you, Jon
Great video Martin. I would love to do this but I'm afraid it's too big a job for me to tackle. But oh how I would love an access hole at the bottom of the tire well to get to the fuel pump. Guess it's impossible to ascertain dead center of where to cut a hole and I'd have to drop the tank anyway to cut the hole. What would it have cost Chrysler engineers to just design one in to begin with during original build? Nothing.
there is a video out there where a person cut the hole to access the fuel pump without dropping the tank. I wouldn't do it, it would be way to risky.
@@martinbuilt Hi Martin, yes I agree. I watched one or two videos and looked at some photos of some guy at JeepForum dot com who did an opening in the well to gain access to the fuel pump and drilled through the tank at one point. He filled the hole with JB weld, it looked like a mess when he was finished. At certain spots there is only 1 inch between the top of the tank and the bottom of the tire well. I would only do it if I dropped the tank first and used a 6" hole saw after establishing exactly where to cut the hole. But if I dropped the tank, I might as well put in a new pump while it's down. Years ago I installed an auxiliary gas tank on a Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 by myself but I'm afraid those days are over. lol. Is the tire well that you removed of any use, could it be repurposed on a roof rack as a tire holder?
My skid is about rusted in half, tank tuck is on my to do list
I don't miss vehicles from the mid-west like Iowa where I am from for that reason.
Nice, I knew this was coming, was looking forward to it. No more saggy diaper ha ha.
yep you got it, saggy diaper that is pretty much what it looked like.
@@martinbuilt Looking forward to part 2. I assume the spare tire is going on the roof rack?
I like your work very much I would love to do this like you I probably will not be going off road very much nowhere much to go where I live but I still lifted my WJ 2" with springs and put some Wrangler 18" wheels with BFGs and its nice to now that I could go off road if I wanted to.
I am going off subject I thought about doing this much like you did a 4" tuck another Idea I had was to make a lockable gun case not many people would think to look in there for hunting guns as I got new BFGs they are strong so probably get away with no spare wheel got a can of that air stuff as a backup.
thank you, yea that would be a great idea, here is one of my followers that I sure you would like the way he has done his tuck..

Not permanently but just when off-roading
@@martinbuilt
then i think I'll go with tire mount then
@@dannyhuffman3587
I don't like this as I'm using the roof top to carry stuff so it will be hard to unload everything to get to the tire
