He does what he does and he does it incredibly well…would you rather have something with 20 years of music lessons behind it, or something with some actual feeling. Music classes can’t teach you everything. Spoken as someone who has had one guitar lesson in their entire life 😆
I disagree. As bass lines go, his are not that distinctive or special really but he is an awesome songwriter for sure. He was the fun charm of blink. I don't think Tom could have made it without him.
Mark wears his love of 80's music on his sleeve, and it shows up in his playing. His melodic lines are straight out of 1980's postpunk, influenced by The Cure and Joy Division.
Mark is the reason I picked up the bass when I was 13. That was 20 years ago now🤯 my influences have changed a little over the years but blink got me playing and I still love to go back and play their songs. This is what lead me toward playing heavier punk songs, mostly Rancid stuff! Anyway, sorry to go off on one...but Mark Hoppus is a fucking legend of the industry and deserves all the credit he gets
Do you mind if I ask you some bass questions please? Some facts to make you wince... I don't know anything about music theory. I can recognise some notes on the sheet they write notes on and the corresponding notes on a keyboard BUT ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE could I play along to anything from the sheet. I have held a guitar twice and someone taught me some notes from Rolling Stones - Paint It Black and also some notes from Neds Atomic Dustbin - Happy. I have "played" a bass once for about 20 mins, when I thought I had a good groove going but had no idea what notes I was playing and it probably sounded terrible to those around me. 1 Do I need to learn to read music before I learn bass? 2 Do I need to learn the basics of guitar playing before I can learn bass? 3 If the answer to 2 is yes, should I get an acoustic? Or electric? I would need an amp anyway if I got a bass. Thanks for your time.
I'm so glad you included "Emo", it's one of my top favorite Blink songs and no one seems to know it, but I adore it (I've tried for years but I've still never seen a live version of it)
Yeah emo is such a good song- I remember many a night listening to it as a teenager in bed with my headphones - along with heaps of other blink songs obviously….
Great video again! I love how some of Mark's basslines are so simple but powerful, and when Tom adds his same approach with guitar it's special. Like Pretty little girl for example. Both play such simple stuff yet it sounds like there's more. This was actually the first time I ever heard that song instrumental and had to listen to it 5 times cos it's just so good!

This is wonderful! I remember playing all these before I got too old. I was a Tom guy so when he left, I kinda did too. But good pick-up with Skiba. Love Alkaline. Now, with a dead end job and a funless life, it's good to see a glimmer of hope in this mumble rap world!
They have some really bouncy and intricate fills, specially Cali Delux but they dont have the chordy parts or really high solo esque parts he is usually known for, Nine specially, on that record it seems he mostly stuck to just filling the bass frequency, kinda like in Neighborhoods
Yeah it's just drums, guitar and keys. Plus I'd still say Lycanthrope is probably the best bass line on that album, though there are a few other cool parts here and there.
Life's so Boring was gonna be on EOTS but was scrapped. They brought it back and worked on it heaps and it evolved into Story of a Lonely Guy. Rumours say that at least, but I believe
Also very similar progression as Feeling This. It’s become a staple of his and is a big reason why I love his bass playing. It’s distinctively Mark and quite versatile for a such a relatively simple progression
I can't remember if Nine had come out or not when I put this one together actually. In any case, I don't remember hearing anything that incredible on Nine, haha.
I am really looking forward to hearing these. I just thought I better mention that Neighbourhoods isn't "post break up" though. Nor is Dogs Eating Dogs. Sssssshhh though, nobody reads my comments so you can edit your description and I won't take offence if you delete this comment after. As an adult with autism, it's more important to me that IT is right, than it is that I am right.
'post-breakup' is referring to the first breakup, as in 2004. So yes, Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs would technically be post-breakup records. Plus you wouldn't even really call Tom leaving the second time a breakup, considering it was only one member leaving. There wasn't a hiatus or anything during that period, only for the original split in '04.
@@JrnmoSanB Nah. I think there are no good songs on California or the Deluxe edition or whatever its called and I would refuse to pay to see them live right now. It's basically a cover band. Don't get me started on Travis either. All he writes are bad songs for other "Pop Punk artists."
their new stuff is cool too, i feel like its just matts voice that doesnt fit blink :( i mean hes great, but in alkaline on the other hand its still better than nothing at all

Maybe not the most technical one out there, but Mark is still a solid, catchy, melodic bassist with a distinctive sound and voice. Love his work!
Perfect for pop punk really

The Carousel Bassline is my all time favorite
Truth. I like the live version from the mark Tom and Travis show
@@thedeadofpool same, it’s the best version

Sure is. Also so glad to see he pulled through his chemo and is cancer free. Let's see what 2022 brings for him musically!

Yer dealer has good stuff
Same but with Tom (the guitar for me)- in general blink made me want to play guitar and write songs
Same, I picked up the bass back in 2002 at the ripe old age of 14. I have replayed in in quite some time. Blink were the reason I got into music.
That down outro is absolutely legendary. All 3 of them went off there.
I'm so glad you included "Emo", it's one of my top favorite Blink songs and no one seems to know it, but I adore it (I've tried for years but I've still never seen a live version of it)

great video man. that interlude from the live version of down is awesome
nice. Mark is what made me pick up the bass.

Story of a lonely guy 🤯🔥
