@@bannedmann4469 To quote an article from Afropunk about what I actually mean,
"If there’s one role that nearly every black actress has had to rely on at some point in her career, it’s the Sassy Black Friend. You know the one. She’s the character who seems to perpetually exist outside of the plot, a sort of one woman Chorus whose main purpose is to cast her eyes to the heavens in the most exaggerated of eye rolls, click her tongue, and make smarmy comments about what’s going on - while never actually being allowed to take part in what’s going on. There are many variations on the type - some less or more sassy than others - but always at the core of the character is the fact that she isn’t a character but a caricature of the black woman."
*Pop culture SBFs include Luther from Mission Impossible, Dionne from Clueless, and Lucius from The Incredibles.*
This role was NOT that, and THAT is what I mean. I'm not even going to dive into your desire to minimalize bisexual representation, especially in POC. Is this movie the BEST stride possible? No, but it was trying and that matters.

About his wife, I think that at first she was a victim that he had slept with, he took her leg and then they found out that she was pregnant. @Elias Lionheart It's not that he's hot, it's that he's using charm and treating her with "respect" as a way to manipulate her into thinking he's safe. That's how a lot of abusive relationships start. The person seems nice, different, they have a good job or are respected in their community. Then they flip on a dime and no one believes the victim.

I found Ann to be one of the more interesting characters, and she's possibly suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. She's married to Steve, is fully aware of his doings, and her missing leg implies that she was a former victim of his. Even when she's relieved that he's dead, she still tries to strangle Noa.

    • @samf.s.7731
      @samf.s.7731 2 роки тому +127

I didn't think that was the case. The 1st layer of the film is the horror comedy, the 2nd is all the metaphors.
His cannibalism is a metaphor for his cheating, he just wants a body count. He tries to romanticize it too which is hilarious.
I thought his wife stays married to him because he's a plastic surgeon and he gives her all the face lifts she could ever want.
She knows he cheats and she forgives him.
Her limb loss means that he hurts her, in a similar manner to the other ladies. But she's still complicit because she gets things out of it.
A house, kids, and the chance to brag about being married to a plastic surgeon who's goodlooking sure play a part in it too.
On the first layer, it could be that he didn't kidnap her or anything, she was complicit either from the start or became complicit when she found out later on during their married life. On the 2nd layer, women like that exist, they think "Oh but I invested too much into this" or "Oh I want the free stuff" or "The most important thing is to have a man that I can flaunt", and of course there are women who just straight up get conditioned into believing fuckboi mysoginistic BS, like "That's how guys all are", or "everyone makes sacrifices in relationships" or "Yeah that's the price for having a guy who works while you don't have to do anything". Like all the girls, she's hurt by his actions, but she's willing to put up with it.
      Edited for clarification.

@@samf.s.7731 oooh I like the idea of the cannibalism representing infidelity. I def get where you're getting that. And I can totally see how Ann is like an actual stockholm syndrome case in that she's also a victim-- both in the literal sense as a former "meat" girl and in the figurative sense as an abused spouse. Like she's damaged enough to become jealous of his other girls and yet feel indifferent about his death because he's awful. I mean, she has kids to take care of. His downfall is potentially theirs too, so she could just be acting in their interest in her own coldblooded reasoning. wouldn't surprise me if lots of abusive/toxic marriages have been kept together for too long because of the fear of how it would effect the kiddos, so that could be part of what her character represents rather than just "pick me" like Amanda puts it

    • @BooksandBuns
      @BooksandBuns 2 роки тому +13

I sure hope it ain't Stockholm syndrome. Although, if it is, wouldn't it be fucking ironic? A fake syndrome created by a man to explain why a woman acted politely to her captor so that she wouldn't get killed, turned into something pathological without an ounce of fact behind it. It would be ironic, but ultimately, heavily overplayed. Stockholm is a boring, overused trope

Hahaha, I haven't seen the movie, but I was thinking the same thing throughout Amanda's recap. I feel like maybe the writer picked her glute because it's a play on the whole "men treating women like nothing but a piece of ass" thing. But if they wanted to make it sexual without the glaring plot hole of Noah still being able-bodied afterwards, they could've had him take one of her tits instead. It's still has sexual overtones, it would largely fix the plot hole, AND it'd have a nice element of resonance with the myth of ancient one-breasted warrior women.

I enjoyed the film and appreciated that its commentary felt present but not heavy-handed. There's one point in it where Noa & Penny are talking through the wall and Penny says something about how they need to remember that none of it is their fault, and that it is never their fault: as a sexual assault survivor that part resonated hard and gave me an even deeper appreciation of this film. With that phrase, the actual cannibalism of these women being an allegory for not just a shit dating life but for actual sexual assault seemed solidified. Noa's process of "going along" was not just reminiscent but near identical to that of enduring an abusive partner and pretending to be who they want you to be for as long as it takes you to gain the strength needed to make an escape.
I'm actually surprised if the concept of this film is more focused on dating life and less on the sexual assault factors - both certainly play a part, but the latter seems prevalent. Also very surprised that @amandathejedi didn't actually mention the assault factor - though I suppose if you can manage to not see it, you are lucky.

It’s not her fault, but she can either only gather the strength or only “wake up” to Steve’s actual abuse when it’s affecting others.
I love that the ladies get away and there’s a sense that while they’ve suffered, they’ll eventually be okay, especially if she can rely on the other survivors.

Like I was rooting for her dont get me wrong and she was very cleverly manipulating him, but I wasnt anxious about the possibility of her dying. But by god if Mollie wasnt getting out alive then theres no way I wouldve liked this movie. Penny too. I didnt want them to throw corpses at us just because. Beyond the obvious moral aspect, cannibalism’s super dangerous. Any parasites or diseases that an animal has are much easier to catch from their meat if they’re the same type of animal as you, because the parasites/bacteria are adjusted to their specific host species. Cross species contamination is much harder. Would not recommend partaking.

Just because "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Hills Have Eyes" exist doesn't mean cannibalism in horror (or fiction in general) is usually a "low-class" thing. I'd argue it's usually the opposite.

I watched this film with my dad, who was super grossed out by the literal cannibalism. But as someone who has been in an abuse situation, I felt seen. It was cool to see abuse situations be depicted comedically, without making fun of the victims.

    Spoiler warning:
My take on his wife is she lost her leg naturally through an accident or illness and somehow Steve was able to eat it. That'll put more meaning into the "give yourself to someone" line and also explain why the wife seemed to only has one limb missing with prosthetics

    • @SapphicKnits

Do you think that maybe they met a little bit before the accident and that's when he first ate human meat? He mentions that he tried for the first time at 19, so maybe they got married young and she was his first "taste?" I don't know if that works chronologically, but just a guess

    • @theyoutubeanalyst3731

I think you guys are reading too much into it. She was clearly distressed about losing her leg, and the camera juxtaposed the shot of her missing leg to the shot of Steve's healthy two legs. He did it. That's why she didn't care when he was shot.

@@theyoutubeanalyst3731 Then why did she want to kill Noa?

    • @danieltasehayden

@@SapphicKnits I've been thinking about this.
      A. Unreliable narrator could be in effect since he never told her he was married. So maybe saying 19 makes it seem like less of a sociopathic thing as opposed to mid-20s?
      Or
      B. They could have been in a very codependent relationship where he took care of her and then she gave him her leg and helps him take care of business
      Or
      C. He was really in his later 20s and she was a patient of his he fell for.

@@dancechica she probably felt very spiteful and upset after finding out Steve cheated on her. In the mirror you can see Anne pulling her face back to make wrinkles disappear so she is probably very self conscious and thinks she will be replaced. Since she is too much of a coward to kill Steve and also benefits from the business she decides to kill Noah. She also doesn't know Noah had friends to defend her, so by killing Noah (the evidence) the business can continue

I just recently found you (yesterday) and I have to say, I absolutely LOVE your take and explanations of movies and shows. I used to watch a lot of FoundFlix but you have a way of being so relatable and entertaining with your opinions and retelling of the stories, that it feels like i'm listening to a friend of mine rant about what they watched over the weekend. You are the best. Ill be back for sure....after I'm finished binging all your videos.

This is the director's first movie!? Like holy crap, way to hit the ground running! I wasn't ever really scared, only a little disturbed in a few parts, but mostly just invested and of course frustrated like with most kidnap-centric horror films lol. But it's a really fun metaphor like you point out! Well, not "fun" but artistically it's cool how the subject is handled. It kinda felt like a Jordan Peele movie in its approach to theme and metaphor that way. And dammit I just love me some Sebastian Stan. Dude gives every role 100% and so did everyone else in this movie imo. Never even heard of anyone else in this movie and they all did a fantastic job, especially the actor who plays Noa.

Per some of the comments below and this being an allegory for sexual assault … my first reaction was that it’s about the flesh trade. Rich men “consuming” young women. The absolute power that their money can buy in owning, using and consuming to meet their own needs :/
