Legends say I'm still laughing
Turned out to be true
lol
so am i!
Aye and the legends be true
Don't know about the movie, but is it weird that I really like that 'where's my mind' remix? I think I need to find it...
One thing that impressed me is that the Gabriel scenes were actually done by a dancer/contortionist. There's actually someone out there who can move like that backwards. That's pretty impressive. That said I didn't figure out the twist ( in retrospect I suspect I was being lazy ) so I enjoyed it a bit more but every one of your criticisms are spot on. I'll add one more criticism. There is no way that story should have a happy ending. She's got superpowers, a psychotic alter ego, and dozens of murders. She's either going to be locked up for life, turned into a lab rat, or killed on sight by SWAT.
Right?! When it ended I immediately thought... oh so they're not gunna show her being arrested? ok..
@@chantel4405 lol same I was like this is gonna be complicated for her lawyer
Not gonna lie I jokingly told my mom “wow this random white lady just killed this whole police department and not a single shot was fired into her head. she has white privilege ....”
@@vikkidonn white privilege and plot armor on her side 😂
I was disappointed by the ending. I really thought Gabriel was going to permanently become the dominant twin and the movie ends with him escaping into the night
Can’t stop thinking about this Dwight quote from the office 😂: “When my mother was pregnant with me, they did an ultrasound and found she was having twins. When they did another ultrasound a few weeks later, they discovered that I had resorbed the other fetus. Do I regret this? No. I believe his tissue has made me stronger. I now have the strength of a grown man and a little baby.”
YEAH SAME HERE
That's one of the funniest quotes , I forgot all about that. Dwight shrute is a gold mine
This is the exact UA-cam comment I needed this morning! You made my day better!!
That last sentence on his strength always confused me. Can someone help
Idk why but it creeps me out
The prison scene is one of the best set pieces I've seen so far this year. Zoë Bell with an 80s mullet, throwing other prisoners at that thing, was hilarious.
Thank you! She looked so familiar but I couldn't place her.
The prison scene was the exact moment when I went from "eh, this is an ok movie" to "holy shit, this is my favorite move now, gotta rewatch."
Just remember that James Wan didn't direct that last Conjuring, so we can give him a pass on that one 😆
agreed 👀
Saw this last night with the partner and we had a fucking _blast_ the whole way through. Still convinced that this was basically what James Wan wanted _Dead Silence_ to be without all the executive meddling.
I am also convinced that this was the result of Wan watching his buddy Leigh Whannell's _Upgrade_ and thinking, "hmm, how can I make this with less tech and more skull eruptions?"
omg! the upgrade comparison is so funny, i also loved this movie cause it was fun, the plot is all over the place
There's no way that Wan killed it with bonkers, uproarious ending, yet completely failed his intentions leading up to that point. We got the movie he wanted, and viewers are doing now, exactly what he wanted.
I left 'Upgrade' hoping that Wannell wrote a sequel at the same time. If you think about it, there's a pretty awesome revenge/continuation story in there. I think he left little nuggets with the 'Stem not being able to operate low-tech equipment' angle.
Okay I really liked Upgrade and felt it worked better. For me this just needed more, OR I needed alcohol and a group of friends to make the parts I felt were slow work better
@@AmandaTheJedi agree Upgrade way way better
@@AmandaTheJedi don't let anybody push you around your cool ✌❤🙂
after Emily locks away Gabriel, you can hear the lamp in the last scene still being affected somehow by electricity. this leads me to believe that her saving her family and jailing Gabriel, was actually an inception-like 'waking dream' created by Gabriel to make Emily think she won.
Just a theory.
I like that theory! My personal interpretation was that Gabriel wasn't as sealed away as she thought and he was going to get out later
Gabriel had some sick parkour moves.
legend says Gabriel's first word was "parkour!"
Somebody watched the final act of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and was like "I could make a movie on this concept alone!"
Being a twin myself, I find stories about twins that get reabsorbed like that absolutely horrifying. But this was not the way to do it. Not even slightly.
I hate horror movies but absolutely love Amanda's reviews of them.
Same
Aquaman is the scariest film ever made
I know. It was that psycho hell-spawn creature Amber Heard in it.
@@EatinPaste tbh I wouldn't be surprised if we found out that it was all a publicity stunt by them
Definitely. Especially for those afraid of drowning....
The TV version of Showgirls is scarier, with all the women wearing cartoon underwear.
I love how the end of the movie seems to think that Madison isn't going to serve like 583 years in prison for literally butchering like 32 cops. Best case scenario she pleads insanity and lives the rest of her life strapped to a bed in a nuthouse. This movie BLEW hahaha. 😂
She wouldn't be so lucky. She clearly has superpowers. If they don't kill her on sight then they lock her in isolation a lab/prison for the rest of her life.
Lol.. she can obviously plead insanity due to parasitic infection. The cop and the medical files clearly show it. If it's a real case then she'll most likely be put in a ward
oh let's just wait for the sequel
She can prove that she have her evil twin in the back of her head....
Security footage from the prison cell and records from the hospital should be able to clear things up.
That scene in the police department was literally so fucking fun to watch. I can't describe the feeling of that scene, but I loved it so fucking much
I've heard you mention "VelociPastor" before, but this is the first time I've actually seen you flash up the poster... seeing it written down makes more sense than what I had in mind, which was a movie about fast-moving macaroni.
I watched this with friends on the couch and we had so much fun with it! I don’t know if I would have had the same experience with it if I had seen the full trailer, though. I went into it without knowing almost anything and also wasn’t being super observant of all the little details that Amanda is pointing out here, so I didn’t see the twin thing coming until the medical records were found. In all, I loved it and genuinely had a good time watching it with my friends!
Also, if you’re even in Seattle I HIGHLY recommend doing the underground tour, it’s so cool!
I was only meh for it because the main actress was so bad but the twist had me hooked and inwas creeped out at how Gabriel moved. I loved it.
I seriously couldn't tell if her and the sister were being bad on purpose, or if they were just bad at acting 😂
Yeah they were both Walmart versions of better actors
I believe the acting was bad on purpose. Literally while I was watching the movie, I kept thinking about how I felt like I was watching a soap opera? Because of how the lines were being said. Soap operas (the ones I’ve seen at least) tend to have over the top acting to where it’s kind of bad? Plus, there were a few people in this movie that I’ve seen in other movies and their acting wasn’t as “bad” as it was in Malignant. Knowing this movie was meant to not be serious, I want to say the acting was intentional.
Ah, yes, Aquaman, my favorite horror movie.
The story of Edward Mordake meets M Nights "Split" style superhuman with a sound track inspired by AHS 1984 and a pinch of psi-paranormal that never really develops past a plot device to give the monster a voice. Wasn't a fan of it as a whole. Its like Wan wanted to do Camp but wasn't willing to own it. Cinematography was great though. I also really enjoyed the sound design and soundtrack. The story for me just seemed uninspired though. I was ahead of the movie, for the remainder of the movie, only after the first act.
when the “big twist” came i think i mentally cracked because i started laughing at how stupid it was
I had so much fun watching Malignant! It was a wild ride for sure and all hell breaks loose in the third act.
It was so hilarious to see madison's sleeping face on the back (front) of the head while Gabriel is going to town with his killing spree.
Water-front castle property! Very valuable.
I definitely didn't think as much while watching this glorious joyride, I just let it unfold without trying to figure anything out and I loved every moment of it. I'm kind of glad it wasn't just 100% camp because it can get a little too much sometimes but this was perfect for me. Was wacky and out of pocket when it wanted to be and serious when it wanted to be. I don't think it needed to be one thing or another.
When...you showed the twin killing the guards...I started laughing so hard - This look like an "Epic Early 00's Mortal Combat Fatality" Montage. How is this a movie ? I- ...
I really enjoy it ^^ I found the campy moments refreshing. And it was nice to piece together the ‘mystery’ with my friend as we watched it.
Great video as always!
Fun fact that Underground Seattle tours are real and a lot of fun I went while I was living in Seattle as a kid when my cousins were visiting they’re really spooky
I loved this movie! 😂
The twist was so bizarre
My boyfriend didn't like that there was no explanation for the supernatural aspect but the movie was dumb enough that I could forgive it lol
The underground tours in Seattle are a thing! Ghost and historical based on your preferences! I’m from Seattle!
I think the ridiculous tone mixed with the serious subject matter makes it more effective. You'll probably never get general audiences to watch a serious movie about these issues, but you can slip them into something like this, and they aren't themselves depicted as silly, so if anything else it is more jarring and creates a conversation.
I get what you’re saying, but in my opinion I think it trivializes the important issues too much
The movie Herself does a fantastic job of showing the trauma that domestic abuse can cause
the seattle underground tours are very dope. 10/10 recommend.
I think that was the the point James Wan said dont put this in the same category as saw I think he just wanted to make something with a WFT did I just watch moment.
I remember going to the undeground seattle tour with a friend even though I'm from around here and I was still pretty interested!
They even have an adult tour where you can I think drink? and explore the really cool 'secret underground' business life' tied to the same company but we only did the basic which was still decent.
If you by chance catch this tour on a rare dry day, highly recommend because it was a bit musty down there but neat nonetheless.
I want James Wan to make a hundred more OTT movies like these. I found it so much more refreshing than the kid-friendly "based on a true story" BS of the Conjuring universe.
It sounds like you were *backed* into a corner by the tone of the movie.
I'll get my coat.
The movie was all over the place because it was paying tribute to different decades of horror movies. I recognize 70s 80s Japanese. I love the movie overall.
Word for word, as soon as you mentioned the teeth tumor, I thought of Aunt Voula in My Big Fat Greek Wedding:
"All my life, I had a lump at the back of my neck, right here. Always, a lump. Then I started menopause and the lump got bigger from the 'hormonees.' It started to grow. So I go to the doctor, and he did the bio... the b... bios... the... the 'bobopsy.' Inside the lump he found teeth and a spinal cord. Yes. Inside the lump was my twin."
...we quote this movie constantly in my house.
Professor Quirrell and Voldy are QUAKING
Gabriel looked like a mix of Basket Case and Voldemort
@10:52 that's where they fucked up by having the actress actually act backwards. That's when I knew there was a kuato on the back of her head.
so the twist is prof quirrell from the first hp movie
The movie was ridiculous and yet awesome at the same time. I love the scene where she went full John Wick on the police department lol.
The person who told her "You'll never be able to guess," is probably screaming at the mention.
Here I am, minding my business, watching your video and I get a commercial for lamb?!?? Now I’m so thrown off lmao wtf?!
I had no idea what to expect going in and almost turned it off after 20 minutes, I'm so glad I stuck with it cause the last 30 minutes were soooo much fun
My favorite comedy scene will be jail cell for AWHILE. I was in tears. So great. I truly love this movie more than I expected ha
I'm glad I missed the title sequence cause I was shook when I found d out it was her twin
Totally fine that you didn't like it, I mean this movie screams "divisive". But I freakin loved it. It's James Wan doing everything he's good at. From supernatural horror from The Conjuring and Insidious to detective investigation from Saw... and even his action efforts like Aquaman.
I can see why this movie won't work for some people but I was just along for the ride
I wanted it to be more of a ride
@@AmandaTheJedi As long as James wan keeps making movies like these, i will always support him. Man knows what he is doing. He really went for 80's camp horror and i love it. Will watch again.
@@AmandaTheJedi Did you watch insidious? You will know why i am talking about the movie, especially tip toe.......you know.
Underground Seattle is badass! It's crazy! There are parts of underground Seattle that is in tact and is a frozen moment in time with shops and all of an entirely different time period. there are creepy af areas too. Yeah they literally built on top of it...
I work in a movie theater and got to see this on the big screen for free with a friend in an otherwise empty theater and under those precise circumstances it was a hilarious good time but if I'd had to pay for the ticket I would've been very disappointed
Malignant was awesome! Anyone who says otherwise is no friend of mine. It was exactly what it wanted to be and it delivered. The conflicting tone was the reason it was perfect.
So I found out James Wan wanted to make a giallo movie. They’re Italian horror/murder mystery movies from the 70’s and early 80’s. And anyone who has seen those know they are weird with tons of tonal shifts with weird/weak plots. It’s all about the beautiful shots and atmosphere. You have to turn your brain off and enjoy the ride lol. The original Suspria is a great example of a giallo movie.
Saw this in an empty theater with just my sister and cousin and like had such a good time lol the precinct scene was so amazing, would see it again just for that, but yeah that first "cut out the cancer" i was like... is this gonna suck? And the answer is yes but in a very fun way
When I first started this movie, I fell asleep and found it a bit boring but on my second attempt I loved it. It just gets batshit crazy and I think it's important not to take it too seriously. I absolutely love it. One of my favourites from last year.
Also the camera angles were really cool.
This movie is literally like Invincible, it’s and hilarious. Like your mind doesn’t even know how to process wtf you’re seeing. But also some of the acting falls super flat and comes across as hilarious
I played back the part where she throws the chair randomly at the two detectives in the police station at least 8 times.
Could you imagine this whole movie is just the set up for a video game...
I saw this movie with my pregnant aunt, bad idea
It wasn’t a reboot or sequel, so it’s better than most horror that’s been coming out. I also love how all the characters are silly and real (the protagonist is so mellow dramatic and it makes it so much sillier).
The forensic chick (Ingrid Bisu) is James Wan's wife, which explains some things.
This was all over the place! And the big ol' fight scenes were wild! Fun but all over the place
Lmao yeah that prison kill streak was hillarious and the sound effects just makes it sound cartoonish
The cinematography and choreography were amazing. As a fan of the Leprechaun and Nightmare on Elm St series, this is the kind of horror movie I miss watching
When you started hyping up how crazy it was I decided to watch it before watching this review, and I'm glad I did as I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cinematography was actually really good and it didn't move at a snail's pace like most horror movies which I appreciated most of all. I did absolutely cackle at some parts though, like the prosthetic with it's little baby arms and some of the acting. But I love terrible horror movies, if they're also interesting, which this one definitely was.
Oh boi ain't I early UA-cam notification did work once. Love your work and content Amanda
Them: Gabriel is killing your babies!
Me: naw, pretty sure its the abusive husband…
this movie just seems like averyone involved was having fun
5:32 whenever I see another Amanda upload. In a good way.
I feel stupid cause I didn’t put ANY of this shit together til the reveal.
The underground Seattle tour is genuinely pretty neat. Worth checking out if you're ever in the area.
I watched this movie last night and it took me by surprise honestly with its twist. As far to my knowledge I don’t know any other movie with a twist as similar to it but other than that I enjoyed it because things were so confusing and it kept you hooked as to why things were the way they were.
I did in fact thing it was a little cheesy too and the humor was honestly a little not needed considering the protagonists sister was mainly supposed to be the comic relief.
I live in Lynnwood. The Seattle tour is pretty cool.
A work friend and I just saw this together. It was a backup choice so I went in knowing nothing, other than reviews were apparently sitting at mixed to bad. Didn't even watch the trailer. I loved it. My friend and I had a lot of fun whispering in our seats making observations and going back and forth on what we thought was going on. I think part of the fun of it is that it does give you those pieces for you to figure out, and you get this half-formed idea of what's happening which develops over the course of the movie.
And yeah, I can see why the tonal inconsistency would bother some people; those criticisms are valid. But I just had a lot of fun with it. The campy scenes got me pumped and the serious scenes drew me in; I didn't feel one offsetting the other.
Gabriel is gonna be a DLC character in the next Mortal Kombat game.
Amanda the Jedi would be excellent at Cinemasins 🤣🤣😂
Amanda, I'd recommend watching Basket Case and Argento's Phenomena and I think you'll be able to rewatch Malignant with slightly different eyes. Wan was definitely trying to make an unconventional horror film that wasn't aimed at mainstream audiences. This was Wan going "Okay Warner Bros, I made you a shit ton of money so I want to make whatever film I want and you can't interfere. Just give me a budget and let me do whatever the f*ck I want. And no, you're probably not going to make money back but you OWE me." I absolutely loved this film.
There is an underground Seattle tour and a ghost tour. I'm sure there are a lot more too haha.
Not sure if you’ve watched a lot of 80s New World Pictures/Vestron Video/Key Video films, but thats what this film seemed modeled after. They’re also very inconsistent in their tone. The Stuff, Troll, House, Return to Horror High, etc. These films would often flip from serious to “oh come on! Lol!” Many New Line pictures 80s films also did this.
As soon as we were shown the award, I immediately turned to my husband and told him that someone was going to wind up stabbed by that thing. I’m pretty sure James Wan expected that anyone who grew up watching low-budget 80s horror films would have figured it out as soon as the camera lingered on it for more than five seconds.
Malignant felt like one of those random horror films from Key/Vestron Video we’d take home from the independent video store and have a midnight to 5am popcorn movie sleep-over with our friends. Didn’t matter how bad they were, we KNEW they were going to be bad and that’s why it was so fun.
So once I realized what I was watching, the nostalgia of horror movie sleep-overs swept over me and I enjoyed it because I think he nailed it.
Honestly, it's still the best Dead Twin movie I've seen. There's a whole weird subgenre of them. Infinitely more enjoyable than The Unborn, which I was pretty strongly reminded of. At least it had fewer "teen" underwear shots.
Even if I hadn't inadvertently gotten it spoiled for me, I'm like, 90% sure I'd have figured out the "twist" from the opening credits.
This movie feels like 3 different movies wrapped into one. The beginning, middle and end could all be different genres of horror and the editing is so bad in all of them. I didn’t hate it I was just confused throughout.
im so happy go hear that other people found this movie hilarious. i watched in the theater last night with my best friend and we were just laughing so much. especially with that chair hit scene.
Ok am I really the only one who realized the plot twist mostly because of that very "hidden" cover of Where's my mind? Like srsly when I thought about why is there a song from the Fight club I just freakin knew.
the 3rd act of this movie really had me laughing, other than that this movie was mid for me.
My exact feelings, loved what the intro seemed to be setting up, then it got really standard, then the prison scene hits and I'm completely back on board, then it ended bland
@@AmandaTheJedi yep the prison scene was pretty funny, i was crying of laughter.
Same here, I watched it today and was maniacally laughing the whole third act with how ridiculous it got.
My mom's not really a fan of horror movies, but I told her this one was camp and she agreed.
Communicates through electricity. Ngl that's actually pretty cool.
I feel so validated. I did really enjoy this movie but I left literally saying it's tone was so inconsistent
I haven't watched your whole video but I'm just now realising they never really explained why/how Gabriel could control electricity?
Apparently it's the love child of his wife, which I find neat. This was an absurd ride and I just love it so much. I've heard if you don't like 70s-80s cheese horror you won't like this, and I like camp, so maybe that's what it is.
I like camp and cheese, but I don't like camp and cheese mixed with triggering subject matter treated seriously. 😕
And here I thought I was imagining tonal slop when watching the trailer for this movie. Glad to know it wasn't me
Malignant is a Lifetime movie made horror. It reminded me of having a crazy dream.
With your mention of body horror, I'd love you see you review Brand New Cherry Flavor 🍒❤
I WATCHED THIS MOVIE LAST NIGHT AND WHEN IT WAS OVER MY ONLY THOUGHT WAS "wtf did i just watch and when is amanda coming out with a review"
Btw the underground tour is amazing
It's like this movie tried to be a mashup of The Dark Half (premise) and Evil Dead 2 (tone) and failed miserably at both.
6:56 it’s called a teratoma
Watching Gabriel defund that police department was truly the best part
How is this Madison character not getting horrible sores at the end of each murder spree? It’s her shared body that’s killing people in a video game like manner.
Am I the only one who saw Gabriel fighting and thought of Voldo from Soul Calibur?😆
I saw the trailer of this film and Was interested but now glad I didn't go to the cinema but instead found spoilers.
Amanda, please, Check out the "House Shark!" I think it could rival Velocipastor!
If you didn't know about tours of Seattle's undercity, does that mean you've never seen "The Night Strangler" (US TVM 1973)?
Well that was a hell of a trip 😆
