I think this video just shows how different Cantonese and Mandarin are even though they’re considered Chinese dialects, to a point where you can’t just translate terms word for word. Love how you guys raise awareness of the two dialects in fun and interesting ways. Keep up the good work guys!
Harold Zee I agree with you that there are terms that are very similar, but maybe because I spoke Cantonese growing up and learned Mandarin later on, I’ve always wished I could just translate certain terms directly without having to memorize those that are slightly, or sometimes completely, different (like chocolate is 朱古力 in Cantonese vs 巧克力 in Mandarin). If I had said 朱古力 in Mandarin it wouldn’t have made sense and vise versa. So while there are similarities, there‘s more than just pronunciation that’s different between the two dialects (for example, grammar and sentence structure, but that’s a whole another discussion). I guess that’s the beauty AND inconvenience in the complexity of languages and dialects. 😝
I had a linguistics class that discussion this. Dialect is not the right word to use. They are separate languages and they are mutually unintelligible. From a guess of mine, I think this became from the government who wanted one official language and declared standard Mandarin as the main language and so Mandarin became known as Chinese. Yes Cantonese and mandarin are similar, because they are similar but they are not dialects. It's just a loose term people throw around that's become a norm.
Linguistically Cantonese and Mandarin are in fact different languages, however the issue here had more to do with jyutping. If Mike had been given time to learn the jyutping pronunciation, this would have been much easier (but probably less funny)
they are not different dialects, they are different languages. thats like saying Hindi is a dialect of Punjabi because they are both spoken in India lol.
WE FINALLY GOT MIKE SPEAKING CANTONESE - YOU GUYS BEEN ASKING FOR IT :D LIKE AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU WANNA SEE MORE OF! ALSO TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS TO BE FIRST NEXT TIME WHO WATCHED THIS WHILE TAKING A SHIT?
CantoMando CantoMando #IG squad I still can't guess along even I was watching second and third time. Great challenge! And Edward beats Sheldon as the last to make a closing! XD
Haha I love it how Mike just ignored the tones and just did something random. Just like how gai syun hei all have 3rd tone but he gave them all different tones lmao Good challenge! Not knowing the correct tone makes it hard for tonal languages like Chinese and sometimes he didn't know the consonant (ng..) and vowels (..oe..) which makes this challenge even harder. I don't blame him tho, since they don't have these in Mandarin. Funny how Sheldon knew how to say Peking duck in Mandarin instead of Cantonese. I'd expect the other way around haha and yayyy I learnt some new Cantonese words! ^^
I'm cantonese and I don't even know how to read jyutping. When I want to learn a new cantoword, I need to find the mando word for it, and then put it in one of those canto text to audio things and hope I've heard it before or figure out how to say it.
I almost dead laughing... this is too much.... XD As a native canto speaker, Mike is making me double guessing myself.... maybe I don't really speak canto after all.... You guys have to do this again... It's hilarious!!
These questions are very hard for cantonese speakers. Not only because of the pronunciation, some of the words used are actually mandarin vocab, nobody is using them when speaking in cantonese. For example nobody would ever say "laang5 cong4 soeng1" or "ziu3 soeng2 gei1" in daily conversation.
This is hilarious! Thanks CantonMando for all the great stuff you guys churn out! For the record, I majored in Linguistics in Uni and I found Cantonese Jyutping to be soo cool! Cantonese Jyutping is actually pronounced: Yoot Ping. It was developed by Cantonese Linguists in Hong Kong, who based it off of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Hence when you see J: it's a Y sound and if you see a Z it's a J sound to our English ears and the Y is pronounced as a fronter u: like in 書 syu not su (like the name of your grandma Sue). You could have tried using Yale Cantonese which was developed by white colonials to make Cantonese sound more English… also, Google Cantonese can do both Jyutping and Cantonese Yale, so it's pretty fun to which between the two. I think your mando friend should have used either the Cantonese Yale or learnt a little about the Jyutping sounds before doing this. Also Pleco has a Cantonese Voice enabling feature if you wanna have a standard Cantonese audio that would make it even more hilarious when you play it back. But it's funnier seeing you guys struggle hard, so keep up the good work and keep making awesome videos! Also, you should take a look @ UBC's Cantonese Uni Classes, they are on the leading edge of a lot of Cantonese literature, making Cantonese #lit! 🔥🔥🔥
Mike’s halfass cantonese sounds more like Vietnamese to me hahahah P.S. I live for Sheldon’s laughters. I like how he never wins (though I’ve not exactly reached the end of the video. I knew he’ll not win 😂😂)
i speak canto and i went to chinese school to learn mandarin for 8 years before quitting bc i started taking mandarin in highschool, but i literally couldnt figure out what he was saying lmao
UGH being a fluent canto speaker I could confirm that I cant figure the pyjamas and nightmare either LOOL the pronunciation is so funny hahahahahahahaaaa and also I think fridge in mando is laang cong seong (like leng cang xiang) but its suet guai in canto HAHAAA
Just randomly found this video and this challenge was legit hard. I'm awful when it comes to understanding Mandarin 🙃 You've got yourself a new subscriber tho ✌
LOL! i actually got a few but thanks to the words on the screen, imagine being sheldon and edward at the time... stress!! 😂 and how did you get Camera so quick! 💙
As a guy Born in Hong Kong Just wanna tell you guys some of the Cantonese word are so different compare with mandarine Like Peking duck mandarine 烤鴨 (grill duck) is mention how it cook But Cantonese said it as 填鴨 (stuffed duck) is mention how it raise Anyway this video is so so funny Cheer!!
hello,im actually studying chinese (mandarin) and i watched this video because i randomly saw it on my recommened list , im surprised but i actually learnt a lot from this video and you guys are so funny.
You guys are funny. I don't even know what's going on or why it's funny but you make me laugh. Thanks. Don't worry, I'm sure 100% that my Mandarin is worse then all other yours.
Lol for the fridge, the old saying must've been made up by kids who didn't know things. Cuz in cantonese it sounds like chilly bed cabinet. So kids thought like 'ooh it's cool inside, it's big like a bed, but it can also be opened like a cabinet. Let's call it a chilly bed cabinet' LOL
LOL AT LEAST DO A VID WHERE U TEACH MIKE HOW TO SPEAK CANTO u rly threw him in the deep with the pronouncations LOL LMAO as we get deeper in the video we understand lesser and lesser what Mike could be saying
I'm not sure which pinyin you're using for Cantonese but I use CantoDict. You can Google it. It's just much easier to read even for those who haven't studied Jyutping (Cantonese).
i found this amusing because i can't understand cantonese one bit so half the time i'm like "that sounds like thai or something" and other times i'm going "yeah it does sound similar to mandarin"
WE MADE A PART TWO: ua-cam.com/video/lsmcgHxOdyI/v-deo.html
Sheldon's laugh is literally hilarious 😂😂😂
Lol guys, you have this mc Jin accent XD 好多懶音
I think this video just shows how different Cantonese and Mandarin are even though they’re considered Chinese dialects, to a point where you can’t just translate terms word for word. Love how you guys raise awareness of the two dialects in fun and interesting ways. Keep up the good work guys!
to me it actually shows how similar Mandarin and Cantonese are. I got a few correct just by looking at the Cantonese pinyin
Mackie Lu not just you. I couldn't hear them talking at all :(
Mackie Lu i thought it was a good background music!
the j makes a y sound in jyutping XD
Kasey La Kasey La thank you! That explains the jyutping.... It's pronounced as YUE. It makes sense now.
Gwapo talaga ni edward 😍 😂
i found this amusing because i can't understand cantonese one bit so half the time i'm like "that sounds like thai or something" and other times i'm going "yeah it does sound similar to mandarin"
Oh my god you actually called it “J-yutping” 😂
They deserve so much more likes tho
This is so funny 😂 make my whole day
