FaultyWires Asian kids can never get parents approval for any unstable job. Parents don’t tell you to chase your dreams, they tell you to think logical and don’t be stupid 😂

your mom is an exception then!! For sure not ALL Asian parents crush dreams, but most of them do. They want their kids to be realistic and logical about their career choice.

Came to the US when I was 2; therefore, I am considered a 1.5 generation Asian American. I grew up speaking English and only Vietnamese at home and Cantonese when I visited my dad's side of the family. When I was 24, I decided to learn Mandarin. Even though I wasn't born in the US, I was raised and influenced by the American culture and mainly speak English; however, I have decided that no matter what, my children (ALL of them) will know how to speak both the Vietnamese and Chinese language. I want them to know their heritage, their culture and their language...so that they never forget where they really came from.

I've seen comments and mixed reviews here. I'm ABC, fluent in both Chinese and English and needless to say I'm proud of my bilingual background. For those pointing their fingers at these poor children how their "lack of Chinese skills" equate to "lack of Chinese pride", please don't EVER do that. Don't EVER blame them for their background and the environment they grew up in. Chinese people growing up overseas will always use their country of birth's language on a daily basis, so OF COURSE they don't speak Chinese as much. So why is this "surprising" or "tragic"? I think the most tragic is how you guys can be very judgmental when they don't know them and their backgrounds very well! That is very ignorant and narrow-minded. Perhaps you guys should try living in a foreign country outside of China and interact with overseas Chinese and non-Chinese people more. That way it will broaden your minds and perspectives on lives that are completely different than yours. Also, it is wonderful to interact with people outside of your race! If this world only consists of one race and one language, the world will be a very boring place to live in. HELLO??!! DIVERSITY!!!!

+Tiffany Chin THANK YOU for saying this! From personal experience and accounts from ABC friends, getting severely criticized and shamed for not being fluent like a native-speaker just alienates us and makes us feel a strong sense of resentment. When I visited Chinatown LA for the first time in 11 years, the locals shook their heads when I just communicated in English. I would try to speak Mandarin to them because I thought that would make me more liked, but I still got disapproving looks. One of the vendors even yelled at me, saying that my Chinese sucks. The bilingual ones accused me of being ashamed of my Chinese identity.

I love ur repsonse to this because it relates to my situation so much! Im not Chinese but I am from a South Pacific background but grew up in Australia. I use to speak my language when I was small but I stopped as time went by simply because of my surroundings and the environment I grew up in. My parents speak the languge to me and I understand 100% but I dont speak it simply because I dont feel fluent enough to speak it and it makes me uncomfortable because my pronounciation is off. Like I'd love to be fluent in my language and Im ashamed that Im not. However that doesnt mean that I'm ashamed of my background because I absolutely love my culture!! The native speakers say I'm plastic just because im from overseas and I cant speak my own language. It's really sad. I will try my best to learn my language though.

I get the feeling that English is an easy language to learn for Chinese people. Not that English is hard by the standards of global languages but these parents are so more fluent than I'd think it would be for those foreign to English. Very wholesome content, and now I think I'll have to try harder to learn Mandarin. I tried learning it on my own years ago but stopped after learning the pronunciations and some basic words and phrases. Such a beautiful language. Subscribed for more awesomeness. :D

A friend of mine at work, who is an astonishingly wonderful guy, grew up in Hong Kong. He now lives in Canada ( alongside me ) and told me that in an effort to integrate properly to the society, he has only let his kids speak english since they could talk. It breaks my heart to know that a parent cannot speak to their child in their native language. I love when people try to integrate as best they can, but for everybody out their, learning your cultural language can be a wonderful experience. Don't let the ancestry die :)
