Today, Mike is going to try and learn Chinese Cantonese in 5 days in order to try speaking Cantonese with his girlfriend's family. Cantonese vs Mandarin!
Mike is a Mandarin speaker who has learned Mandarin from a young age. His girlfriend's family speaks Cantonese which is spoken in Hong Kong (香港), Macau (澳門), Guangzhou (廣州) and more.
He'll be starting from the beginning and will be doing learn chinese for beginner courses and learn chinese for kids courses. The goal is for him to learn chinese conversationally so he can speak to his girlfriend's grandma in Cantonese.

DISCLAIMER: He speaks Chinese. But the Mandarin Chinese. So it is easier for him to learn Cantonese.
Actually, it is easier the other way around. Cantonese have more tones
Actually speaking mandarin makes it harder coz you keep going to the mandarin pronunciations

That method works for me personally. I grew up speaking Cantonese and learning Mandarin in school. Like all languages you just need to find the equivalent exchange and learn the grammar.
Cus that's how most ABCs do it sometimes though hahahahahha But there are some common phrases where the grammar is totally not the same.

@@squarebobspongepants3630 not really I've been learning mandarin for many years and people act like they have no idea what I'm saying but then they will repeat exactly what I said with just a slight change in tone and suddenly its it's understandable. Gets me so frustrated that I dont want to try and speak to people anymore

@@superclonge8429 I visit nyc Chinatown constantly and my best friend is from china, the only way to get more immersed is to move to china which I cannot do
@@ChocolateEyedGirl87 That explains it. I do not think Chinatown is the best option haha. I think if you move to China, you can get rid of your frustration and be very fluent, especially if you move to places like Beijing, Harbin or Chengde where the Mandarin pronunciation is very good. There are a lot of Chinese people who speak Mandarin with strong and various accents so watch out for those. There are also many native Chinese people who don't speak mandarin all too well. I'm learning Japanese now but I'm going to learn Chinese Mandarin next. Don't be so discouraged! Best wishes

Mike’s Cantonese honestly blew me away. I was legitimately surprised at how good his pronunciation was and how he somehow changed his vocab from standard Mandarin Chinese words like 没有 and 不 to their Cantonese equivalent in just 5 days. The bit with grandma cracked me up hard 😂 also, tiff’s a savage
As a fluent Cantonese speaker myself, I seriously can't help but laugh. I agree with Tiff's grandma, your Cantonese was alright... 50/50. Just keep practicing, and you'll get it!!! Also, on the bright side, at least you did learn it pretty fast and the majority of the words you said were correct/ accurate.
