How Damage works in Diablo IV

- Damage mechanics in Diablo IV are a bit more complex than they appear at first glance and certain mechanics are stronger than others. In this video I explain how it appears the different multiplier are working together for now as a lead into a video about Barbarian key passives.

where is emotional damage? :D
That only affects enemies dmg not your dmg, it hurts to see all your friends die
this only comes into play in world tier 5

Your videos are always so infomative and simple to follow along. Easily my fave D4 Content Creator! Thanks for the video
What I'm struggling to find info on is what skills and stats effect minions for necro. Like, would a skill that gives you % increased damage vs close enemies effect minion damage (perhaps by a smaller degree)? It's hard to plan a minion build without knowing exactly what passive skills will actually boost minion damage.
Hey Don, I need some help with understanding one of Necro's skills. Can you answer this for me? I can't find the answer anywhere.
So necro has a passive called "gloom". "enemies take x% increased shadow damage when you deal damage with a darkness skill". That's the exact description. I had a really cool shadow damage build theory crafted centered around the darkness corpse explosion, but after unlocking gloom it doesn't seem to proc? I also tried with blight and reap and it wouldn't proc either... Funny enough though the "reaper's pursuit" (gain movement speed after causing damage with a darkness skill) will proc. So is this a bug specifically for gloom? Or is there something I'm missing like DOT damage doesn't count?? I also have no idea if the shadowblight key passive skill is proccing either because it doesn't give you any indication (maybe it does and I'm not proccing it...). Hope you can help :)
my brain isn't big enough to comprehend this video
Very useful info, thanks! Do you have an idea of where in these buckets "mastery skills gain %dmg" would fall? For example, the damage bonus from the sorc glyph "Adept".
probably WITH bucket
Will you be doing a breakdown of the different glyphs as well (for barb), and which damage bucket they fall into? If this is even known at this point.
The wording on the glyphs are quite ambiguos to me. But most of them seem to be additive and not multiplicative, which seems kind of weak to be honest.
The ones for berserking and vulnerable seem quite strong, IF they add to the damage multiplier of berserking/vulnerable damage. If they act additively toward some other bucket not so much.
I’m having a hard time prioritizing glyphs in my theory crafting because of this uncertainty, and therefore also which boards to use.
Thanks for the great vids!
yeah im not even doing much endgame glpyh theory til we know how common they are, i assume they are gonna be rare and hard to level at first
Thanks very helpful. Cheers man! (i'm pretty smooth brained, I'll be rewatched your videos often LOL)
one of few that show you how to fish instead of giving you fish. Thanks for the guide !!
Subscribed to Don cause of this. Guys is really informative
Please help! If I hit someone and it applies vulnerability. Does that hit also get the vulnerability amp or is it only the hits after they are already vulnerable.
Thanks for info. One question for you. Your last example with sorc and barb. Sorc does “increased damage” and barb example did “more damage”. Are those the same or multiplied differently like path of exiles more and increased damage differences. Thanks!!
The way you know in D4 is always by the x or the +. Every increase will have one or the other, and x% is always a "more" multiplier from POE, while +% is always an "increased" from POE.
So the sorc skill is a multiplicative "more" type in POE language, even though it says increased, because of the x%. This is much clearer for new players than the rather bizarre more/increased language POE uses.
@@RockSaysPaperOP that would make things nice! Thanks
Don, can you add a spreadsheet to your current ones linked in your info with all item bases inherent affixes?
thats on the 'videos to make soon' list
Can someone explain why it feels like damage is falling off and all my drops are -200 armors and -300/-600 weapons? It’s been like this for about 5-6 in game hours, every time I login it feels weak I get bored in 30 minutes. Maybe if my drops were good I’d want to keep playing
You are a smart guy. Thks for the useful videos
Wait a second... So youre saying that "all damage" causes all damage types to separately increase their bonuses prior to the damage calculation? That would easily make "all damage" the best source for damage.
Thank you!
Can someone explain to me What the differensen is between close and nearby mobs? Would apporterar it :)
the game says melee vs not but i think there is some grey area
that makes sense,
I'm new to Diablo. What I'm confused by is, the weapons have a damage like for example dmg: 190, and 100 dmg per second.
But when I actually hit the enemy, the number markers that pop up in game are like 30-40.
theres a LOT of math going on including your damage multipliers and enemies also resist damage don't worry about the exact #s too much
@@DonTheCrown ohhhh, okay. Thank you!
Thanks. Great video, but after seeing multiple similar ones I am still a little confused.
Would be awesome with a video where you list multiple (if possible) concrete examples (gear, skill tree, paragon nodes, paragon glyphs) for each class to add to each of their "buckets".
For example: what are the possibilities for sorcs to add "dmg WITH" ?
Shame that Blizzard aren't able to make this stuff SUPER obvious using colors etc in their tooltips. I'm a nerd, so Ill figure it out eventually watching stuff like this. But I want all the casuals to understand it too, without having to youtube stuff. So they dont feel underpowered... so they have a great time and keep playing... which in turn will make a profit for blizzard... which in turn will give ME more D4 content.
...its like Blizzard has made this great game, but the dept. in charge of visualizing the whole thing has ZERO clue of whats going on, so they are just guessing.
Casual here. Yeap, colors would help A LOT on visualizing different bucket dmgs.
That covered PoE reference made me laugh 😁
Spread my build accross most buckets. Hope it pays off 🤞
How long until someone makes a spreadsheet where I can enter all these stats and see my damage range?
heard a few ppl rumbling about making a dps calculator, im sure its coming
I really want one for minion damage, had someone tell me that close/long/physical/non physical don’t help minions and that’s a terrible loss of true because that’s half the modifiers I’d have thought would work that I have access to.
"Damage vs". has some multiplicative values as well, at least one legendary gives x% damage to stunned, which is then multiplicative to +% stunned, but additive to +%CCed/Bleeding/etc.
Same with x% with Core skills which is multiplicative to +% with Core skills, but additive to +%with Phys/Sword/etc. (Considering the Para Board and Glyphs give lots of +Phys and other "with" buckets, the Barbarian Unbridled Rage x135% Core suddenly seems a lot more tame ;)
Same goes with Aspects Limitless Rage or Expectant. Except if they are their only bucket because of "next skill cast". We will see.
Thanks Don, hopefully will someone join my clan, so I can share your videos to more people 😂
Why would you argue 10% of a million is just 1,000,010 instead of 1,100,000? I wonder if you are misunderstanding it or if the % increases are wrong. I think the buckets are additive within, so 3 adders for +10% within a bucket would be (DMGx1.3) where as 3 different buckets would be (((DMGx1.1)x1.1)x1.1). The second is cumulative in that is is also multiplying increases from previous increases and not just the base.
my example is additive, if it was a x10% that would be HUGE, otherwise no +10% bad
@@DonTheCrown I think they mean its additive in that 3 +10% multipliers is x1.3. so assume 100 damage, 1.3 is 130. But if you have 3 buckets, 100x1.1=110. 110x1.1=121. 121x1.1=133. So across buckets is better, but you its still a percentage increase for both across and within? If it was just 10 damage, why as 10% and not +10 damage. There are instances in the paragon tree for instance that add a flat +100 armor for druids.
If I am wrong, then the way it is worded as x% increase
is confusing and not straight forward.
I cant accept the fact i level up my necromancer to lvl 47 with legendary weapons and such, all maxed out, and my basic damage skill does 124 per hit. Its insane….were is my beloved blood syphon from diablo 3
I hope dmg is balanced on release... Only two classes were able to almost oneshot WT5 bosses, bone spear necro and DB baba.
Crit+OP dmg (orange number over 1.2B), annoying in Avarice cuz its better to stun him for 2/3 globlin spawn...
DB? double swing?

Thought you turned into Hodor there for a minute
HOTA HOTA HOTA HOTA HOTA HOTA
So let’s i do 100 dmg.
I have buff myself and give myself 80% all dmg.
Now i do 180dmg.
Now let’s say I slow a monster and I have 30%vs slowed enemy.
Now do I do 180*30%=54.
Now I do 180+54= 234dmg?
yup, each bucket multiplies across the whole but generally adds within itself
@@DonTheCrown i know you did a video about multiplicative buckets vs additive.. but i’m still confused. So in the keystone passive for extending berserk and berserk status itself.. that is additive damage. But the arsenal swapping keystone passive is multiplicative ? I confused with the wording..
Those semi-rap explanations (hota-hota-hota vs. hota-gen-gen-hota) really speak to me, more of them please! Thanks for the info.
shoulda caught the copy pasta rap in chat last night xD
Didn't mention CD reduction
On today's episode of "content creator finds another user's spreadsheet and misinterprets it without consulting people who made said spreadsheet"
This was a speedrun in misunderstanding damage buckets
It's even worse than that. Don is reacting to Goblin Inc.'s youtube video about buckets. And Goblin Inc. is making video based on a spreadsheet that's not 100% accurate and contains some "guesswork". But Goblin doesn't know that, and he's promoting it as "pure facts". It's really sad how those youtubers have no shame. And youtube audience mostly believes anything they see without testing it themselves.
Where are the buckets. I see no buckets. I want to see the buckets.

Not showering for a week before launch causes your All Damage bucket to increase x30.
Start now, before it's too late.
whys mine at x300?
I still want a gem tab lol
DITTO
I wouldnt really consider resource gen and atk speed as a "dmg bucket" because its not increasing your dmg but it is increasing your dps, when a bucket is just a multiplier to your dmg
If were refering dps we talk about the whole rotation of skills and how long it takes you to complete the rotation not just resource gen and atk speed
Then you gotta factor in lucky hit procs because that part of your rotation and dps which is just a whole lot of maths
I agree. You wouldn't put either in any dmg equations
yeah this is why I wanted to make my own video about it, because while its not a bucket for increasing damage directly hit per hit, it does increase overall DPS. Like if you were walking around with max fury all day you could do some different stuff otherwise. Also a lot of people seem to be ignoring resources in general.
@DonTheCrown by the way, were these buckets verified during the beta, or are we speculating?
Much of that is confirmed yet....
