    I heard the good doctor just fine. Recently I was referred to a nephrologist as my blood creatinine level was 1.51 for consecutive physicals. My eGFR was 47. This caused me to learn more about the kidneys than I ever wanted to before. It is a far from perfect marker for kidney function. Also the clinic that I went to makes a height assumption for all eGFR calculations. I am taller than the assumed value. Since your height is squared in the calculation, it underestimates your GFR if you are taller. When using my actual height, the calculated e GFR is 67. Creatinine levels are dependent on your muscle mass, physical activity and diet. When a 24 hour urine collection creatinine clearance test was done, my measured GFR was 97. I have just begun to take creatine, and hope to see if it makes me stronger in the gym. If you are weightlifter, larger, with good muscle mass, be suspicious if a doctor tells you that you have CKD when your creatinine levels are mildly elevated.

    • @doctorowen
      @doctorowen  Рік тому +1

      Good stuff. Wider rollout of this will surely help prevent further confusion/conflation re creatine and the kidneys. Probably just the cost of changing over lab equipment holding back this less fallible way of estimating renal function from wide-scale adoption.

    • @zedzane5195
      @zedzane5195 Рік тому +4

      @@doctorowen Agreed. Just had my labs done and creatinine was 1.51 which put my eGFR at 50 indicating renal disease. In the same lab, I had cystatin-c measured and it was 74 which set my eGFR at 102, completely normal. I take 5 gm of creatine a day and have a fair amount of contractile tissue so this lab has become invaluable in following my renal function. I just found your channel and will continue to follow you. Good content and good presentation.

    It would be useful to explain the consequences of taking creatine on the creatinine levels in more detail such as explaining how much higher than normal the level would be so that someone who gets a recall to see their doctor after a blood test can explain why the levels are high and what other tests could be done to test kidney function instead.

    I have had a full medical just recently, I had an amber report on kidney function because I have a higher than normal creatinine level, I supplement 5 grams a day for health, I am now assuming that Creatine supplementation is the cause of rye reading but I shouldn’t worry about it as it’s expected I’d have a higher creatinine level due to supplementation is that right?

    Today our trainer suggested taking creatine at recommended levels for a month then taking a week off…then repeating that cycle. Both of us have normal kidney function as far as we know…should my wife and I adopt this schedule? I’m afraid that we will lose the benefits of taking creatine in the first place by taking a full week off every month or so. Thanks!

    I know this is a year old but I guess I’m a genetic abnormality because every time I’ve taken creatine for more than six months it’s guaranteed within 12 months after that I’m going to get a kidney stone. I drink a lot of water to make sure my kidneys are flushed and I eat very healthy and I’m very consistent about my diet.
    Is that empirical evidence that creating causes kidney stones? of course not but we have to be very careful about saying that there isn’t side effects to Creatine with some people.

      Quite right. In my effort to avoid saying something overly jargon-filled like, "Serum creatinine levels are used in both the most commonly used estimators of kidney function, the Cockcroft-Gault equation and CKD-EPI equation for GFR", I've created a slight, unneccassary ambiguity. Thanks for clearing it up!
