Thanks so much! I kinda sorta felt like that. 😂 So glad I kept going though. I have a nice drawing on my Instagram page as a reel. It’s a bee I made with a family member. We ended up loving it so much. If you want to see the drawing, my handle on Insta is @bliss_homeandgarden
My goodness, Thank you. I'm in the process and I felt like something was wrong. With each roll I was taking off the paint. I was doing coats back-to-back instead of waiting. But now I see it requires a lot of work. Thanks again Great video!
Thank you for posting this. I've this second done a small square on my door and I'm only one coat in and already thinking what the hell! Your video made me feel better. Your board looks amazing!
I can’t believe I just saw this! thanks so much. I’ve made two designs since, a giant bee and some lemons. I’ll post a video about that in about a week or so. The blackboard is still working out perfectly. Have an awesome day!
Also, this looks super duper therapeutic and FUN! Y'all did a FANTASTIC job on this project. As a former supervisor in the paint dept for the Home Depot, your technique was spot on perfection, 5 to 7 coats is sufficient for Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint. You've inspired me to start a similar project not only in my nieces' bedroom, but also in my twin sister's kitchen as well. So HEY, thanks again. Consider me subscribed!
Perhaps it would be beneficial to paint the area with regular black or darker paint before the chalk paint if you have light colored walls, so you don’t have to potentially paint so many layers on?
The can is correct. It just paints thin. You’ll notice it’ looks “oily” when you apply it. The product goes a long way though. I didn’t use my entire quart. I have plenty left if I want to touch it up. But I haven’t needed to do that yet. Have fun!
Great video. I've been thinking of doing this. What kind of saw is that? I'm so new to doing DIY stuff and I need to get a saw but am not sure what to start with.
Have you tried using chalk board markers on the surface? I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to use them with the rustoleum brands but I haven’t seen anyone using them on theirs yet. 😖
Sheesh! I wanted to do my son’s nursery with a chalkboard accent wall…but not so sure I’ll get the results I hoped for. I’m grateful to you for making this video. You did a great job!!
Thanks so much! Everyone loves the board. It’s fun too, but remember the key is the more coats the better. It was a little scary and a tad messy, but in the end it’s still just paint. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Question… did you change your tape in between coats or kept the same tape on? Because I know when you paint with regular tape if you wait until it’s fully dry it can chip the paint
first get a bigger roller and wet the brush so its moist before dipping into chalk paint its ok to go back on the first coat or any coat to apply in light spots
Thank you. This is an oil based paint though, does oil and water mix well together??? It doesn’t feel like normal acrylic paint at all. I’ve had it for a couple of years and made lots of cool drawings on it. I haven’t had to repaint since which is very exciting … but I wonder if I will need to do so a few more years down the line
I LOVED THIS VIDEOOOOO! So much value 🖤🖤🖤 Thanks for sharing, Cynthia! About to start my first blackboard wall project, almost same size as this one! Very helpful video 🫶
I confess I came here to see what size lumber you used for the frame and I haven't started the paining yet so take that into consideration with what advice I have. I was worried about using a roller as most of my work is wipe on or regular brushes and airbrushes so I called my cousin who custom paints everything from walls and cabinets as well as chain stores all over the Canadian east coast. He said the taping and cutting in us the hardest part but where this in nowhere near a corner, ceiling, or lightswitch no cutting in needed lol. First fir a painted or primed wall do it just the way you have tape it up and give it a scuff or with a bare wall or if using a removable chalkboard cut out do any sanding and knot/ blemish filling now and seal the plywood then another quick scuff sand just get rid of the "orange peel" if it feels bumpy but this shouldn't happen it should be smooth. Now with the rollerload it up good you will want to apply lots put to much so it sags or runs then he usually does a big Z sorta stroke to evenly apply the extra where you need at (he also said for a whole wall he would roughly divide in 3 sections doing one at a time so in effect you'll make 3 Zeds across the wall by the time you're done). Now go back to one side and pait up and down in a very slight curve and move right to left ( or vise versa if you are right handed 😂). You don't need a lot of pressure here and after the first swipe near the tape put this pressure more on the side of the roller where the handle attaches (also should have mentioned the handle side needs to be facing the way you are painting. He assures me 4 isn't needed but hey a pro so I might cut that time back a little but not much besides I got other projects, housework, a wife and 5 young "adult" children to keep me busy for several 4 hour coats ha ha. Also again no sanding is needed unless you have stopped long enough for it to cure. He suggested 2-3 coats +1 when using chalk paint and the rest from cuing to installing the border and conditioning goes exactly how you've done it. He suggests the wall paint was too glossy for a base layer but also you weren't using enough paint and were way too erratic with your roller direction causing very thin almost see through areas as well as lines galore. Most of this can be fixed just as you have with extra coats but by doing it the suggested way could save you just on this project enough to make 2 chalkboards for the price of one. pS very beautiful if turned out nice AND you told me what dimensions your border is and it looks perfect so thanks for the great video.....most videos I've seen don't focus in that all
I made a chalkboard wall And watch the video. It turned out great until I put chalk on board. Both directions like he said, when I erased the chop off.I had scratches all on the chat board.. I wiped it completely off when it wiped it off and did another coat of Chalkboard paint And I smoothed off the sharp edges on each side of the chalk. But I'm so scared to do it again.Do you have any suggestions?
The very first time I did it, it did leave a small residue behind. I can still see some traces of the first drawing I ever made. I think the first time you cure it is the most important. It gets easier and easier to work with over time. Also, every time I make a new drawing it covers any old residue and it looks fine, no one notices. I’ve done over 15 drawings by now and it still works and looks beautiful. I have not repainted it since the first time. Maybe it’s time to try again, make sure it’s well cured and the first time you draw don’t push too hard. You’ll feel comfortable with how it erases soon enough. Good luck!
This is an excellent question! I discovered that there IS black chalk. I haven't tried it, but you've inspired a new video. Very smart. I can't recommend just yet, but here's what I found on amazon: amzn.to/3lxjVde These are larger onyx colored sidewalk chalk. I will also be researching another product to clean the "ghosting" that sometimes occurs. Sometimes when you erase (even if you wet it again), you'll notice a very faint residue of what's been drawn before.
I don't know. I suppose it would give you a better base, but i think you'd still need several coats. I've had my board for almost a year now and I believe it is now at this point that I might need to either add another paint layer or find products that eliminate the "ghosting" left from previous artwork. I've drawn about 6 designs since this video.
Yes you sure can and my family gifted me some for Christmas. My daughter says they are great for lettering but I love good old school chalk for the more artistic drawings. I’ve made at least 1/2 dozen designs since the making of this video and that chalkboard is holding up awesome!
You’ve definitely painted a gajillion things at least! This is huge!! A labor of love for sure. Love it so much! How often do you plan on changing out the art work?
This is the 3rd time I change it and I’m getting ready to do my 4th design for fall. The dust only happens when I change my design. If you plan on using it daily, yes, you will have chalk dust to worry about. If you use it seasonally like me, you’ll deal with that less often. I just keep a vacuum handy when I re-design. Other than that, I love it and will put up with dust for a couple of days. Hope that helps.
If you don't cure it, it will start leaving marks on the board when you erase it. It's called ghosting. However, I'm getting ready to test a couple of other products that promise to solve that problem as well.
I only purchased one can and I didn't use it all. Quite inexpensive after all. I'm about to post another video showing some designs I've made. You'll also see how it erases after multiple uses. I am happy with it. I suspect over time, I might need to give it another coat and I will update... so far though, it's worked out well with the initial coats of paint.
Very informative video, thank you. As someone who's hand writing is absolutely dreadful I can appreciate how pretty yours is. Very nice. So just to be clear, anytime you wet the chalkboard you have to cure it regardless of how long the its been on the wall?
Thank you! Yes, I've wet it several times and cured it each time after. This helps to make sure you don't get "ghosting" meaning that you can still see what you had drawn after it's been erased.
HUNDREDTH COMMENT! I bought my paint before I decided to do research. 😂 Great video! What kind of roller did you use and have you ever tried using chalk markers on it? ❤
I go to a restaurant that has chalkboards and the owner told me they have to repaint often bc they use chalk markers. I suggest you test them on a corner or something. I like the versatility of regular chalk. I used the rollers for doors and cabinets to apply paint, that's why it was small. Another person commented I might have done better with a regular roller and applied it similar to painting a wall. I have to tell you that we have had a blast. Right now we are doing a Christmas theme with a barn and a truck. I'll post it soon on my instagram page. You'll have so much fun! Go for it!
Well if you had actually placed a bet you would have lost 😉. I have loved my blackboard so much. 🤣 I ended up loving it and use it so much. Everyone who comes over loves it. It ended up being worth it for me but might not be worth it for everyone. Have a lovely weekend!
This video was so helpful. I’m going to hopefully do a chalkboard wall in my living room (going to do an art design on it and then seal it) and this was so helpful . Thank you Ps: Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous!!
MMmmman this deserves so much more views. I wouldve just given up after that first coat and bawl my eyes out. Lovely lovely lovely

I wanted to share my DIY chalkboard experience as I wish someone had explained it to me when using this rustoleum paint.
I will try to paint this board on my room 😍thanks for super idea's ❤❤
Did you end up adding a chalkboard in your room?
@@homeandlifewithcynthia yes❤
Beautiful job! Thanks for sharing the tips you learned along the way!
Thank you for posting this. I've this second done a small square on my door and I'm only one coat in and already thinking what the hell!
Your video made me feel better.
Your board looks amazing!
Thank you! Yeah, I totally know the feeling. Glad the video was helpful and I hope your door turns out awesome!
U did an excellent job. The look on your face when U thought it wasn’t right. U made me scared 2 try. It’s really beautiful.
Don’t be scared though. We’ve had a blast with this board! Do it. You will love it
Oh my gosh! TY so much for this tutorial Cynthia.
My project starts this week. I know I’d never get through it without your advise!
So lovely to hear that feedback. I hope it turns out better than you expect.
Thank you for sharing your experience 🤗
Thank you for this I needed to see someone useing it. Very good job on the video and the editing was also very good. Kepp it up!
I can’t believe I just saw this! thanks so much. I’ve made two designs since, a giant bee and some lemons. I’ll post a video about that in about a week or so. The blackboard is still working out perfectly. Have an awesome day!
Yours looks great. We're about to attempt ours this weekend. We wanted to check out your tips before we got started. Thanks.
your house has some beautiful spaces, Cynthia. you're very talented. needed these tips badly. thanks!
Thank you so much for this lovely message!
I’m so glad I found your video. I’m currently in the middle of painting a wall with chalk paint and your video is going to help so much.
So glad it’s helpful. Best to you with your wall!
Your home's open layout is perfect! Great job, I'm gonna do this for my nieces' bedroom! Thanks for sharing Cynthia!

Thank you for this and you seem like quite the chalk artist !
Hehehe. Thx
About to tackle my first chalk wall....thanks for sharing your experience! This will help me manage my expextations 😂
Thank you for the video and honesty on the process.
Definitely use outside sidewalk chalk. It's very soft
Your husband’s cousin was smiling he was so proud of you. 😊
Really great video! Very informative. Thank you for sharing! Have a blessed New Year!
Thank you. Same to you! Many blessings to you for the new year!
I subscribed when you wrote it on the wall… lol too cute and it looks amazing
Awww. Thank you! We are loving it so far!
This was so informative and helpful!
I’m so glad to hear that! ☺️
How much paint did u use?
I have a quart that says 120-150 sq ft.
I guess if u need 5-7 coats u divide project by that?
Must take a lot of paint

Can you paint a vinyl sign with chalkboard paint? Will it still be easy to write on?
Thanks so much ! I was also getting freaked out after first 2 coats
Awesome job!

very cool channel, i suspect this will make my wife very happy ty :)

what is the color of your interior, I like it🙋🏽♀️and is it flat, semi
It’s called pearly white by Sherwin Williams. It’s eggshell
Question… did you change your tape in between coats or kept the same tape on? Because I know when you paint with regular tape if you wait until it’s fully dry it can chip the paint
I kept the same
The streaks where there because of your painting skills
There’s always room for improvement 😍. Thx

Lovely cheers from Pennsylvania Blessings 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you! I have family in Pittsburgh and go there around once per year ☺️Cheers to you too!
It always takes more coats on plaster and painted wall. Normally, it takes 2-3 coats less on untreated wood ;)
Makes sense. Thx!!
I did like 4 coats and did a little sanding then two more coats. It's no joke
I LOVED THIS VIDEOOOOO! So much value 🖤🖤🖤 Thanks for sharing, Cynthia! About to start my first blackboard wall project, almost same size as this one! Very helpful video 🫶

So I wonder can we use it in our nursery for constant writing and erasing for the kids? I wonder!
Did you end up trying this? The only thought is that it gets dusty - but it is hours of fun!
You’ve definitely painted a gajillion things at least! This is huge!! A labor of love for sure. Love it so much! How often do you plan on changing out the art work?
Hehehe 🙊. I’ve been daydreaming about all the possibilities. I’m kinda thinking once per month? What do you think?
Does it smell strong when painting? I want to do my kitchen/bedroom door but I'm afraid the smell might bother my toddler.
I think paint always smells. It doesn’t smell any more than most paints but I would be careful with a toddler and ventilate as much as possible
Looks great. The only concern I have is the dust. After having used it for a while, has that become an issue in your kitchen area?

uh yeah im putting this in my gym lol

The paint I used was 100 times easier two coats and done. But not shiny finish matte black.
What paint was that? I would love to know and also how it holds up in comparison. Thanks in advance!

I could smell the chalk dust when she was cleaning!
Yep! 😂
