CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Uncle Bob (Barry Corbin) provides some wisdom to Bob (John Travolta) about pride, forgiveness, and love. Later, there is an explosion at the plant.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"You a real cowboy?" John Travolta traded disco for a mechanical bull in this adaptation by James Bridges and Aaron Latham of Latham's article on Western nightlife. Texas country boy Bud (Travolta) moves to Houston to work on an oil rig with his Uncle Bob (Barry Corbin), and he swiftly becomes indoctrinated in the nighttime rituals of drinking, dancing, and showing off cowboy duds at Gilley's, the enormous local honkytonk. There he meets and marries the sassy Sissy (Debra Winger), but the honeymoon quickly ends when Sissy starts spending too much time learning the men-only skill of mechanical bull-riding from ex-con Wes (Scott Glenn); Bud throws her out and hooks up with slumming Pam (Madolyn Smith). Under the paternal tutelage of Uncle Bob, Bud then learns not only how to master the bull but also what it takes to be a real man rather than just an ersatz cowboy. With a story, cast, and setting that were essentially Saturday Night Fever country-style, Urban Cowboy was poised to be a summer 1980 hit. Although its box office did not live up to Fever's legacy, Urban Cowboy did spawn a soundtrack album of country-and-western hits and helped spur a Western fashion vogue; people from all regions began sporting cowboy boots, and mechanical bulls started replacing passé disco floors. The first of Travolta's many comebacks, Urban Cowboy provided the star with a more "manly" image after his Moment by Moment (1978) fiasco, but it was neophyte co-star Winger who got even better notices. With its Western milieu and retro view of relationships, Urban Cowboy stands as a sign of the nascent Reagan era, as '70s icon Travolta learned bull-riding himself and replaced his white polyester with a black Stetson.

Uncle Bob was a friend, father figure, and also a voice of reason, wisdom, and experience to Bud. People like Uncle Bob are few and far between and they are the kind of people that you always want in your corner because they tell it like it is and won't ever lie to you nor let you down. He's right on about pride.
There isn't one thing to dislike in uncle bob. He is the only person to go to when you are looking for an answer.
Yes he was loved uncle Bob and aunt Corinne
Very sad Uncle Bob died, but I love that the last conversation he and Bud had was a meaningful one.
I love the actor
Wait, he died? The clip doesn’t show that! 😩
@@Racer997 I think he got struck by lightning
He didn't get struck by lightning the lightning hit the tank and then the explosion and heat killed him@@stevemtc1
Uncle Bob's the voice of reason. He's been there, and come back stronger.

Uncle Bob played by actor Barry Corbin was only 39 years old during this scene ( according to Wikipedia he was born in October 1940 and the movie was released June of 1980. Uncle Bob had the life wisdom of someone much older than 39 and he also looked older than 39.
They fixed him up to look older
He looked appropriate when he played Sheriff Washburn in Dallas not much later.
Hot damn then in 83 he went and played a 4 star general in Wargames. That’s quite impressive for a 43 yr old
He was also in Solo with Mario Van Peebles

Uncle Bob was a good guy, sad when he died
Yeah but I’ve searched the guy who played him and he’s still alive.

My dad actually works for this exact refinery that was used for the filming of this movie. It was called Traweek Dock and my Dad nicknamed it the Travolta Dock in honor of the film LOL. They rebuilt it and renamed it Dock No. 1. Seeing this scene as a kid and even now, scares me a bit because I know these are one of the many weather conditions my dad has to work in.
Ruben Velasquez Valero manchester
Valero Houston
I knew before they even asked Bud to shave his beard that he would have to because my hubby retired from a refinery.
You're not supposed to gauge tanks during thunderstorms, huge safety rule nowadays. All workers and contractors are to leave the worksite during a storm now
@@SparkZ1420yup doesn’t matter if it’s a weather phase 1.2 or 3 no worker is supposed to be working. I do scaffolding here in TX so I was surprised they didn’t do this back then but then again it’s a movie
Uncle Bob's look at Bud is..."Oh yeah. I've been there."
Yes. That look he gave Bud, followed by his speech, was priceless. Wisdom and authority mixed well together. I hated that uncle bob died, it is a scene guys like us appreciate, an authority figure telling us what we ignore.
Damn well put.
1:21 - Dipping a lip of chaw, "Yessir!"
Swaller?? Lol. Love this movie!! Watch it ALL the time!!
John Travolta is such a natural actor. And he says so much with his eyes and subtle movements.
I've had to 'swaller' mine a couple times over the years... can't say it was easy, but it turned out to be more than worth it in the long run...!!
*Cheers*
Damn, he didn’t need to die in this movie lol
Berry Corbin was great in this movie.
+Draven A few others too. Great character actor.
Draven Barry Corbin should've been more popular. He is an awesome character actor. He has an awesome accent! Loved him in Lonesome Dove!!
Is he still with us?? (Amongst the living)??
Getrealpeeps yes!, he plays in The Ranch with Ashton Kuthcher
Yes i agree
Pile a dogshit in the cantaloupe patch....lol...God I love that line...and so true...us guys and our fuckin pride....
And drawin flies, lol!!!
Goddam Bob......
Hate that Uncle Bob died, but love this conversation/speech
"Family car is waiting"
My dad was an operator on that unit when they filmed this. Its at the Rohm & Haas plant in Deer Park, Texas. I think it's been sold off to somebody else now.
Uncle Bob 💔
I was 12 when i saw this movie for the first time and I am 23 now i remembered this line all my life I listen to this when I have a hard time with life and my family . (No im not married) just have a life that I have to be a man not a boy
Those are words that i carry with me as a father and husband.
I hate it when Uncle Bob dies. 😭
Hopefully uncle Bob had a JSA written up for climbing a tank in inclimate weather
Not as many safety regulations in those times as oppose to how it is today
If only someone used their stop work authority
OSHA would compensate his family ? Or the Company would payout his pension to his wife and children
Even though this takes place in 1980, it might as well be 2020 because chemical plant life in Houston hasn't changed much at all...
I hear you but perhaps the chemical plant office has computers in 2021 which in 1980 they did not have? Maybe the plant workers today use laptops ( the ones that have solid casing that construction workers use)?
Not true at all. The media and those who are not informed love to paint them as unsafe but it's just not true. Nobody is forced to in a lightning storm.
@@captinbeyond I wasn't referring to any safety aspect. I was referring to the workplace culture and camaraderie that exists amongst those of us who've been in the trenches of 12 hour shifts and 7 on/7 off schedules...
@@garycooper7345 Again, the workplace culture has changed dramatically . I used to work in the plants in the 70's until recently retiring and it's night and day difference. Not just more safer today, but the amenities are better....you have more attention provided by companies today that makes the jobsite a better place to work. There is more respect from top management down to workers, you have most cases better places for contractors to eat, better restrooms, places to wash up, better benefits,. I just disagree that a jobsite today is not much different than it was in 1980. Night and day difference.
Same for road construction….Been going on for as long as i can remember…
Bob was a wonderful family man.
Y'all gotta learn to swaller yer pride
God I love Uncle Bob’s twang.
Best sermon on pride you will ever hear!
Loved Uncle Bob😇
Sometimes when I know I have to swallow my pride .. I watch this clip before doing it. Lol thanks uncle bob
When I see Uncle Bob. I think of 'War Games'. "Take us to Defcon 4, get the President on the horn." Same accent.
I think of Barry Corbin in Raising Arizona every time I see him.
Uncle Bob...Lived and Learn ...Wise man💖💖💖💖💖
i blame the oil company for uncle bobs death sending him up there in a storm
whitebread8381 he went up there and boom how horrible
Uncle Bob is played by Barry Corbin.
Yes, thought he was great in War Games, Mississippi Burning too.
Barry Corbin is so awesome. I remember him in Raising Arizona.
Prison Warden in Stir Crazy.
I saw this at the drive in when it came out and I was seven!
This part always chokes me up
I had to do a double take when I realized the other guy was John Travolta.
Pride is the queen of sins. It is the root that all other sins stem from. That is why humility and meekness are absolutely necessary to have any shot at benevolence, benignity, and most of all true charity (Love of God for God's sake alone).
John Coontas yes that is true
If your god is love I wouldn't want to see hate
“ Pride comes before a fall “is in the Holy Bible

Well there's pride and then there's FALSE PRIDE.... sometimes we can't grasp God in our teeny opinionated stubborn mind.
I just lost my wife to cancer. Uncle Bob was 100% right.
Damn is he drinking in the process area. That’s a OSHA violation
Lmao
Maybe it’s coffee
It's not always about pride ,sometimes it's about right and wrong and truth and lies......and doing the right thing for the right reasons
I love how he says "swaller" instead of swallow.
Yeah, that's happened a few times hear - only louder! Rumbles the windows from miles away!
Uncle Bob had the balls to tell it like it is. Well, I mean, one of them was plastic, though.
UNCLE BOB IS THE BEST!
GOOD MOVIE!
Man, I wish I had an Uncle Bob
Me too
Same here
After getting killed at the oil refinery. Uncle Bob is reincarnated as General Beringer and nearly causes a nuclear war by ordering NORAD to Defcon 1, giving the WOPR total control of the missile launch
And years later he had to see Charlie Goodson for a session in Anger management

My grandpa worked at a plant in west lake Louisiana he made stuff that keep swimming pools clean
Chlorine causes CANCER
Uncle Bob!!!!!!!
Uncle Bob was so right he gave Bud some great advice and knew Bud loved Sissy and wanted to see them get back together it’s just a shamed he died in the movie.😢🥺
On Bud's first night in town, he meets two cowgirls at Gilley's, they have an anything-goes all-night blowout, & he comes staggering in the next morning, looking like death warmed over. Uncle Bob takes one look at him, & says, "Uh-oh, get out the Alka-Seltzer!". I've used that line for years, whenever someone's looking rough, & it always gets a chuckle.:)
the world could do with a lot less pride.
The speaker's voice sounds like actor Barry Corbin.
GODS XAMPLE.......
Love this movie
He really looks like Eric Stonestreet in his younger years, they made an awesome job casting Barry as Cam's dad on Modern Family
Good advice
It was as if Uncle Bob knew he was gonna die...... Even told his wife to give bud his belt buckle.
Old man. Has a lot of. Wisdom .
Usually getting struck by lightning after a life altering best scenario speach would have to suggest that the Cinderella story has to be remembered to some degree.dont worry uncle bob went to northern exposure heaven
Wish i had me an uncle bob before i screwed up a great deal of my life !
Girl look at him he got cute smile girl he was always handsome me back then
I love his smile. He was definitely a hottie back then.
This was heartbreaking

Very 😢 about uncle Bob
I needed close captions for this scene lmao
Love ya
1:35 for a minute there I thought those were the Hanson Brothers from Slapshot
This scene is a very good one and a very sad one. Deep down with the lightning going on that work should have been suspended for the night I would think.
He’s Cam’s father on Modern family 😁
I guess weather phases didn’t exist back then lmao
I thought the plant manager said they contracted out insulation work. Lol
that's not an oil ri, it's a plant.
10 people can't swaller their pride!
Omg this is coach whitey from one tree hill
John Travolta just simply could not act. Never could see the infatuation with him in any role.
Wait a minute I never seen this scene
Engineer Carville.
I don’t really know what Bob died from. He wasn’t struck by lightning directly and the fall didn’t kill him.
It looks like he was knocked back and down by the blast/force of the explosion and was knocked out then got burned by the flames coming from the other side. He most likely burned alive (although unconscious). You can see it better in the full scene.
Probably the fall off the support structure killed him?
Some people want to say that pride is bad, but without pride, you wouldn't do well in anything, not even in your appearance, because you wouldn't take pride in anything, not even in your appearance, so pride is actually good. People who bad-mouth pride are just jealous of those who do much better for themselves. Also, there's the concept of being proud of someone, like a parent being proud of their son or daughter. That would also be a good thing. If no one had pride, then no one would be proud of anyone, which would be unfortunate.
Uncle bob is right. A mans pride can make him do many foolish things.
uncle bob its in mimnnions
Pride's one of them 7 deadly's...

This scene is false. With Lightning and Thunder everyone would of come inside. You don't gauge a tank in that kind of weather.
These days you wouldn't. Back in the 70s/80s it was get your ass up there or you're fired.
Back then OSHA was a distant thing indeed.
I don’t think back in 1980 management was as careful and conscientious. This was before the internet and all the class action lawsuits that are now common which had made employments more careful.
