Val Kilmer was robbed of an Oscar nomination for his role of Doc Holliday. This is an underrated movie and needs more appreciation. I understood Doc Holliday to have been a man born into wealth, a bona-fide member of the landed Southern gentry with all the trappings of wealth (including a classical education, hence his knowledge of Latin). I think he was also originally a dentist by trade (hence the moniker "Doc").
I would have expected the real Doc Holliday to speak with the sort of upper-crust accent and affectations of a wealthy, well-bred Southerner, as portrayed by Kilmer.

He's so much better that he doesn't have to.

Most people don't notice because it happens so fast, but at 0:30 Curly Bill lays down a bet on the Faro table, Wyatt shakes his head slightly no, then moves Curly Bill's bet to another card. As soon as he does this Bill Paxton starts counting out money, and Wyatt flips the card to reveal Curly Bill won $500. Wyatt was trying to diffuse the building tension, and Curly Bill backing Ike down immediately afterward shows that it worked, albeit briefly.

Here's why this scene is brilliant. Ringo is trying to bait Doc to showing his draw. Doc holds his pistol on the front of his hip, which isn't common. In a duel, knowing how your opponent draws gives you an advantage. Like knowing how a baseball pitcher throws. Doc does the cup trick because it diffuses the situation WITHOUT showing Ringo his draw. Doc is probably better than Ringo anyway, but this gives Doc an advantage over Ringo for when they eventually duel. It's brilliant.

@@geedee1264 It just shows how dedicated to acting he is. He wanted it to look authentic on screen without using a double. Cool how he said that right from the first script reading he knew Johnny Ringo was the character he wanted. The entire movie couldn't have possibly been cast better. While Russell is a first rate Wyatt Earp, Kilmer stole the show with his portrayal of Doc Holliday.

I read in a biography that Doc knew 4 languages fluently and knew a great deal of French. During a lot of his gun battles he would recite lines from Shakespeare and the Bible. His mother died very quickly after contracting consumption. Doc went on to live many more years that he was expected to despite smoking and drinking 2 quarts of whisky per day and constantly being in dangerous situations. So many people in the Old West were just plain nuts. For instance, despite how he appears in Tombstone, Johnny Ringo was supposedly borderline psychotic. Many Old West legends were Civil War vets suffering from what we now know as PTSD. I think Doc used his IQ to make so many of these people think he was more nuts than they were.

    The Latin "battle":
Doc: In vino veritas. (In wine there is truth)
Along with being a gambler, Doc is a heavy drinker. Just prior, he said he hated Johnny because he reminded him of himself and later because Johnny is an educated man. Doc acknowledges that he is speaking more frankly than he otherwise might to a member of a criminal gang - yet that he means what he said.
Ringo: Age quod agis. (Do what you’re doing.)
Members of the Jesuit order use this Latin phrase to those undergoing Jesuit formation that they should focus intensely on their work. In English, we might say “Concentrate on the task at hand” or “Do what you’re best at.” Here Johnny makes a high-handed insult that the task at hand was Doc’s drinking.
Doc: Credat Judaeus Apella, non ego. (Let the Jew Apella believe it, not I.)
This is a quotation of Satires by the ancient poet Horace. In book one, satire five, people were trying to convince travelers that miracles were taking place at their shrines. Rather than a simple “I don’t believe you,” this phrase is utterly dismissive. In English, we might say it as “Go tell someone who will believe it.” Doc is likewise brushing off Johnny with an added threat of his own: “Drinking is not what I do best,” obliquely hinting at his reputation for being a quick draw.
Ringo: Iuventus stultorum magister. (Youth is the teacher of fools.)
Johnny is the younger of the two, but with this line and by tapping his pistols, he implies that Doc is the inexperienced one unaware of the danger he’s enticing and that Johnny will be the one teaching Doc a lesson. Johnny could have conveyed similar meaning with “Don’t bite off more than you can chew, boy.”
Doc: In pace requiescat. (Rest in peace.)
This phrase is a common fixture of grave markers with which Doc warns that Johnny should beware the danger at hand and foreshadows the showdown between Doc and Johnny later in the film - “It’s your funeral, bub.”
