    My VW Golf TDI R has had low coolant warnings show for several months until last weekend suddenly had a warning to stop as the engine was overheating and water temp up the red at 130. Took it into a local garage that said the radiator was leaking and replaced it for £180 plus £320 labour because apparently the radiator is at the back of the engine block and takes around 3hrs to remove. Does this make sense ?

    Did it stop your heating working / on one side only? What was the price for job? And did it work? Think I’ve same issue 😓

      No heater issues for me. It was £850 but they also replaced a loose part on the turbo along with the thermostat housing and the water pump. All fixed and no issues since. I have a video here with me explaining it all and I hope your issue with your R is sorted soon too: ua-cam.com/video/o13bgrTLvao/v-deo.html

    If you have an upgraded APR intercooler it could be the stock intake box rubbing against your coolant hose. That’s what happened to me. It created a hole and my coolant slowly leaked out

      This is all sorted now (please see video: ua-cam.com/video/o13bgrTLvao/v-deo.html). The car is completely stock but I appreciate your help none the less with the advice :-)

    Hi Sam I’ve just had my 2018 vw golf gti performance water pump replaced

      It is a shame it affects MK7.5's also. I wonder if VW will ever solve this issue with a revised component. I hope your GTI has many more years with no problems now 👍

    Saaaam. Just get some spill sand. The stuff they use in petrol stations to clear fuel spillages up.
    I believe the mk8 thermostat housing was redesigned.

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  2 роки тому

      Yes I am still not sure if it is solved on the MK8 but I guess time will tell if owners report any issues around this. I hope they have though as it is a fantastic car👍

    Sorry to hear your pain mate, as I said on last video; I've just had my waterpump + thermostat housing changed with similar/exact symtoms as you're seeing, a total pain in the ass :( As far as I could find online, the part itself is on it's 6th+ revision and fails 'randomly' in multple VW group vehicles not just the R... You may want to look at getting the belt replaced while you're on changing waterpump, potentially could save you a little down the line! Hope you get sorted quickly and keep us updated mate!

    My Golf R mk7 was losing coolant rapidly, the warning light came on suddenly in the centre of the instrument panel. I was a few miles from home but managed to get back carefully. The rubber pipe at the rear of the cylinder head was spitting out coolant. I did as you, putting a foil baking tray under the car after filling the tank with water. Overnight the tray was full. I didn't drive it again until driving to the dealer. I filled the tank and took water with me, just in case. Thankfully it's all sorted now.

    I believe early stages of the water pump going. I've had this before where garages can not find the issue, although this was a vauxhall and not vw.
    Just make sure it's never below half way because it will cause the headgasket to blow.
    Good luck Sam , hope you get it sorted

      Looking forward to it all being fixed and the car being back to full health again. Thank you also for your advice and I plan to keep it topped up as best as I can in the meantime 👍

    How very annoying and frustrating Sam. The leak appears to have got a whole deal worse since you reported previously, so best not to run it at all (or at least any distance). It is weird, all the way back in 2009 I bought a Scirocco 2.0TSI (from new) and only at 6K miles, I got a "low coolant' message on the dash. That turned out to be the water pump which thankfully was replaced under warranty. I am surprised that we are still seeing these water pump issues on the EA888 all these years on, as there must have been numerous claims on it, either on manufacturers or extended warranty. Good luck with the repair, please let us know how you get on!

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  2 роки тому +1

      Yes in the space of one evening it went from over full to almost seemingly empty which was a big surprise. I will keep you all posted as things progress and thank you for the support and advice 👍

    That should of been picked up at vw when you had it serviced. If they had checked the car over properly that is.

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  2 роки тому +1

      Very good point and I am not happy about this at all with them. I am still awaiting a response from them regarding the check over so will bring this up for sure if they ever get back to me.

      From what I've see car dealerships do over the years I've worked at them, I'd never get any car I own serviced by one ever.. They geared towards ripping the customers off more than anything else.

    Don’t start it up unless the coolant is at least minimum. It won’t hurt your drive. It does hurt humans if you drink it. Unscrupulous folk used to put in wine to make it taste sweeter.
