Guide to bleeding all the air out of a vw or audi cooling system, all the vw engines can be bled in this way when you replace coolant

Quick Note. Use de-mineralised water. Normal Tap water wil contain minerals which may cause rusting on the block which can lead to some blockages in the radiator and thermostat. Useful to check for high mileage ones. Also easy to tell if this is happening if you notice an orange scum like substance in the expansion tank.
Thank you for tip , changed my coolant crossover pipe today and seen " orange scum" ... So flushed and putted new ready to use coolant
dont use demineralised water actually because it sucks the minerals out of the block rain water is the best to use
@jameskealy8677 no you want the minerals out of the water because they leave traces of minerals all over the pipes leaving it gunked up rain water is the worst. Possible suggestion so many minerals. Boil water. Let it sit . Put it in your enginee ( filtered obs so there's no limescale from what ever boiled it

Bit late, but no need to turn the heat to max. Coolant always flows through the heater core. Temperature is regulated by the blend door inside the heater matrix 😉. Also there's usually a bleeder hole in the return line from the core. Shift the return line back till the hole is exposed, then raise the coolant reservoir higher(without the engine running). When coolant starts coming out of the small hole the system should be bled. I actually let coolant flow from the hole for a bit to make sure.

@@jahlamonte9653 well it goes through the firewall into the heater matrix. 2 lines next to each other(in and out). If I remember there is an arrow indicating the direction?
But the line coming out should go directly to the radiator up front. And the line going in should come from the engine. Since it carries all the heat from the engine to the heater core.
I don't own an Audi anymore so I can't check. But good luck!
The pipe you show at 2:33 flows much stronger than my Audi A3 return pipe. I'm having trouble with overheating and had the garage replace the water pump at great cost. They also flushed out all the pipes but I checked the return flow pipe today and it dribbles out. They are going to replace the thermostat this week but I'm not hopeful.
piggypiggy pig Check radiator for blockage and cold spots when running the car and blow into the return pipe to see if there is bubbles coming out of the reservoir then you have floww if there isnt then could be multiple things. ALSO Check to see if your engine fans are spinning if not could be a fuse or relay. Did they fix it though?
So mine dribbles out to so turn off and blew in to pipe like u said no bubbles but coolant was just rising then when stop blowing it drops down again ?

The events that led to this are as follows.
The water pump fails. So instead of taking the car to the garage I suspect a coolant leak and buy some RadWeld. I put RadWeld into the system to plug holes. This stops the leaks for a while but they later return. The water pump is again replaced by the garage.
Some years pass.... The engine starts to overheat. Repeated visits to the garage fail to find the fault. Continued use of the car results in the engine overheating, needle showing maximum when climbing steep hills, this warps the head and coolant starts to mix with the oil giving a milky texture. Repeated visits to the garage fail to find the cause and when I suggest the head gasket, it is not taken seriously. More money was spent to replace the water pump again and an ERG valve is fitted.
Overheating continues. I request that the garage does a high-pressure flush of the coolant system. This has no effect. The car continues to overheat. Another year passes and I see a video on UA-cam suggesting that my heater matrix might be blocked. I ask the garage to flush the matrix with high-pressure water. They were dismissive at first but I was insistent. The sheer amount of gunk that comes out of the heater matrix surprises garage owners. It was the RadWeld. This cures the overheating issue and I have heating from vents inside the car for the first time in years. Unfortunately, the oil pump fails probably due to all the water in the oil system and the engine makes tapping noises. And all because of RadWeld. NEVER NEVER buy that stuff.
Thanks for reply so mine keeps over heating when In traffic or a drive through so took it to a garage and they told me thermostat so I’ve got it done then on Way home from the garage it overheated again so then they said must be water pump so had water pump done and cambelt and it’s over heated again so changed coolant temp sensor and over heated again and like I said it over heats when moving really slow on a hill or in traffic if just at a stand still car does over heat it’s when moving so now seen could be radiator fan switch as they come on when out heating on but don’t seem to come on when car is over heating or starting to over head any ideas what else it could be mate and sorry you had that happen hoping this isn’t the case for me mate

It works but when the lid is off the reservoir if full,and when i close it the resevoir gets empty and i can't drive,when i open to refill - heat dissapears again
I did the same on a2004 Jetta 2.0 gasoline engine I’d use a non spill funnel and the coolant level raised a lot , expands too much almost spilled out of the funnel ,and still no heat from vents
Sounds like some major air trapped somewhere. Burp all the hoses you can while it's running. I have a 2012 but it's nearly identical.

Depends on the engine fitted as some cars that age have an electric controlled water pump so have a slightly more complex procedure

Gonna see if this is gonna save me a tow bill, I guess I burped the system wrong and still had some air in it, well it shot the coolant temp sensor out of the fitting.

Hi the reason the G12 pink coolant is so important it has a higher boiling point
Why,is it going to reach it inside your car's engine?
after 120 'C you will have a huge ''Booom'' no matter if the boiling point of G12 is almost 100% higher.
So you wait for the idle to go to 90 (level) with the cap off, and then you close the cap off and let it keep running until you get hot air?
I let the engine idle for maybe 5 - 10 mins with the cap off, and the temp gauge needle won't have moved yet normally (if that's what u mean by getting to 90) then I put the cap on. Only when the cap is on will the temp gauge start moving
i got the temp to 90 without putting the cap back on with the heater working on high temp, do i have another problem, because you said the temp gauge cant go up unless cap is on.....thanks
Have you got a diesel or petrol engine? I bled a diesel engine in the video and they take a lot longer to warm up than a petrol, hence I say put the cap on to keep pressure in the system which helps raise the temperature quicker... it's a long way of saying I would put the cap on and wait for the fans to kick in while watching the temperature doesn't get over 90, if it does and you have a good coolant pump ( see the extra check at the end of the video) then I wouldn't worry too much

@@gotblueslistentojazzvinyl2530 nah you're fine, as I'm sure you figured out. I have a 2012 Jetta 2.0 and it heats up fine in about 10min of idle the thermostat opens. No hot air on mine though, heater core is trashed after a dealer put the wrong coolant in. 😑

Nothing good in my experience. Usually a blown head or intake gasket. Best to do a leak down or compression test.
I had my first coolant warning, drove around 5 miles and topped up, since then on my way back home coolant is disappearing in 20 miles, no overheating, yet lol, is it gone or I did something wrong topping up water? Thanks bro
If you haven't opened up the cooling system you might have a leak somewhere if the coolant level is dropping... to bleed the system you just need to run the car with the cap off the reservoir and the heater in the car blowing hot, after keeping the level topped up for a minute or two put the cap on the reservoir and take it for a test drive

@@gibbogarage3481 found the leak. It's a metal pipe with a little hole in it spitting coolant, is that sealable or need replace? Lower back of engine that gonna cost me some cash😡😥
Yeh if it's rusted then patching it will only be a temporary solution. . Find a scrap yard or someone local breaking a car, might be the cheapest way to get one

I noticed my coolant was just below the minimum, then ordered some VW branded coolant (the pre-mixed 1 litre) .. Anyway after i topped it up (took about 0.7 litre) and had a ~10 mile drive then all my coolant leaked out. but can't find any source for the leakage. Could that because of a pressure build-up? As i did not bleed it.

@@MeAmJosh It was a blocked valve in the pump, and when I added the coolant, a pressure build-up when the engine warmed up .. And because the pump is plastic and over 10 years old, it did crack and leak out the coolant. I ended up replacing the pump with a new metal housing and pipes.
@@eeemuse I was not expecting a response, ty, I'm bleeding my aunts bug rn because it doesn't wanna stay below operating at an idle, I'm thinking a big air pocket in the radiators themselves, because now it's fine.
@@MeAmJosh did the coolant smell like fuel and oil before replacing it or topping-up? Or does it have any oil residuals in it? if yes then it is the head gasket worn out.
@@MeAmJosh Also check the area where the coolant pump is attached to the engine. If there is any coolant crystallisation there, it could mean either a cracked housing, worn-out gasket, or leaking temp sensor.

How long do you keep the pipe off with the pipe you pulled off for? Just until you don't see any bubbles?
I just let mine go a bit after the thermostat opens up. You'll know because some antifreeze will boil over with the cap off. Still no guarantee but it works alright on my 2.0 Jetta.

You would need to buy a flush kit
Socio Vibez The flush kits are alot of different chemicals to soften, grab and isolate the debris so when you drain all the fluid its all clear then you put a hose through it

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this works on newer models, like the MK7 Golf? Having a mare bleeding my system and getting the heating working evenly again after flushing it and cleaning my matrix out.
Not all red coolant is compatible with VW/Audi.
Should you use distilled water or tap water?
I've only ever used tap water and vw spec'd antifreeze.... although I've heard of classic car owners using distilled water to prevent rust in the cooling system

Distilled to prevent your system resembling the inside of a kettle. I've always used to water but I also premix before topping up.
I have a 2015 2.0 tdi a3 and ive tried this and still not getting any heat from the heaters, any ideas? Car runs fine and doesnt overheat also.

I had same probs turned out to be busted pipe near rear coolant flange.. right bastard to get at.. it busted right at the clip though so cut it off at break put back on been sweet since
Research Audi A3 matrix problem it is a major problem in new shape A3 and golf mk7
Tip for when doing cooling system service. when you got a bottle of new antifreeze that is full strength (undiluted) take a black marker and write on side of bottle 100% so that 3 years from now and you grab the bottle you know the contents is full strength. Mix the coolant 50/50 or whatever ratio in another container be it the same type of bottle or different and mark it plainly 50/50 and then add G12 or Dexcool or whatever brand of coolant FORD etc.. so you KNOW exactly what is in the bottle. Some of you may think this isn't important ? and those would be the people that grab 50/50 coolant bottle and add 50% water to it and then come winter time wonder why the side of the engine block has a crack the entire length ? that is because you dumb ass put the wrong mix into the cooling system and it FROZE in the winter now you need a new engine block. THAT is why you mark the shit clearly. or one step further own an antifreeze tester and test the vehicle when done to make damn sure it is correct. no guess work involved. If you live in Florida ? they carry on no need to worry about frozen engine block unless the earth tilts on its axle ? in which case the tidal wave about to drown you is of more immediate concern.
It must be deminiralised water. You can't just add plain water. 😅
So many errors are shown here... You should never mix the coolant in the car cooling system itself. It should be mixed before pouring into the expansion tank. While bleeding the air AC should be off, heating temp to the max but blower to min. I'm not sure if leaving the coolant cap off is a good idea as it is a pressurised system and to work properly it has to have certain pressure in.
I know you are meant to mix outside, but I strongly doubt it really matters. It will mix quickly so nothing is exposed for very long to the concentrate. It will also mix before the coolant gets hot. Unless there is another factor I am not aware of.
